THE LYTTELTON Arts
after 10 days jam-packed with
local talent.
you, Lyttelton
More than 2500 people
attended the festival, which was
a great success, organiser Skye
Broberg said.
“It was really wonderful,
overall, with the response we
had,” she said.
The second week featured
acts like Lizzie Tollemache’s
Bedtime Stories for Grown-
Ups, which Broberg said was
magical – and the Lyttelton
Arts Factory may look to host
once a month.
“It was so wonderful,
everyone was just floating out
Squash club,
arbitration
date set
• By Heidi Slade
THE MT Pleasant Squash Club
has budgeted $15,000 for legal fees
to try and stop it being taken over
by the Mt Pleasant Community
Centre.
The club is in a legal dispute
with the centre after being issued
a notice to terminate its licence
to occupy the McCormacks Bay
facility, which it has been in for
more than 40 years.
Tit-for-tat letters between
lawyers acting for the club and the
centre have led to the notice being
put on hold until arbitration is
held between the two.
Bay Harbour News can now
reveal arbitration will take place
in November.
Squash club members were told
at its annual meeting last Tuesday
the $15,000 budget would be taken
from the club’s cash reserves.
Two members raised concerns
using the money would be a
breach of the club’s constitution.
But club president Hamish
Methven said that was incorrect.
“It’s not in the constitution.
We can use club funds for legal
action,” he said.
Community Board’s new
Leslie is a board member
for the Wairewa Subdivision.
The new election comes
week. Davidson will exit
the board completely before
October’s general election,
Davidson.
“I look forward to working
Quake-damaged lodge restored
THE RESTORATION of a
Lyttelton heritage building is
now complete after more than
five years in the making.
The Kilwinning Masonic
Lodge on Canterbury St was
built in 1881.
It was originally a single-story
structure, named in
honour of what is believed to
be the oldest masonic lodge in
Scotland.
In 2000, well-known Lyttelton
artist Bill Hammond purchased
the building, where he
lived and worked for 10 years.
It was significantly damaged
in the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, and was deemed
uninhabitable.
In 2015, the building was
bought by Kotahi Engineering
Sidewalk and Kohl, excellent value for
this quality.
received $258,782 in city council
heritage incentive grants
split over two financial years.
During the stabilisation
process, the building’s original
brick foundation was carefully
removed and replaced,
revealing the original 1881
foundation stone.
The conservation work
included recreating the
building’s original painted
exterior and colour scheme
to emulate the aesthetics of
traditional Oamaru stone.
Once the final approval
stages with the city council are
complete, Kotahi Engineering
Community centre acting
respond to Bay Harbour News’
questions, asking how much the
community centre has allocated
for its legal funds and if the
centre has funds available.
She said she could not respond
to questions due to the upcoming
arbitration.
“We don’t have any further
comments to make on the matter,”
Wolff said.
“There’s not a lot more to say.”
The squash club also passed
several amendments to its
in the 1980s, at the annual
meeting.
“We’re trying to do our piece
to make it more modern,” Methven
said.
“We approved our changes at
the AGM. I now have to present
those changes to the community
The amendments include
decreasing the number of
modern financial year, Methven
said.
The community centre will
What’s our future,
Canterbury?
ENVIRONMENT Canterbury is
responsible for supporting the wellbeing
of our region by delivering
environmental management, public
transport services, and helping build
community resilience.
We want to hear from our
communities about the visions and
outcomes we should work on for our
lived-in and natural environment.
We’re asking for your feedback and
thoughts on:
Air
Clean air is vital for supporting human
health and healthy ecosystems. What
more should we do to keep odour, dust
and pollutants from our air?
Land
Our landscape supports the rural
economy and unique biodiversity, and
has immense historical and cultural
significance. Have we got our priorities
right?
Water
Unhealthy waterways are unacceptable
for our community. How much more
should we do to protect water quality for
future generations?
Coast
Our coastal environment is of special
significance to mana whenua as an
important source of kai moana and
home to a range of taonga species.
Built environment
However we choose to live in the
future, we need infrastructure like
transport, energy and water networks in
the right places.
Climate change
We are already seeing the effects of
climate change on our communities,
businesses and ecosystems. What
more can we do to prepare for future
changes?
Do we have the balance right, are we
doing too much or not enough?
Albright said.
He said flyers were
distributed to residents last
week to ask if they wanted
a trap on their property.
The traps will use bait,
such as carrots, apples,
peanut butter and visual
lures, to attract the
possums.
Alex Albright
Albright said staff will
check the traps every
morning for the two-week
period. Any possums
caught will then be disposed
of.
While a considerable
amount of manpower will
be needed to check all the
traps, Albright said
they will be “chucking
everything we
have at it”.
He said the
PFBP plans to
run the trapping
programme annually
over winter,
when the possum’s
food supply is low,
making them more
inclined to take the bait.
“(Possums) do a lot of
damage,” Albright said.
“They go after the
insects, they go after the
foliage, they can eat bird
eggs.
“Ultimately we don’t
want any possums here,”
he said.
Albright estimated there
are more than 100,000 possums
in PFBP’s 23,000ha
operation zone.
After the traps had been
operational for two weeks,
PFBP staff will bring them
in and prepare them for
next year’s trapping programme.
“After the first pulse, I
still imagine there’s going
to be a lot of possums
out there. This is just to
get things rolling and get
things started.”
When asked whether
the traps pose a risk to
pets like domestic cats,
Albright said the trapping
programme is a low-risk
method.
While cats could end up
in the traps, Albright said
they would not be harmed
and team members would
release them very quickly.
“It is harmless and they
will get released.”
He said if a cat walked
into a trap, they would
likely do it at night.
Albright said cat owners
may want to keep their
pets indoors overnight
during the two week
programme.
Lioness - The bold new novel from the Women’s Prize
Longlisted author Emily Perkins
Perkins is an extraordinary writer’ The Sunday Times You know how we say we
devoured a story, and also that we were consumed by it? Eating and being eaten. It
was like that with Claire, for me. From humble beginnings, Therese has let herself
grow used to a life of luxury after marrying into an empire-building family. But
when rumours of corruption gather around her husband’s latest development, the
social opprobrium is shocking, the fallout swift, and Therese begins to look at her
privileged and insular world with new eyes.
In the flat below Therese, something else is brewing. Her neighbour Claire believes
she’s discovered the secret to living with freedom and authenticity, freeing herself
from the mundanity of domesticity. Therese finds herself enchanted by the lure of
the permissive zone Claire creates in her apartment - a place of ecstatic release.
All too quickly, Therese is forced to confront herself and her choices - just how did
she become this person? And what exactly should she do about it?
Dice
by Claire Baylis
Four teenage boys invent a sex game based on rolling dice and doing what the
numbers say. They are charged with multiple sexual offences against three teenage
girls. Twelve random jurors are brought together in a trial to work out what actually
happened. Only they can say whether crimes have been committed and who
should be punished. How does the jury find? Dice is a stunning courtroom drama
told from the perspective of a diverse group of ordinary people - the jury. How will
twelve women and men, aged from eighteen to seventy-two with hugely disparate
backgrounds, beliefs and experience, decide whether consent was given or crimes
were committed? How can they possibly arrive at a unanimous verdict? How will
justice be properly served? In this dazzlingly accomplished and gripping debut novel,
chapters are told through the point of view of each juror as the trial unfolds. The
reader too becomes a jury member as the evidence is presented and information is
withheld, fragmented and re-told by different witnesses.
outside back Gabe Casey has
been named in Canada’s 32-
man squad to tour Tonga next
month.
The squad for the two-test
series was announced last week.
The uncapped Casey was named
in the team to tour Brazil last
year but did not take the field.
Casey, 23, made his Wave debut
earlier this season. He previously
played for the Toronto Arrows
in North America’s Major
League Rugby competition.
Casey, who hails from Ottawa
and studied at the University of
Victoria in Ontario, started in
all but one of the Wave’s round
robin matches at centre or on
the right wing.
The Wave face Sydenham at
Saint Leonards Square in the
Metro Premier plate semi-final
at 3pm on Saturday. They failed
to make the cup semi-final after
losing to New Brighton 25-21
in the elimination final at the
weekend.
Casey has also been involved
with coaching at St Andrew’s
College this season.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
The Diamond Harbour ferry service
THE DIAMOND Harbour ferry
wharf at Lyttelton Port, once a
favourite diving platform for
school children, also served local
ferry services for well over a
century, with ferries connecting
a number of jetties around
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
– from Te Waipapa Diamond
Harbour, to Motu-kauati-iti
Corsair Bay and Ōtoromiro
Governors Bay.
In 1852, Mark Stoddart
assumed ownership of the
Diamond Harbour land and
identified the necessity of a jetty
to expedite the movement of
goods and produce from his
farm across the short distance
by water to Lyttelton’s port. The
definitive date of Diamond Harbour’s
jetty construction is not
documented, but evidence from
Stoddart’s journal points to its
existence by at least 1862. There
are indications its creation could
be attributed to a ‘Mr Grubb’,
quite possibly John Grubb, the
respected boat and wharf builder
from Lyttelton.
Stoddart relinquished a significant
portion of his Diamond
Harbour land to his mortgage
holders in 1871. By 1874, the land
was marked for subdivision,
and Harvey Hawkins, a well
known entrepreneur from Lyttelton,
took possession in 1876.
Hawkins constructed the notable
Godley House on the headland,
which gained popularity – or
some might say notoriety – for
its sociable events, with well-todo
guests from Christchurch
arriving on steam ferries for
weekend pleasantries.
Due to the increased
popularity, a consistent ferry
service was introduced from
Lyttelton to Diamond Harbour
by September 1891. The SS John
Anderson plied a regular ferry
service bringing revellers to
Harvey Hawkins’ Godley House
and its pleasure gardens, with
the Lyttelton Port facilities
being upgraded to support this
increased traffic.
At this time, there was
discussion about charging for
the use of the Diamond Harbour
jetty, with complaints that
passengers had been charged a
6 shilling landing fee on Boxing
Day. However, the Lyttelton
Harbour Board decided against
such ‘entrepreneurship’, and the
use of the Diamond Harbour
jetty was declared free of charge
to the public.
Despite the entry fees to his
increasingly popular social
facilities, Hawkins encountered
financial difficulties in the early
1890s. He attempted to sustain
himself by leasing the property
for use as a hotel, pleasure
gardens and a park, but these
efforts were unsuccessful. He
eventually declared bankruptcy
in 1894, and in 1897, the property
reverted back to the Stoddart
family. The impressionist painter
Margaret Stoddart, daughter of
Mark and Anna, lived there until
1913, creating a number of her
most famous works. Meanwhile,
the day trip by steam ferry across
to the Godley House environs
remained popular with weekend
visitors from around the harbour
and beyond.
A significant development occurred
in 1913 when the Lyttelton
Borough Council purchased
140 hectares of land from the
Stoddart Estate, incorporating
Diamond Harbour as a suburb of
Lyttelton. The resulting growth
in water traffic led to the addition
of an ‘L’ shaped extension to
the jetty in 1915, and from this
time on it became known as the
Diamond Harbour Wharf.
By 1926, the growing suburb
of some 38 houses catered to
tourists on the weekends for
picnics, excursions and fishing
parties, while the village’s
professional residents and their
children commuted daily to
work and school via the steam
ferry to Lyttelton port’s railway
station and via locomotive to the
city of Christchurch.
In 1928, in response to ever increasing
water traffic, a prohibition
was placed on private boats
mooring at the wharf, facilitating
easier disembarkation for ferry
passengers. Despite decades-long
difficulties in procuring a
reliable water supply, the village
continued to grow through the
thirties and beyond. It was from
this time the Diamond Harbour
ferries – such as the Owaka,
Moturata, Reo Moana, Manuka,
and the Awhinanui, followed
by Onawe and today’s Black
Diamond – came to symbolise
the harbour way of life we know
and love today.
Great turnout for awards evening
THE SOUND of excited chatter
reverberated around the Mt
their sponsors.
There was a great turnout,
with friends and families of
the recipients in attendance,
along with supporters of the
foundation.
Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation chair Martin
achievements, but also to
recognise the sponsors of the
awards programme.
“Without the sponsors,
the scholarships and awards
programme would stretch the
foundation financially, so we
really appreciate their support.”
The recipients had the
opportunity to meet their
sponsors and thank them
personally.
The sponsor of the
14 Bay Harbour News Wednesday July 12 2023
keep it local
and support businesses in your community
What’s On at the Lyttelton Club 328
JUNE at the Lyttelton Club 328 was jam
packed with events peaking with the Club’s
150th Year Celebrations.
“It was an amazing weekend here in
celebration of 150 years of the Lyttelton
Club. 150 years of being a part of this
amazing and progressive community.
The success of this weekend would not
have happened without your support
- our members. Thank you,” said the
management team. “The Lyttelton Club
has seen enormous changes over the
last 150 years, and we are under no
illusion that the years ahead will be
equally challenging. In looking back, it
is impossible not to be impressed by the
level of dedication our Club members
have given to the Lyttelton Club. To have
survived the challenges so far, there has
been strong loyalty amongst our members
and support not only from the Lyttelton
area but Sumner, Heathcote, and beyond.”
July is also shaping up to be another
exciting month of events.
“Members asked for more LIVE
screenings of international sporting events
to enjoy in the sports hall. We listened, and
were excited to kick off this request with
the UFC 290 Championship Challenge last
Sunday.”
Queen and BeeGees fans - here’s one for
you. An afternoon of live music on Sunday
23rd July, 2pm, presented
by Madsen Promotions.
“We are SUPER
EXCITED and so privileged
to be able to bring this
show to the Lyttelton Club.”
In record sell out
performances up and down
the country, Paul Madsen
and the team will deliver
the silver bullet hits from
these two iconic bands;
Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy
Little Thing Called Love,
Night Fever, Islands in
the Stream; plus, so much
more.
Paul
Madsen
“This is not an event you’ll want to miss
out on! It is going to be EPIC!”
To be close to the band,
tickets are now available to
access the top bar and lower
lounge areas of the Club during
the performance. Limited
tickets available. Talk to the bar
team; or buy your ticket online
at EventFinda.
Winding up the month on
Saturday 29th July sees the
return of the DnD Trio (Gigi,
Jojo & Mark). These guys are
regulars at the Club and pack
the dance floor with their
collection of pop rock covers.
Make a night of it and book in
for dinner.
The Club restaurant offers a delicious
selection of light meals that includes Chef
Steve’s signature Seafood Chowder, as well
as his iconic Ploughman’s Platters.
Mains are very competitively priced
ranging $16.50 for ocean Fresh Mussels in
the shell, steamed in white wine and garlic
and served with garlic bread, through to $26
for a succulent Ribeye Steak cooked to your
liking, served with salad and fries and a
choice of Mushroom Sauce or Garlic Butter.
And for kiddies’ rumbling tums, a
Kids’ Platter with Slido Burger, Fish Bites,
Chicken Bites, fries, fruit and a chocolate
treat for only $12.
The Restaurant is open Thursday and
Go-anywhere goliath loaded with luxury
IF A NEW Toyota Land Cruiser is
on your wish list but you have a few
extra notes in the bank, the Lexus
LX 500d is the next best option.
It’s a Land Cruiser on steroids in
terms of specification and luxury
and it sits in a part of the market
that has little competition in terms
of prestige and ability than, say,
Range Rover.
What’s more it’s an easy decision
to make if you have decided on
Lexus, there are just two models
– F-Sport and Limited both are
priced at $175,900.
As its nomenclature suggests
the F-Sport has design elements
that are a little on the sporty side
– black mesh grille, unique front
and rear bumpers, while inside
there are aluminium centre console
panels and coloured seat coverings.
The Limited has a chrome slatted
grille, woodgrain shift panel,
wood-rimmed steering wheel and
full black leather.
The only other real difference
lies with the suspension, the
F-Sport gets what Lexus describe
as performance dampers. In effect,
the ride is just marginally firmer,
although I certainly couldn’t detect
much difference between the
standard settings and those fitted to
the F-Sport; I climbed out of it and
stepped straight into the Limited,
there was no immediate feeling of
change.
Of course, if you were to explore
all of the driveline settings and
functions that make the Land
Cruiser/LX 500d so capable, the
chassis and suspension settings
would then come into play.
However, as capable as what it
is off-road, you don’t see too many
Lexus models charging through
the bush or high country tracks, it
is far more of a civilised seven-seat
family wagon that will lend itself to
any challenge, especially in terms
of towing, it is rated with a 3500kg
figure. If towing a horse float or
boat for your recreational pursuits is
what you require, then the Lexus in
this form is the vehicle for you. It is a
true sport utility vehicle with luxury
and quality elements that are true to
the Lexus ethos. For the children in
the second row of seats, each can be
entertained by their own personal
screens that are fixed to the rear of
the front seat head rests.
From a mechanical perspective,
the underpinnings are engineered
for life cross-country and, as I’ve
alluded to, there are many drive
modes that can be dialled in to best
suit the terrain ahead. If you are
heading on a sealed road journey
to, say, Akaroa or Arthur’s Pass
then the suspension and engine
turning parameters can be selected
to optimise engine performance
and/or economy.
Certainly, in terms of that
hill journey the F-Sport model
wouldn’t lean as much through
the bends, but on my evaluation
trip through the Malvern Hills I
can report the Limited model was
equally adept, and certainly there
was never a point where I thought
the handling was less than perfect.
Lexus has indicated that the LX
500d rides on the biggest wheels
LUXURY: The Lexus LX500d is filled with specification.
LEXUS LX500D LIMITED: Huge sport utility vehicle at 5.1m.
it has ever manufactured into a
model. At 22in and measuring 265
x 50 they have a wide footprint
meaning there is a lot of rubber
meeting the surface, which
provides a feeling of stability
and control; steerage is relatively
precise, and even thought the LX
500d weighs in rather tubby at
almost 2700kg it doesn’t feel bulky,
rather it feels somewhat agile given
its size (5.1m).
I also ventured onto a short
former forestry track near Hororata
and can report that even over
undulations the feeling of control
underneath is paramount, the
suspension simply cocoons the
occupants and all occupants are
treated to comfort levels that we
have always been able to relate to
with Lexus.
Under the bonnet sits a new
V6 diesel engine that also comes
courtesy of Toyota’s Land Cruiser.
The best way it can be described is it
is much the same design as the old
V8 that powered previous generation
models, but with two cylinders
fewer. It does get the benefit of a
twin turbocharging system which
provides power outputs greater
than previously, it is rated at 227kW
and a stunning 700Nm. Add in the
coupling to a 10-speed automatic
transmission, the relay of power to
each corner is seamless and constant,
there’s never a point when accelerator
input isn’t met.
It’s a quiet, fuss-free engine that
is amazingly honest, it has a lot
of work to do, constantly pushing
• Price – Lexus LX 500d
Limited, $175,900
• Dimensions – Length,
5100mm; width,
1990mm; height,
1895mm
• Configuration – V6,
four-wheel-drive,
3346cc, 227kW, 700Nm,
10-speed automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 8sec
• Fuel usage – 10.2/100km
nearly 3-tonne is a challenge, but
it is willing and doesn’t work hard,
which has a major bearing on how
much fuel it uses to get about its
business.
I was surprised. I didn’t think
I would come close to Lexus’
10.2-litre per 100km combined
cycle average claim, but when I
took the evaluation car back to the
dealership an 11.8l/100km was
showing on the readout. That along
with 7l/100km instantaneous usage
on a 100km/h highway cruise
(engine speed 1400rpm) means
fuel thrift is impressive.
On the subject of figures, the
LX 500d is also rather swift, it will
power to 100km/h from a standstill
in 8sec and will lunge through a
highway overtake in 5.6sec.
After a fortnight with the two
LX variants I quickly became very
familiar with the concept, that
on top of a drive mid-year in the
Land Cruiser 300 GR. There’s no
question where Toyota and Lexus
pitch these models. Each came with
a towbar, and although I only used
the latter to tow a light trailer and
recycling materials, they have been
designed for a serious role in terms
of transport. Each will go anywhere
and will take that off-road caravan
into some equally gnarly places
that make up New Zealand’s great
outdoors.
However, if you want the Lexus
just to be comfortable with for
everyday transport it’s comforting
to know it, too, will gently ease
you in and out of a tricky situation
with great vision and good
manoeuvrability given its size.
What’s more, it’s easy to drive
and relate to, you don’t need
any special techniques – just an
understanding of its bulk and
complex drive systems should
you find yourself with some loose
surface conditions ahead.
Most of all, though, the LX
500d is chock full of the luxury
ingredients you get with any
model from the Lexus stable,
that’s something the company has
classed as a major manufacturing
ingredient in all of its models. I
was reluctant to take the evaluation
cars back to the dealership, both
variants really grew on me, I simply
enjoyed the driving experience.
Which one would I buy?
The F-Sport, knowing those
performance dampers are sitting
underneath are just one more
reason to feel secure on the road.
74A MONCKS SPUR ROAD | REDCLIFFS
HOME SUMNER OFFICE | 2024
Our vision, from the very beginning, is to be the most relatable HOME specialists in our coastal communities. Our
journey began with the little red cottage in the heart of Redcliffs Village and now looking forward to 2024 we are
opening our new offices located in Sumner and Lyttelton. We are looking for likeminded people to join our team
that have the same passion for selling real estate in our coastal communities.
Our core focus is listing and selling HOMES from Waimairi Beach to Southshore, Heathcote Valley to Taylors Mistake
and Lyttelton to Akaroa. We operate with complete transparency, delivering the most honest and straightforward
real estate experience on offer. Ensuring we not only get a premium price for our clients but that they are part of
the entire process is a main objective.
We offer a genuine boutique brand for any individual looking to thrive under the guidance of agents with a
combined 25 years of experience in the industry. Additionally, we have a full support team of powerhouse
administrators, in-house social media and management.
If you are interested in becoming part of the HOME team contact Eddie Spry - 021 156 5884 today for further
information.
OFFERS OVER $499,000
(UNLESS SOLD PRIOR)
Here's your chance to own a rarely available, two bedroom
HOME with harbour views in the very heart of Lyttelton!
What a great opportunity to invest or to live and add value
over time.
The classic styling of this charming cottage not only gives
you an instant smile upon first impression, but stepping
inside it offers a spacious kitchen/dining with separate living
room, two heat pumps, a combined tiled bathroom and
laundry. The rear deck offers up stunning harbour views, no
matter what time of day, and steps down into a private
outdoor area make for the perfect entertainment space.
Enjoy all that this port town and the surrounding bays have
to offer, with a leisurely 2min stroll from your front door to
London St where all your favourite cafes, eateries and bars
are located. It's almost too convenient just to cross the road
for a dip in the Norman Kirk Memorial Pool, not to mention
the popular Bridle Path track only 10mins walk away or local
bands down at the Wunderbar most weekends!
This HOME speaks for itself with location, lifestyle and value
all wrapped up in one 208m2 (more or less) easy care section
that will hold the same appeal for decades to come.
