Thursday August 24 2023 53 Major cycleway on path to completion THE NEXT phase of construction is starting on a cycleway in the Belfast area. The Puari ki Pū-harakeke-nui Northern Line cycleway follows the Main North Line railway and currently connects Fendalton, Strowan, Papanui and Northcote to Riccarton and the central city. City council’s head of transport Lynette Ellis said the new section of the off-road cycleway is expected to open mid-2024 and will extend the route through Redwood. “From August 21, work will start along the railway corridor between Tuckers Rd and Sturrocks Rd, and between Barnes Rd and Main North Rd,” she said. Barnes Reserve sits between these two points, and that part of the cycleway is already finished. Also complete is the northern most section, along Main North Rd, from the bridge over Styx River to Northwood Boulevard. “We’re very excited to get this work under way, as it will link up these completed parts to provide a continuous 7.5km cycling route between the central city and Belfast. PHOTO: NEWSLINE “When we begin safety upgrade works on the railway crossings at Tuckers Rd, Sturrocks Rd and Barnes Rd in November 2023, some traffic management will be in place, with plenty of notice given.” The Northern Line shared pathway has been popular with people choosing active modes of transport, such as cycling and walking. A cycle counter positioned on the Northern Line by Fendalton Rd provides a snapshot of its use, recording over 14,000 trips in the month of July and over 210,000 during the last year. Long-term, the next phase of the project will be to complete the southern end of the Northern Line, which will link it to the South Express cycleway. Ellis said it is important they provide a network of interconnected cycleways that make it safer and easier for people to get around. “The Northern Line is already a great example of that, with links to both the Papanui Parallel cycleway and the Uni-Cycle cycleway.” Construction on the Northern Line cycleway began in the late 1990s, with the main section open from 2010. Supporting the use of active transport is part of the Christchurch transport strategic plan. $100k to train a guide dog a big ‘challenge’ • From page 1 It was unlike with the white cane he was using before where he had to process the information it was giving him and make decisions from that. “He is the perfect match. It is that feeling of freedom. For the first time I was able to walk at my own pace, I got matched with a dog who helps bring awareness. He has confidence in new places which in turn gives me confidence to do new things, that is a real important part for me.” Shepherd works at Blind Low Vision NZ as the head of access and awareness, and said there was a three-year wait before he was matched with Ezra as the matching process was quite intense. “My walking speed was tracked so Ezra is matched to my walking speed, I am a bigger guy so I needed a bigger dog who would be able to stop me from walking when necessary. “I also travel for work so Ezra is good in new places and likes meeting new people.” He said it takes about $100,000 to train a guide dog, which is one of the main challenges. “It is why we need campaigns Pawgust to put dogs in the community. The dogs go through a 19-week training programme before a final test which only two out of six dogs’ pass.
