Sumner wraps up successful season
• By Jaime Cunningham
SUMNER’S SENIOR prizegiving
belonged to the Wave,
with the club’s premier side
taking out the big awards
at Friday night’s end of
season event.
First-year coach Gareth
D’almeida took home the Lloyd
Douglas Trophy for senior coach
of the year for his efforts leading
the Wave.
D’almedia had previously
tasted success with Sumner’s
colts side in 2020 and 2021, and
guided the Wave to playoffs for
just the second time in the team’s
history.
As a result, the Wave also took
out the Shagged Rock Trophy for
senior team of the year.
The team finished the season
with nine wins and five losses – a
massive improvement on last
year’s three wins.
The Storm colts were also
successful, narrowly missing
out on their fourth consecutive
Metropolitan Colts Trophy final
with a 11-8 loss to Shirley two
weeks ago.
Wave No 8 Conner van
Turnhout was awarded the Fat
Boy Trophy for being the club’s
best and fairest player, while
Wave captain Tom Ziolo secured
the Robbie Timo Trophy.
Hooker Jack Jones was once
again the top scorer for the club,
after winning the award last year.
Terrence Graham was rewarded
for his consistent efforts with the
Phil Laloli Trophy for the Wave’s
most valuable player. Graham
predominantly featured at first
five but also slotted in at fullback.
He and lock Josh Loader were
Sumner’s only representatives
in Canterbury B’s clash against
Southland B on Sunday.
Promising flanker Mitch Shaw
was awarded the Scott Robertson
Trophy for most valuable player in
