Keeping clocks<br />
and watches in<br />

While digital timekeeping has become<br />
more widely used in modern society, it<br />
seems many people still have a traditional<br />
grandfather clock in their home, as Geoff<br />
of Ilam Watchmakers is finding.<br />
Increasingly over recent months he<br />
has been called out to repair these stately<br />
timepieces. For small repairs, he says, the<br />
job can be done on-site, and for more<br />
complicated repair work, the clocks are<br />
taken to the workshop.<br />
Geoff and his wife Michelle have owned<br />
and operated the Waimairi Road business<br />
for 22 years, offering not only clock<br />
and watch repairs but also an extensive<br />
selection of new watches and clocks for<br />
sale. Staff in the busy workshop range from<br />
technicians to fully qualified watchmakers,<br />
while the admin staff keep things ticking<br />
over efficiently.<br />
As summer approaches Geoff says it is<br />
important for people who wear their watch<br />
in the water to have it pressure tested,<br />
and the gaskets replaced if necessary.<br />
On the retail side, the new range of<br />
watches for summer has been arriving at<br />
Ilam Watchmakers, and includes stylish<br />
designs from well-known brands like<br />
Citizen, Ice, Lorus, Casio and Boccia.<br />
For those who prefer a more nostalgic<br />
style of watch, there is also a good<br />
selection of refurbished watches,<br />
including pocket watches. Alternatively,<br />
customers can enquire about trading in<br />
their old watch on a new model.<br />
Since its establishment more than two<br />
decades ago, Ilam Watchmakers has always<br />
been located in the block of shops on the<br />
corner of Waimairi Rd and Maidstone Rd,<br />
which Geoff and Michelle believe is the<br />
ideal position.<br />
The store is open Monday to Friday<br />
8am-5.30pm and Saturday 9am-1pm.<br />
