Award winning beer
starts right here
The 2023 New Zealand Beer awards were
held on Saturday 5 August at the Wigram
Airforce Museum, Christchurch, with 300
people attending the formal Gala dinner
and awards ceremony. These awards are
the pinnacle for NZ brewers to benchmark
their beer with the best in the country.
There were 825 entries for 15 trophies,
awarded across 123 different style classes
from Pilsners to Stouts and everything in
between.
“The huge variety of flavoursome beer
on offer these days is quite incredible
compared to 20 years ago”, says Gabi
Michael from Gladfield Malt – one of the
main sponsors of the event.
The way that people consume beer now
is very different than in the era of the
infamous 6 o’clock closing. There is a vast
array of flavours and styles on offer now
for the discerning customer. Brew bars and
tap rooms are very popular around the
country, allowing people to come together
in a family-friendly and socially acceptable
way. People can relax and unwind, with
flavour and quality of the beer being key to
an enjoyable social experience, not volume
of consumption.
The New Zealand Brewers Guild, run
and supported by local breweries, is a
strong advocate for promoting social and
environmental responsibility in the brewing
industry. This year, the Sustainability
Award went to Sawmill Brewery who, like
many small players in the industry, are
stepping up to lead by example and make a
difference.
But of course, great beer cannot be
produced without great ingredients. The
Selwyn district is renowned for growing
the world’s best barley, used for making
malt, the main ingredient in beer. Selwyn’s
own malting company Gladfield has been
instrumental for many years in crafting this
barley into malt.
Gladfield, on behalf of all the breweries,
would like to say “Cheers” to the many
growers who work hard day after day
making it possible for us all to enjoy
worldclass beer.
