as reason
for delay
in school
rebuild

ELLESMERE College has been
shocked by the Minister of
Education’s response to their
delayed rebuild.
In May, the college learned the
original $30 million upgrade had
ballooned to nearly $63 million
and would now come in a staged
project, which would not be completed
until at least 2028.
The upgrade was for two
learning hubs (35 classrooms), a
new auditorium, library and an
administration block.
Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg asked
Education Minster Jan Tinetti
in Parliament why the school’s
upgrade had been delayed.

RATEPAYERS have forked
out almost $18,000 to repaint
Springfield’s donut over the past
two-and-a-half years.
And that cost will be even
more, because another repaint is
planned for this summer.
Springfield Community
Association chair Graeme
Dawson said the problem was
an ongoing issue that needed a
better solution.
“The paint they put on it
doesn’t work, and it lasts three
months. It’s a bit sad really.”
Dawson said they want a
solution to the paint issues that
is going to last.
“It’s the council spending
ratepayers’ money.”
The donut has been repainted
four times since 2020 at a cost
of $17,864.57 and will likely be
repainted again over summer,
but this time the district council
believes it will last.
“The nature of the donut
and its construction presents
challenges for maintenance,
and we have reviewed the whole
process around painting the
donut including preparation,
epoxy and paint products, to put
together a plan for repainting
the donut this financial year,”
said district

Dawson said the donut makes
people stop in the town.
“It does attract a lot of people
stopping to take photographs.”
The original donut was only
ever designed to be up for six
weeks when it was installed
in 2007 as promotion for
The Simpsons Movie, but was
popular enough it got
a permanent spot in the
town.
However, in 2009, an arson
attack left it burnt beyond repair.
For three years a tractor tyre was
put in its place until 2012, when
it was replaced with the much
sturdier concrete version that’s
in place today.

Highland
games
a finalist
in event
awards
THE HORORATA Highland
Games is a finalist in this year’s
New Zealand Event Awards.
The Hororata Community Trust
developed the highland games in
2011 and it has been running ever
since, with the 12th games to be
held on November 11 this year.
The Scottish festival with
a uniquely Kiwi twist is a
community-led event with
over 200 volunteers helping out
annually.
“We are excited to have been
announced as a finalist in this
year’s New Zealand Event Awards,
this is the third time the games
has made the finals of these
awards,” Hororata community
trust executive officer Cindy
Driscoll said.
“The games would not have
the diverse range of activities
and entertainment without
our competitors, entertainers,
stallholders, and clans.”
The winner will be announced
on November 9.

School makes tracking
attendance easier

A NEW attendance system is
helping parents track whether
their children are showing up for
class.
This term Ellesmere College
implemented a new attendance
system where once a week
parents or caregivers receive an
email with all the classes the
student has attended or been
absent from.
Principal Ronan Bass said he’s
already received positive feedback
on the system.
“We have had lots of positive
feedback from parents. It’s one
less thing for parents to think
about, logging in to check their
child’s attendance.”
Like many schools, parents
could already check attendance
by logging into the online portal
Kamar. Bass said the new system
is designed to make it easier and
more convenient for parents to
access attendance records.
Schools have come under increasing
pressure by the Ministry
of Education to solve the national
attendance crisis.

attendance as being over 90
per cent attendance, irregular

Bass said overall the attendance
numbers at the school
are above average, despite the
disruptions caused by Covid and
recent teacher strikes. This term
the average attendance rate is
79.5 per cent.
“It has been a quite settled start
to the term . . . I’m quite pleased
by the vast majority of our students
who have quite high levels
of attendance,” he said.
The most recent Education
Counts attendance report from
term one of this year said Canterbury
had the second highest
average attendance rates at 63.2
per cent, 0.1 per cent behind
Auckland.
Elsewhere in the district,
Darfield High School sends
an attendance report every
fortnight, Rolleston College
sends a letter to parents only
when a student’s attendance
drops below 90 per cent, and
Lincoln High School sends
a monthly report to parents
that includes an attendance
percentage.

“Our buildings have been
sitting there for 40 years so
we would be well aware if the
ground is unstable or not.
“What we are aware of is that
there is excess groundwater . .
. that is one of the holdups, we
have always known the water
table in the area is really high.
“We did make the ministry
well aware of this from day one
that it could be a potential issue.”
The Selwyn Times asked Tinetti
to elaborate on her response,
but she did not provide specific
details.
“I am advised the development
at Ellesmere College – Te Kareti
o Waihora has some additional
land and infrastructure
complexities that need to be
managed,” she said.
Tinetti also pointed to rising
construction costs affecting the
project.
When the upgrades were
announced in 2019, Prime
Minister Chris Hipkins, then
the Minister of Education,
acknowledged the reasons for
Ellesmere’s rebuild.
“All but two of the school’s
buildings are temporary
relocatable classrooms and have
experienced significant wear and
tear. That’s not good enough and
we are fixing it,” Hipkins said at
the time.
Bass said since the delay
was announced in May, the
ministry has released some
funds to provide some interim
maintenance.
“Over the past five years we
haven’t been able to spend any
money on the upgrade of any
school buildings and so they have
deteriorated over that time.
“We have forced the ministry
to allow us to spend some money
on the buildings because it is
unfair for staff and students
who are currently at the school
to be working in subpar
buildings.”
Upgrades include a new coat of
paint on buildings.

Flood victims discuss solutions

POSSIBLE solutions have
been offered to a family whose
property has flooded for the past
two winters.
Anna and Josh Pedersen and
their three young children were
once again forced to moved
out of their Tancreds Rd,
Ladbrooks, property after the
heavy rainfall event at the end of
last month.
Their property, along with others
in the area, is located within
the Halswell Drainage Scheme
and is adjacent to Environment
Canterbury’s Blacklers drain.
The family met with ECan
rivers manager David Aires to
discuss their issues on Thursday,
the day after the Selwyn Times
highlighted their plight.
“It was a really good chat, very
productive, learned a bit more
again,” Josh said.
Following the meeting Josh
said he received an email from
ECan proposing a potential
solution. In the email a senior
river engineer provided some
commentary around the merits
of a floodgate.
Two locations for a floodgate
were offered, somewhere in the
downstream 300m of Blacklers
Drain, or adjacent to Perrymans
Rd. It was suggested the
floodgate be plumbed into the
road, as it is raised above general
ground level, either immediately
upstream or downstream of the
road.
The engineer said those locations
have the least risk of being
bypassed by water overtopping
general ground level elsewhere.
The engineer said effects on
the other areas are yet to be
investigated.
“A major issue with either
option is the displacement of
floodwaters and effects on others
further down the system, if
indeed a gate would be effective,”
the email said.
Josh said it remains to be seen
whether any solutions will be
implemented.
“I’m certainly more positive.
It’s probably now just a cost
question I think and the
willingness of ECan to do
something.”
Anna said it can take up to six
weeks for their 4ha property to
drain completely after flooding.
They keep some animals,
including cattle, sheep, and
pigs. When the flooding hits,
the cattle and sheep have to be
moved to the neighbours’.
In last week’s Selwyn Times,
the family blamed
ECan, which they said
was not listening to
their concerns over the
flooding.
“I feel like they
are just expecting
us to put our
heads in the
sand and go
away,” Anna
said at the
time.

heard from
other property
owners in the area
experiencing similar
issues.

Mum of Hororata crash victims
speaks of ‘devastating loss’

FOR HOURS Gina Dulay waited
for a call from her three children
to hear about their day and how
their new lives were in New
Zealand.
When the phone eventually
rang at her home in the Philippines
it was their father calling
with devastating news. Two of
their children were dead, and a
third was in critical condition
after a crash in Hororata.
Emergency services were
called to the double-fatal crash
on Rakaia Terrace Rd at 2.46pm
on Saturday.
Khatricia Dulay, 19, and Ian
Dulay, 17, died following the collision.
Their oldest sister, 22, was
critically injured, as was their
father’s partner. Their father,
Ghomer Dulay, suffered moderate
injuries.
Gina Dulay spoke from the
Philippines, with a relative helping
to translate. Behind her was a
photo of Khatricia and a candle.
“I’m the mother of the two
children dead,” she began the
conversation.
She last saw her children on
May 25 when they left the Philippines
with their father for a new
life.
“They migrate for good so they
will have a better future.
“They want to have a better
life, so they live in New Zealand.”
The decision to let them leave
was “very hard”, she said. The
children were also sad to be leaving
their mother but “excited”
for what lay ahead. Their father,
who flew to the Philippines to
pick them up, had lived in New
Zealand since 2015.
She last spoke to her children
a day before the crash. They were
“very happy” with their new
lives, and had spent some of their
day at the mall.
The children had routinely
called her since they arrived to
provide updates and would also
send her photos of their travels.
On Saturday, she was waiting
for another call, but none came.
She did not know about the
crash until their father called.
“She cannot think anything.
She’s in deep pain, she’s in
shock,” the relative said.
Gina Dulay was unable to
accept what had happened
until she could see her children
herself.
What had happened was “devastating”,
the relative said.
“She’s so very, very sad when
she heard the news and also said
that she can’t live without her
children.”
Her children were “so kind,
loveable, jolly and generous”.
A Givealittle page has been
made for the Dulay family to
help get the children home.
“Please help us bring my children
to the Philippines so that I
can see them,” Gina Dulay said.

morning had been full
of “laughing and joking” and
cooking together, enjoying each
other’s company after eight years
living apart.
About 1.30pm they left their
home in Christchurch to head to

Just over an hour after they
left home, Ghomer Dulay was
driving along Rakaia Terrace Rd
when he saw what he thought
was a rabbit running across the
road.
“That’s why I tried to brake
and now sliding the car and zigzag,”
he said.
“I lost control.”
The car crashed. He blacked
out, his next memory was waking
up at the crash scene.
“My kids, my partner were
yelling and crying. Me also.”
His car was “totally damaged”
and he called 111 and told the
operator “I need help because the
car crashed”.
He then pulled out his partner
and eldest child from the wreckage.
He was unable to get his
other two children out.

unsure what to do.
It was not until later that evening
police informed him two of
his children were dead. His oldest
child was critically injured, as
was his partner.
“It’s so sad when I got that
news, I was crying,” he said.
“I have two kids gone.”
On Sunday he said he had a
sore head and face but was physically
“OK”. Dulay is staying at
the hospital to be at his partner
and daughter’s sides.
He said he wanted to tell his
children he was “sorry” for what
happened.
“I don’t want this to happen . . .
they’re my blood,” he said.
His son was studying at the
time. His daughters and his partner
are all caregivers.
“Their dreams are nothing
now, and also my dreams to give
them a big future here.
“It’s gone.
“I want them to be happy,
that’s why all their life I just
follow them. ‘Pa, let’s go there, I
want to see the snow, Pa let’s go
there, I want to visit this’.”
His focus was to bring his
children back to the Philippines
to their mother.
The children’s aunt, Jinena
Tats-Quin Abellera, told the Herald
the family was “devastated”.
She said Dulay called one of
his siblings to inform them of the
crash, and the rest of the family
was then told.
The Givealittle page was created
by Petronila Tangal, who was
a neighbour of Dulay’s partner in
the Philippines and now lives in
Christchurch.
She had visited Dulay in the
hospital and said he was “crying
a lot”.

Bruce Sayer attended the crash.
He said the stretch of road went
from a tar road to a shingle road.
The brigade had attended about
nine crashes at the same spot,
but Saturday’s was the first fatal.
The road was mainly used by
dairy workers and farmers, he
said.
“It’s probably one of the worst I
think our brigade has attended.
“We’ve had fatals before, but
a double fatal is way out of the
norm for us in a little town like
this.”
He said it appeared the car had
lost control and hit a tree.
“It wasn’t a pleasant scene.
“The force of the vehicle striking
the tree had sort of strewn
debris from the vehicle across
quite a large area and the vehicle
was sort of still in an upsidedown
position.”
Sayer said no matter how many
crashes firefighters attended it
impacted those that responded.
“But I think from the brigade
point of view everyone realises
that if we weren’t there no one
would be, the waiting time
would be a long time before
someone came.”
He said Fire and Emergency
New Zealand had great
“wraparound support” to go
alongside the support from
within the brigade.

Ambition, sacrifice drive teen
While most 16-year-olds
were in the classroom,
Jacob Douglas was
halfway across the
world living by himself.
Now two years later
reporter Daniel Alvey
catches up with the
fast-driving teenager
JACOB DOUGLAS has had a
taste for racing since he started
competing at 8 – now he’s on the
road to the top of his sport.
“We started out just (karting)
for fun, then we moved to a
really good team and then just
flourished,” he said.
Douglas, 18, now lives in
Indianapolis, United States, but
is back in Lincoln at his parent’s
house for a break between races.
He has his sights set on racing
IndyCar, an achievable goal
considering how far he has
come since his success in New
Zealand with the WKS Kartstore
team and coach Matt Hamilton.
Douglas found himself travelling
the globe to race karts with the
team.
“I raced in Italy, Germany,
Thailand and Australia,” he said.
After switching from karts
to cars, which included racing
in Formula Ford, Douglas was
ready to make the next step in
his career.

After more success in New
Zealand, Douglas and his family
knew if he was going to progress
his career he would have to move
to either Europe or the United
States full-time to ensure he was
racing with the best.
Being in his mid-teens
and still very young to be
travelling overseas by himself,
it was decided the US route
was his best way to go. When
Douglas first moved to the US in
2020 he was on a 90-day tourist
visa, meaning he had to leave
the country every few months,

which became more tricky due
to Covid travel restrictions. So
he mostly went to the United
Kingdom then back to the US.
He then took on a number
of US championships, which
included winning five out of six
races in the YACademy Winter
Series. He is now approaching
the final round of his second
season in the USF2000
championship. This year he has
managed to get on the podium
twice – but is still chasing that
elusive win.
“It will be about piecing it all
together. The pace is definitely
there,” Douglas said.
In June, he made the decision
to leave Exclusive Autosport,
the team he had been with since
arriving in the US, for a seat
on the championship-winning
Pabst Racing team.
“The team switch really helped
us get that next little bit.”
Since the switch, he has been
on the podium once and has
managed two top-three spots in
qualifying.
“Overall as a year, we wanted
more but it’s part of the learning
process.”
Fellow New Zealander Hunter
McElrae, a former Pabst driver
who is heading for IndyCar,
helps coach Douglas.
Other than motorsport, he
keeps himself busy at the gym
and spends time in the race
simulator. He also has to fit some
online school work in between.

Darfield
High bus to
end for
West Melton
students

STUDENTS WHO live in West
Melton will not have a direct bus
to Darfield High School from next
year.
Principal Andy England said it
was always the plan to phase out
the bus service to West Melton,
along with accepting fewer out of
zone enrolments.
In 2016, West Melton was
rezoned to be in the Rolleston
College zone. At the time it was
agreed Darfield High would keep
the bus service going until the end
of this year.
England said the information
had been in student enrolment
packs, but had been omitted for
the past two years. He apologised
for the frustration this may have
caused in a letter to affected
parents.
The bus will now end its
journey at Sandy Knolls Rd, about
4km from West Melton.
England said if the school
did decide to run a bus to West
Melton, it would not get Ministry
of Education funding.
Fire station extension opens
THE DARFIELD community
joined with Fire and Emergency
New Zealand on Saturday to
celebrate the opening of its fire
station extension.
The $2.8 million extension
enables the integrated Darfield
and Darfield South Volunteer
Fire Brigades to operate from
one facility.
FENZ Canterbury district
manager David Stackhouse said
the combined brigades attended
about 120 calls a year, with an
increasing number of weatherrelated
responses. The new
extension provided Darfield’s
firefighters with the space they
needed to train for and respond
to all types of emergencies.
It enlarges the original station
built in 1958 and includes an
extra three appliance bays,
storage space, a training
room with a kitchenette, a
decontamination and ablution
facility and a sealed car park.
Stackhouse acknowledged
Darfield’s volunteer firefighters
and thanked their whānau and
employers, who supported them
in their efforts on behalf of their
community.
“When people don’t know
who else to call, they always call
the fire brigade,” he said.
FENZ acting chief executive
Russell Wood said the opening
marked the completion of 26 fire
station upgrades and rebuilds,
funded by the Government’s
Covid-19 Response and
Recovery Fund.
“Our property renewal work
programme continues, but this
government funding has allowed
Fire and Emergency to rebuild
or upgrade these fire stations
around New Zealand earlier
than anticipated,” he said.
“We are thrilled that 26
fire stations right around the
country have now received
upgraded or brand-new stations,
allowing crews the best available

A DEPARTING Scott Robertson
has opened up on his career
as Crusaders coach in his final
interview before taking on the
All Blacks role in November.
Robertson won seven Super
Rugby titles as coach and four as
a player. He takes over from Ian
Foster as All Blacks coach after
the Rugby World Cup. In a video
posted by the Crusaders, an
emotional Robertson looks back
on his time with the franchise
and how much it has meant to
him.
“To give back to a jersey that
has given me so much . . . it’s
special that I can walk away and
go ‘thanks for everything, I’m
a better man for it. And thank
you’,” he said in the video.
Robertson also got emotional
while reflecting on his final game
in Christchurch – the 52-15 semifinal
thrashing of the Blues. He
admitted being nervous about
the potential of ending his stint
with a semi-final defeat and went
onto the ground and revved up
the home crowd before the game.
“Probably that moment was
my last time at Orangetheory, at
the home ground . . . I just felt we
needed it. I just thought it was
going to be a special moment. A

Otira Tunnel and Springfield Railway
Station centenary celebrated in style
ON BOTH sides of the divide,
people came to mark the
centenary of the Otira Tunnel.
About 1000 people turned out
in Otira on Friday for a special
train trip to the tunnel, guided
walks and speeches.
Many were descendants
of the tunnellers who toiled
underground for 15 years in often
wet or freezing conditions to
create the first real link between
Canterbury and the West Coast.
The 8.5km tunnel opened on
August 4, 1923, and was at the
time the longest in the British
Empire and New Zealand’s largest
engineering project.
In Springfield on Saturday,
the township commemorated
not only the tunnel but also the
Springfield Railway Station.
It is 100 years since the railway
moved from the centre of the
village to its present site so a larger
depot could be built, coinciding
with the opening of the tunnel.
The station is mostly closed now
but with KiwiRail’s blessing, it
was reopened for the day.

Prebbleton’s road to
the top of club rugby
Prebbleton’s Coleman
Shield win was the icing
on the cake in a season
which saw three of the
club’s other teams claim

WHEN SIMON Fitzgerald
took up the director of rugby
role at Prebbleton in September
last year, he didn’t expect to be
coaching the club’s top side too.
But the supportive environment
at Prebbleton made him
want to coach again and, 10
months on, he capped off his first
season with the club by leading
the division 1 team to their first
Coleman Shield win since 1974,
beating Waihora 37-3 in the
final.
“But it was
the team all
delivering at a
high level which
allowed me to
scope and manage
this team,”

he said.
He has previously
coached
overseas in
Canada, the United Kingdom
and Netherlands.
“At other (club) teams, I was
doing everything. Honestly, it
has made me continue to want to
coach again.”
Club president Jeromy
Knowler said they always intended
for Fitzgerald to lead the
division 1 side, despite his initial
reluctance.
“We always wanted to have
him as a coach, and he eventually
agreed after a month or two,
and saw he would be the best
option.”
Knowler said their training
runs had been a “switch-up” to
previous years under Fitzgerald’s
expertise.
“He’s bought a lot of change
within the senior group,” he said.

“The big thing is that he’s
brought professionalism.
“Video analysis is really broken
down for the players and the
trainings are really specific.”
Prebbleton’s division 1, 2 and
colts sides often trained together
this season, which ultimately
paid off for all teams.
The colts triumphed over
Waihora to take out the Ellesmere
title, while the division 2
side narrowly missed out on the
final after winning nine of their
10 round robin games.
Prebbleton life member and
former division 1 head coach
Derek Todd first introduced the
combined trainings.
Knowler said the decision was
“kind of ruthless at the time” as
players who didn’t necessarily
want to play in the top grade
were training together.
This season the teams also had
shared themes throughout the
year and met for Thursday dinners,
which Fitzgerald said “gave
a good sense of belonging”.
Prebbleton’s women’s team
have had a successful year too,
winning the Metro premier
reserve final against High
School Old Boys before beating
Springston in the Ellesmere final.
Their success trickled down to
the junior ranks too, with new
Canterbury women’s coach Jimmy
Sinclair hosting workshops
for up-and-coming coaches.
Said Fitzgerald: “In amateur
rugby, it’s about increasing participation
and not losing sight of
what we’re here for.”

for the division 1 side this year,
which Fitzgerald said will be
integral for the club’s future.
“People said I was handing out
(debut) ties like confetti.
“They’ve had a taste of success
as well this year, which is really
positive.”
Colts players had the opportunity
to feature in higher
grades largely due to Prebbleton’s
combined senior trainings.
“The players really enjoyed
training as a bigger group and
everyone felt like that had an
equal opportunity,” Fitzgerald
said.
Knowler said their success had
been bubbling away for the last
few years, with Prebbleton being
beaten in both the 2021 and 2022
Coleman Shield finals.
“I’m really proud of the last
three years, we’ve been really
competitive and showing signs of
promise,” he said.
“I remember about 10 years
ago, we had no senior teams in
semi-finals.
“But this year, as the season
went on, we saw the depth. And
to win the Coleman Shield was
pretty emotional.”
Fitzgerald said drawing in new
young players is important for
the future of the club.
“We’ve all got a shared vision
on making it a welcoming place,”
he said.
“We’re not going to just focus
on winning more titles, we need
to remember what we’re about.”

Lincoln hires new development officer

growing Lincoln’s huge player
potential.
Those are two of the key
planks Lincoln rugby’s new
development officer Grant
Dearns’ aims to implement
at the club when he starts in
November.
Lincoln are the fourth club
in Ellesmere to employ a rugby
development officer, joining
Prebbleton, Southbridge and
West Melton.
Dearns’ main tasks will
surround the retention and
recruitment of players and
coaches. Lincoln were forced
to merge their division 1 side
with Rolleston
this season after
failing to field
an independent
team.
But Dearns is
excited by the
Grant
challenge and has
plenty of ideas to
put into practice.
Dearns
“It will be about putting some
processes in place when I start,”
he said.
“Recruiting kids from inside
and outside Christchurch is the
goal, as a lot of kids come down
to Canterbury and Lincoln
Universities.”
Dearns, currently the rugby
development officer of Pōneke
in Wellington, said a large
motivation to move was to be
closer to his wife, Tanya, a
former Silver Fern who is Mid
Canterbury Rugby Union chief
executive.
Although Dearns knows a
“little bit” about Ellesmere rugby,
he will be focused on using his
connections around Canterbury
to make Lincoln an appealing
destination for new players and
coaches.
“I’m really impressed with
what I’ve seen at Lincoln, it’s all
about the people,” he said.
“The junior club is hellishly
strong, there’s so many kids
playing there.
“And my job will be to make
sure there is a good stream of
players continually coming
through.”
Former Lincoln-Rolleston
Combined coach Bevan Sisson
said at this stage he does not plan
to coach Lincoln next season.
Dearns said he would also not
be coaching a team next season
either.
With experience in strength
and conditioning in the
professional game, Dearns aims
to introduce high-performance
pathways for both players and
coaches.
“I’m a bit of a one-trick-pony,
but clubs need to give an insight
into high-performance,” Dearns
said.
“At Pōneke, I’ve introduced
GPS, video analysis and stats.
That stuff is really important,
and it just exposes coaches and
players to it.
“A big thing for me is to show
a pathway for players, whatever
that may be.”

Selwyn Awards celebrate local heroes
This year’s Selwyn Awards was bigger and better than ever, with a record
number of nominees and attendees enjoying Saturday night’s Gala Dinner.
A crowd of more than 620 people celebrated the event at the Selwyn Sports
Centre, where the ceremony was hosted by popular television personality and
newsreader Hilary Barry. A range of delicious food and beverages sourced from
local suppliers was served, while guests were entertained on arrival by an aerial
artist and music during the evening from The Relatives.
Gold, silver and bronze awards were presented along with overall category
winners for each of the 10 categories, as well as the People’s Choice award.
This year, 148 nominations were received across all categories, and more than
8000 votes were cast for the People’s Choice Award, which was won by Tock.
earth Limited.
Mayor Sam Broughton says the night was a fantastic way to support the people
and organisations throughout the district who generously give their time and
expertise to make Selwyn a great place to live and do business.
“We have so many incredible people living in our district and the Selwyn Awards
acknowledges their efforts and innovation. There was a huge amount of diversity
and creativity among the nominees this year and their respective causes or

CultureFest set to serve up a fun
family day out
Experiencing delicious food and incredible entertainment from around the
world is on the cards at this year’s Selwyn CultureFest.
Held annually, the event will be hosted at Lincoln Domain on Sunday 10
September from 10am to 2pm. It is a family-friendly event celebrating the
district's diversity with interactive activities, cultural performances, ethnic
food and more.
Stallholders Jason and Stephanie Simmonds are looking forward to sharing
their delicious South Korean snack food Domi Manjoo — a fish shaped,
custard filled waffle.
“We participated in last year's CultureFest and enjoyed every minute of the

Mayor Sam leading for Selwyn on
national stage
Mayor Sam Broughton has been elected President of Local Government New
Zealand (LGNZ).
LGNZ is the organisation that represents the 75 member councils across New
Zealand to build up New Zealand’s wellbeing, as well as coordinating work
to promote healthy and thriving communities. Mayor Sam was elected to the
three-year role at the LGNZ Annual General Meeting in Christchurch.
Mayor Sam said, “I’m delighted and humbled to have been elected to lead
LGNZ; it’s a fantastic opportunity to make a difference for communities
across our Aotearoa”.
Reflecting on what this means for Selwyn, Sam remains committed as
Mayor of Selwyn and was keen to say how the strength of our District and
the reputation it has gained has contributed to his appointment. “This is an
opportunity for me to continue to advocate for Selwyn and to share so much
of our story, which has placed our District as one of the leading councils in
the Country”.
Sam takes up the reins of LGNZ at a critical time with an election on the near
horizon and the responsibility of leading the Local Government response to
the recently published report on the Future of Local Government.
“This is going to be a tough job, there is such a wide range of views across
Local Government, and no one size fits all. However, the Future for Local
Government Report is a solid start, and it’s my job to help find common
ground and work with all councils and central government to try and bring
about the changes that are required to allow our councils to serve the need of

Following the recent flooding the Council is progressing repairs to the roads and council-maintained
drainage systems across the network.
We would also like to remind residents to please inspect and carry out any required maintenance to any
privately owned waterways and drains within and adjacent to their properties.
All property owners who have a watercourse running through or adjacent to their property are reminded
they are responsible for the maintenance of these watercourses, including ensuring there are no
obstructions which could affect the flow of water. Please remember, a blocked drain doesn't just affect
you but can impact your neighbours too.
The best ways to protect your property and other is to ensure:
• removal of vegetation and fencing within waterways that can hold up water will help to keep water
moving through our networks
• that all driveway culverts are clear
• grass and vegetated fence lines are maintained at the edge of banks
• all trimmings are removed from the area after maintenance so they cannot fall into the waterways
and block up

International kai meets Kiwi celebrations
The fruits of the district, met the flavours of the world as Selwyn residents celebrated Matariki with
food and gathering.
A group of 35 Selwyn locals shared kai at the Matariki
Dinners of Selwyn in July, bringing together foods from
around the world following the Matariki theme of Tupuārangi
and food from the forests, trees and birds.
Representatives from Canterbury Community Gardens and
the three Selwyn Community gardens, Rolleston, Kirwee
and Lincoln spoke and gave an invitation to join in with local
community gardens across the district.
Lincoln local Surinder Tandon from the Christchurch
Mulitcultural Council also shared the multicultural alignment with Matariki and the international
recognition of our stars that are very important to our newcomer communities.

ROLLESTON College’s senior A
netball side is looking to continue
their dream run today, when
they meet Papanui High for their
SuperNet Reserve semi-final.
Despite going down 32-26 to
Avonside Girls’ High last week,
Rolleston remained top of their
section of the grade after being
promoted to SuperNet Reserve at
the end of last term.
It’s the first time Rolleston has
qualified for the grade and if they
win today’s semi-final, there will
be the chance to be promoted to
SuperNet next year.
The top three teams of the reserve
grade typically play a series
of qualifying games against the
bottom three SuperNet teams at
the start of the season to determine
grading.
As a result, Rolleston’s chances
to qualify for Canterbury’s top
school netball competition will
largely rely on today’s match.
The young team, who are predominantly
year 11 and 12, will
be looking to regain last month’s
momentum when they beat Rangi
Ruru and Middleton Grange.

Rolleston on verge of fourth title

ROLLESTON College failed to
field under-14.5 and under-16
rugby sides last season. But this
year they are on the verge of
sweeping all before them.
The under-14.5 side have the
chance to win their second title
on Saturday when they take on
Mid Canterbury at home in the
combined final. It comes after
they overcame Lincoln 23-13 in
the semi-final at the weekend
and won the Ellesmere title last
month. The under-16s have
already claimed both titles this
season.
It has been a steady rise for
the school which was founded
in 2017. After working with
the Ellesmere sub-union and
Canterbury Rugby, they were
allowed to play in the under-14.5
and under-16 grades last season,
but did not have enough players
to field teams.
Deputy principal and teacher
in charge of rugby, Alby Wilson,
said the players have a strong
desire to play for their school.
“We have been fortunate
enough to bring in experienced
coach Reece Allan and manager
Donna Creighton (to) develop
a programme that has seen
growth, development and mana
in the rugby played.
“They brought in coaches
and parents who also had the
same passion to see college

Many of the school’s coaches
and players have come from
the Rolleston Rugby Club.
The school also has a strong
relationship with the West
Melton club.
“The goal is growth of
rugby in our region but also
to give players options and a
chance to represent their school
and play with their mates,”
Wilson said.
“We will continue to work
with both clubs, and Ellesmere
Rugby Sub Union, to strengthen
our relationship. We know there
tends to be a drop off from
under-13 and 15 for boys’ rugby,
and we would love to focus on
that space and grow it.”
Rolleston College also
wants to grow the women’s
game. The school fields a
combined team with Lincoln
High and Darfield High in the
Miles Toyota Cup.
Said Wilson: “With the
women’s game growing and
two senior women’s teams in
our region (Prebbleton and
Springston), it’s a pathway we
want to support and grow.”
He said it is “no secret” the
school hopes to field their own
first XV in the Miles Toyota
Championship in the near
future. But currently their senior
players combine with students
from Lincoln High, Ellesmere
College and Darfield High in the
Selwyn Schools’ Combined side.
Wilson said he was “happy”
with the current arrangement
and “that players in our region
have an opportunity to play at
that level”.
But he said: “A first XV
offers a pathway to programmes
like Junior Crusaders, New
Zealand Secondary Schools,
and, for some, that needs to be
an option. For others, it will be
great to see them back in their
club colours once they leave
school, developing the colts
competition.”

AN IN-FORM Lincoln High girls’
first XI are set to meet Avonside
Girls’ High in the quarter-final at
Foster Park at 4.40pm today.
The team finished third in
the round robin stage after a 2-0
loss to unbeaten St Andrew’s
College.
It was Lincoln’s second defeat
this season – and the first since
they were beaten 4-2 by Papanui
High in May.
Lincoln last played Avonside on
May 31, when they managed to
hold on to a narrow 3-2 win.
Meanwhile, a semi-final berth
is out of reach for Lincoln’s boys’
side, despite their 5-0 win over
Burnside High last week.
Lincoln face Christ’s College in
their final round robin clash at
United Sports Centre at 6.05pm
today. The two sides last met in
May, when Christ’s won 2-0.
Lincoln (six points) could
knock Christ’s (11) out of the
playoffs with a win, depending on
the other results.

After a two-week lead-in period, we will provide you with mānuka honey
or a honey-like product to eat before breakfast and dinner every day for
six-weeks. Two weeks later we will again ask you about your functional
dyspepsia symptoms.
The time commitment for this study will be about 10 hours and you will
attend six clinic visits in total. You will receive up to $220 in supermarket
vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs associated with
participating in this study (e.g., parking and/or travel costs).

A drive through Rolleston’s Izone,
IPort, The Tawhiri development or
nearby industrial and commercial areas
shows businesses’ continued interest and
development, primarily in manufacturing,
contracting, warehousing and logistics,
and agricultural services. While some
blocks of industrial land are still on the
market, several real estate companies
advise that industrial land in Rolleston is
nearly sold out, with no new land supply
becoming available soon.
Currently, some major companies
that call Rolleston home include The
Warehouse’s South Island distribution
centre, along with PGG Wrightson,
ProBuild ITM, Westland Milk, Pegasus
Engineering, Coolpak, MOVE Logistics
and the Metroport Christchurch freight
hub. Meanwhile, the construction of
Rolleston Placemakers on Hoskyns
Road is well underway, with cladding
on the exterior and progress being
made towards an opening later this year.
Woolworths (previously Countdown)
is now advertising positions for their
new distribution centre in the Tawhiri
development, due to be operational
in 2024. There has been no further
information about the Carter Group’s
new proposed bulk-retail development,
“The Station”, or the possible opening of
a Costco or Ikea store in Rolleston. It has
recently been confirmed that a Mitre 10
store will be constructed on Pak’nSave’s
subdivided Levi Road land. Another
retail business, the Chemist Warehouse,
recently opened on Rolleston Drive.
Not all industrial and commercial sites
are being utilised by big businesses, with
a greater number of smaller specialised
services now coming on board and using
purpose-built facilities. New warehouse
units at Factory Drive have a range
of tenants, including Wrap Doctor,
Ammo Direct, Shampoodle, Workers
Pantry, Deluxe Beds Direct, Absolute
Waterproofing, MR Stainless Fabrications,
and Hi-Tech Auto Electrical. While only
three units are left to be tenanted, due to
the demand, another block of 16 units is
proposed to be completed by the end of
2023.
As Rolleston expands, the variety and
number of commercial and industrial
businesses deciding to be based in
Rolleston also increases. Companies
recognise the value of securing soughtafter
high-quality industrial land or
obtaining leases on properties, with
nearby Southern Motorway/SH1
providing easy access to and from the
city. The availability and diverse range of
small and large businesses offer Selwyn
residents the benefits of local options,
reducing the need to travel into the city
centre or other suburbs and providing

Market Overview
Lincoln is still popular for those
wanting a quieter lifestyle but still close
enough to enjoy what the city offers.

Lincoln, who works closely with clients
and builds relationships, confirms
Lincoln is about “wanting a communitybased
lifestyle and knowing the people
who live around you.” Although not as
strong as previously, Lincoln still shows a
strong market where people sell for more
than they bought.
Jolene confirms there has been a
pickup in buyers, and recent open homes
have been busy, with more properties
coming onto the market and greater
interest from buyers. Several buyers
have been cash buyers-both locals and
from the North Island, and some had
previously been renting and are now
ready for their own home. There has
been a range of properties for sale, giving
people options, with lower-priced houses
giving first-home buyers a chance to
purchase and more expensive luxury
properties available for purchase.
House prices have reduced from
previous times. However, Jolene
suggests, “Keep this in perspective as we
forget that we had such a quick growth
in the property market, and it has come
down slightly from that.” The June sales
median is $870,000, which reflects the
sale of some cheaper and more expensive
homes. Demand has been a mixture of 3-
and 4-bedroom properties for growing
families and downsizers, especially from
lifestyle properties. Buyers are looking
for a 4th bedroom or home office for
those working from home, and having a
third garage spot is in demand.
Currently, houses are on the market for
43-45 days. Jolene states, “This appears
to be driven by the fact we are seeing
more deadline sales at the moment
rather than auctions.” Whereas auctions
usually have a three-week campaign
before selling, conditional selling is
likely to be five weeks, allowing time for
buyers to do their due diligence. Jolene
confirms, “Buyers are now wanting to
have conversations, and they need time
to get themselves organised to speak to
the banks. It’s not the rush to buy with
the FOMO (Fear of missing out) like it
used to be.” She also suggested buyers
are more prepared, getting pre-approval
and knowing which properties they can
afford.
Jolene advises that after receiving
a market appraisal, sellers will have a
good idea of where their property sits
on the property market and what’s been
happening around them, ensuring they
have a realistic price expectation. As part
of their service and going the extra mile
in helping to stage the home, “it puts the
house on a pedestal, to really shine and
look its best”, buyers will be able to see
themselves living there.
Meanwhile, investors coming through
open homes are scarce, and more
investment properties are being sold than
bought.

subtropical regions of South
America, Azara is a genus of 11
evergreen species.
They grow as shrubs or trees
between 1m and 8m tall.
The leaves appear in an unusual
pattern along the stems, which
is an interesting characteristic of
this genus.
Pairs of differently shaped
leaves are arranged alternately
along the stems though the
smaller leaf of the pair is not a
true leaf but a leaf-like stipule.
In late winter or early spring
an abundance of dainty yellow
flowers appears. The small

of the Azara species is the sweetscented

this species’ small leaves.
Azaramicrophylla “Variegata”,

Nissan’s Qashqai a strong performer

THE QASHQAI compact
urban SUV, with its inventive
fuel-saving low-emission hybrid
technology, is a breakthrough
model for Nissan in this part of
the world.
A new platform underpins this
latest Qashqai, with increased
torsional stiffness provided by
greater use of high-strength steel.
Despite an increase in stiffness,
the body shell is a remarkable
60kg lighter than before.
In Europe and the UK, they
love the Qashqai. On this side of
the world it is, at best, a steady
seller. The company is expecting
big things from this latest model,
which offers a step up in refinement,
safety and technology
– and unfortunately prices, compared
to the vehicle it replaces.
Affordability could be an issue
with the entry level ST kicking
off at $45,990, $8k more than the
outgoing model. There no hiding
the fact this is a big increase
over the previous version, even
allowing for major advances on
every front. You do get more
Qashqai for your dollar with
this latest iteration bigger across
the board. It’s 4425mm long
(+31mm), 1625mm tall (+30mm),
and 1835mm wide (+29mm),
while the wheelbase has grown to
2665mm (+19mm).
There’s plenty of technology,
leading edge safety features, and
a more sophisticated multi-link
rear suspension set-up across
every model. There’s also more
variety in the powertrain department,
with a new and feisty
1.3-litre turbo petrol, and the
option of Nissan’s innovative
e-POWER hybrid system. This
carries a $7k price premium over
the turbo petrol motor.
Petrol, not e-power, dominates
the six strong model range,
which comprises four petrol variants
starting with the price leading
$45,995 ST and stretching to
$56,990 for the flagship Ti-L.
E-power is limited to the
upmarket Ti and Ti-L priced at
$59,990 and $65,680 respectively.
The latter version of this duo
was supplied for this road test.
These hefty asking prices put
the Qashqai at the high end of
its class. In fact, you can buy its
larger sibling the X-Trail e-power
in the same upmarket spec for
another $1200. For that modest
investment, you get a larger
vehicle, greater versatility and the
better re-sale of an AWD SUV.
Most hybrid systems use
an electric motor and a petrol
engine to drive their wheels. Nissan’s
e-POWER does things differently
with its wheels powered

similar in size and power output
to those fitted in pure Nissan’s
EVs. It’s a strong high-energy
performer with 140kw of power
and 330nm of torque to take
command of most driving scenarios.
Thanks to the pure electric
motor, there’s none of the powerdelivery
hesitancy associated
with an internal combustion engine
or traditional hybrid set-ups.
The instant response provides a
high-torque feel and exhilarating
acceleration, on lower fuel use
and emissions.
The e-POWER system delivers
its torque almost instantly,
enhancing the vehicle’s responsiveness.
A new-generation CVT
(Constant Variable Transmission)
delivers better fuel economy
and produces a lot less friction.
There are three drive modes at
your disposal, Eco, Normal and
Sport. All these upgrades are big
improvements on the lethargic
CVT that blunted the performance
of the previous model.
For a compact urban SUV
this one is roomier than most,
with plenty of passenger and
load space. The Ti-L supplied
for this road test is the jewel in
the Qashqai crown and sparkles
when it comes luxury features.
There’s a panoramic glass
roof and electric sunshade, a
black headliner and ambient
interior lighting. Cabin technology
features a 10.8-inch colour
head-up display, and a premium
10-speaker BOSE audio system.
The seats are accented in plush by
rather dated looking 3D quilted
premium leather, with memory
and massage functions for frontseat
passenger and driver.
A motion activated tailgate is
great if you’re juggling an armful
of groceries in the supermarket
car park. Simply wave your hand
or foot at the tailgate and the rear
hatch opens like magic.

A lot of hype surrounds the
new Qashqai’s advanced multilink
rear suspension. This configuration
means it excels when
subjected to sudden direction
changes, or different road cambers.
Well-controlled body-roll,
comfort and the effective isolation
of road noise and vibrations
from the passenger compartment
are among the best in the compact
urban SUV class.
There been a rework of the
steering with revised ratios
offering quicker corner turn-in
response. I’m not sure this rejig
hits all its KPIs. Overall, it puts in
a solid effort. However, at times
the steering felt light and a bit
thin on road feel and is an area
that isn’t as accomplished as the
rest of the vehicle.
