Friendship 

The International Day of Friendship 

aims to promote the significance 

of friendship across diverse 

cultures. To commemorate this 

special occasion, the United Nations 

encourages community groups, organizations,

The history of the International Day 

of Friendship dates back to its establishment 

in 2011 by the United Nations.

July 30th as the International Day 

of Friendship, although many countries 

celebrate it on the first Sunday of August.

Dubai Culture and Arts Authority 

organizes inaugural Art Souk 

Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai 

Culture) organized the inaugural 

Art Souk at Al Jalila Cultural Centre 

for Children (AJCCC) on June 17 

and 18. The event is part of Dubai Culture’s 

efforts to achieve the vision of His Highness 

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, 

Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE 

and Ruler of Dubai, in establishing the emirate 

as a global center for culture and creativity. 

The Art Souk aims to involve people of all 

ages in cultural and creative events. In collaboration 

with the Sikka platform, Dubai Culture 

highlighted various works in visual arts, 

painting, sculpture, photography, design, and 

digital and multimedia. The event showcased 

creative products inspired by local traditional 

crafts, offered by small and medium enterprises, 

creative centers, and specialized studios 

in Dubai. 

The Art Market at the Souk featured works 

by artists and creative professionals, including 

Sxill Lab, Mawaheb, Dot Sew, Sjdana traditional 

carpet weaving, Galerie Kariman Art, 

and photographers Hamad Al Jasmi, Saif 

Alreyami, and Mohamed Ahmed Aldanhani. 

Additionally, artists specializing in the tradition 

of Talli weaving, such as Mona Fares, Haya Al 

Marzooqi, Mariam Al Obeidli, Leena Al Marzouqi, 

and Sara Al Khayyal, demonstrated the 

craft’s significance to the UAE. 

Moreover, the Pottery Market offered a marketplace 

for pottery and ceramics. AJCCC’s 

pottery department showcased the work of 

ten members, presenting functional and decorative 

pottery items. The Art Souk provided 

the public with the opportunity to purchase 

unique and valuable artworks and sculptures 

from the participating talent. 

Adel Omar, Senior Special Project and Media 

Director at AJCCC, expressed that the Art Souk 

allows the audience to explore the local art 

scene’s development and richness, offering 

insights into the ideas and visions of art pioneers

Eiman AlQubati, an Emirati visual artist, 

has a background in Biomedical 

Engineering Technology and holds a 

Master’s degree in Business Administration. 

However, her true passion lies in the 

world of art. Eiman believes that painting is 

a genuine medium for expressing emotions, 

hopes, and meditation. 

Nature serves as her primary inspiration, 

particularly landscapes. Through her artwork, 

Eiman deeply reflects her special bond with 

nature, creating vibrant and colorful masterpieces. 

Recently, Eiman received three certificates 

from Bingyol’s Art Academy, focusing on Art 

Management, advancing her art career and 

marketing, and exploring art trends and NFTs. 

She came in second place in the Qasr al 

Watan painting competition in 2021. Additionally, 

she received the Helveart Merit Award for 

“Open Art” in March 2023. 

In addition to taking part in World Art Dubai 

2023, her artwork was displayed in the Theatre 

of Digital Arts as an immersive 360-degree 

exhibition. Additionally, she took part in two 

exhibitions in June 2023. The first exhibition 

took place at Picasso Gallery in Dubai from 

3rd to 9th June, while the second exhibition 

was held at Novotel Expo in Sharjah from 2nd 

June to 2nd July. 

Eiman’s next significant participation will be 

in Abu Dhabi (ADIHEX) in September (2nd–8th) 

2023, where she will have her own booth at

and organizations, including Alserkal Arts 

Foundation, Art Dubai, Warehouse 421, 

Goethe Institut, and the Royal Commission 

of AlUla, where he has undertaken captivating, 

commissioned projects. Augustine’s 

artistic journey has taken him across borders, 

exhibiting his works in the Philippines, 

Malaysia, Latvia, Australia, the United States 

of America, and the United Arab Emirates, 

leaving an indelible mark on the global art 

scene. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Augustine 

Paredes is an accomplished author

AlUla Artist Residency offered by the Royal 

Commission of AlUla in 2022 provided a

Diaa Allam, a local calligrapher and 

live art performer based in the UAE,

With a passion for calligraphy since an early 

age, Allam embarked on his artistic journey in 

2011 when he created a book of 40 calligraphy 

designs to commemorate the 40th national day 

of the UAE. Since then, he has continuously 

pushed the boundaries of traditional calligraphy 

by merging it with modern graffiti, giving 

birth to his unique style known as “calligraffiti.” 

Self-taught in the basics of Arabic calligraphy, 

Allam fearlessly blended this traditional art 

form with abstract expressions, incorporating 

elements of graffiti into his work. The combination 

of calligraphy and graffiti, or calligraffiti, 

resonated deeply with Allam, as he believed it 

brought art closer to people and encouraged 

interaction. His live art performances allow him

his personal creations. He is the founder of 

“Naht Designs,” the first Emirati brand specializing

Jalal Luqman, an Emirati artist, sculptor, 

curator, and author, has been an 

active figure in the UAE’s art scene 

for over three decades. Based in Abu 

Dhabi, he has established himself as a significant 

artist both in the UAE and internationally, 

with exhibitions held in prestigious 

locations such as New York, Kuwait, Tokyo, 

Egypt, Morocco, the Czech Republic, Washington 

DC, Beijing, and the UK. 

One of Luqman’s notable contributions 

to the art world came in 1996 when he introduced 

digital art to the UAE. He became 

the first artist not only in the UAE but also in 

the entire GCC region to explore and utilize 

digital art as a medium. This pioneering spirit 

propelled him to fame as a mixed media 

artist, combining his expertise in traditional 

media with digital painting techniques. His 

innovative approach earned him several 

“firsts” in the UAE, including being recognized 

as the country’s first digital artist, the 

first freelance graphic designer, and the first 

contracted Emirati website designer for major 

government agencies and multinational 

corporations. 

Luqman’s artwork transcends traditional 

boundaries in both meaning and material. 

He skilfully merges computer software with 

metal, wood, and other common materials, 

creating art that goes beyond the limitations 

of the frame. His pieces engage and provoke 

viewers, inviting them to explore new 

dimensions and perspectives. With a master’s 

degree in Cultural and Creative Industries 

(MCCI), Luqman’s contributions to the 

Emirati art scene extend beyond his own 

artistic practice. He has become an advocate 

for the development of other artists in 

the UAE, establishing initiatives to promote 

art within the country. Leveraging his extensive 

knowledge and network in the Emirati 

art scene, Luqman has become a trusted 

advisor and consultant for various projects 

and activities. Luqman has represented the 

UAE as a member of numerous delegations 

to international art events, showcasing the 

talent and creativity of Emirati artists on the 

global stage. He has also served as a public 

speaker, passionately promoting and advancing 

art and artists in the UAE. Through 

seminars and workshops conducted in 

schools, colleges, and universities nationally 

and internationally, he shares his expertise 

and experiences, inspiring the next generation 

of artists. In addition to his artistic endeavours, 

Luqman has worked with prominent 

clients and organizations, including 

ADNOC, Samsung, HP, Abu Dhabi Media, 

Silicon Graphics, Mubadala, The Abu Dhabi

World Watercolor Month is 

an annual event that honors 

and promotes the ancient 

art form of watercolor painting, 

encouraging individuals to explore 

their artistic talents. Founded by Charlie 

O’Shields, the initiative aims to fill the void 

in the art calendar where watercolor was 

previously overlooked. World Watercolor 

Month is a dedicated period aimed at 

igniting people’s passion for watercolor 

painting while also emphasizing the significance 

of art and creativity in our world. 

This inclusive celebration welcomes all individuals, 

whether seasoned watercolorists 

or beginners, to participate. By using the 

hashtag #WorldWatercolorMonth, artists 

can share their watercolor (or gouache) 

creations throughout the month of July. 

Participants have the option to take on 

the exciting challenge of completing 31 

watercolor paintings in 31 days or simply 

sharing their artwork whenever they can. 

The primary focus is to cultivate a consistent 

artistic practice and enjoy the process 

of creating art. Watercolor painting has 

a rich history dating back to prehistoric 

times, with early examples found on cave 

walls. Throughout history, art has served 

as a unifying force, offering inspiration and 

solace during difficult times. It has also 

played a vital role in education, breaking 

down socioeconomic barriers. Sadly, art 

programs often face budget cuts in educational 

institutions. To address this issue,

Najwa Alghabban 


Najwa draws inspiration from her deep 

connection to the earth, particularly 

through wood and stone, as she 

seeks to evoke emotion through living 

subjects. Her artistic repertoire encompasses 

three distinct styles: acrylic and oil paintings 

on canvas, wood burning and sculpting plywood, 

and acrylic paint on glass, reminiscent 

of stained glass and polished marble. 

Najwa firmly believes that gazing into the 

eyes of animals and connecting with their 

spirit has a calming and healing effect. Her 

artwork is well-suited for private collections, 

but her ultimate aspiration is to see her pieces 

displayed in public buildings like hospitals or 

courts, where they can offer solace in stressful 

environments.

Mays Albaik: Exploring 

Geography, Body, and Language 

through Interdisciplinary Art 


Mays Albaik is a Palestinian artist 

whose interdisciplinary visual 

practice revolves around the 

intersection of body, language, 

and place. Through performance, video, 

sculpture, and installations, she weaves personal 

poetics into the socio-political fabric 

that shapes our relationships with geography. 

Her work seeks to uncover moments of 

mediated and immediate contact between 

place, body, and language, shedding light 

on the complex dynamics at play. 

Albaik holds an MFA from the Rhode Island 

School of Design and a B.Arch from 

the American University of Sharjah. As an 

alumna of the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging 

Artists Fellowship (SEAF), she has honed 

her artistic skills and developed a unique 

perspective on her practice. Recently, she 

presented her first solo exhibition titled ‘A 

Terranean Love Note’ at Tashkeel in Dubai, 

showcasing her artistic exploration of themes 

related to land, love, and the interconnectedness 

of human experiences. In addition 

to her solo show, Albaik has participated 

in various exhibitions that have brought her 

work to different audiences. Some notable 

exhibitions include ‘Qala 0.8900’ at Darat Al 

Funun in Jordan, ‘Before We Were Banned’ 

at Helix Art Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, 

‘Sawt 2a’ at Grey Noise in Dubai, ‘Mind the 

Gap’ at Tashkeel in Dubai, and ‘Change 

Coordinates + Someone Else’ at 1971 Design 

Space in Sharjah. Through these exhibitions, 

Albaik has demonstrated her ability 

to create thought-provoking installations that 

challenge preconceived notions and invite 

viewers to engage with complex narratives. 

Albaik’s early artistic practice draws inspiration 

from the oral narration of her family’s 

history, particularly her grandfather’s exile 

from Palestine. The winding path through 

geopolitical and cultural landscapes that led 

her to her current non-citizen resident status 

in her country of birth informs her creative 

process. By delving into these personal and 

collective stories, Albaik creates artworks 

that bridge the gap between individual experiences 

and broader socio-political contexts. 

Her installations often incorporate elements 

of performance, inviting viewers to participate 

and engage with the work on a visceral

Varsha Perera 


Varsha, originally from Sri Lanka, 

spent 20 years working as a marketing 

professional, with her last 

role being in Hong Kong for a multinational 

company. She holds a Bachelor 

of Science degree, pursued Management 

Accountancy through CIMA, completed a 

Marketing Management program at Harvard 

Business School, and became a Master 

Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. 

Throughout her life, Varsha had a talent for 

painting and drawing, which she continued 

as a hobby. However, a family emergency 

prompted her to resign from her corporate 

job and return to Sri Lanka. To relieve stress, 

she began painting and discovered the 

therapeutic world of mandala art. Varsha 

incorporated elements of mandalas into her 

vibrant acrylic paintings, using colors to express 

emotions, thoughts, and connections. 

Her art is known as ‘Varna by Varsha,’ 

where “Varna” means color in Sinhala. 

She combines mandala art with precision 

drawings and fine lines to tell stories inspired 

by the intricacies and complexities 

of the human mind. Varsha sees herself as 

a visual storyteller, sharing her experiences 

on canvas. 

In just one year, Varsha has exhibited her 

work internationally in Greece, established 

‘Varna by Varsha’ as a brand, launched a

social media handles, and even created 

an NFT collection on OpenSea. Her unique 

blend of business and creative skills from 

her marketing background has contributed

New York prosecutors crack down on 

art trafficking worth $165 million 

New York has gained a notorious 

reputation as a global hub for art 

trafficking, with prosecutors seizing 

hundreds of priceless artifacts looted 

from around the world. The Metropolitan 

Museum of Art and other major institutions 

and collectors have been compelled to return 

these works to more than a dozen countries in 

Asia, Europe, and Africa. The extent of these 

seizures and subsequent repatriations leaves 

no doubt about New York’s involvement in the 

illicit trade of antiquities, according to Christos 

Tsirogiannis, a forensic archaeologist and art 

historian. 

Tsirogiannis, along with David Gill from Kent 

Law School in Britain, has been assisting the 

Manhattan district attorney’s campaign to repatriate 

stolen art to their countries of origin. 

Since 2017, prosecutors have returned pieces 

looted from around 20 countries between the 

1970s and 1990s, including works from ancient 

Greece, the Roman and Byzantine empires, 

Iraq, China, India, and Southeast Asia. 

Under the leadership of district attorney 

Alvin Bragg, the pace of repatriations has 

accelerated. Over the past two years, more 

than 950 pieces worth $165 million have been 

returned to countries such as Cambodia, Pakistan, 

Egypt, Turkey, and Italy. Recently, Bragg 

returned two 7th-century stone sculptures to 

Beijing, valued at $3.5 million, which had 

been illegally exported from China and were 

loaned to the Met by collector Shelby White 

until their seizure this year. White, a billionaire 

philanthropist and Met trustee, had her home 

searched by prosecutors but is not accused 

of any wrongdoing. 

Tsirogiannis and Gill believe that White’s 

acquisitions, made with her late husband Leon 

Levy, may have been unwise, especially after 

the 1970 UNESCO Convention aimed at 

preventing the trafficking of cultural property. 

White had previously returned pieces to Italy 

and Greece, suggesting she should have 

had serious doubts about the origins of the 

remaining artworks. 

Other art dealers have also been forced 

to return works. Collector Michael Steinhardt 

handed back 180 antiquities worth $70 million, 

while art dealer Subhash Kapoor was sen- 

tenced to ten years in prison in India for his 

involvement in art smuggling. In September, 

Bragg returned 16 pieces to Egypt, including 

five seized from the Met, as part of a joint 

investigation with Paris authorities, which led 

to charges against the former president of the 

Louvre, Jean-Luc Martinez. 

In response to these issues, the Met has 

announced its intention to examine the provenance 

of hundreds of objects in its collection 

and return them to their countries of origin as 

necessary. The district attorney’s efforts and 

the growing awareness about the importance 

of provenance in the art world highlight the 

need to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural 

artifacts and restore stolen heritage to its 

rightful owners.

9999+1 NFTs appearing on the Ethereum 

blockchain. These guys are a unique mixed 

media artwork made by the artist himself. 

They are a combination of pixel art, hand 

drawings, textures and digital animation that 

reflect the transition and evolution of pixelation 

and traditional paintings in the digital art 

space.

Ghada Jarawan 


Ghada Jarawan, a 51-year-old artist 

from Beirut, Lebanon, has had 

a lifelong passion for painting. 

From a young age, she would 

paint on the walls of her parent’s house, despite 

their efforts to paint over her creations. 

As she grew older, Ghada found hidden 

places to draw, like the inside of closets 

and underneath the kitchen table. 

During her school years, she would often 

draw her teachers instead of focusing 

on her schoolwork. Ghada’s interest in art 

intensified when she studied Graphic Design 

at Notre Dame University in Lebanon. 

There, she was deeply influenced by the 

history of art, particularly the Renaissance 

period and realistic paintings. 

After getting married and starting a 

family, Ghada worked as a freelancer and 

temporarily set aside her artistic pursuits. 

However, in 2009, she discovered porcelain 

painting and traveled to Italy to enhance 

her skills. She studied at Hobbyceram 

Academy in Milan for six years, earning two 

Master’s degrees and a PhD in the fine arts 

of China painting. 

Ghada’s talent and dedication have garnered 

recognition in various competitions 

and exhibitions. She has received several 

awards, including first prizes and international 

cooperation recognition at prestigious 

conventions and shows in Italy and Switzerland. 

While Ghada is versatile in her painting, 

portraiture holds a special place in her 

heart. When she immerses herself in a 

portrait, she feels a deep connection and 

detachment from reality.

Zoha Abdulsater 


Zoha Abdulsater, a native of Beirut, 

Lebanon, grew up in a city known for 

its extremes. She pursued a Masters 

degree in Comparative Literature, 

focusing on an interdisciplinary study that 

compared Arabic novels with the paintings 

of Salvador Dali. Drawing from theories of 

psychoanalysis, she delved into the depths 

of both mediums, exploring the interplay between 

words and paintings. 

Zoha’s artistic journey expanded beyond 

literature as she ventured into photography. Her 

works were exhibited in various exhibitions in 

Lebanon and the United States. Additionally, 

she taught English Literature at the Lebanese 

American University of Beirut (LAU) for six years 

and contributed critical writings, including a 

publication in Intellect, The International Journal 

of Francophone Studies. 

Driven by her passion for art, Zoha established 

her own art gallery in the vibrant heart 

of Beirut’s Ashrafieh neighborhood. There, she 

showcases her own paintings, inviting people 

to experience her artistic expressions firsthand. 

Zoha’s artwork has been featured in exhibitions 

in both the USA and Lebanon. 

In 2021, Zoha’s dedication to her craft took 

on a philanthropic aspect when five of her 

paintings were sold in an auction at the Riverfront 

Museum in Chicago, with the proceeds 

going towards supporting institutions affected 

by the tragic Beirut Blast. She later exhibited 

four artworks in New York in September 2022. 

Zoha’s paintings capture the essence of 

human reality, often playing with hidden statements

Wissam Shawkat: The 

Calligraformic Revolution in 

Arabic Calligraphy 

“Before calligraphy was canonized as a form it was once considered revolutionary and 

experimental. My practice is an effort to take it back to that disorienting place that teeters on 

the edge of what is known and what is unfamiliar,” says artist Wissam Shawkat. 


Born in Basra in 1974, Wissam 

Shawkat’s journey as an artist began 

with a profound connection 

to the Arabic alphabet. During 

the Iraq-Iran war, amidst the chaos and 

bombings, he found solace in writing and 

repeating calligraphic letters on dusty tiles. 

Encouraged by his supportive parents, 

Shawkat became self-taught, embarking on 

a path that would shape his life and artistic 

expression. 

While pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering 

at Basra University, Shawkat realized 

that his true calling lay in the realm 

of calligraphy. His summers were spent 

honing his skills at a local sign shop, laying 

the foundation for his artistic endeavours. 

The rigid rules and structure of calligraphy 

fascinated him, but he yearned to break 

free and explore new possibilities. In recent 

years, Shawkat has gained recognition for 

his innovative calligraphic style, Al Wissam. 

This distinctive approach combines elements 

from various traditional scripts, such 

as Sunbuli, Jali Diwani, Eastern Kufic, and 

Thuluth, infusing them with a contemporary 

design aesthetic. His work is a testament 

to his constant desire to challenge conventions 

and push the boundaries of Arabic 

calligraphy. Shawkat is often described 

as a rule-breaker, a label he humbly acknowledges 

but doesn’t readily apply to 

himself. Yet, his artistry undeniably defies 

traditional norms. Even in his creative 

process, he blends traditional tools and 

materials with a modern aesthetic, using 

handmade paper reed pens and traditional 

inks to create works that provoke us to 

reconsider the essence and possibilities 

of Arabic calligraphy. This characteristic, 

known as Calligraformic, aligns perfectly 

with Shawkat’s artistic vision, positioning 

him on the periphery of tradition and 

opening doors to new interpretations. As a 

calligrapher turned conceptually motivated 

artist, Shawkat embarked on a path of 

self-discovery within the confines of a rigid 

and rule-based medium. Through years of 

devoted study of traditional scripts, compositions, 

and forms, he gained the necessary 

expertise to discern which principles could 

be challenged and reimagined, and which 

should remain intact. Shawkat’s artistic exploration 

goes beyond the literal meanings 

of Arabic letters, delving into their graphic 

value and visual impact. He deconstructs 

and rearranges elements, such as cutting 

off the sharp tail of a ‘ha’ and experimenting 

with angles and serializations using pen or 

brush. The resulting forms transcend their 

original context, evoking a sense of monumentality 

that transcends the boundaries 

of the Arab world. His artistic influences 

range from old Turkish masters to movements 

like Bauhaus, Geometric Abstraction, 

Futurism, Cubism, and even the collages of 

Cecil Touchon. With his latest body of work, 

Shawkat introduces the term “Calligraform” 

to describe his style and approach. It encompasses 

his focus on the forms of the 

letters, their inner and outer spaces, and 

their graphic qualities. Through the meticulous 

exploration of calligraphic characters’ 

precise shapes, Shawkat merges them with 

his unique artistic vision, bridging the gap 

between the known and the unfamiliar. 

Wissam Shawkat’s artistic journey represents 

a revolutionary approach to Arabic 

calligraphy. He challenges the established 

norms, reimagining the art form in ways that 

are both disorienting and captivating. By 

emphasizing the forms, spaces, and graphic 

qualities of Arabic letters, he expands the

Yousef Al-Habshi, an accomplished 

Emirati photographer, has dedicated 

his craft to the fascinating 

realms of “macro” and “micro” 

photography. Since acquiring his first camera 

in 2010, Al-Habshi has been captivated 

by the intricacies of close-up photography, 

immersing himself in a world where even 

the tiniest details come to life. Al-Habshi’s 

exceptional talent has earned him numerous 

accolades, both locally and internationally. 

He boasts an impressive collection 

of international gold medals, with one of 

his most notable achievements being the 

consecutive first place wins at the Emirates 

International Photography Contest in 2012 

and 2013. His exceptional skills and artistic 

vision have also been recognized by His 

Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed 

Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, who honoured 

Al-Habshi for his remarkable achievements. 

On the international stage, Al-Habshi 

achieved a significant milestone by winning 

first place in the prestigious “Nikon Small 

Worlds” competition, specializing in scientific 

micro-photography. He became the first 

Arab and Emirati to claim this coveted title 

since the competition’s inception in 1975. 

This remarkable achievement showcases 

Al-Habshi’s ability to capture the hidden 

beauty of the microscopic world and his 

dedication to pushing the boundaries of his 

craft. Al-Habshi’s talent extends beyond the 

realm of competitions and exhibitions. He 

has curated a series of individual and joint 

exhibitions, including his first scientific photographic 

exhibition in collaboration with the 

University of New York Abu Dhabi in 2016. 

This groundbreaking exhibition explored 

the scientific aspects of composition and 

the characteristics of composite eyes, captivating 

audiences with its unique blend of 

art and science. Al-Habshi has also participated 

in international exhibitions in China, 

such as the “Three Shadows” exhibition in 

Datong City, which fostered a collaborative 

partnership between the festival administration 

and the Hamdan Bin Mohammed 

International Photography Award (HIPA). 

Furthermore, he showcased his works at 

the International Festival of Photography 

(Xposure) in Sharjah in 2018. 

In 2019, Al-Habshi’s talent was showcased 

at “The Unseen” exhibition held at 

Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi, further 

solidifying his reputation as a prominent 

photographer. This exhibition allowed audiences 

to explore the hidden wonders of 

the natural world through Al-Habshi’s lens, 

providing a glimpse into the extraordinary 

beauty that often goes unnoticed. Al-Habshi’s 

contributions to the scientific community 

are equally remarkable. He has shared 

his captivating images of insects and their 

intricate parts with several foreign universities, 

enabling new scientific projects and 

specialized studies. His works have also 

served as valuable resources for students 

conducting academic research and graduation 

projects in the field of entomology. 

The impact of Al-Habshi’s photography extends

images have graced the pages of National 

Geographic Al Arabiya Magazine, a prominent 

media platform that recognized the exceptional 

quality of his work. The magazine 

featured Al-Habshi’s photographs as the

of the natural world. His photographs have 

also been published in local newspapers, 

specialized photography magazines, and
