The Governors Bay charity has been operating for 98 years and provides temporary emergency and respite care for children in need. Donated by the Kindness Collective Foundation, the pyjamas and slippers “take a Lisa Hurry massive weight off our overhead costs,” Cholmondeley practice manager Lisa Hurry said. “We are an organisation that’s 80 per cent funded by the community.” Hurry said the donation was part of a Kindness Collective initiative, which runs annually. The collective is a nationwide charity that provides children and their families with the items they need, like pyjamas and slippers. “Every year they have a pyjama drive,” Hurry said. DONATION: Thanks to the Kindness Collective Foundation, 200 pairs of brand-new winter pyjamas have been donated to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre. Community groups donate the pyjamas to the collective, which then distributes them. Over the past three years, the collective has distributed more than 25,000 pairs of warm winter pyjamas to children in need. Hurry said a portion of the pyjamas and slippers would stay at Cholmondeley for children when they come for temporary stays. The remainder would go back with children to their families, for them to keep. “When children come and stay with us, we provide everything they need to stay,” Hurry said. “A lot of these children might not have pyjamas.” Hurry said Cholmondeley currently supports about 350 children and their families, and over 30,000 children have come through the centre during its 98 years of operation. Thursday July 6 2023 “A lot of people have a story or a connection to Cholmondeley,” she said. “And we can’t do it without the community.” The centre thrives off initiatives like its annual Giving Day, when donors match all donations made to the centre. Thursday July 6 2023 5 Changes proposed for roads to stop anti-social driving •From page 1 Greater Hornby Residents Association chair Kim Moss said it had passed on residents’ concerns to the city council. “Any respite for residents from anti-social road users late at night or early hours in the morning will be appreciated, especially for families with young children and the elderly,” she said. Riccarton city Kim Moss councillor Tyla Harrison-Hunt said the plan is important to help keep the community safe. “This has been a huge interest to the public with the amount of boy racers and anti-social road users,” Harrison-Hunt said. “This will help support the police enforce the bylaw which will really help the community.” City council transport operations manager Stephen Wright said the roads tend to be in secluded areas, where there is a history of people gathering to watch or take part in unsafe driving, such Stephen Wright as burnouts and street racing. “There is a history of complaints, damage to the road and a history of road-related antisocial activities happening on these roads,” Wright said. “If these roads are added to the register, it will give the police access to tools to address and reduce dangerous and antisocial behaviour. “This includes being able to issue infringement notices (tickets) and warning notices, which can result in the seizure and impoundment of vehicles for repeated breaches,” he said. The city council is also reviewing its cruising and prohibited times on roads bylaw, which has not been reviewed since 2014. Wright said whenever a bylaw is reviewed, staff update and modernise it to ensure it is ROADS: A section of Pound Rd has been earmarked for possible restrictions. We have also reviewed the roads that the bylaw regulates and are recommending some changes as a result. “The bylaw aims to reduce dangerous and anti-social vehicle-related behaviour on our roads, and enables the police to take certain enforcement actions, complementing other powers they have.” Submissions can be made via the city council website. Lead funeral director Liz Mills says she and her fellow funeral directors, Julie Harrington and Cara Hall, are thrilled that Lamb & Hayward is now offering services for families in the south-west of Christchurch. “We are all local, so we are familiar with the community, and we are very happy to be here for the local people,” Liz says. “Residents from around the area have been watching our complex being built, so it’s very pleasing for everyone to see it completed. The two-hectare site not only provides parking for 175 vehicles, it also features beautiful landscaping and planting. “Lamb & Hayward is well-known for the beauty of its grounds, and Oaklands is following in the tradition, with daily landscaping,” Liz says, adding, “The new plantings are already attracting bird life, too.” Providing a peaceful, calming environment, the grounds also include the Waka Trail, which is a continuation of the Longhurst Trail. “Since we opened, Oaklands has already hosted several funerals, and the feedback has been lovely, with people commenting on the community feel, and describing it as a green oasis,” Liz says. She and her team invite people to call in to have a look around and ask any questions they may have about funeral services. “We want people to feel it’s their place, a familiar space, so when they need to call on our services for family or friends, they will feel comfortable here.
