PLANS TO make sections of
busy Fendalton roads safer for
all road users are out for public
feedback.
The proposal to upgrade
sections of Glandovey Rd and
Idris Rd between Fendalton
Rd includes installing new
pedestrian refuge islands, speed
cushions, cycle lanes, and kerb
buildouts.
City council transport
planning and delivery manager
Jacob Bradbury said the project
Long wait
damaged
intersection
almost
at an end
• By Briar Allen
WORK TO repair a busy
Hornby intersection should be
finished within the next two
months.
The city council has been
waiting 18 months for KiwiRail
to grant a permit so it can
replace a traffic light pole and
repair a pedestrian island at
the Aymes and Shands Rds
intersection.
The land is owned by KiwiRail
and a spokesperson confirmed
the permit has been issued to
allow the work to start.
“We
acknowledge it
has taken longer
than normal to
process, and we
are working with
rail corridor is
granted in a timelier manner,”
the spokesperson said.
City council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said, given the extent of
the work to fix the traffic signal
and other damage, the relevant
permit and deeds had to be
obtained from KiwiRail.
Tree planting plans opposed;
further discussion tabled
• By Briar Allen
RESIDENTS HAVE opposed
the proposed urban tree planting
plans for parks in the Wigram
area.
Residents Jamie Houston,
Glenn Smith and Gayle Mander
spoke at last week’s Waipuna
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board meeting
about how the plans for De
Lange Reserve, Marama Park
and Tautoru Park would affect
their residences.
The plans are a part of the city
council’s Urban Forest Plan,
which aims to increase canopy
coverage while ensuring the right
species are planted in appropriate
locations.
Houston said he purchased
his section on Olsen Way with
north-facing views of Tautoru
Park as it provides good sun.
“The trees at the suggested
height of 10-20m are going to
affect those houses across the
way, they will suffer the same
shadowing effect,” he said.
Smith said putting in the proposed
trees at De Lange Reserve
will change how people participate
in recreational activities,
because the reserve is relatively
small.
“It’s just changing the life of
everybody. Putting up a few trees
is fine but up to 20m sounds absolutely
ridiculous to me,” he said.
Mandas said her place by De
Lange Reserve will be put completely
in the shade, and it will
have a big impact.
The feedback period for the
Urban Forest Plan saw submissions
raise concerns about the
type of species being used, height
and root damage, and space for
recreation.
City council arborist Toby
Chapman said changes have
already been made to the plans.
“In Tautoru Park two proposed
trees have been removed, we
have reduced the height
of some of the trees. The
species at Tautoru Park
and Marama Park will
have natives only. Seven
proposed trees have been
removed in De Lange
Reserve,” he said.
The board unanimously
passed the motion to
let the Wigram plans lie on the
table to allow for further consultation
with submitters.
Mark Peters
trees
between
10-20m
be planted
Park, which
residents
argue will
block out the
sun.
BRIAR ALLEN
Hornby Ward city councillor
Mark Peters said this was to
allow further consultation to be
carried out while being
careful not to increase the
workload of city council
staff.
Next steps will depend
on how quickly the
submitters and staff can
get together and come to
an agreement before these
plans can go ahead.
“We want to make sure we get
it right the first time and don’t
have to revisit it,” Peters said.
In Brief
FOOTPATHS TO BE
REPLACED
Deteriorated footpaths in Kyle
Park will be replaced in stages
from mid-August to late October.
The new paths will better match
the surrounding turf height. The
path leading to the toilet block
will also be realigned. At times
the rail underpass will need to
be closed but signage will be
posted advising the dates of
these closures with work to be
completed between 9am-3pm.
DECIDE THE FUTURE OF
THE CITY
The city council is urging
residents who live in the
Riccarton, Innes, Papanui and
Waimairi wards to tell it what
matters most to them so the
council can start working on its
2024-34 Long Term Plan. The
city council encourages as many
residents as possible to share what
No time to paws on registration
THERE ARE only a few weeks
left for people to register their
dogs.
City council dog owners must
have their registrations paid by
September 1 to avoid any late
penalties.
“We’ve sent out email and
mail notifications to remind
people to register their dogs,”
city council animal services
manager Lionel Bridger said.
“It’s great to see 70 per cent
of people have got theirs in so if
you haven’t, there is still time to
get onto it.”
Bridger says Responsible Dog
Owners should already have
completed their registration,
otherwise they may risk losing
their status.
“The team has received
significant number of requests
to update dog details and are
working very hard to have these
completed as soon as possible.
Owners waiting for their update
Speed cushions planned to slow traffic
•From page 1
“Speed cushions are
good for this area, as they
force ordinary vehicles to
slow down to go over them,
while heavy vehicles such
as buses, fire engines and
ambulances are typically
wide enough to straddle them,”
Bradbury said.
“This minimises the noise and
to be completed which would
affect their fees will not be
impacted.”
There was a small increase
to the fees. The standard
registration fee for spayed and
neutered dogs has increased
from $82 to $83 and the RDO
registration fee is has gone from
$59 to $60.
“While it doesn’t seem like
a lot it will help us continue to
provide the dog related services
we do in the community,”
Bridger said.
“This is things like
free dog microchipping,
free education programmes,
dog shelters, dog parks,
dog control investigations,
and patrols of beaches and
prohibited areas.”
•Registration
payments can be made
online, by phone or at any
of the city council’s service
centres.
vibration issues that sometimes
occurs from these types of
vehicles travelling over traffic
slowing features.”
Improvements to the
Glandovey/Fendalton
intersection, including kerb
buildouts and relocation of the
pedestrian crossing, are also
included in the plan to support
safety.
“To accommodate this plan,
some parking loss is required.
However, we’ve completed
parking occupancy surveys
which show that, on average,
enough parks will be left to
support current use,” Bradbury
said.
• Public feedback is
open until September 5.
Details can be found on
the city council website –
Green
light to fix
intersection
‘fantastic’
•From page 1
“During the approval process
to carry out rectification
measures to damaged assets,
additional asset damage
occurred, which altered the
working methodology and
therefore required to start the
relevant approval processes
again,” Wright said.
He said the traffic signals were
commissioned in 1988 and have
had no significant upgrades
carried out since.
“The below ground
infrastructure is therefore aged
and requires additional efforts
to upgrade to current standards
and future proofing.”
Hornby Ward city councillor
Mark Peters said he got an email
on Friday telling him the permit
had been granted.
“It is fantastic news. I
understand that staff will now
turn to start finalising plans to
get the signals at the intersection
renewed,” he said.
Peters said he is hoping a right
turn arrow will be included in
the renewal work.
“I have certainly asked to have
it done once and done right.”
Amyes and Shands Rds ‘a nightmare’
Readers react to the
article on issues around
turning right from
Amyes Rd into Shands
Rd, Hornby
Having used this road and
being stuck in the traffic at this
intersection is just nothing more
of a nightmare. This corner
really does need right turning
lights.
I am also a committee member
of Greater Hornby Residents
Association.
-Wayne Carey
This intersection is a nightmare,
we have been stuck there
numerous times waiting to get
across turning to the right, the
lights change and you are still
left sitting there.
Another shocking intersection
that has had numerous accidents
and near misses due to so many
red light runners is the Carmen/
Buchanan Rds intersection. A
right turning arrow is needed
so badly coming north from
Hornby and also from Buchanan
Rd heading toward the airport.
These are both right turning and
it is such a dangerous intersection.
-Christine Moyse, Broomfield
I’ve only been caught in traffic
twice on the Shands Rd side,
turning right into Amyes Rd.
Yes, a right turn arrow signal
Megan
Woods
MP for Wigram
would be great. I go down that
every morning on my way to
work in Rolleston. I’ve always
wondered why the cones and signage
are there. Normally I avoid
that intersection when heading
home.
-Simon Henry, Spreydon
Nobody has been held up as
the shunting line hasn’t been
used for the last 12 months or
thereabouts.
-Judy Watts
That intersection is a nightmare
and does not cater for the
volume of traffic in that area.
A right-hand turn traffic signal
would assist traffic flow. I have
European
Car Owners
NEW DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT!
lived in Hornby for 30 years and
I have never witnessed a train
crossing that intersection. Why
is it there?
-David Gale
We are so often delayed in
traffic at this intersection that we
avoid it if possible. Not having a
right turn arrow out of Amyes
into Shands is ridiculous, as any
driver in the queue that reaches
nearly back to Springs Road will
testify to. If this was an issue in
Merivale or Fendalton, no doubt
there would not have been an
18 month delay in getting a five
minute job done by Kiwirail.
-Richard and Maureen
Holdaway, Hornby
The island needs to be fixed!
Not only is it an embarrassment
to the city, the need for a right
turning arrow is absolutely paramount.
At peak times, it’s nigh
impossible to turn right. Also,
that’s a dead rail branch, when
was the last time anything got
sent down there?!
-Taylor Smith
It definitely needs a right turning
arrow both ways. I live on
Amyes Rd (Springs Rd end) and
am also a bus driver on the 125
route. On the bus you can lose 10
minutes or more, queued in traffic
to do a right-hand turn.
Because traffic is coming from
behind Dressmart on a curve
and cannot always see through
traffic as it speeds up to beat the
green light to go through there
have been many close calls.
Often traffic does not indicate
it is turning left and can delay
trying to get across even as a caution.
Those wishing to turn right
from Dressmart cannot see what
is whipping up the side of the
right turning traffic from Amyes
Rd and risks are taken in trying
to get into that gap.
Also the right turning traffic
from Amyes Rd is situated behind
the yellow lines leading up
to the railway lines, so is quite a
distance from being able to creep
into the intersection. Often you
are trying to turn on orange or
even red lights to get around.
Getting into my driveway,
I have never found a problem
even when there is a huge queue
of traffic going into Springs Rd.
I wait patiently indicating and
someone will always let me in.
However, doing a left-hand
turn into my driveway I have to
come out wide and those behind
me try to overtake me on the
left hand side although indicating,
because we have a huge
monstrosity of a lamp post on
the edge of the driveway, necessitating
the wide turn. And yes
there have been a few crashes,
following too close. Not with me
thank goodness.
Assessment
preparation
moves into
high gear
Tēnā koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all
We've had a very busy past couple of weeks and we're
heading into an even busier remainder of the term. We
have many events scheduled, a number of these are
centered around student
achievement and planning
for next year.
With so much on, students
could almost be forgiven for
being distracted. However
this is a good time for
students to reflect on what
they have achieved this year
so far. Are you on track with
your internal assessments?
You should have gained
approximately half of your
required credits to pass
NCEA by now. If you need
further assistance, meet with
your Dean or specific subject teacher to work out an
action plan to ensure you meet your goals and succeed.
NCEA external examinations commence on November 6
(11 weeks of school left, excluding the holidays).
Derived grade examinations are fast approaching
(week of Sept 11 to 15). Students should be discussing
with their teachers what they need to be revising for
these exams. These are important examinations, so all
students need to attend and try their absolute best.
These examinations will be used if a student cannot for
genuine reasons attend the external NCEA examinations
at the end of the school year. If you need support or
are struggling you can see your teacher, your Dean,
the school Guidance Counsellor. Please ensure you
speak to someone. Students who are away during the
examination week will be provided the examination on
their return to school.
Over the next month, remember to persevere, keep
aiming high and refer back to our school values,
COMMITMENT, ACHIEVEMENT, RESPECT AND
RESILIENCE.
In a world that thrives on innovation,
knowledge, and the whirlwind of
constant change, education remains
steadfast as the heart and soul of
personal and societal growth. It's a
beacon guiding us towards a brighter
future, and regular school attendance is
the warm embrace that paves the way
for success.
A strong foundation for learning
Regular school attendance is the soil in
which the seeds of education flourish,
establishing a strong foundation for
lifelong growth. Every day spent in
the classroom becomes a place where
students engage with fresh ideas,
explore new concepts, and broaden their
horizons. By consistently participating
in this journey, they not only master
fundamental skills but also cultivate the
art of critical thinking and the craft of
problem-solving. Absences from school
create gaps in knowledge that hinder
their ability to grasp more complex
concepts as they journey further into
their education.
Trip restarts Japanese connection
Ten Hornby High School students, family
members and two school staff travelled to
Japan last month as part of our school's first
trip to the Asian country in more than five
years.
Departing Christchurch on July 8 for a
marathon journey across Australia to
Singapore, the group then flew north to Japan,
where they finally stepped off the aircraft into
the summer heat on Sunday morning, July 9.
Overall, it was a highly successful and
memorable trip.
We look forward to hosting students from
Tokiwagi next March, and of course our own
return trip in July 2025.
More pictures and details of the trip are
available to view on our facebook page and
newsletter.
Trio get set to join trip to Disneyland
Three Hornby High School students are
getting ready to travel to Los Angeles and
San Diego, thanks to Koru Care.
Max O, Brianna D and Kaea K will leave
Christchurch on October 14 and return
two weeks later.
While in the United States they will
be visiting Disneyland, Knotsberry
Farm, Hollywood, an ice hockey game,
Universal Studios and a number of other
events and activities.
The group comprises 11 carers, one
doctor and 22 young people from
throughout Christchurch supporting the
students.
"Koru Care" is an Air NZ charitable
organisation based that aims to fulfill
the dreams of seriously ill and disabled
children. The organisation arranges travel
and experiences for these children.
What an amazing opportunity. We wish
you all the very best.
Lifelong benefits of regular school attendence – a pathway to success
1 or 2 days a week doesn't seem like much but... Cultivating discipline and responsibility
Attendance at school instills a sense of
discipline and responsibility in students.
By adhering to a routine and fulfilling
commitments, young people learn
the importance of punctuality and
dedication. These qualities are not only
essential during the formative years
but also lay the groundwork for success
in their working life. Employers value
individuals who have a strong work
ethic and are reliable; traits often honed
through consistent school attendance.
How about 10 minutes late a day? Surely that won't affect my child?
Building social skills and networks
School is a microcosm of society,
providing students with opportunities
to interact with peers from diverse
backgrounds. Regular attendance fosters
the development of crucial social skills
such as communication, teamwork,
and conflict resolution. Moreover, the
connections made in school can evolve
into lifelong friendships and professional
networks. These relationships often
prove invaluable later in life, offering
support and opportunities.
Brianna D Kaea K Max O
Preparation for ongoing education, work
Consistent attendance in school prepares
students for the challenges of ongoing
education, work, apprenticeships and
the demands of seeking and successfully
starting a job. The continuity of learning
helps students build a strong academic
profile, enhancing their prospects of
attending university or gaining a job
of their choice. Additionally, a robust
educational background increases
employability, positioning individuals for
better job opportunities and high pay.
Breaking the cycle of disadvantage
Regular school attendance can play
a pivotal role in breaking the cycle of
disadvantage. Education is a powerful
tool that can uplift individuals from
challenging circumstances, providing
them with opportunities they might not
have otherwise. By attending school
consistently, individuals from challenging
backgrounds can access resources,
knowledge, and skills that empower
them to overcome barriers and create a
brighter future.

Lifestyle leads to world champs
• By Jaime Cunningham
FOR BROOKE Bennett,
swimming has always been a
lifestyle.
Before she started to swim
competitively, Bennett can
remember going down to the
pool often with her family
members.
“It’s always been in the family.
“My nana used to always
take me down to the pool, but
I mainly got into it because
my sister used to swim
competitively,” she said.
Just six years after starting
to swim competitively, the
year 12 student at Villa Maria
College is off to the junior world
championships in Israel next
month.
She managed to reach what
Swimming New Zealand calls
a “silver” time in the 1500m
freestyle event at the national
age group championships in
April to qualify for next month’s
meet.
The 16-year-old is the only
South Island-based swimmer
selected in the seven-strong
team, and is “really excited” to
represent New Zealand for the
first time.
“I really want to do well in my
swims, and hopefully get some
personal bests – but mainly I
just want to enjoy the
ENDURANCE: Brooke Bennett specialises in long-course freestyle events.
experience,” the Vikings
swimmer said.
Bennett will race in the
200m, 800m and 1500m freestyle
events at the six-day meet.
She goes into the meet
following a successful
New Zealand short course
championships in Hastings
last week where Bennett claimed
gold in the 16 years
200m, 400m and 1500m
freestyle.
Although Bennett’s specialist
races are the longer-course
freestyle events, she admits
she “likes to do some
breaststroke every now and
then.”
The junior team will travel to
Dubai on Sunday for a two-week
camp before the meet begins on
September 4.
It will be Bennett’s first time
travelling further than Australia
to compete, as well as the
biggest meet she has ever
competed in.
Bennett will also represent
New Zealand in the Queensland
State Championships in
December before heading to
Sydney for the New South
Wales open water
championships.
Although Bennett wants
to wear the fern again after
this year, she is focused on her
short-term goals rather than
the pinnacle events like the
Commonwealth or
Olympic Games.
“I mean it’s definitely a
possibility, but I don’t want to
put that pressure on me. I just try
to be my best.
“And if that means I go to
the Commonwealth Games or
Olympics, that’s how it is.”
SUCCESS: Brooke Bennett
claimed three gold medals
at the New Zealand short
course championships in
Hastings last week.
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961
• Members of the Insulation Association of
New Zealand.
• We offer a free measure and quote in the
Canterbury region with no obligations.
• Assessments can be made in all other
regions by arrangement.
ground moisture barrier needs.
ATTACK RISING DAMP
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
Electric Ford Mustang worthy of the badge
THE MACH-E is a truly
transformational EV that’s
sending Ford’s iconic Mustang
charging into an exciting, fully
electrified future.
This is the first production
Ford developed from the
ground-up to deliver pureelectric,
zero-emission driving.
There’s a choice of single-motor
rear-wheel drive and dual-motor
all-wheel drive performance. In
GT AWD form it has a claimed
0-100km/h-sprint time of just 3.7
seconds.
The Mach-E is instantly recognisable
as a Mustang with signature
elements such as its long,
sculptured bonnet, rear-haunch
design, aggressive headlights and
trademark tri-bar tail lamps.
Three models are sold here,
starting with a 198kw rear wheel
drive priced at $79,990, allowing
it to sneak with the skinniest of
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
margins under the $80k threshold
for the Government’s $7015
clean car rebate for full electric
vehicles. From there, it’s a sizeable
step up to the 258kw AWD
retailing for $109,990 and the
subject of this review.
Those wanting even more
hyper-amped performance get
it in spades with the 358kw GT
AWD. All this performance
aggression comes at a cost with
a real world, all-electric driving
range of 490km, compared to the
550km for our test drive vehicle.
The entry-level rear wheel drive
has a respectable all-electric
driving range of 440km.
The 258kw of power produced
by the test vehicle is plenty for
delivering an ultra smooth and
responsive drive that will win
this car plenty of fans.
Driving aggressively – which is
tempting given the exhilarating
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
performance at your disposal – is
a sure-fire way to burn off a lot
of battery quickly. Making smart
use of the 1 pedal system goes
some way toward replenishing
the battery.
Practicality is one area
where the Mach-E trounces its
traditional two-door Mustang
siblings. Ford engineers and
designers have in a master stroke
created a vehicle that’s not only
true to the Mustang brand, but
offers plenty of space for five passengers
and their luggage.
There’s a generous 402 litres of
load area behind the rear seats.
A front trunk storage unit made
possible by the absence of a
conventional petrol engine under
the bonnet offers an additional
81 litres of storage space.
On board is a host of advanced
driver assistance technologies to
keep you safe. Heading an exhaustive
list is Intelligent Adaptive
Cruise Control with Stop
& Go and Lane Centring. This
keeps you a comfortable distance
from traffic ahead and helps keep
the vehicle centred in its lane.
Park Assist takes the guesswork
out of parking by automatically
manoeuvring the vehicle into
parallel parking spaces.
There’s also Pre-Collision Assist
with Auto Emergency Braking
and a Lane-Keeping System
with Blind Spot Assist.
The All-wheel drive system
applies torque independently
to the front and rear wheels
for improved acceleration and
handling. Unique shock absorbers,
springs and anti-roll bars
settings are tuned to take charge
on our plethora of twisty undulating
roads, and they do the job
with aplomb.
There’s a nice balance between
ride comfort and handling,
although the ride may be a bit
firm for some tastes in low speed
urban driving. Nicely weighted
steering with a decent measure
of road feel make a good driving
vehicle great.
Poised and polished road
holding makes the Mach-E a
worthy bearer of the legendary
Mustang badge.
