Style Magazine - August 2023

Wondering where you should take your friends this summer? All the places mentioned in this month’s feature, “Wine Time!” are a “grape” place to start. Turn to page 54 for tasteful tasting rooms, vineyards with a view, spots where you can sip while also savoring a meal, and more. My out-of-town guests were beyond impressed with the amazing vino (particularly the petite sirahs and bold barberas), state-of-the-art spaces, and stunning scenery. Need something else to show your forever friends? All the farm-to-fork flavors found ’round town on almost every menu. From cocktails made with just-picked peaches to pizza topped with slow-roasted sweet corn and cherry tomatoes, we were hard-pressed to find a meal made without something locally grown—and even checked out a farmers’ market (for a list of regional ones, flip to page 86). But the most exciting (and my personal favorite) expedition was exploring a handful of farm-to-bottle breweries—places that grow their ingredients (hops, honey, mandarins, and more) on-site. Check out “Good Beer Hunting” (page 84) for a roundup of where to find these hidden, home-grown gems—with recommendations on what to try.

| editor’s letter |
As much as I love my family, sometimes
a weekend away with girlfriends is
essential. Last month, I did just that
with four of my closest childhood gal
pals. Though distance, marriage, and
momhood have attempted to pull us
apart, our roots are so deeply established that the
friendship continues to grow as time ticks on.
Maybe it’s because we watched each other
grow up—from the pubescent years of braces,
bad acne, and embarrassing haircuts into the
confident, wise women we are today; perhaps
it’s because we know, and accept, everything
about one another (the good, the bad, and
the awkward); or maybe it’s because we’ve
supported each other through breakups,
health scares, significant life changes, and loss.
Whatever the reason for our strong bond, once a year, we leave our husbands and
babies behind and get away together for good food, good times, and good wine.
Speaking of the latter, our most recent trip was a staycation (for me) that, naturally,
included adventuring to some of our area’s wonderful wineries. Wondering where
I took my friends—and where you should take yours, too? All the places mentioned
in this month’s feature, “Wine Time!” are a “grape” place to start. Turn to page 54 for
tasteful tasting rooms, vineyards with a view, spots where you can sip while also
savoring a meal, and more. My out-of-town guests were beyond impressed with
the amazing vino (particularly the petite sirahs and bold barberas), state-of-the-art
spaces, and stunning scenery.
Something else I was proud to show my forever friends? All the farm-to-fork
flavors found ’round town on almost every menu. From cocktails made with justpicked
peaches to pizza topped with slow-roasted sweet corn and cherry tomatoes,
we were hard-pressed to find a meal made without something locally grown—and
even checked out a farmers’ market (for a list of regional ones, flip to page 86).
But the most exciting (and my personal favorite)
“Be slow
expedition was exploring a handful of farm-tobottle
breweries—places that grow their ingredients
to fall into
(hops, honey, mandarins, and more) on-site. Check
friendship, out “Good Beer Hunting” (page 84) for a roundup of
but when
where to find these hidden, home-grown gems—
with recommendations on what to try.
you are in,
Did my friends and I do anything else besides
continue eat and drink? Does talking, laughing, and lounging
firm and
by a pool count? It may not have been a weekend
of intense workouts, but it was a weekend that
constant.”
reminded me how incredibly fortunate I am to have
—Socrates
true (and super fun!) friends and to live in a place I
feel proud to call home. Cheers!
?“I like the delicate flavor and bubbles in
sparkling wine, especially prosecco. Plus,
it's perfect for light, summery drinks like
a bellini or Aperol spritz.”
—Jennifer Maragoni
What's your
favorite
type of beer
or wine?
“I love a dry yet fruity sauv blanc or crisp
albariño, especially during the summer.
But if you take me to a brewery, it’s a
hazy IPA for the win!”
—Bella Nolen
“I love a hazy IPA as much as the next guy,
but nothing beats the creaminess of a
stout when I want to sit back and enjoy
the summer alongside a tasty drink.”—
Ray Burgess
“I always say that anything is possible
with a bottle of rosé and friends!”
—Theresa Arnold-Hale
“In the fall and winter, it's absolutely a
buttery chardonnay, but lately I've been
really into rosé. It's refreshing in warm
weather and perfect for just about any
occasion, with or without food. What's not
to love?”—Caitlin McCulloch
“Over several years of drinking wine, I’ve
come to the conclusion that the anise
tasting note is my favorite characteristic,
which is commonly found in nebbiolo (an
Italian red-wine grape).”—Gary Zsigo
“I love a good pinot noir (my current
favorite is Meiomi)—one that’s
well-rounded, velvety smooth, and fruitforward
with a memorable finish.”
Placer County Association of Realtors (PCAR) honored a
group of 30 graduating Placer County high school seniors with
the association's annual $1,000 scholarship award. Each recipient
Since PCAR’s inception in 2011, the organization has awarded
Congrats to Jennifer Bassett, the founder and executive director
Folsom broke ground on Prospector Park and Fire Station
34—two highly anticipated projects in Folsom Ranch.
Prospector Park, located at 4578 Sparrow Drive, will feature a
multi-use sports field, lighted ball field, sports courts, picnic
areas, nature zones, a dog park, and play area with dueling
zip lines, a roller slide, and 20-foot rope climber—all designed
with sustainability and eco-friendly practices in mind. Fire
Station 34 will be equipped with modern facilities and advanced
firefighting equipment, helping to ensure the community's
safety by improving response times and expanding coverage.
The California Public
Utilities Commission
approved a second area
code (837)—also known as an
“overlay”—to the 530 regions,
which serves counties
like Placer, Amador, and
El Dorado, among many
others. The 530 area code
is projected to run out of
available prefixes during the
third quarter of 2025; the
837 area code will ensure
telephone numbers continue
to be available to meet the
demand while minimizing
customer inconvenience.
Back-to-
School Cool
Tips for a Smooth Transition
by JENNIFER RESNICKE
The end of summer break is fraught with conflicting emotions, but
one thing has always been true of the back-to-school season: It’s a
tough transition. To help families make the switch from summer fun
to focused academics, we asked local experts for their top tips to
help students of all ages.
REST IS BEST
Though quality sleep is
important year-round, the
long days of summer sunshine
and lack of routine tend to
send sleep schedules sliding,
especially for teenagers.
Tip #1: Reestablish Routines
For younger kids, start bumping
up bedtimes (and wakeup times)
by 15-20 minutes a day a few
weeks before school starts—
until kids are going to sleep and
waking up when they need to for
the school year.
Make older kids part of the
process by asking how long they
think they need to get ready and
then doing some “trial runs” the
week before school, ensuring
they factor in time to eat
breakfast, catch the bus, etc.
Kathryn Buchan, a counselor
at Buljan Middle School, says
that “reestablishing a good sleep
routine—where kids are getting
9-13 hours of sleep a night—is
especially important for middle
schoolers.”
The exact number of hours
of sleep recommended for each
developmental stage varies, so
be sure to consider your child’s
individual needs and reach out
to their pediatrician for advice.
Healthy Habits
In addition to getting the right
Spotlight on Illustrators
by JENNIFER MARAGONI
Think of your favorite children’s book, concert poster, or graphic
T-shirt. Most likely, you love it not only for what it says, but for the
images it bears. Those images are often the work of illustrators,
whose job is to enhance text with original artwork. These local
illustrators share a lifelong love of drawing but took unique paths to
turn their passion into a profession.
Sharon Fujimoto-
Johnson
sharonfj.com
Sharon Fujimoto-Johnson has been making art
her whole life. While recovering from cancer
during the pandemic, the Roseville resident realized
her dream of writing and illustrating children’s
books. An agent discovered her on Twitter and
her first picture book, The Mochi Makers, will hit
shelves next year.
How did your first book come about?
During my recovery, I suffered major complications
that rendered me unable to eat by mouth. During
that time, I thought a lot about where food, family
stories, and love intersect. This inspired me to write
The Mochi Makers, a heartfelt story about Japanese
rice cakes, immigrant family stories, and love.
What mediums do you work in?
Traditional mediums like gouache, acrylic, and
pencil, as well as
digital collage. I
created the art in
The Mochi Makers
by digitally layering
pencil drawings,
digital paintings,
hand-painted papers,
family photographs,
heirloom kimono
fabrics, and kitchen
cloths embroidered by
my grandmother.
What inspires you?
Family stories,
kindness, poetry,
beauty, wonder in
the natural world,
and the joie de vivre
of children. I’m also
inspired to tell stories
that will nudge readers’
hearts open a bit and
leave a positive impact
in the world. My second
book, Shell Song, is
inspired by the shells my
grandfather collected
in a Japanese-American
incarceration camp in
Hawaii during World
War II.
What do you
wish more people
understood about
illustration?
A picture book, though
seemingly simple and
small, is a work of art
created by an authorillustrator,
or author and
illustrator, plus an entire
team of people. When a
reader holds one of my
books in their hands,
they’re holding my whole
heart and the work
of many people who
believed in that book.
Nate Reifke
saltytimbers.com
When Nate Reifke
was in college,
a skateboard company
saw some T-shirts he
designed for the UC
San Diego surf team
and hired him to
design skateboards,
launching his career.
His clients include many
well-known brands,
including Red Bull, Reef,
and Patagonia. As a
commercial illustrator,
the Pollock Pines-based
artist says his job is “to
be chameleon and make
whatever people need.”
How do you view
your role as an
illustrator?
To listen and learn first.
The hope is to make
something that speaks
for a brand authentically
so people will genuinely
connect with it and
adopt it as their own.
What mediums
do you work in?
Mostly pen and pencil,
but I also really enjoy
watercolor. The
last couple
of years, I’ve
been using
an iPad a
lot, because
so much of
my work is
for screen
printing;
working
digitally speeds
up the process and
allows me to make
much cleaner files.
What inspires you?
Nature—the textures and
colors, and the seasons in the
mountains. But probably and
more importantly, I'm inspired
by people who say “f--- it” and
do their own thing. We can all
learn from people who see the
world a little differently.
What do you wish more
people understood
about illustration?
That [illustrators] don't have
full control over their own
creativity. I've learned ways
to coax it out, but I've had
to adapt and recognize the
ideas worth pursuing and
the ones I need to let go of.
Brian Wallace
brianwallaceart.com
As a young boy,
Folsom artist
Brian Wallace carried
around a small
notebook to sketch
family members.
Art was his favorite
subject in school; after
college, he was hired
as an art director for a
large company. “It was
there that I found the
opportunity to bring
together my artistic
abilities and passion for
illustration.” Wallace’s
work is familiar around
Folsom. He designs the city’s
annual Community Service
Day T-shirt, illustrates labels
for Red Bus Brewing Co., and
sells his prints, stickers, cards,
and books at Ruby’s Books.
What mediums do you
work in?
Much of my work is digital
illustration, which provides
a lot of flexibility. However,
my process typically begins
with a sketch on paper,
allowing me to explore and
refine concepts.
How do you describe
your style?
It’s uniquely me. People tell
me they can spot my work
from a mile away, and that's
a great feeling! I think it's
because I use simple shapes,
clean lines, and vibrant
colors.
What inspires you?
Nature, landscapes, and
travel. Capturing the essence
of a place and making it
relatable is a fundamental
starting point. As a
California native, many of
my recent creations have
been inspired by the beauty
of my home state. However,
inspiration also emerges
from the joy of sharing
something captivating with
others.
Josh Nash
joshuanashillustrates.com
Roseville resident Josh
Nash has been drawing
for as long as he could hold a
pencil. In 2004, he was hired by
Scholastic Books to illustrate
a series of chapter books
called The Kids of Einstein
Elementary. His current
work includes an illustrated
map of Old Town Auburn
and a comic strip series on
Instagram called Harriswood
(@harriswoodcomic). Nash
draws with black pencil,
adding color with digital
watercolor brushes.
How do you view your
role as an illustrator?
To tell the part of the story
that isn’t included in the text.
Every part of an illustration
can be enlisted to fill in the
blanks left by the author.
How do you describe
your style?
I don’t know how to describe
it, because it’s simply what
falls out of my pencil when I
sit down to draw, but I know
it has something to do with
having been raised on Peanuts,
Calvin & Hobbes, and Disney
movies.
What inspires you?
Character and humor. When
I create something, I want to
end up meeting someone new
and interesting who is going to
give me a few chuckles along
the way.
What do you wish more
people understood about
illustration?
The more effortless a drawing
appears to be, the more
excruciating it was to make!
Disabled
The ABCs of
Learning Difficulties
by MELISSA STRAND
When you suspect your child has
a learning difficulty, it can feel
overwhelming. Luckily, local experts have
some actionable advice to help families
spot the early signs, ensuring children are
properly diagnosed and receive sufficient
support to set them up for success.
EARLY INTERVENTION IS KEY
If a child receives help for their specific
needs early in life, the chances for
learning and progress will be greater,
says Jennifer Stockslager, licensed
educational psychologist and owner
of Developing Minds Psychology
(developingmindspsychology.com).
"Parents know their children the best, so
as soon as you suspect difficulties, speak
with their pediatrician and teachers.
Some children may need short-term
intervention and others may need more
intensive long-term support.”
Also, don’t underestimate the timing
and effort it takes to see the progress
in early interventions. Natalie Powell,
certified dyslexia specialist, educational
therapist, and owner of Natalie LP
Therapy (natalielptherapy.com), says:
“Early intervention providers focus
on strengthening the weak processing
areas that cause academic or functional
difficulty. Therapy activities often appear
simple, but don’t be fooled; new brain
pathways are being built and that’s hard
work.” Give your child grace, compassion,
and time to grow at their pace during
this process.
include difficulty reading, doing math,
paying attention, following directions,
regulating emotions, and/or acting
out,” shares Stockslager. Keeping an
eye on these areas could lead to extra
support and advocacy for your child,
in and out of the classroom.
One of the more common struggles,
dyslexia, can be recognized in many
ways. Marci Peterson, board certified
educational therapist and author
of The Dyslexia Guide for Adults
(marcipetersonet.com), shares that
“dyslexia is the most common cause
of reading and spelling struggles and
is a neurological condition in how the
brain processes language. A younger
student might struggle to sound
words out; while an older elementary
student may start guessing at words,
have trouble comprehending what
they read, and be poor spellers. An
adult with dyslexia typically is a slow
reader, a poor speller, and has a tough
time pronouncing complex words or
composing written correspondence.”
When it comes to diagnosing
dyslexia, Powell adds that “red flags
in elementary school include trouble
memorizing sight words, trouble
with phonics, slow or inaccurate
sounding out, poor spelling, and
reversing numbers, letters, or whole
words. In middle and high school,
these accumulated gaps cause
problems with reading speed and
comprehension, and the ability to
memorize verbal information by rote.”
SEEK SUPPORT
Meeting with your child’s teacher and
school district to discuss an Individual
Education Plan (IEP) can get them on
track to have the necessary support
and accommodations in a school
setting, ultimately allowing your child
to thrive. In addition, consultations
and evaluations with your child’s
pediatrician and licensed specialists
and psychologists can provide formal
tools and plans to implement at
home. “If your child is struggling
with literacy-related skills and you
suspect dyslexia, email your principal
to request a psychoeducational
evaluation, or seek a private dyslexia
evaluation. Doing so will entitle them
to accommodations, such as extra test
time and a reduced homework load,”
suggests Powell.
AT-HOME ASSISTANCE
There are some functional tools to
implement at home that can make
a difference in supporting your
child’s needs, too. “Encourage your
child to listen to audiobooks that
are above their reading level, watch
educational shows, research topics
of interest, and participate in family
discussions. These activities will help
strengthen your child’s vocabulary
and background knowledge, which
they can use to compensate for their
dyslexia,” suggests Powell.
For further support and tools,
Peterson suggests “parents work with
pre-reading programs that emphasize
phonological awareness and phoneme
sequencing. Several programs are
designed to help students suspected of
having dyslexia learn to read and spell
at home or through private tutors.”
Keeping your child supported,
loved, and encouraged through the
process of diagnosing and supporting
a learning disability is key. According
to Stockslager, “Some of the best ways
to support your child are to listen and
talk with them about their challenges,
provide support and encouragement,
set reasonable expectations, and focus
on their strengths.”
Take a Hike
Sagehen Creek Loop
by RYAN MARTINEZ
LOCATED NEAR:
Truckee.
DISTANCE:
5.2-mile loop.
TRUCKEE
WILDLIFE
The Tahoe National
Forest is home to some
amazing wildlife, as well as
breathtaking views. While
they’re not always easy
to spot, here are a few
critters to look out for
while you’re out exploring.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Easy; heavily trafficked.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
Expect lots of people along
the beginning sections of the
trail; the deeper you go, the
more opportunity for solitude.
With ample water this year,
be prepared to cross creeks
and mud. Bring a swimsuit if
you want to take a dip in the
reservoir. Wear shoes with
traction and sun protection,
1
3
BIRDS
Bald Eagle. Easily
recognized with a
wingspan reaching seven
feet!
Golden Eagle. Most
often seen around rocky
outcroppings.
Osprey. Watch for these
around Donner Lake
diving for fish.
and bring plenty of water; as
always, practice Leave No Trace
principles.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
This family-friendly loop offers
Red-Tailed Hawk. Visible
all around our area, you’re
likely to see this bird
soaring in wide circles as
it hunts for a wide variety
of prey.
amazing wildflowers, wildlife,
streams, and all the beauty
that makes Truckee one of our
favorite local getaways.
FUEL UP:
With a hearty selection of
tasty fare, plus beer,
wine, and cocktails,
it’s hard to go
wrong with a
meal at Truckee
Tavern & Grill
(truckeetavern.
com), where “rustic
vibes meet
contemporary
creativity.”
Whether
you’re craving
a ribeye, burger,
lobster fettucine, or
hearty bowl of housemade
mac & cheese, there's
something for the whole family.
ANIMALS
Black Bear. A Tahoe
wilderness favorite that,
despite the name, can
be found in blonde and
cinnamon colors.
Bobcat. Very rare to spot!
Coyote. Often seen during
twilight hours.
Mule Deer. With a coat
that blends perfectly
into the forest, good luck
spotting this one.
Yellow-Bellied Marmot. I
once found one of these
near Horsetail Falls; you
may think it’s a beaver but
look again.
COOL STUFF
Fly High
3 Airplane Essentials
by TERRY CARROLL
I love traveling. Whether for
business or pleasure, one constant
that remains is finding travel
accessories that make trips easier.
Here are three items I never, ever,
leave home without.
“HEADPHONES”
OVER HEELS
While most people use
headsets with their phones,
airplanes open us up to
all kinds of new noises,
from screaming babies
and parents to jet engine
roar, and more. My go-to
in this category are the Bose Noise-Cancelling
Headphones 700. They’re comfortable (I’ve spent
10-hour flights with them on), sound great, and
have a battery life that lasts up to 20 hours. What
more do you need? $379, bose.com
• ROSEVILLE | SACRAMENTO | ROCKLIN •
BE IN “CHARGE”
My phone and all its apps
like to suck my iPhone
battery dry. Then there’s
my iPad, whose battery
tends to deplete faster
and faster with all the
media I watch. Tired of trying to find an outlet
that works in airports or on planes, I made the
switch to Anker PowerCore III 20K, and I can now
charge my phone and iPad multiple times off one
full charge. That’s right—no more worrying about
dead batteries! Did I mention it’s smaller than my
phone, too? $59.99, bestbuy.com
“PILLOW” TALK
There are ample travel
pillows to pick from, and
though a toddler pillow—
or any small pillow for
that matter—will work,
my favorite is the Rumpl
Stuffable Pillowcase. I
especially appreciate its
compact size, and the fact
that I’m just one sweatshirt or jacket away from
travel sleep comfort; you simply stuff the Rumpl
with a clothing item, and voilà! you’re resting
comfortably. $40, rei.com
ASK THE
EXPERT
by BELLA NOLEN
Photo ©F8 \ Suport Ukraine - stock.adobe.com.
Q: HOW DOES DANCE
IMPROVE A PERSON’S OVERALL
HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
A: All exercise improves one’s
overall health and physical
well-being—from weight loss
and increased energy levels,
to reduction in chronic health
conditions and improved brain
health and memory. But to
me, dance takes exercise to a
higher level. It adds joy. And
that is because dance is most
often a response to music. All
cultures and all ages respond to
music—whether it’s a rhythmic
drumbeat, a violin solo, a song, or
a full orchestra. Music lifts one’s
soul and connects people to one
another. All one needs to do to
cure the blues is turn on music,
and dance, dance, dance!
Blast from the Past
WOW-WORTHY MODERN MAKEOVER
T
he art of transforming a home
into a dream house requires
a keen eye for aesthetics,
meticulous attention to detail,
and a deep understanding of what
the client desires. Keeping those
standards at the forefront, Ryan
Gregerson and his team at RSG
Construction (rsg4homes.com)—a
Roseville-based business whose
motto is “do it right the first time”—
gave their client Cheryl C. and her
husband the property they’d always
envisioned.
The couple is the original owner
of their two-story, 3,800-square-foot
Folsom home built in 2001. “Our fivebedroom,
three-bath house was a
pretty basic track home of that era,”
Cheryl says. “There were oak kitchen
cabinets, tan tile countertops
and floors in the kitchen, and the
bathrooms had oak cabinets with
chrome and gold fixtures and 4x4
white tile throughout.”
After living with their dated
kitchen and bathroom for over 22
years, they knew it was time for a
change. “My husband was fed up
cleaning the rough kitchen tile
countertops, but I wasn’t a fan of
renovating—until we brought in RSG
to review possible options and ideas.
Once they recommended removing
a wall and expanding the kitchen
into a more open concept with a
larger island, I was convinced,” says
Cheryl.
“We want to make homes as
user-friendly as possible and adding
more space is often the way to do it,
so it made so much sense to remove
the wall and create a more open
layout for Cheryl and her husband
to host guests,” says Gregerson.
A modern kitchen makeover
provides the perfect opportunity
to revitalize this essential space,
combining functionality and aesthetics
to create a haven that reflects a
homeowner’s unique personality.
For this remodel, the emphasis was
on clean lines and simplicity. Opting
for sleek white and grey cabinetry with
panel doors and modern hardware,
Gregerson provided the couple with a
minimalist foundation and enhanced
the seamless modern aesthetic Cheryl
hoped to achieve. New luxury stainless
steel appliances were incorporated
throughout, including a wine
refrigerator, double oven, and chef-style,
double-door refrigerator. The custombuilt
window seat and large kitchen
island housing the cooktop provide the
perfect place for guests to relax while
Cheryl and her husband prepare meals
for friends and family.
The primary bathroom was
completed first, due in part to flooding
from a burst pipe that happened while
the homeowners were out of town. “The
damage was extensive, so RSG not only
helped with the remodel but also with
the basic reconstructing of the walls and
ceilings that were damaged,” says Cheryl.
As the adage goes, “Every cloud has a
silver lining,” and in this case it afforded
Cheryl the opportunity to have the
modern sanctuary she wanted.
After a careful evaluation of the
layout, new configurations were
implemented to create an open and
spacious ambiance. The choice of
materials and finishes ultimately set
the tone for the transformation with
smooth, natural stone—such as marble
tile for the walls—and sleek, modern
tile floors that exude elegance and
sophistication. Minimalistic geometric
tile patterns adorn the walls, while
a combination of glass and chrome
fixtures add a touch of contemporary
charm to the once-dated bathroom.
The standalone luxury bath and
modern rain head shower make the
spa-like space unrecognizable from
the original bathroom. In addition, the
cabinets, flooring, fixtures, electrical,
plumbing, countertops, backsplash,
paint, and tile were all replaced, too.
“The primary bathroom is beautiful!”
says Cheryl.
Along with the bathroom and kitchen
remodels, the homeowners also had
the bedrooms repainted, replaced light
fixtures, updated their closets to allow
for better organization, and changed out
their staircase, working with a company
recommended by Gregerson.
“Scope creep is real!” says Cheryl.
“[The RSG team was] always ready to
accommodate our change requests and
[were] very responsive and available to
answer questions via phone, email, or
text. Even after the project was complete,
if we had questions or any issues,
they made sure they were resolved as
quickly as possible. The crew at RSG is
comprised of quality people, and they’re
easy to work with.”
Does Gregerson have any advice for
people considering a remodel? “Set your
budget but have an overage amount for any
unforeseen circumstances. Also, estimates
can be more accurate if you know what
type of materials you’re wanting to use,
and delayed change orders slow down the
process. It's a marathon not a sprint.”
justice either; it’s something that needs
to be experienced in person! Choose
between their redwood deck, lower patio,
Iron Hub Winery & Vineyards
Lewis Grace Winery: Though
their indoor tasting room is a lovely
spot, the outdoor views—where you’ll
see the Crystal Mountain Range—can’t
be beat. Originally Irving Ranch, this
historic property named its wines after
patriot and soldier Lewis Grace. (The
Irving family was also part of founding
Apple Hill!) Stop in for a tasting or plan
WINE & DINE
Spots to eat and drink
Although BYO picnics are allowed
at most wineries, sometimes you
want (and need!) more. From quick
lunches to sit-down dinners, these
wineries offer drool-worthy meals
when cheese and crackers just
won’t cut it.
Helwig Winery
Di Stasio Vineyards: Italian roots
and sentieri (cocoa powder, sour cherry,
and vanilla), order an antipasti platter
TASTEFUL
TASTING ROOMS
Raise a glass to these
stunning spaces
When you enter a tasting room,
sometimes it’s primarily to beat
the heat or escape the rain, or
to go directly toward the wine.
But a tasting experience can be
so much more when you’re in an
environment that truly transports
you to the style, mission, and
passion of the business. Check
out a few of our favorites below.
Casino Mine Ranch: “It feels like
you’re walking into Kim Kardashian’s
house,” says Danielle Seagraves of
Amador Event Co. And she’s not far
off. Modern and new (we’re talking
opened in February 2023), Casino
Mine Ranch features high ceilings
and plenty of impressive, light-filled
windows. The clay wall behind the
tasting bar is especially noteworthy,
as it was artistically designed to
represent the property’s various
soil colors. 10690 Shenandoah
Château d’ Estienne: Though
the patio at Château d’ Estienne is
incredibly scenic, we couldn’t pass
up the opportunity to mention their
tasting room: an amazing, customdesigned
space that’s bright and
ultra-modern, with picturesque
views of the Sierra foothills, making
it a great spot to take in the scenery
when you’d rather sip indoors. 2700
Bonitata Boutique Wine:
Calling all history buffs! Built in
1874, Bonitata's Auburn tasting room
shares a space with their production
facility and barrel storage area. In
addition to reds and whites, sparkling
fruit wines are also available.
Another reason it gets our vote? It’s
located on Auburn Folsom Road—
within walking distance to both Old
Town and Downtown Auburn—so
no need to hit the curvy country
roads to get your sip on. 291 Auburn
MAKE IT A
WINECATION
Where to snooze after a
day of sipping
Who says you need to take a long car
ride or hop aboard a plane to take a
vacation? Here are a few local spots
where you’ll feel worlds away and be
in proximity to some of the region’s
best wineries.
Eden Vale Inn photo by Unique Angles Photography. Hotel Sutter photo by Farrell Photography.
Eden Vale Inn: Located in
Placerville, this bed and
breakfast is currently top-oflist
for local luxury retreats on
Tripadvisor. It’s a good choice for
something quainter than a large hotel
chain without sacrificing amenities,
like an on-site spa and complimentary
breakfast (with offerings that often
includes souffles and hot-fromthe-oven
scones). But with only
seven rooms on the property, it’s
best to book ASAP! 780 Springvale
Road, Placerville, 530-621-0901,
Hotel Sutter: Old West romance
meets modern-day living at this
charming hotel that’s “the” place to
stay in Sutter Creek. The on-property
restaurant—whose outdoor deck
overlooks Main Street—serves hearty
meals like chicken marsala, seasonal
pastas, and steaks. If you want to switch
from wine to whiskey, check out the
property’s Copper Bar, a speakeasyesque
spot whose curated selections
represent some of the world’s
finest. 53 Main Street, Sutter Creek,
The Murieta Inn & Spa: Grab
a complimentary early morning
“breakfast bag” before heading off
for a day of wine tasting at this newly
opened hotel in Rancho Murieta. If
you need a bit more local vino in your
life, the on-site Gate Restaurant offers
extensive El Dorado and Amador
selections. Be sure to ask the front
desk about the hotel’s shuttle services
to local vineyards, too! 7337 Murieta
Flower Farm Inn: Step back in
time while connecting to nature at this
historic space in Loomis. The property
is adjacent to the Flower Farm Cafe and
Casque Wines, making it a one-stopshop
for food and tastings. There’s also
a nursery and gift shop to explore! A
pond, orchards, and lush gardens await
steps outside the 1905 farmhouse
accommodations (cottages and private
cottages are available as well). 4150
Park Victorian: Overlooking
Downtown Auburn and sitting atop
Snowden Hill, this inn is close to all the
Auburn action. Before or after wine
tasting, have a casual meal at nearby
Auburn Alehouse or plan for an elevated
evening with French fare at Restaurant
Josephine. Each of the six rooms is
named after early local pioneers, such as
Viola Wrigley and Leland Stanford. Oldschool
mansion charm meets modern
upgrades for a unique and comfortable
stay. 195 Park Street, Auburn, 530-330-
SpringHill Suites by Marriott
Auburn: Want to be closer to the
winery action but prefer a more
classic, familiar hotel experience?
Look no further. This isn’t your typical
chain hotel, though—every room is
a spacious suite, equipped with a
separate living/seating area, a mini
fridge, and a microwave. Connecting
rooms are available upon request,
making this a nice option if you plan
to wine taste with a group. 13535
COOL CAVES
Intimate Underground Tastings
The climate of caves bodes well to regulating the
Reds’ Bistro
Reds' Bistro was opened by Karen Dresch and Russ
Townsend in the spring of 2020 and quickly developed
into one of Placer County's most celebrated restaurants.
With renowned chef Mike John at the kitchen's helm,
Jake Somers returning to his hometown to serve as GM
and sommelier, Reds' offers an unrivaled experience.
Located in the heart of Loomis, Reds' has earned a reputation
for exceptionally friendly service and delicious
food. Somers' international wine list is well curated and
anything but boring! His beer list showcases great local
craft beers, and thanks to the state of the art blended
gas draft beer system at Reds' Bistro, these beers have
never tasted better!
Reds’ strives to offer an elevated dining experience while
maintaining a casual vibe. The interior is an elegant
olsom foodies, rejoice! One of the city’s newest dining destinations, Mantra,
is certainly worth celebrating. While some may be deterred by the bold
“vegan and vegetarian” tagline, believe me when I say that meat quickly becomes an
afterthought once you savor the menu’s mouthwatering, punchy flavors.
Fueled by the success of their sister restaurant, Sanskrit, Mantra’s vast menu
features fresh, creative plates made using high-quality, healthy ingredients.
All five senses are immediately engaged when you walk through the door. The
smell of Indian spices; the soft, soothing sounds of Indian music; and the clean,
minimalistic space adorned with rich colors and eye-catching portraits truly
capture the culture, making it clear you're in for a special experience.
To drink, we ordered a classic mango lassi (a mango and yogurt shake) and a
Railway Peppers
churned bliss—a savory beverage made from
buttermilk, spices, and herbs. Both were good, but
the lassi was a clear winner in our book.
To eat, we started with chana bhatura, a puffy,
deep-fried bread served alongside chana masala
that we’ll certainly order again. It was a fun way
to kick off the meal; imagine a soccer ball-sized
puff of delicious, thinly rolled fried bread that
you tear and dip into an incredibly scrumptious
chickpea curry.
For a splash of freshness, we tried the beetroot
salad, which, to our surprise, was served warm
with a mix of chopped beets, grated coconut, and
some chile that left me sweating and questioning
my decisions in life. Be careful of the chile; it
is CRAZY hot, but the salad was still sweet and
delicious.
Soon after the feeling returned to my taste
buds, the showstopper arrived: kanjipuram
masala dosa. The dish was beautifully
presented—a thinly rolled dosa
shaped into a large funnel with
a centerpiece of dipping curry—
and something I’m still dreaming
about.
Finally, the kerala veg korma
came with our pick of two types
of bread: paneer paratha and
a piece of kerala parotta. This
creamy, slightly sweet (thanks
to coconut milk), vegetableladen
curry—filled with carrots,
cauliflower, potatoes, and peas—
was so good, but our ambitions
exceeded our appetite and we had
to take it home. Fortunately, it was
equally amazing the next day!
If, like us, you have no idea
what any of the dish names
mean, don’t fret: The service
at Mantra is as wonderful as
their food, and our waitress
was quick to recommend some
crowd-pleasers. The meal was
so memorable, in fact, that we
planned another trip with family
not even a week after.
Isn’t the dream of every
foodie to find a little-known
gem with fair prices, a pleasing
environment, and
lip-smacking
cuisine? Mantra
boasts all of
this and could
easily become
our new
go-to Indian
restaurant.
Tacos
— by BELLA NOLEN
Let’s taco bout more of
our region’s top tacos.
Below is just a small
sampling of our favorites
that’ll have you coming
back for mas.
Taqueria La Fogata
1010 Riley Street, Suite 1, I don’t know about you, but I could eat Mexican food every day. Luckily, there’s a
Folsom, 916-510-1931, place in Folsom that can make it a reality. Taqueria La Fogata has an extensive
lafogata-folsom.com menu, which means you can order something different every time you go, even
@lafogatafolsom
if it is every day. I’m a taco fan, so I couldn’t resist trying their Crispy Tacos
on my first visit. They do something I absolutely love, too; after they fry up the shell, they
sprinkle parmesan all over the outside. In my opinion, it’s the best taco addition ever. I picked
grilled chicken for my protein, but other options include shredded chicken, asada, carnitas,
chile verde, al pastor, and even lengua (tongue). Top them off with lettuce, cheese,
guacamole, and sour cream, and you’ll be muy contenta. They also serve soft tacos,
vegetarian tacos, and taco salad. Burrito lovers are in luck, too, as they have several,
with the option to make any of them “wet.” Their massive menu also includes
quesadillas, enchiladas, tortas, tostadas, soups, an entire section dedicated
to seafood, and more. Hungry for breakfast? How about huevos rancheros,
huevos con chorizo, or huevos con jamon? There’s literally something for every
craving—and for every day of the week!
Hunting
Farm-to-Bottle Breweries
by MEGAN WISKUS
While the popularity and presence of craft breweries
has rapidly risen, farm-to-bottle breweries—
establishments whose ingredients (hops, honey, herbs,
stone fruit, mandarins, and more) are grown on-site and
purposefully handcrafted into pints—is still a somewhat
hard-to-come-by concept. Fortunately, our region
is home to a handful of breweries that make some
mouthwatering ground-to-glass pours. Cheers to these
home-grown establishments!
Hillenbrand Farmhaus Brewery
Hillenbrand Farmhaus Brewery
Beautifully landscaped with lush scenery in every direction
and shaded seating areas (under misters!) overlooking a
pretty pond with a water fountain, Hillenbrand Farmhaus
is a “destination brewery”—and not your average place
to grab a pint. In addition to an acre of Cascade hops,
you’ll find a two-acre orchard with peach trees, apricot
trees, lemon trees, and fig trees—all of which are used in
Farmhaus’ award-winning brews. For an approachable,
light beer with a hint of salted lime and a crisp, clean
finish, order the Mexicali Lager. Just don’t forget to pair
it with a German Pretzel Platter (one of many hyper-local
food options available)—a fresh-baked pretzel from
Freeport Bakery garnished with grapes, cheese, salami,
olives, cashews, and almonds. Hillenbrand Farmhaus
three ponds, and lots of goats!) is mostly sustainable,
Lobster Cobb Salad
Recipe by Bennett’s Kitchen Bar Market, 1595 Eureka Road, Roseville, 916-750-5150, bennettskitchen.com
• One, 7–8-ounce lobster tail, cut the raw tail at each knuckle and then in half
• Juice of fresh lemon
• Maldon sea salt, to taste
• 8 cherry tomatoes, cut in half
• 1/2 tsp. pepper, freshly ground
• 2 tbsp. lemon vinaigrette (buy a 1/2 pint at Bennett’s)
• 1/2 Hass avocado, cubed
• 1/4 cup cooked bacon, crumbled (not too small)
• 3 cups baby lettuce leaves, washed, dried, and torn into bite-sized pieces
• 3/4 cups arugula, washed and dried
• Roughly 1/8 cup Shaft’s Bleu Vein Cheese
• 1 lemon, cut in half, to garnish
Fill a 2-quart saucepan with water until 3/4 full and bring to a boil. Add the
lobster shell, half of the lemon juice, and a pinch of salt. Return to a low boil
for 4 minutes. Remove the shell and add the raw lobster; turn off the heat and
let the lobster chunks sit in the hot water for 4 minutes. Strain and place the
lobster meat in a bowl; cover with 16 oz. of ice water for 5 minutes, and then
remove the lobster. Note: This should—and can—be done before beginning the
rest of the recipe.
Place the cooked and cold lobster chunks in a bowl with the tomatoes and toss
with the remaining lemon juice and a pinch of salt pepper. Add just enough lemon
vinaigrette to moisten (about 1 tbsp.); add the avocado, bacon, lettuce, arugula, and
cheese—adding just enough additional dressing to keep the salad lightly dressed.
Garnish with half of a lemon (seeds removed) on each plate.
Cabernet Braised Short Ribs
Submitted by Wise Villa Winery
4200 Wise Road, Lincoln, 916-543-0323, wisevillawinery.com
• 6 large beef short ribs, trimmed
of excess fat
• Salt & pepper, to taste
• 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
• 2 tbsp. olive oil
• 2 tbsp. tomato paste
• 2 qt. unsalted beef broth or
chicken broth
• Italian parsley, chopped
Marinade
• 2 celery stalks, trimmed and cut
into 1-inch pieces
• 2 medium carrots, peeled,
trimmed, and cut into 1-inch
pieces
• 1 medium leek, white and
light-green parts only, split
lengthwise, coarsely chopped
• 6 cloves garlic, peeled
• 1 bay leaf
• 4 sprigs fresh thyme, chopped
• 1 bottle cabernet sauvignon
• Whole black pepper, to taste
In a large bowl, add the short ribs
and all the marinade ingredients.
Marinate for at least 6 hours in
the fridge. Remove the meat
from the marinade and pat dry
with a towel. Strain the veggies
from the wine; reserve both for
later. Season the meat with a
generous amount of salt and
pepper. Coat each side with flour
and set aside.
Preheat the oven to 350. In a large
ovenproof pot, heat the olive oil over
medium-high. When the oil begins
smoking, carefully slip ribs into the
pot and sear until well-browned, 4-5
minutes per side. Transfer ribs to a
plate.
In the same pot, sauté the
veggies from the marinade until
lightly caramelized and browned,
approximately 5-7 minutes. Add
the wine to the pot, stirring to
deglaze. Add tomato paste and stir
to dissolve. Bring the liquid to a
boil so the alcohol from the wine
evaporates. Add broth and bring to a
boil. Add the ribs back into the pot.
Spoon the liquid over the ribs to coat
them.
Cover the pot and transfer to the
middle rack of the oven. Bake
until meat is tender enough to be
pierced easily with a fork, about
2 hours or until fall-off-the-bone
tender, opening the oven every 30
minutes and carefully skimming
the fat from surface. Garnish with
chopped parsley.
Deconstructed Caprese
Submitted by Sienna
1006 White Rock Road, Suite 200, El Dorado Hills, 916-941-9694;
1480 Eureka Road, Roseville, 916-771-4700, siennarestaurants.com
• Arugula
• 1 carrot, shaved with a vegetable
peeler
• Lemon basil vinaigrette*
• 1 heirloom tomato, cut into four pieces
• 3 crostini, toasted (sliced French bread
with oil, salt, and pepper; cook at 350
for 15 minutes)
• 1/2 ball fresh burrata
• Green garlic, marinated and roasted*
• White truffle oil
• Maldon sea salt
• Pepper, to taste
Place a few ounces of arugula into a
mixing bowl with shaved carrot. Add
dressing to your liking (a light pour is
recommended, as too much will weigh
down the arugula). Mix the salad
and set aside. Top the arugula with
tomatoes, crostini, and a chunk of
burrata; sprinkle green garlic around
the bottom of the plate. Garnish the
burrata and tomatoes with white
truffle oil and sea salt; add freshly
cracked pepper.
Lemon Basil Vinaigrette
• 1 cup olive oil
• 1/2 shallot, diced
• 2 garlic cloves
• 1/4 cup lemon juice
• 5-6 large basil leaves
• 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard
• 2 tbsp. champagne vinegar
• Salt & pepper, to taste
Add all ingredients (except olive
oil, salt, and pepper) into blender
and mix on low-medium. Once
incorporated, slowly add oil
(still on low-medium) until it’s
emulsified. Season to taste with
salt and pepper.
Roasted Green Garlic
• 3 green garlic cloves
(stalk & bulb)
• 1/4 cup olive oil
• 1 tbsp. lemon juice
• Salt & pepper, to taste
Cut off the tops of the stalk
where the flesh of the garlic
starts (about 4 inches down from
the top). Roast on a grill until a
little char has built up. Remove
immediately. Place into a mixing
bowl and cover the top with
plastic wrap (this will cause the
garlic to sweat and break down).
Once cooled, slice, mince, and
place into a small bowl. Pour in
lemon juice and olive oil, then
mix thoroughly and season with
salt and pepper to taste.
FOLSOM’S HOPE
Folsom's Hope
One thousand and 00/100
STYLE Magazine
1,000.00
Terry Carroll, publisher of STYLE Magazine; Salwa Kasabian, founder and director
of Folsom’s Hope; and Frank Visconti, chef and owner of Visconti’s Ristorante.
Folsom’s Hope has been
working alongside Folsom-
Cordova Unified School
District—and in partnership with
other community organizations—
for more than 14 years, providing
mentoring, tutoring, support, and
encouragement for at-risk youth.
Founder and director Salwa
Kasabian started creating
programming almost 15 years
ago when her own children
were attending Theodore Judah
Elementary School, and her eyes
were opened to various hardships
some of the students faced.
Since then, the organization
has grown beyond Theodore
Judah to other school sites. To
date, they’ve reached almost 900
at-risk students and families in
various capacities, including
their lunch buddy
mentoring program,
after-school STARS program, and
monthly parenting classes.
“We’re so thankful to live in
such a generous community, as we
continue growing to meet the needs
of the students and families we serve.
Moving into our 15th year of formal
programming, we’re continuing
to fundraise for our Hope Center,
which will be built adjacent to
Theodore Judah Elementary School
and house [the nonprofit’s various]
programs—ultimately providing us
with the space necessary to expand.”
For more information, including
ways you can volunteer for the
upcoming school year, visit
folsomshope.org.
In honor of
our 20th year in
business, we're donating
$1,000 each month (through
January 2024) to local
charitable organizations and
need YOU, our readers, to help
us designate the recipients. To
nominate the charity of your
choice, visit stylemg.
