Teen golfer
impresses at
age group
champs

COOPER MOORE came
close to retaining his under-16
title at the national age group
championships.
THe Clearwater golfer’s first
round 67 at the Timaru Golf Club
last week saw him take a two-shot
lead over Ryan Xie (Remuera)
who played at the NZ Open
this year. Moore’s
second round 71
saw him trail Xie
(68) by one shot
going into the final.
Standing on the

Moore
14th tee, Moore
was still a shot behind.
He then got
into trouble with a triple bogey.
But a birdie on 18 and a 73 score
left him three shots behind Xie.
Russley’s Yuki Miya got off to
great start with 69 in the under-19
section. But 74 and 76 dropped
him to a tie for sixth. Phong
Nguyen (Russley) finished 11th
with 74, 75 and 74.
Vanessa Lim (Russley) claimed
eighth in the under-16 girls with
78, 79 and 79, while Alisia Ren
(Russley) was 10th in a strong
under-19 field.

Back-to-back basketball titles

ST ANDREW’S College’s
senior A girls basketball team
have qualified for next month’s
nationals after winning back-toback
AA premier schools South
Island titles.
They met rivals Rangiora
High in the final of the threeday
tournament at Dunedin,
winning 73-54. It came a week
after the two teams faced off in
the Canterbury secondary
schools final – which St Andrew’s
also won.
Year 13 student Lauren
Whittaker was once again
immense for St Andrew’s in a
final, scoring 20 points.
St Andrew’s progressed to the
South Island final after dominant
wins over Nayland College
(90-22) and Avonside Girls’
High (85-33) in pool play. They
beat Columba College 75-58 in
the quarter-final before beating
Kaiapoi High 82-41 in their
semi-final.
St Margaret’s College also
secured a spot at nationals,
which takes place in Palmerston
North from September 25-30,
after finishing third. They beat
Kaiapoi 82-64 in the third-place
playoff following a 65-48 loss to
Rangiora.
Christchurch Girls’ High lost
83-66 to Columba in the playoff
for fifth, but sixth-place nabbed
them a spot at nationals.
In the boys’ tournament,
Christ’s College came up short
in the final against Waimea
College, losing 74-67. It followed
their thrilling 82-81 semi-final
win against St Thomas of Canterbury
College. The two teams
also met in the Canterbury final
a week before.
