End of the road for 

historic Mitre Hotel 

Demolition work has started at the Mitre Hotel on Norwich Quay in Lyttelton. A 

crew was on site yesterday to help bring down the 80-year-old portside building. 

The hotel has been unusable since the earthquakes, when fences and a hefty barrier 

were erected to separate it from the road. EQC and a private insurer had previously

The city council’s draft outdoor 

dining policy set out how businesses 

should provide outdoor 

dining in public places, including 

footpaths and parks. 

It aims to support smoke-free 

and vape-free dining and improve 

accessibility. 

City council transport operations 

manager Stephen Wright 

said the current policy was “no 

longer fit for purpose”.

Tunnel centenary celebrated in style 

ON BOTH sides of the divide, 

people came to mark the 

centenary of the Otira Tunnel. 

About 1000 people turned out 

in Otira on Friday for a special 

train trip to the tunnel, guided 

walks and speeches. 

Many were descendants 

of the tunnellers who toiled 

underground for 15 years in 

often wet or freezing conditions 

to create the first real link 

between Canterbury and the 

West Coast. 

The 8.5km tunnel opened on 

August 4, 1923, and was at the 

time the longest in the British 

Empire and New Zealand’s 

largest engineering project. 

KiwiRail chief executive Peter 

Reidy told RNZ the Otira Tunnel 

was a testament to the hard work 

of staff. 

“The tunnel remains a vital 

link on the Midland Line and a 

gateway to the West Coast. Each 

week, around 70 trains travel 

through the tunnel, carrying 

freight for our customers and 

visitors on TranzAlpine,” Reidy 

said. 

“KiwiRail connects West 

Coast producers with Lyttelton 

Port and overseas markets and 

provides a sustainable transport 

solution for the region’s supply 

chain.” 

In Springfield on Saturday, 

the township commemorated 

not only the tunnel but also 

the Springfield Railway 

Station. 

It is 100 years since the railway 

moved from the centre of the 

village to its present site so a 

larger depot could be built, 

coinciding with the opening of 

the tunnel. 

The station is mostly closed 

now but with KiwiRail’s blessing, 

it was reopened for the day.

AN AMBITIOUS plan to build 

and install a sculpture conceived 

by internationally renowned 

New Zealand artist Len Lye at 

Scott Park in Ferrymead is now 

being reviewed. 

The artwork named Grass, 

which was to be placed east of 

the Ferrymead Bridge, is now 

considered too big and not what 

was originally planned. 

It will represent long beach 

grass swaying in the wind – and 

be the length of two large cars. 

It was first conceived by the 

experimental filmmaker and 

sculptor more than 60 years ago, 

but he died in New York in 1980 

before his vision for the work 

could be realised. 

A city council concept plan 

for the area from 2018 shows a 

site for a small artwork at the 

eastern end of the bridge. But the 

Christchurch Coastal Pathway 

Group, supported by the Len Lye 

Foundation, now wants the 3.5m 

high kinetic artwork to go where 

a public toilet block is currently 

located at Scott Park. 

The pathway group is standing 

firm on the idea, but Waihoro 

Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote 

Community Board chair Callum 

Ward said this is not what was 

originally proposed so the board 

has asked city council staff to 

look at other options. 

Grass is being constructed by 

four mechanical engineering 

students in their final year at 

Canterbury University using 

materials that were not available 

to the artist in the 1960s.

part because Lye was born in 

Christchurch and lived in the Mt 

Pleasant area for a time. 

Wind and kite surfers have 

objected because the park is a 

preparation and launching area 

for water sports enthusiasts who 

are worried about the space it 

will take up. 

Pacific Fleet Windsurfing 

spokesperson Miranda Hill 

questioned the impact on car 

parking and access to the area for 

trailers, boards and equipment. 

The yacht club also decided 

last week it wanted more 

consultation with park users 

before it would support the plan. 

Said Mt Pleasant Yacht Club 

Commodore Brad Henderson: 

“We rig our boats on part of that 

park and (the) sculpture will 

restrict the area we can use. 

“We like the concept but just 

want to make sure the interests 

of all park users are taken into 

account,” he said. 

The coastal pathway group, 

which is co-sponsoring the work, 

has suggested the concept plan 

for the park might be reviewed. 

Group chair Hanno Sander 

said he wanted the sculpture in 

Scott Park and believes it can be 

placed there without impacting 

existing activities. 

“But a lot of people use that 

park and we want to make sure 

all the interested groups are on 

board and we are not treading on 

anyone’s toes. 

“Nothing has been 

formalised, even the design has 

not been finalised, and even if it 

is finished by the end of the year 

as planned, that doesn’t mean it 

has to be installed immediately,” 

he said.

and to remove ashtrays or other 

receptacles for smoking or vaping 

litter. 

• An accessible pathway must be 

provided alongside outdoor dining 

areas on the footpath, consistent 

with Waka Kotahi guidance. 

• Licensees must be attained to 

manage all waste and litter associated 

with their outdoor dining 

activity. 

• And a defined term for licences 

(of up to three years) rather 

than the current open-ended 

term. 

The policy only applies to 

outdoor dining activities that take 

place on open public space like 

roads, footpaths, and parks.

Aerospace team rockets to success in US 

A TEAM OF students are 

coming back to earth after 

building and launching a 

winning rocket 10km into the 

sky at an international aerospace 

competition. 

The Canterbury University 

team won their category and 

placed third overall at the recent 

Spaceport America Cup in New 

Mexico in the United States. 

The event is the world’s largest 

student rocket engineering conference 

and competition, with 

158 teams taking part this year 

from 24 countries. 

The 10 students who took part 

are members of UC Aerospace, 

a student-led club sponsored by 

UC’s Mechanical Engineering 

department. They were the only 

team from New Zealand competing 

and to win their category 

they had to design, build and 

launch a rocket that reached as 

close as possible to the target of 

30,000 feet (about 10km). 

Team leader Alicia Smith said 

they went into the competition 

aiming to win and were thrilled 

with the result. 

“We’ve put UC on the international 

stage as a highly 

competitive rocket engineering 

team, and we’re looking forward 

to what the club achieves next. 

“We worked incredibly hard 

for six months building the rocket, 

testing all the subsystems, and

doing test launches to validate 

everything. It was awesome to

“Winning our category and 

coming third overall is definitely 

a big accomplishment that we’re 

pretty proud of,” said Smith. 

Smith, who works at Dawn 

Aerospace part-time, will finish 

a Bachelor of Engineering with 

Honours in Mechanical Engineering, 

with a minor in Aerospace 

Engineering, at the end of 

the year. She has already lined up 

a full-time job at Rocket Lab in 

Auckland starting next year. 

“I think being in the UC Aerospace 

club which I joined in my 

second year and was president 

of last year and doing this work 

designing and building rockets, 

is what’s really helped me in my 

job interviews and set me apart,” 

she said. 

“What draws me to working 

in aerospace is wanting to know 

what’s out there and how we can 

benefit humanity with what we 

do and discover in space.” 

The UC Aerospace team 

included Smith, Avalon Beker, 

Henry Eden-Mann, Reuben 

Van Dorp, Jacob Saunders, Jack 

Davies, Pieter Leigh, James 

Graham, Caleb Melchers and 

Peter Lee. 

Lee, the UC Aerospace president, 

said it was a huge honour 

for the team to represent New 

Zealand in this year’s event. 

“Our involvement shows the 

aerospace capabilities of both 

UC and the country on the world 

stage.” 

The competition began well 

ahead of the event because every 

team had to provide milestones, 

technical reports, and safety 

reviews prior to launch, he 

said. The students designed and 

built all aspects of the rocket 

within the tight deadlines of the 

competition and on top of their 

academic course work. 

In February last year, UC 

Aerospace students launched 

a rocket at Birdlings Flat in an 

attempt to exceed the altitude 

record for a student-led rocket 

programme. Unfortunately, lost 

data meant the students could 

not confirm if they had exceeded 

the record. Safety measures were 

in place, after a botched launch 

in 2019.

A DRAFT naming policy 

designed to provide more 

guidance around the naming 

of roads, parks and facilities 

on Banks Peninsula is open for 

feedback. 

The policy aims to 

incorporate the importance of 

mana whenua, the environment 

and cultural heritage when it 

comes to naming the areas. 

City council head of strategic 

policy and resilience David 

Griffiths said the new policy 

will replace the Roads and 

Rights-of-way Naming Policy 

and the Naming of Reserves 

and Facilities Policy. 

“These old policies don’t reflect 

the significant changes that 

has taken place over the past 30 

years or provide good guidance 

for the community or staff on 

naming,” Griffiths said. 

“Our community boards, who 

make most of the decisions on 

names for roads, green spaces 

and facilities, have asked for 

improved guidance on naming 

and greater diversity in the 

names presented to them for 

consideration.”

Den Pitch. They scored 96 points 

with their business, Decalify Designs, 

which won the Canterbury 

section of the competition.

We are looking for people with functional dyspepsia (indigestion) to 

participate in a research study investigating the digestive health effects 

of consuming mānuka honey. 

Symptoms of functional dyspepsia include: 

• pain or burning in the stomach, bloating, excessive belching (burping) 

or nausea after meals 

• an early feeling of fullness when eating 

• pain in the stomach that may sometimes occur unrelated to meals or 

may be relieved by eating. 

After a two-week lead-in period, we will provide you with mānuka honey 

or a honey-like product to eat before breakfast and dinner every day for 

six-weeks. Two weeks later we will again ask you about your functional 

dyspepsia symptoms. 

The time commitment for this study will be about 10 hours and you will 

attend six clinic visits in total. You will receive up to $220 in supermarket 

vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs associated with 

participating in this study (e.g., parking and/or travel costs).

18 to 70 years we would love to hear from you.

The venerable order of Hato Hone 

THE LATE 19th century posed 

considerable challenges for the 

British Colony of New Zealand 

in terms of basic healthcare and 

especially emergency care for its 

volunteer militias and military 

forces. 

In response to a request from 

the Lyttelton Naval Artillery 

Volunteers in September 1883, 

Drs Hacon and Robinson from 

Ōtautahi Christchurch, in collaboration 

with Dr Tweed from 

Ōhinehou Lyttelton, presented 

their first lecture on ambulance 

drill kits in the Lyttelton drill 

hall. 

The instruction was well 

received by the Lyttelton Navals, 

who paraded with officially sanctioned 

Geneva crosses and requisite 

medical equipment such as 

stretchers, bandages, and splints. 

The Lyttelton Navals would go 

on to distinguish themselves in 

future military parades with respect 

to their well-equipped and 

staffed ‘ambulance wagon’. 

Dr Walter Hacon, a distinguished 

honorary member of 

the United Kingdom’s St John 

Ambulance Association, had a 

seminal role in pioneering ambulance 

work in New Zealand, 

having instructed the North 

Island’s Armed Constabulary as 

early as 1881.

muscle and bone health, and low milk intake is often associated with 

poor nutrition in older adults. 

We are looking for female volunteers aged 60 to 80 years to participate 

in the YUMMI study, a 12-week research study investigating the health 

effects of consuming different types milk – cow, goat, or sheep. 

We will provide you with cow, goat or sheep milk powder to drink 

twice a day for 12-weeks, or you will be asked to eat your normal diet 

(control group). The time commitment for the study will be about 11 

hours and you will attend five clinic visits. You will receive up to $220 in

A key part of St John’s services 

revolved around the development 

of patient transport. The 

association’s first purpose-built 

ambulance vehicle, the Ashford 

litter, was developed in the UK 

and introduced to New Zealand 

in January 1886. 

A light two-wheeled handdrawn 

cart, the Ashford litter 

revolutionised patient transport, 

enabling easy manoeuvrability 

and conversion into a hand litter. 

This conveyance would later be 

complemented by purpose-built, 

horse-drawn ambulances for the 

St John Ambulance Brigades that 

formed around the country in 

the 1890s and early 1900s, with 

the Christchurch branch receiving 

theirs in February 1895. 

The 1918 influenza pandemic 

would accelerate the use of 

motorised ambulance transports 

of many makes and models, 

with the last horse-drawn 

ambulances being replaced by 

motorised ambulances in the 

early 1920s. By the late 1940s, 

New Zealand ambulance design 

was being modernised with Te 

Waipounamu South Island-built 

Mercury ambulances in wide 

use from Auckland to Dunedin, 

including Lyttelton’s own No. 3 

St John ambulance purchased in 

1949. These vehicles featured a 

unique V-shaped ‘sagging’ chassis 

for ease of patient loading.

War 2, St John volunteers from 

New Zealand played a pivotal 

role, both domestically within 

the Air Raid Precautions 

Scheme and abroad as medics

clinics, optimising blood 

collection services and, in 

1946, gaining status as a 

priory, enhancing its autonomy

transformation occurred in 

the 1970s with a move towards 

formal medical qualifications 

for ambulance personnel, 

superseding the era of basic 

first aid provision in ambulance 

services. 

In 1975, New Zealand’s first 

Telethon raised over $500,000 for 

a national ambulance training 

centre. In that very same year, St 

John ambulances travelled over 

4.5 million km, assisted by 1120 

personnel, while serving 251,000 

patients.

Extension Mātaitai Reserve 

Pursuant to Regulation 22 of the Fisheries 

(South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 

1999, the Director-General of the Ministry for 

Primary Industries gives the following notice. 

This notice declares the establishment of the Lyttelton Harbour / Whakaraupō Extension 

Mātaitai Reserve over the South Island fisheries waters from the eastern boundary of the 

existing Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō Mātaitai Reserve to the mouth of the harbour. 

The mātaitai reserve takes effect on 28 August 2023. 

A mātaitai reserve is an identified traditional fishing ground which tangata whenua 

have a special relationship with. Mātaitai reserves are limited to fisheries waters and 

do not include any land area. Mātaitai reserves do not change the existing recreational 

fishing rules. 

Commercial fishing in this mātaitai reserve is prohibited under regulation 24(2) of the 

Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999.
