Sumner wraps up successful season<br />

SUMNER’S SENIOR prizegiving<br />

belonged to the Wave,<br />

with the club’s premier side<br />

taking out the big awards<br />

at Friday night’s end of<br />

season event.<br />

First-year coach Gareth<br />

D’almeida took home the Lloyd<br />

Douglas Trophy for senior coach<br />

of the year for his efforts leading<br />

the Wave.<br />

D’almedia had previously<br />

tasted success with Sumner’s<br />

colts side in 2020 and 2021, and<br />

guided the Wave to playoffs for<br />

just the second time in the team’s<br />

history.<br />

As a result, the Wave also took<br />

out the Shagged Rock Trophy for<br />

senior team of the year.<br />

The team finished the season<br />

with nine wins and five losses – a<br />

massive improvement on last<br />

year’s three wins.<br />

The Storm colts were also<br />

successful, narrowly missing<br />

out on their fourth consecutive<br />

Metropolitan Colts Trophy final<br />

with a 11-8 loss to Shirley two<br />

weeks ago.<br />

Wave No 8 Conner van<br />

Turnhout was awarded the Fat<br />

Boy Trophy for being the club’s<br />

best and fairest player, while<br />

Wave captain Tom Ziolo secured<br />

the Robbie Timo Trophy.<br />

Hooker Jack Jones was once<br />

again the top scorer for the club,<br />

after winning the award last year.<br />

Terrence Graham was rewarded<br />

for his consistent efforts with the<br />

Phil Laloli Trophy for the Wave’s<br />

most valuable player. Graham<br />

predominantly featured at first<br />

five but also slotted in at fullback.<br />

He and lock Josh Loader were<br />

Sumner’s only representatives<br />

in Canterbury B’s clash against<br />

Southland B on Sunday.<br />

Promising flanker Mitch Shaw<br />

was awarded the Scott Robertson<br />

Trophy for most valuable player in<br />
