Painting the way to 

MEL HELLIER is on a mission 

to beautify Christchurch. 

She’s the new graffiti projects 

co-ordinator at the city council 

and already she’s making a difference 

with the ‘What’s Cool 

About Your School’ initiative. 

Schools can adopt a Chorus 

or Vodafone cabinet and showcase 

their school by designing, 

painting and maintaining the 

cabinet. 

“It helps to beautify their 

surroundings and increase 

ownership in their community,” 

Hillier said. 

A successful pilot was recently 

held at Te Kōmanawa Rowley 

School with Year 8 student Bella 

chosen to create a design. A cabinet 

on Rowley Ave was painted 

by Bella whose story behind her 

design “is about the hidden talent 

we all have, and the flowers 

representing all the different 

cultures in my community”. 

Hillier is hoping to roll the 

programme out to other schools 

during the rest of the year. 

“I’ve searched up every 

cabinet box in every suburb, 

identified which ones have been 

painted already and then prioritised 

the ones that are most 

often tagged. Then I’ve looked 

at which schools are closest. My 

aim, along with my colleague 

Donna, is to connect with 

around 20 schools this year, 

so we can collectively beautify 

a beautiful city

With a background as a primary 

school teacher, Hillier has 

created a special pack for school 

pupils that will help to scaffold 

and inspire students’ designs. 

The graffiti team will then 

provide all the paint and 

materials artists will need. 

Each school that participates 

will qualify for a gift of paint 

resources for their art department. 

“I see this role as being an 

agent for life and community 

change through building connections, 

relationships, opportunity, 

and education in our 

communities. We’re working 

at a preventative level to reduce 

tagging and see all those with 

artistic ability contributing to 

the community in a ‘beautiful

climate activist Lucy Alice Gray.

Vibrant arts festival lights up town

THE LYTTELTON Arts Festival 

is in full swing, with many acts 

yet to come before the grand 

finale on Sunday night. 

“Epic”, “amazing” and “stunning” 

are some of the superlatives 

being thrown around about 

the festival, which is in its second 

year. 

Organiser Skye Broger said 

ticket sales were over the thousand 

mark and she was looking 

forward to the remaining acts. 

The festival began on Friday 

with a dance party/parade, followed 

by acts like Mantra over 

the weekend, which was a mix 

of puppets and contemporary 

dance. 

Talent show, Stars in Their 

Eyes, where contestants embody 

iconic musicians, was “a concert 

for all the old favourites”. Acts 

performed as Olivia Newton- 

John, Blondie, and Billie Joe 

Armstrong from Green Day. 

But the eclectic selection of entertainment 

is not over until its 

final act, Going Bush, on Sunday 

night. 

The Kate Bush tribute will see 

singer Charlotte Crone and her 

band take on Bush’s well-known 

songs, like Wuthering Heights, in 

a mixed-media production. 

Broberg said she is also excited 

to see Von Leon’s Candyland 

performance, typically a part 

cabaret, part storytelling play for 

adults. 

Brogerg said Leon will also 

take on a kids’ performance, 

telling a story of the Matariki 

stars being stolen. 

“There’s a legacy in Lyttelton of 

these Candyland shows that Von 

Leon has been putting on for a 

decade now,” she said. 

“It’s almost like a play, but it’s 

also a variety show, but he also 

does live music.”

artists painting murals and was 

surprised at the number of people 

who made a point of stopping 

to express their gratitude and 

compliments. 

Additionally, she is part of the 

reactivation of the offending 

programme with Restorative 

Justice Services to work alongside 

people who’ve been apprehended 

for tagging. 

“We offer them the opportunity 

to harness their skill and channel 

it in a positive way. This has 

already proven to be fruitful with 

offenders now painting murals 

in their community rather than 

graffiti.” 

Liaising with businesses to preserve 

and restore murals that have 

been tagged is another facet of her 

role and she’s currently facilitating 

the preservation of the elephant 

mural on Manchester St. 

“I also work with not-for-profit 

organisations and businesses 

that have been repeatedly tagged, 

providing them with resources to 

remove the tags and also connecting 

them with artists to facilitate 

putting up murals on their walls,” 

she said. 

Pop-up walls for local and 

international artists to ‘free paint’ 

is another idea she’s dreaming 

about, to provide a legal space for 

artist to express themselves. 

Celebrating a champion 

of community causes

resident Gwen Capill 

passed away peacefully 

this month, aged 103, 

at Cashmere View Care 

Home. Before that she 

had lived for many 

years in Landsdowne 

Tce. Her daughter 

Lorraine Gray looks 

back on her life 

GWEN WAS born in the 

Phillipstown area and grew up 

as one of six siblings in a family 

heavily involved in community 

activities. 

She attended Phillipstown 

School and then Christchurch 

Technical College. She was 

devoted to the Phillipstown 

Swimming Club and was for 

many years chair of the Phillipstown 

school committee. 

Her championing of local community 

causes helped lead to 

the formation of the Charleston 

Community Group. 

In her 60s she moved to 

Cashmere, where she was 

an enthusiastic member of a 

number of local groups: South 

Christchurch Tecorians (an

organisation promoting writing 

and speaking), the Cashmere 

Bowling Club and Probus, for 

example. She was an avid netball 

and rugby fan, as well as a keen 

gardener. 

In 2010, she was awarded 

a Spreydon/Heathcote Community 

Service Award for her 

extremely long span and range 

of commitment to Christchurch 

communities. 

Gwen was somewhat bemused 

by her longevity – she thought 

it might have something to do 

with her many years of cycling 

(she never learned to drive a car) 

and her love of carrots (she did 

have excellent eyesight!). 

She had a wonderful sense of 

humour and mischief. She had 

very many friends, not only in 

the Cashmere View Retirement 

Village but also throughout the 

city. 

Her family extend a warm 

invitation to Gwen’s neighbours 

and friends to attend a 

celebration of her life, which 

will take place on Saturday, 

September 2 at 1pm in the John 

Rhind Chapel, London St.

New pyjamas for kids in need

Children’s Centre has received 

a donation of more than 200 

pairs of brand-new winter 

pyjamas and multiple pairs of 

slippers, for a second year in 

a row. 

The Governors Bay charity 

has been operating for 98 

years and provides temporary 

emergency and respite care for 

children in need.

manager Lisa Hurry said. 

“We are an organisation 

that’s 80 per cent funded by 

the community.” 

Hurry said the donation 

was part of a Kindness 

Collective initiative, which 

runs annually. 

The collective is a 

nationwide charity that 

provides children and their 

families with the items they 

need, like pyjamas and 

slippers. 

“Every year they have a 

pyjama drive,” Hurry 

said. 

DONATION: Thanks to the Kindness Collective Foundation, 200 pairs of brand-new 

winter pyjamas have been donated to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre. 

Community groups donate 

the pyjamas to the collective, 

which then distributes 

them. 

Over the past three years, 

the collective has distributed 

more than 25,000 pairs of 

warm winter pyjamas to 

children in need. 

Hurry said a portion of the 

pyjamas and slippers would 

stay at Cholmondeley for 

children when they come for 

temporary stays. 

The remainder would go 

back with children to their 

families, for them to keep. 

“When children come 

and stay with us, we provide 

everything they need to stay,” 

Hurry said. 

“A lot of these children 

might not have pyjamas.” 

Hurry said Cholmondeley 

currently supports about 350 

children and their families, 

and over 30,000 children 

have come through the 

centre during its 98 years of 

operation. 

“A lot of people have a 

story or a connection to 

Cholmondeley,” she said. 

“And we can’t do it without 

the community.” 

The centre thrives off 

initiatives like its annual 

Giving Day, when donors 

match all donations made to 

the centre. 

This year, the Giving Day 

raised more than $50,000 

with its donors Christchurch 

Casino, United Fisheries and 

Oakridge Homes.

New complex marks centenary 

for funeral directors 

The 100th anniversary of funeral 

directors Lamb & Hayward is not 

only being proudly celebrated by this 

Canterbury owned and operated funeral 

company but has also been marked with 

the opening in April of the company’s

Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s

lead to mould growth and dampness in your 

property, leading to costlier maintenance 

and an unhealthy living environment. 

Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat 

output and lower running costs, like a heat 

pump, will enable your tenants to heat the

Courses this term all taught by John

photographer/educator. On a Monday 

night we have a Beginners Photography 

Course designed for DSLR, Mirrorless and 

Compact Cameras. This course will give 

you an insight into how the camera works 

and will cover basic camera controls and 

handling. For those students who are 

wanting to further their skills we have a 

Beyond Beginners Course on a Tuesday 

night starting rom 25 July. This course is 

suitable for experienced amateurs wanting 

to expand their knowledge. We are also 

offering a Night Photography Course 

which will cover equipment, techniques, 

how to focus at night, using flash at night 

and much more.

Art Show 

The CWEA is excited to invite you 

to this week-long ART SHOW. The art 

on display at 59 Gloucester Street will

From a garage art collective whose 

practice has been honed by WEA study 

with Linda Hart and Nina Cook, Jeanne, 

Mike and Kaye were the catalyst for this 

collaborative Art Show at WEA. For 

some participants this show marks the 

courageous step to show their work 

beyond family and friends for the first 

time. For others it is another opportunity 

to show work alongside fellow students 

and their tutors. Most of the work will 

be for sale and those who seek to acquire 

an original work of art should definitely 

schedule a visit in the early stages of the 

show (with collection to be arranged after

nutrition changes. Participants will 

learn about a variety of topics, including 

macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, 

and fat), micronutrients (vitamins and 

minerals), hydration, metabolism, national 

nutrition guidelines, meal planning, 

supplements, deciphering nutrition 

labels, debunking nutrition myths and 

misinformation, body image, media 

influence, intuitive eating, health at every 

size, nutrition psychology, and goal setting. 

You’ll also explore the relationship 

between nutrition and multiple facets of 

health, including physical, psychological, 

social, cultural, and environmental aspects. 

Additionally, special nutrition 

circumstances such as allergies, plant-based 

diets, and basic exercise nutrition will be 

covered. 

With her diverse background, Rebecca 

has plenty of experience as a Peer tutor for 

the Ara Human Nutrition students, teacher 

aide, is currently on the Circotica Circus 

School committee as their Health and 

Safety committee member and has worked 

in outdoor education. 

Rebecca is equipped with a Bachelor of 

Applied Science in Human Nutrition from 

Ara Institute of Canterbury and possesses 

an in-depth understanding of how nutrition 

profoundly impacts overall wellbeing.
