Painting the way to
MEL HELLIER is on a mission
to beautify Christchurch.
She’s the new graffiti projects
co-ordinator at the city council
and already she’s making a difference
with the ‘What’s Cool
About Your School’ initiative.
Schools can adopt a Chorus
or Vodafone cabinet and showcase
their school by designing,
painting and maintaining the
cabinet.
“It helps to beautify their
surroundings and increase
ownership in their community,”
Hillier said.
A successful pilot was recently
held at Te Kōmanawa Rowley
School with Year 8 student Bella
chosen to create a design. A cabinet
on Rowley Ave was painted
by Bella whose story behind her
design “is about the hidden talent
we all have, and the flowers
representing all the different
cultures in my community”.
Hillier is hoping to roll the
programme out to other schools
during the rest of the year.
“I’ve searched up every
cabinet box in every suburb,
identified which ones have been
painted already and then prioritised
the ones that are most
often tagged. Then I’ve looked
at which schools are closest. My
aim, along with my colleague
Donna, is to connect with
around 20 schools this year,
so we can collectively beautify
a beautiful city
them,” she said.
With a background as a primary
school teacher, Hillier has
created a special pack for school
pupils that will help to scaffold
and inspire students’ designs.
The graffiti team will then
provide all the paint and
materials artists will need.
Each school that participates
will qualify for a gift of paint
resources for their art department.
“I see this role as being an
agent for life and community
change through building connections,
relationships, opportunity,
and education in our
communities. We’re working
at a preventative level to reduce
tagging and see all those with
artistic ability contributing to
the community in a ‘beautiful
way’.” • Turn to page 4
DO YOU KNOW someone who
gives up their time to help others,
or goes above and beyond the call
Each year Christchurch benefits
from the service of volunteers,
and their valuable contributions
are recognised in the annual city
council Civic Awards.
Submissions are open to nominate
local heroes. City council
civic and international relations
manager Duncan Sandeman said
the awards are a great opportunity
to acknowledge people in the
community.
“We want to share the stories of
Christchurch residents who have
generously donated their time and
energy to benefit others,” he said.
“This is the ideal chance to put
forward those individuals and
groups who have made such a big
difference to so many others, as
well as to the environment and
community well-being.”
Recipients from the previous
ceremony include the youngest
ever award winner, 15-year-old
climate activist Lucy Alice Gray.
“It’s time to thank those selfless
acts through this recognition,”
said Sandeman.
Vibrant arts festival lights up town
• By Heidi Slade
THE LYTTELTON Arts Festival
is in full swing, with many acts
yet to come before the grand
finale on Sunday night.
“Epic”, “amazing” and “stunning”
are some of the superlatives
being thrown around about
the festival, which is in its second
year.
Organiser Skye Broger said
ticket sales were over the thousand
mark and she was looking
forward to the remaining acts.
The festival began on Friday
with a dance party/parade, followed
by acts like Mantra over
the weekend, which was a mix
of puppets and contemporary
dance.
Talent show, Stars in Their
Eyes, where contestants embody
iconic musicians, was “a concert
for all the old favourites”. Acts
performed as Olivia Newton-
John, Blondie, and Billie Joe
Armstrong from Green Day.
But the eclectic selection of entertainment
is not over until its
final act, Going Bush, on Sunday
night.
The Kate Bush tribute will see
singer Charlotte Crone and her
band take on Bush’s well-known
songs, like Wuthering Heights, in
a mixed-media production.
Broberg said she is also excited
to see Von Leon’s Candyland
performance, typically a part
cabaret, part storytelling play for
adults.
Brogerg said Leon will also
take on a kids’ performance,
telling a story of the Matariki
stars being stolen.
“There’s a legacy in Lyttelton of
these Candyland shows that Von
Leon has been putting on for a
decade now,” she said.
“It’s almost like a play, but it’s
also a variety show, but he also
does live music.”
GREAT WINTER READS AT PAPERPLUS FERRYMEAD
Wavewalker: Breaking Free
by Suzanne Heywood
Aged just seven, Suzanne Heywood set sail with her parents and brother on
a three-year voyage around the world. What followed turned instead into a
decade-long way of life, through storms, shipwrecks, reefs and isolation, with
little formal schooling. No one else knew where they were most of the time and
no state showed any interest in what was happening to the children. Suzanne
fought her parents, longing to return to England and to education and stability.
Wavewalker is the incredible true story of how the adventure of a lifetime
became one child’s worst nightmare – and how her determination to educate
herself enabled her to escape.
Head On
by Carl Hayman, with Dylan Cleaver
All Black’s memoir of rugby, dementia, and the hidden cost of success.
Carl Hayman, All Black #1000, once the most highly prized player in world rugby
and a giant of the game in every sense - someone who was always respected,
even feared. But at the end of seventeen years as a professional rugby player,
the last eight played with the sole aim of setting up his family’s future, Hayman’s
life began to unravel in nightmarish fashion. Head On is about the pressures on
the modern athlete, where physical performance and commerce collide, and
players become victims of their own success. This book is also about how all
of us can better understand how the decisions we make can have unintended
consequences, and how we can better serve our young sporting talent.
New graffiti
co-ordinator
full of ideas
• From page 1
Hillier has been out with
artists painting murals and was
surprised at the number of people
who made a point of stopping
to express their gratitude and
compliments.
Additionally, she is part of the
reactivation of the offending
programme with Restorative
Justice Services to work alongside
people who’ve been apprehended
for tagging.
“We offer them the opportunity
to harness their skill and channel
it in a positive way. This has
already proven to be fruitful with
offenders now painting murals
in their community rather than
graffiti.”
Liaising with businesses to preserve
and restore murals that have
been tagged is another facet of her
role and she’s currently facilitating
the preservation of the elephant
mural on Manchester St.
“I also work with not-for-profit
organisations and businesses
that have been repeatedly tagged,
providing them with resources to
remove the tags and also connecting
them with artists to facilitate
putting up murals on their walls,”
she said.
Pop-up walls for local and
international artists to ‘free paint’
is another idea she’s dreaming
about, to provide a legal space for
artist to express themselves.
Celebrating a champion
of community causes
Long time and well
known Cashmere
resident Gwen Capill
passed away peacefully
this month, aged 103,
at Cashmere View Care
Home. Before that she
had lived for many
years in Landsdowne
Tce. Her daughter
Lorraine Gray looks
back on her life
GWEN WAS born in the
Phillipstown area and grew up
as one of six siblings in a family
heavily involved in community
activities.
She attended Phillipstown
School and then Christchurch
Technical College. She was
devoted to the Phillipstown
Swimming Club and was for
many years chair of the Phillipstown
school committee.
Her championing of local community
causes helped lead to
the formation of the Charleston
Community Group.
In her 60s she moved to
Cashmere, where she was
an enthusiastic member of a
number of local groups: South
Christchurch Tecorians (an
and speaking), the Cashmere
Bowling Club and Probus, for
example. She was an avid netball
and rugby fan, as well as a keen
gardener.
In 2010, she was awarded
a Spreydon/Heathcote Community
Service Award for her
extremely long span and range
of commitment to Christchurch
communities.
Gwen was somewhat bemused
by her longevity – she thought
it might have something to do
with her many years of cycling
(she never learned to drive a car)
and her love of carrots (she did
have excellent eyesight!).
She had a wonderful sense of
humour and mischief. She had
very many friends, not only in
the Cashmere View Retirement
Village but also throughout the
city.
Her family extend a warm
invitation to Gwen’s neighbours
and friends to attend a
celebration of her life, which
will take place on Saturday,
September 2 at 1pm in the John
New pyjamas for kids in need
• By Heidi Slade
CHOLMONDELEY
Children’s Centre has received
a donation of more than 200
pairs of brand-new winter
pyjamas and multiple pairs of
slippers, for a second year in
a row.
The Governors Bay charity
has been operating for 98
years and provides temporary
emergency and respite care for
children in need.
Donated by
the Kindness
Collective
Foundation,
the pyjamas
and slippers
“take a
Lisa Hurry
massive
weight off
our overhead
costs,” Cholmondeley practice
manager Lisa Hurry said.
“We are an organisation
that’s 80 per cent funded by
the community.”
Hurry said the donation
was part of a Kindness
Collective initiative, which
runs annually.
The collective is a
nationwide charity that
provides children and their
families with the items they
need, like pyjamas and
slippers.
“Every year they have a
pyjama drive,” Hurry
said.
DONATION: Thanks to the Kindness Collective Foundation, 200 pairs of brand-new
winter pyjamas have been donated to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.
Community groups donate
the pyjamas to the collective,
which then distributes
them.
Over the past three years,
the collective has distributed
more than 25,000 pairs of
warm winter pyjamas to
children in need.
Hurry said a portion of the
pyjamas and slippers would
stay at Cholmondeley for
children when they come for
temporary stays.
The remainder would go
back with children to their
families, for them to keep.
“When children come
and stay with us, we provide
everything they need to stay,”
Hurry said.
“A lot of these children
might not have pyjamas.”
Hurry said Cholmondeley
currently supports about 350
children and their families,
and over 30,000 children
have come through the
centre during its 98 years of
operation.
“A lot of people have a
story or a connection to
Cholmondeley,” she said.
“And we can’t do it without
the community.”
The centre thrives off
initiatives like its annual
Giving Day, when donors
match all donations made to
the centre.
This year, the Giving Day
raised more than $50,000
with its donors Christchurch
the last few years, says Smit, not
only for its significantly lower
prices and customer service, but
also because of a new purchasing
option being added.
“During the Covid pandemic
our online service was born out
of necessity to both keep our
staff in a job and to feed our loyal
customers during the lockdown.
Today, we are the only frozen
meat online service in New
Zealand providing everyday
meat and food items to people in
most areas of the country. People
lead busy lives these days, so we
are pleased to provide this great
service.
“For our Christchurch
customers we will be offering an
online pick-up in due course, but
in the meantime they can take
advantage of our online delivery
out of Invercargill by choosing
from the selection on the website,
which is sourced from our
modern export factory.”
Staff at Sydenham’s Prime
Range Fresh are all local people,
and the store will be supporting
and sponsoring local community
events.
“We are thrilled to now have
a store in Christchurch offering
our quality, value and service,
and our team looks forward to
meeting and serving all our new
customers,” Smit says.
New complex marks centenary
for funeral directors
The 100th anniversary of funeral
directors Lamb & Hayward is not
only being proudly celebrated by this
Canterbury owned and operated funeral
company but has also been marked with
the opening in April of the company’s
new Halswell facility.
Located on the corner of Halswell
Junction and Wigram roads, Oaklands
offers a 200-seat chapel, with extra
space for another 100-plus people, and
the Centennial Lounge where family
and friends can gather for refreshments
after the funeral service.
Views of the Port Hills from the
chapel and of the Southern Alps from
the Centennial Lounge bring a special
Christchurch character to Oaklands,
while creating a peaceful environment
for those attending services there.
Lead funeral director Liz Mills says
she and her fellow funeral directors,
Julie Harrington and Cara Hall, are
thrilled that Lamb & Hayward is now
offering services for families in the
south-west of Christchurch.
“We are all local, so we are familiar
with the community, and we are very
happy to be here for the local people,”
Liz says.
“Residents from around the area
have been watching our complex being
built, so it’s very pleasing for everyone
to see it completed. It’s one of the first
purpose-built funeral homes to be built
in the city for a long time.”
The Oaklands team, from left, Julie
Harrington, Cara Hall, and Liz Mills.
Lamb and Hayward’s new
purpose-built Halswell facility.
The two-hectare site not only provides
parking for 175 vehicles, it also features
beautiful landscaping and planting.
“Lamb & Hayward is well-known for
the beauty of its grounds, and Oaklands
is following in the tradition, with daily
landscaping,” Liz says, adding, “The new
plantings are already attracting bird life,
too.”
Providing a peaceful, calming
environment, the grounds also include
the Waka Trail, which is a continuation
of the Longhurst Trail.
“Since we opened, Oaklands has
already hosted several funerals,
and the feedback has been lovely,
with people commenting on the
community feel, and describing it as a
green oasis,” Liz says.
She and her team invite people to call
in to have a look around and ask any
questions they may have about funeral
services.
“We want people to feel it’s their
place, a familiar space, so when they
need to call on our services for family or
friends, they will feel comfortable here.
That’s very important to us.”
Oaklands is located at 500 Wigram
Road, phone (03) 244 0234, email
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping Cantabrians
get the balance right when it comes to
choosing the perfect heat pump or air
conditioning system for their home or office
since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home both
in Winter and Summer. This can be achieved
by using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in designing,
installing and commissioning these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community Services
Card, a SuperGold combo card or who live in
a low-income area as determined by deciles
8-10 on the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s
time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
