Go early, go often is an advertising catchphrase I
remember from my childhood, and I definitely
have applied it to trips to New Orleans.
The Big Easy is a great getaway at any time of year,
with an over-the-top celebration of St. Patrick’s Day
(Irish immigrants built many of the city’s levies), big
time fun on New Year’s Eve, and the spring brings its
world-famous jazz festival. Yet, nothing beats a visit
to NOLA during Mardi Gras season; and, yes, it is a
season. Mardi Gras starts the first Saturday after the
new year with King Day and the first parades. The
festivities continue through Mardi Gras proper six
weeks later.
Planning your visit to the Crescent City (a nickname
recognizing its location at a bend in the Mississippi
River) earlier during Mardi Gras season can help
to maximize your experience while minimizing

expenses. Mardi Gras usually runs mid-February
to early-March, making the weather variable, so
being prepared and dressing in layers is helpful.
Accommodation is less expensive and easier to find,
restaurant lines are shorter, and crowds at parades
are a bit better.
Parades
To get an overview of the parade schedule,
Tourism New Orleans has a great website at www.
mardigrasneworleans.com/parades. There are
descriptions of each type of parade, as not all are
what you might expect. There are versions featuring
pets, kids and tiny floats (built in shoe boxes). Some
are tilted toward an adults-only crowd with explicit
content, while others are family friendly. Explanations
of each parade’s Krewes (organizers), themes and
histories are available on the website. While some
