Wednesday August 16 2023 Selwyn Times Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz NEWS 3 Plan aims to get more people moving • By Daniel Alvey A NEW strategic plan will focus on getting the district more active in years to come. The Waikirikiri Selwyn Play, Active Recreation and Sport Strategic Action Plan 2023- 2027 (PARS plan) is focused on getting more people active, while improving relationships between the district council and sports clubs, schools, and sports regional organisations. The plan is designed to give the district council a guiding framework on how to meet the current and future needs of residents for play, active recreation and sport. It is not targeted at improving or developing facilities provided by the district council – that will be the job of the Spaces and Places Plan, which will be unveiled within the next two months. In the last three years, 11 out of 33 sports in the district have had a more than 11 per cent increase in participation, with the largest increases being in cricket, gymnastics, football and basketball. District council head of sport and recreation James Richmond said this is a first for the district council, with previous PARS plans only James Richmond focusing on spaces and facilities rather than activities. “Traditionally play, active recreation, and sport has been a very project-based, transactional conversation in this district. “A club will come to us and say we need more fields or changing rooms (and) we’ll go and develop that and back out of the conversation. This aims to really address that and bring the community along for the ride in this conversation,” he said. The plan aims to address some of the future challenges for the district like a growing population, which includes a large youth population, as well as existing issues of declining volunteerism and women and girls’ participation in sport. As a result of the plan being approved by district councillors in the community services committee last week, 23 actions will be implemented over the next FUTURE: The Waikirikiri Selwyn Play, Active Recreation and Sport Strategic Action Plan 2023-2027 will focus on getting more people active, including the district’s growing youth population. Those actions will include improving communication, promoting PARS, understanding the barriers for people, investigating options for under-used district council facilities, and activating opportunities with a particular focus on women, youth and rural communities. Richmond said while the district council will be there to support clubs, they will not be there to prop up failing clubs. One of the stakeholders involved in helping the district council was Selwyn Sports Trust, which has implemented a large number of sporting activities in the district. General manager Doug McSweeney said he was happy to see the district council putting a focus on people being active. “The more people that Doug McSweeney are active every day the better the community health is and I think to plan for more than one year, to have a strategic approach to play, activity and sport is really important, just so we know where the strategy is heading.” He said the district council being involved in the activation space as well as facility space was good to see. “You have got to have a vision and strategy and that is what the council has delivered.” Most of the proposed actions will be delivered within the current budget and staffing.
