Courtesy of Destination Vancouver/Kindred & Scout British Columbia is home to 204 Indigenous communities and more than 30 Indigenous languages. By bringing people together and sharing the true stories of BC, the tourism and hospitality industry can play an integral role in lasting, meaningful reconciliation while building stronger connections with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and culture. “It is about being respectful of the land we’re on and the history of Canada. It is also about providing an inclusive experience and being inclusive in our communities,” says Brian Pilbeam, Chief Operating Officer of Invictus Properties Inc. whose portfolio includes the Delta Hotels Kamloops. Indigenous tourism and cultural experiences are also something visitors want. Prior to the pandemic, Indigenous tourism was the fastest-growing sector of the tourism industry and generated $705 million in gross domestic output and created 7,400 full-time jobs. According to Destination BC, one in four visitors to BC actively seek authentic Indigenous experiences. How to Get Started Get up to speed. Educate yourself on reconciliation and understand what your work with Indigenous groups may look like. Begin by familiarizing yourself with important documents that include the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, and BC Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. You can also refer to resources from Indigenous Tourism BC (ITBC) and Destination BC. ITBC is dedicated to raising awareness of the diverse and enriching Indigenous tourism experiences available in BC. The non-profit organization communicates directly with consumers, travel trade, and travel media creating interest in Indigenous tourism experiences, activities, and products. Destination BC partners with ITBC and upholds the UNDRIP, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the Declaration Act Action Plan. <strong>InnFocus</strong> 21
