Orana Park’s new
gibbon settling in

ORANA PARK has welcomed
its newest resident, a new male
siamang gibbon.
‘Suka’ was transferred as part
of an international breeding
programme, which aims
to increase the numbers of
endangered animals.
The 9-year-old siamang gibbon
quickly introduced himself to the
park’s 10-year-old female, Basuki,
after completing quarantine.
Zookeeper Spencer Hart said
it was great to see him swinging
around and having a good time.
“He’s become very friendly with
our young female and it’s just
good to see that they’re getting
along so quickly and so readily.”
Suka has come to Canterbury
from Pairi Daiza Zoo in Belgium.
Hart said siamang gibbon
populations are critically
endangered in the wild, mostly due
to deforestation and loss of habitat.

LINCOLN University student
Arabella Dudfield has been
selected for her work with the
LGBTQIA+ community.
Dudfield has received a
place on the YWCA’s Y25
programme, which brings
together 25 young women and
non binary people challenging
the status quo.
She was selected for her
previous work as students’
association rainbow equity,
diversity, inclusion and wellbeing
representative.
“I’m so proud to be the first
Lincoln student to serve as
EDI and well-being rep. It’s
been an incredible experience,
and I’ve gained valuable
insights into governance,
networking and policies,”
Dudfield said.
The Bachelor of Agribusiness
and Food Marketing student
is also co-president of
SPACE, Lincoln’s studentled
LGBTQIA+ support
organisation, and helped to
organise the university’s
pride walk and first-ever Queer
Ball.

advocating for the visibility

and rights of the LGBTQIA+
community on campus,” said
Dudfield.
Dudfield hopes to extend
her work out into the wider
community, with a special focus
on the land-based sector.
“To achieve this, I believe that
education will play a significant
role in enlightening people
about the various roles and
opportunities that exist within
the sector,” she said.
“By providing a better
understanding and awareness,
we can foster a more inclusive
and representative environment
in the primary industries.”
