Living to convert the former 

Redcliffs supermarket into 22 

apartments is now on hold 

after the city council invited 

feedback from neighbours, and 

two objected. 

A resource consent is 

needed because the proposal 

doesn’t comply with current 

zoning, but it was decided 

close neighbours, who will be 

affected by shading from the 

new building, also needed to be 

consulted. 

The building, which will be 

reconstructed from the former 

Four Square supermarket, will 

be up to 3.67m taller than rules 

allow. Two neighbours objected, 

saying the building will be too 

imposing, will overlook their 

properties and will block much 

of their winter sun.

Association chair Christine 

Toner said she is aware some 

people have objected, but has 

not received negative feedback 

about Fletcher Living’s plans. 

“I haven’t heard from 

anyone against it becoming 

apartments. 

“Most people don’t like what 

is there now and I think people 

are looking forward to seeing 

some life in the building and it 

looking a lot nicer,” she said. 

Planning commissioner 

Andrew Henderson said the 

proposal would contribute 

positively to the Redcliffs centre 

and “will provide activation 

and vibrancy to the street”. 

He said the extra building 

height appeared to be for 

architectural design reasons. 

Fletcher Living plans to 

dismantle the first and second 

floors of the supermarket and 

retain existing ground floor car 

parking.

Self-flying, electric air taxi on show 

FROM A self-flying taxi to a robot 

security guard, the Innovation Expo 

offers a window to the future. 

Expo-goers will be treated to an 

close-up of the Wisk Aero self-flying 

air taxi as they enter Te Pae, said organiser 

and Smart Christchurch city 

initiatives lead Grace de Leon. 

The Wisk Aero 5th generation air 

taxi, known as Cora, is the company’s 

autonomous, all-electric, vertical 

take-off and landing (eVTOL) air 

taxi demonstrator. Backed by Boeing, 

Wisk has been developing and testing 

electric aircrafts since 2010. 

“This technology is ground-breaking,” 

de Leon said. 

“And while it can take time for new 

innovations to become mainstream, 

just look at AI (artificial intelligence), 

which went global almost overnight, 

or electric vehicles that rapidly gained 

a huge share of the market.” 

Spark NZ will display a variety of 

advanced technologies, including an 

all-terrain robot. There will also be

DAN SHEPHERD would not be 

here today if it were not for his 

perfect match, Ezra, the guide 

dog who saved his life. 

Shepherd welcomed Ezra, a 

labrador retriever cross, into his 

family in October 2021. Within 

the first two weeks of having 

him, Ezra saved Shepherd’s life 

as a woman backed out of her 

driveway quite fast – and Ezra 

decided they were not going to 

walk any further and put on the 

brakes. 

“We stopped and suddenly her 

car was right in front of me. If I 

was still using my white cane, she 

would have killed me or at least 

pushed me onto the footpath. 

Ezra finds and gets what I need. I 

trust him.” 

Shepherd was diagnosed with 

Retinitis Pigmentosa when he 

was 15-years-old and reached out 

to Blind Low Vision NZ for help. 

“The condition has taken away 

my peripheral vision and I previously 

accessed the orientation 

and mobility service for my 

white cane use, and I was put 

on a waitlist for a guide dog,” he 

said. 

Shepherd said he waited 19 

years to reach out for help, as 

when he was diagnosed as a 

teenager it was a lot to process 

and it took him awhile to become 

comfortable and accept being 

identified with a disability. 

“It was a process for me to 

be happy being identified as a 

person with a disability. I have 

two boys, aged seven and four, 

and it was when the eldest was 

about two-and-a-half that he 

was becoming more mobile and 

wanted his dad to be active in his 

life. That was my motivation, to 

be a part of their lives.” 

Shepherd said working with 

Ezra is freeing as he can trust 

him to make the best decisions 

for both of them, unlike with the 

white cane he was using before 

where he had to process the information 

it was giving him and 

make decisions from that. 

“He is the perfect match. It is 

that feeling of freedom. For the 

first time I was able to walk at my 

own pace, I got matched with a 

dog who helps bring awareness.

Shepherd works at Blind Low 

Vision NZ as the head of access 

and awareness, and said there 

was a three-year wait before he 

was matched with Ezra as the 

matching process was quite 

intense. 

“My walking speed was 

tracked so Ezra is matched to 

my walking speed, I am a bigger 

guy so I needed a bigger dog who 

would be able to stop me from 

walking when necessary. 

“I also travel for work so Ezra 

is good in new places and likes 

meeting new people.” 

He said it takes about $100,000 

to train a guide dog, which is one 

of the main challenges. 

“It is why we need campaigns 

Pawgust to put dogs in the 

community. The dogs go through 

a 19-week training programme 

before a final test which only 

two out of six dogs’ pass. This 

is why we need more funding 

to breed more dogs who will be 

successful.”

during the month of August to 

help raise vital funds for Blind 

Low Vision NZ guide dogs.

designates much of Redcliffs 

at risk from flooding, erosion 

and tsunamis, and that might 

prohibit any future residential 

development on the site. 

Said city council head of 

planning and consents, John 

Higgins: “It is difficult to say how 

PC14 provisions would impact on 

the assessment and consideration 

of the application.” 

The supermarket was a $20m 

rebuild after the February 

22, 2011 earthquake. It was 

converted to a Four Square in 

2020 but closed less than a year 

after that. 

The vacant property was then 

purchased by Fletcher Residential 

for $5.5m. 

The planning hearing to 

consider the consent application 

is scheduled for October with the 

commissioner’s decision likely by 

November. 

The city council’s Plan Change 

14 is not expected to be approved 

until March next year at the 

earliest.

PEOPLE ARE being urged to 

think twice about what’s going 

down their drains ahead of the 

summer swimming season.

Harbour swimming bays were 

deemed unfit for swimming 

last summer, partly due to 

contaminated storm water. 

Recent testing of 50 

Christchurch sites found all 

failed at least one of the bacterial, 

heavy metals or sediment 

standards, Environment 

Canterbury’s surface water 

science manager Dr Elaine 

Moriarty said. 

“A lot of people don’t realise 

that what falls on our streets and 

our roads and our gardens goes 

straight into our rivers,” she said. 

“So if there’s anything in the 

path of that, be it dog poo, or 

rubbish or paint brushes that 

get washed in the tap outside - 

they all just flow straight into

our rivers. There’s no filter or 

anything like that.” 

All but three of the sites failed 

the safe E-coli standard. 

Bacteria levels were especially 

important when it came to 

testing for safe swimming levels. 

“E-coli is kind of like a red 

flag, it indicates that there could 

potentially be an issue. As a 

comparison, your dog poo that 

you pick up off the road - even if 

there’s one gram of that left, that 

has a million E-coli in it.” 

ECan found human and 

animal waste was a major 

contributor to ruling some of 

the region’s beaches unfit for 

swimming last summer. 

A clean up at the Ōpāwaho 

Heathcote River in May saw 

more than two tonnes of rubbish 

removed and taken to landfill, 

Moriarty said. 

“Over 300 dog poos they 

picked up, a barbecue, a 

Christmas tree - one of the shiny, 

sparkly plastic ones - road cones, 

plastics,” said Moriarty. 

The city council was also 

pulling a few electric scooters 

or bikes out of rivers every two 

weeks. 

“Everything you could 

imagine ends up there, along 

with our beautiful taonga 

species. Our eels, fish, our 

inanga that people love for their 

whitebait sandwiches - they’re all 

in there as well, competing with 

that rubbish,” she said. 

The problem was not unique 

to Canterbury either, with 

pollution of waterways occurring 

throughout the country. 

Everyone can help improve the 

water quality, Moriarty said. 

“If you’re out for a walk with 

your dog, just pick up the poo 

and put it in a bin. If you need 

to wash your car, bring it to a 

car wash or wash it over the 

grass, just not on your driveway 

because all those [soap] suds and 

dirt and everything just goes 

straight down into the stream. 

“It’s kind of like washing your 

dinner plates over your fish 

tank.” 

People could also ask their 

mechanic about fitting brake 

pads with low copper levels next 

time their car was in the shop or 

use a special paint to seal heavy 

metals into their roofs, so they 

didn’t run out with the rain, 

Moriarity said. 

If anyone saw something 

blocking or running into a storm 

water drain, they could use the

local authorities wherever they 

are in the country, she said.

celebration over Labour 

weekend, the Lyttelton 

Volunteer Fire Brigade 

looks back at its past in 

a regular column

Brigade’s 150th anniversary 

celebrations, which is just 

over eight weeks away.

were worn by brigade 

members into the 1950s.

Jones, deputy superintendent

his chest and do the maths to

members of the Lyttelton 

Volunteer Fire Brigade who 

are being saluted this Labour 

Weekend. Celebrations

A TASTE for the sea, sailing, 

and a passion for community has 

led to Cameron Jones receiving a 

community service award. 

Cameron Jones, 17, 

has received a Waipuna 

Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton 

youth service award. 

Cameron volunteers his time 

at Naval Point Club in Lyttelton, 

where he regularly assists on 

support boats and at the twilight 

sailing series, as well as with tree 

plantings and beach and river 

clean-ups. 

He is also involved at the Waimakariri 

Sailing Club, where he 

is a committee junior representative 

and coach. 

Cameron studies mechanical 

engineering at Ara. 

“I was very surprised when 

I got the first email about the 

award. I was put forward by the 

former principal of Hornby High 

School, Robin Sutton. It felt pretty 

good to receive the award,” he 

said. 

Cameron has been sailing 

since 2017 and enjoys giving 

back to the community. He said 

he especially enjoys getting new 

people into sailing and keeping 

the clubs running. 

“You never know the 

connections you might make; 

you meet lots of people who 

like to see young people getting 

involved.” 

He said thanks to his volunteering 

he has been able to develop 

skills he would not have been 

able to develop otherwise. 

“Being involved with these 

places have helped me get my 

qualifications for coaching, I got 

these skills because I put myself 

out there,” Cameron said. 

He wanted to thank his sailing 

coach Jeff O’Leary for all his 

support. 

“I could not be where I am 

now without him.”

SIR BOB Charles might be 87 – 

but he can still hit a sub 70. 

On a recent trip to England, he 

not only found time for some golf 

but shot a remarkable 69 at Royal 

Wimbledon. It was the first time 

he had broken 70 in 10 years. 

He and wife Verity were visiting 

family in Wimbledon where 

his daughter Beverly lives. 

“It was a good opportunity 

to escape the New Zealand 

winter and get some nice warmer 

weather where I could play golf,” 

he said. 

“I don’t play winter golf in 

New Zealand now, so it was great 

to get away for five weeks and 

play five rounds of golf. I would 

like to have got in more but the 

weather wasn’t great.” 

Charles also caught up with 

his good friend, South African 

retired professional golfer Gary 

Player, 87. Charles won the 1963 

British Open, while Player, who 

is considered one of the greatest 

golfers of all time, won the 1968 

Open, finishing two strokes 

ahead of Charles. 

“We had a lovely round at the 

Edinburgh course at Wentworth, 

which we had played before 

and know quite well. It was my 

first round of golf in over two

months. I shot 76 and Gary shot 

78. I was happy with that and it 

was a great get together after 12 

months since our last catch-up,” 

Charles said. 

“The following week I played 

Queenwood in Surrey, a relatively 

new course. I shot 74 on the 

5930 yards course. The Queenwood 

Club is probably one of the 

most expensive clubs to join in 

the UK. 

“Apparently it is currently at 

least 200,000 pounds to join, 

then around 25,000 pounds 

annually.” 

The following week Charles 

played Beaverbrook, another 

course in Surrey with a 200,000 

pounds joining fee. It is named 

after Lord Beaverbrook, an MP 

during World War 2 who was 

tasked by Winston Churchill 

with speeding up production of 

the Spitfire fighter planes, which 

he did successfully. 

Much of the club’s apparel has 

Spitfire logos and the scorecard 

also has a Spitfire. 

Charles said he was just one 

over par with six holes to go and 

finished six over par with 79, his 

poorest score over there. 

His final two rounds were both 

on the 6067 yard Royal Wimbledon 

course where his daughter 

and wife’s nephew are members. 

“I was four over par playing 18, 

then holed a wedge shot from 100 

yards for a two and a 72, resulting 

in a kiss for the golf ball. 

“My second round was my 

best round and that was exciting 

because I had 15 pars, two birdies 

and one bogey for a 69. That is 

the first time I have broken 70 in 

almost 10 years.” 

Four of the par fours he 

couldn’t reach in two shots, 

making it a real challenge to get 

down in two more shots for par. 

“I only had 28 putts and was 

holing pretty much everything 

inside 15 feet.”

The demise of the mighty Mitre 

OVER RECENT weeks, residents 

of Ōhinehou Lyttelton 

have been observing Frews 

Contracting’s ‘bite by bite’ demolition 

of the historic Mitre Hotel 

on Norwich Quay with mixed 

responses. 

In recognition of the significance 

of the building, it seems 

fitting to highlight this very early 

1865 image of the original Mitre 

Hotel, named, along with the 

Quay it flanked, after the Anglican 

Bishopric of Norwich. 

The dark, two-storey timber 

building visible in the centre 

of the image is the first Mitre 

Hotel, an initiative by Major 

Alfred Hornbrook to replace the 

unlicensed temporary premises, 

which he had been operating 

there alongside a boatbuilder and 

sailmaker. 

Ideally situated near the waterfront 

and at the base of the Bridle 

Path, it became an important 

refreshment and meeting spot 

for new migrants in the wave 

of the Canterbury Association’s 

planned settlement, which began 

in earnest with the arrival of 

‘The First Four Ships’ in 1850. 

The large three-storey stone 

structure flanking the waterfront 

is the 1864 Hargreaves building, 

adjacent to Heywood’s Store. 

The 1861 Lyttelton Methodist 

(or Wesleyan) Church is visible 

above the roofline of the Mitre 

Hotel. Sheet piling evident 

in front of that structure was 

intended to protect the foreshore. 

The image itself appears to be 

taken from the vantage point 

of the ‘Government Jetty’ (also 

known as Thomas’ Jetty), the 

first to be built in this location. 

In April 1850, Canterbury 

Association founder John Robert 

Godley admired the Mitre Hotel 

on his arrival in Lyttelton and 

was impressed by it and other facilities 

in the fledgling European 

settlement. 

Integral to the port’s activities, 

ship’s labourers or ‘lumpers’ 

would wait at the Mitre to be 

hired and paid. Land and property 

sales, postal services, public 

meetings, company and society 

AGMs, inquests and all manner 

of events were held within its 

walls, including a dinner to celebrate 

Queen Victoria’s birthday 

in 1851. The Lyttelton Times was 

regularly sprinkled with reports 

of licensing breaches by publicans 

or barmaids and incidents 

of a more or less serious nature, 

some but not all involving ‘intoxicating 

liquor’. 

In 1870 Lyttelton’s ‘Great Fire’ 

decimated most of the central 

and commercial heart of the 

township. Savvy action by the 

Mitre’s publican in rallying seamen 

to create a bucket brigade, 

using beer from the hotel’s barrels 

to douse the Mitre’s shingled 

roof, saved the building from 

the ashen fate of many others. 

Ironically, just five years later, in 

August 1875 the first Mitre Hotel 

was totally lost to fire. 

A new hotel designed by 

architect and engineer John 

Sigismund Jacobsen used 

native timbers with a gracious 

recessed second storey balcony, 

curved parapet and substantial 

entrance opening onto Norwich 

Quay. Proprietor RJ Henry 

proudly advertised “first-class 

accommodation at moderate 

prices” and “every modern 

convenience”. 

Our second photograph shows 

this fine building at the turn of 

the century. Amongst numerous 

other goings-on, in 1910 

Captain Scott’s farewell dinner 

was held in the ballroom, prior 

to his departure on the British 

Antarctic Expedition aboard the 

Terra Nova, which would end so 

tragically. 

Sadly, the second Mitre also 

fell victim to fire. Primarily 

fuelled by coal, Lyttelton’s airspace 

was a distinctly smoggy 

one in those days, and fireplace 

and chimney fires were common. 

It is likely those causes 

were behind a fire in 1925, which 

caused extensive damage to the 

timber building. Repairs were 

still being undertaken when the 

building was completely gutted 

in yet another conflagration in 

March 1926. 

As a consequence of this fire, 

the Licensing Board requested 

a change in materials for the 

third Mitre Hotel. Built in 

1926 for licensee Charles Percy 

Cameron (the Cameron family 

having owned the hotel since the 

late 1870s), it was a substantial 

structure of brick and reinforced 

concrete, intended to withstand 

fire. The new hotel’s open 

balcony, curved parapet and 

imposing entrance referenced its 

timber predecessor, albeit with 

an art deco flavour not seen in 

the pre-war period of the earlier 

building. 

The non timber construction 

served its purpose in the face 

of Lyttelton’s second great fire 

of Christmas Eve 1942, which 

began in Rhinds Grain Store 

along Norwich Quay. This time, 

although some neighbouring 

buildings were total losses, 

the impact on the Mitre was 

restricted to shattered windows, 

scorched walls and some internal 

damage. 

The Mitre continued to 

provide public house facilities 

and first floor accommodation 

right through to the1960s. In 

the 1970s the New Zealand 

Breweries (later Lion Nathan) 

took over ownership, and a 

distinctive brown ale beer bottle 

adorned with a bishop’s mitre 

hat came into use; no doubt a 

sought-after collection item for 

those inclined to such pursuits. 

Purchased by the current owners 

in 2005 and badly damaged in 

the earthquakes of 2010 and 

2011, the building was deemed 

uneconomic to repair; despite 

efforts it did not attract heritage 

funding for the significant costs 

of repair. 

Love it or loathe it, the 

demolition of the Mitre marks 

a significant loss of what little 

remains of colonial architecture 

in Ōhinehou Lyttelton. That 

the current Mitre has ‘hung on’ 

so long is probably testament 

to its monolithic construction. 

Its demise means the British 

Hotel on the corner of Oxford 

St and Norwich Quay has the 

poignant honour of being the 

only remaining traditional hotel 

building in Lyttelton. The Mitre 

Hotel site remains important as 

Canterbury’s first commercial 

and licensed premises and for 

playing host as watering hole, 

accommodation provider and 

local community gathering spot 

for over 150 years.

Since BMW took over the 

reins at Mini 20 years ago, its 

gone from the out-house to the 

penthouse. 

Fitted with a modest 32.6kWh 

lithium-ion battery, the Mini 

E produces a healthy 135kW 

of power. With its batteries 

deposited in the centre of the 

car in a T-shape, it’s well set to 

deliver Mini’s signature ‘go-kart’ 

handling qualities. With its big 

personality and stand-out from 

the crowd looks, this is car you’ll 

never get bored with. 

The Mini Electric Hatch is 

based on the distinctive design 

of the three-door petrol powered 

Cooper S and has distinctive 

exterior accents for a unique first 

ever Mini EV. For a very small 

car, albeit a lavishly appointed

the alternatives lack the Mini E’s

measurement standards, the 

MINI Electric Hatch is also 

perfect for metropolitan dwellers 

and intra-city commutes, able 

to achieve an 80 per cent charge 

in just 36 minutes when using 

a 50kW DC public charger. The 

Mini Electric Hatch retains the 

brands famed ‘go-kart’ driving 

feel by positioning powertrain 

components low in the car’s middrift 

and in a T-shape.

first-up foray by Mini into the 

EV market. A single speed 

transmission does a fine job and 

is an understated contributor to 

making this such a impressive 

vehicle. 

On thing that strikes you 

when stepping into the passenger 

compartment is just how small 

it is. There’s a reason why this 

hatch is called a Mini? If you are 

used to driving a larger vehicle 

it takes a while to adjust. It’s a 

comfortable two-seater with 

enough room for a couple of 

smaller types to shoehorn their 

way into the back seat and park 

up for short trips. Being in this 

confined space, especially if you 

are even slightly claustrophobic, 

wouldn’t be pleasant. 

The cabin is modern and tips 

its hat to some of the traditional 

Mini switchgear, but brings it 

into the 2lst century. All round 

visibility is good for a relatively 

low-slung car, although it can 

make entering and leaving the 

vehicle a challenge, if you aren’t 

as lithe and nimble these days. 

You’ll need to travel light and 

pack clever, as the rear hatch is 

tiny. Depositing a decent size soft 

overnight bag consumes most of 

the available luggage real estate. 

This one of the more lavishly 

equipped cars in its class and so 

it should be with its hefty $70k 

plus asking price. From whatever 

angle you look at it this is a 

seriously large sum of money for 

such a petite car. 

Mini attempts to take some 

of the sting out of the price with 

an exhaustive list of standard 

features. These include 17-inch 

alloy wheels (pretty big boots 

for a small car), Adaptive LED 

Headlights, an exclusive Mini 

Electric interior, leather sport 

seats with the driver and front 

passenger seats heated, head-up 

and digital dash and head-up 

displays. Things are rounded out 

on a musical note with a great 

sounding Harmon Kardon Hi-Fi 

Sound System. 

The Mini E may be among the 

tiniest cars on the market but 

its big on safety with a rear-view 

camera, while Parking Assistant 

takes the guess work out of 

edging the vehicle in and out of 

the tightest parks. This and its 

compact dimensions make it 

one of the easiest vehicles on the 

planet to park. Another handy bit 

of tech to keep you out of trouble 

is Driving Assistant with Lane 

Departure Warning. This gives 

an audible alert when you drift 

out of your traffic lane. 

Electrification is one of the best 

things to happen to the legendary 

Mini. It sets up perfectly to 

flourish in an automotive 

world transitioning – and it’s 

happening faster than you think 

– from internal combustion 

engines to electric motors and 

batteries. 

While this is a defining
