Bidding
war over
quake
damaged
home
• By Nikki Preston
AN UNINSURED Casebrook
home that needs earthquake
repairs has sold under the hammer
for $597,000, stunning both the
trustees and agents.
Half a dozen property traders
battled it out for the threebedroom,
one-bathroom home
on Glenmore Ave
at the Harcourts
Gold auction, with
the eventual sale
price exceeding the
property’s RV of
$580,000.
Harcourts Gold
agent Debbie Soper
said the auction was
a “cracker”.
Debbie
Soper
“For an ‘as is, where is’ in
Casebrook, which we all sort of saw
as being in the $400,000s, $597,000
was just nuts,” she said.
The bidding opened at $220,000,
but most had dropped out by the
time it reached the high $400,000s,
she said.
The auctioneer announced the
property as being on the market
at $500,000 and, by the time the
bidding reached $540,000, there
were just two buyers left.
“Two people were really, really
fighting it out and trying to get rid
of the other one, and they both just
hung in there as long as they could
and the underbidder just couldn’t.”
Traffic calming measures
unveiled for Flockton St
Specialist pool
over the line
with 400k grant
SAFE SPEED platforms and
a new road surface are being
proposed to help manage
increased traffic since the
opening of the Northern
Corridor.
Feedback has opened on
plans to install traffic calming
measures on Flockton St and
Francis Ave which have both
been impacted by additional use
since the motorway opened in
2020.
Safe speed platforms at 70
metre intervals have been
proposed, with seven to be
installed on Flockton St and five
on Francis Ave, to encourage
reduced and consistent speeds
along the road.
Transport planning and
delivery manager Jacob Bradbury
said they have heard a lot of
feedback from residents on
Flockton St.
“They said that they were
experiencing vibrations, so to
mitigate this we’ve decided to
also include resurfacing for that
street which will reduce these
vibrations in the long term,”
Bradbury said.
The plans were developed
following feedback and data
collected during trials set up
last year.
Temporary raised speed humps
and one- and two-way chicanes
were installed on Flockton St,
while speed humps and road
narrowing were installed on
Francis Ave.
Bradbury said they considered
all sorts of other traffic calming
measures when working on
their proposed designs including
chicanes, road narrowings, a
cul-de-sac, left-in left-out, and
reopening Forfar St.
“However, when these options
were assessed against our specific
criteria, looking at how much
they affected vehicle speeds and
volumes, our wider transport
network and other transport
modes, the proposals we’re
putting forward are the most
suitable overall.”
• The full plans can be
THE MATATIKI Hornby Centre
has received a $400,000 grant
from New Zealand Community
Trust.
The grant will enable the
completion of a hydrotherapy
pool at the centre which is set
to open in early next year and
will also include a library and
customer service hub, as well
as an aquatic centre with a lane
pool, spa pool, toddlers’ wet play
area and learn-to-swim pool.
The city council agreed to
provide $2.5 million for the
hydrotherapy pool, with the
balance of $1.4 million currently
being raised by the Hornby
Rotary Club and the Greater
Hornby Residents Association.
Hydrotherapy involves the
use of warm water for pain
relief, relaxation and a range
of treatments. The water
temperature is usually between
33-36°C, warmer than swimming
pools which are typically kept at
26-28°C.
Around the site, the brick work
for the pool changing rooms and
plant room have been progressing
steadily and will be completed in
the next few weeks.
Elmwood’s time
capsule show
ELMWOOD NORMAL School
pupils performed their original
production detailing the story
around the new buildings being
built at the school.
The Time Capsule was written
by teacher Jeni McKinnon and
was on the stage at the Town Hall
on August 24.
The pupils helped tell the story
of how when the junior school
buildings at the school were demolished
there was no time capsule
to be found, even though the
buildings would have been about
100 years old and how a group
of school councillors decide that
the new school buildings should
have one.
They decided that they would
like to focus on positive happenings
and looked at how Christchurch
been rebuilt since the
earthquakes. Each one of them
chose a place they treasured in
the city to showcase, and this was
done through dance and song by
each year-group.
The places they treasure within
the city included the botanical
gardens, the beaches and waterways,
the Tūranga library, Te
Pae, Te Kaha Canterbury Multi-
Use Arena, Parakiore Recreation
PERFORMANCE: Pupils of Elmwood performed songs
including ‘Let it Grow’ and ‘Hold Back the River’ that focused
on the botanic gardens and the waterways in the city.
and Sports Centre and outdoor
areas such as the Port Hills, biking
in the adventure park and
Bottle Lake Forest.
The new buildings are still
being built and the first block
is due to finish mid-next year.
The second block is due to finish
early 2025.
It was a whole school production
with about 1250 tickets sold
and the school received many
emails from parents thanking
the staff for the show.
It was a big team effort, and the
production was hugely successful.
A lot of people enjoyed it and the
school wanted to say a big thank
you to everyone who helped bring
it together.
DWELLING: The house sits on a large 1123sq m section,
which helped to draw in buyers.
Auction ‘just
•From page 1
“It got to the stage where it just
didn’t make sense,” said Soper.
The property was located
down a long shared driveway,
making access to the large
1123sq m section tricky, she
said.
It was in “original and raw”
condition and even the toilet
seat was missing.
Some wanted to do up
the property and resell it,
while others saw potential in
developing the land or adding a
second dwelling.
One bidder only viewed the
property minutes before the
auction and entered the room
just as the bidding kicked off.
“Not everybody wanted to
develop that section either, most
people were looking to repair
the house, update it, and put it
back on the market.
“But the margin will be pretty
slim to do that at that level, so
you’ve got to make the section
work really.”
The trustees who put the
property on the market after the
elderly owner moved into a rest
home three months ago were at
the auction.
Said Soper: “The trustees
could tell this was insane . . .
they held their poker faces really
well.”
in September
Warmer months are just around the corner
That means gardens need to be prepared, repairs and maintenance planned, and spring
cleaning started.
Here at Summerset on Cavendish in Casebrook, we’re busy getting the village ready too.
But our residents don’t need to lift a finger, as we take care of the chores, leaving them to
spend their days how best they wish. Although some do still love to look after their gardens
of course.
If you’ve ever been curious about village life with fewer chores, now could be the time. We’re
holding an Open Day every Thursday in September between 10am and 2pm, so you can get
a taste of the Summerset life that our residents love so much.
St Margaret’s qualify for nationals
after South Island schools final
FOCUS: St Margaret’s centre Ellese Haigh keeps her eyes
on the target in their 51-27 win over Otago Girls’ High.
Below – St Andrew’s College’s Sienna Stowers-Smith
fires a pass.
• By Jaime Cunningham
AN EXTRA-TIME thriller saw
St Margaret’s College go down to
Columba College in the South Island
secondary schools netball final.
St Margaret’s had a dominant
tournament in Invercargill and have
now qualified for the New Zealand
secondary schools tournament
in Auckland, which starts on
October 3, after the 30-28
loss. Christchurch Girls’
High (third), St Andrew’s
College (fourth) and Villa
Maria College (fifth) also
clinched spots at next
month’s New Zealand
tournament by finishing in
the top five.
But for St Margaret’s, who were
last year’s national finalists, the final
loss was a disappointing end to the
tournament.
They recorded an impressive 307
goals across their first six games while
conceding just 133.
St Margaret’s met rivals St Andrew’s
in their third playoff match in two
weeks in the semi-final, which the redand-whites
won 43-31.
St Margaret’s looked like winning
the final last Thursday after taking a
13-5 lead in the first quarter.
Goal attack Ivy Brown was a standout,
injecting energy on attack and
defence in the first half.
Despite a number of opportunities
for Columba, St Margaret’s managed
to hold on to a 19-14 lead at halftime.
Clean intercepts gained them plenty
of turnovers on defence, but unforced
errors saw St Margaret’s take 2min to
get their first goal of the third period.
St Margaret’s had possibly their
lowest quarter score of the season with
just six goals.
But for much of the final quarter, St
Margaret’s held onto their slim lead.
Then Columba soared to a 28-27
lead with 36sec to go on the clock.
St Margaret’s were able to keep their
cool, with Brown netting a goal to
even the match. But it wasn’t to be for
St Margaret’s in extra-time. They were
unable to add to their score, while
Columba went in front by two for the
first time in the game.
Meanwhile, CGHS faced St Andrew’s
to decide third place.
CGHS were reeling from a 44-17
loss to Columba, and came out firing
to finish
third with a 35-30
win. The last spot at
nationals went to Villa
Maria, who beat Southland
Girls’ 33-32 in a thrilling
fifth place playoff. The four
Christchurch sides now turn
their focus to the national tournament
at Trust Arena, Auckland,
which starts on October 3.
This model-sharing arrangement
between two of the heavy
hitters of the car world, one hailing
from North America and the
other Europe, is an interesting
alliance and precursor to other
models expected to spawn.
Unlike the current all conquering
third generation Ranger
current armed with something
for everyone; a 15 strong line-up,
comprising 2WD and 4WD versions,
and the choice of single,
super, and double cab body
styles. By contrast the Amarok
is more of niche market dabbler
operating off the back of a modest
four-model line-up, all double
cabs and 4WD. Prices start at
$65,000 for the Life and peak
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
at $90,000 for the Aventura V6
turbo diesel.
Even the price leading $65,000
Life is an attractive package,
powered, albeit meekly, by a 2.0L
125kW turbo diesel that develops
405Nm of torque and is hitched
to a 6-speed automatic. There
are high expectations in the
Volkswagen camp around the
$75,000 Style with a 2.0L 154kW
500Nm diesel engine plucked
straight from the Ford Ranger
parts bin. It’s nicely appointed
with 18” alloy wheels, LED Matrix
headlights, 12” touchscreen
infotainment, ambient lighting,
and keyless entry and remote
start. There’s a nice bonus for all
Amarok owners in the form of
a standard across-the-range tow
bar.
The high spec $88,000 Amarok
Pan Americana being reviewed
here has a stronger off road bias.
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
If you need a large combative and
capable Ute in most terrains, this
one fits the bill with its beefy 3.0L
184kW 600NmV6 diesel. Features
include exclusive black 18"
alloy wheels shod with all-terrain
tyres, and heated leather seats.
The driving assistance package
offers, among other things, park
assist and intelligent adaptive
cruise control.
The sophisticated, confident
urban-orientated Aventura that
shares the turbo V6 diesel is an
attention grabber with 20" alloy
wheels, exterior chrome styling
accents and body-coloured sports
bar.
The Pan Americana packs
plenty of punch with a muscular
3.0L 184kW V6 turbo diesel
packing a mighty 600Nm of
torque, but it isn’t squeaky green
enough to dodge the government’s
maximum $6,900 clean
vehicle fee.
The V6 turbo diesel lifts the
performance bar for its class to
new lofty heights, with a clever
bypass set-up for power which allows
the turbochargers to work at
lower engine speeds for increased
responsiveness. Alternatively the
smaller turbo can be bypassed allowing
the larger one to blow into
action to deliver greater power.
This is just some of the back
room technical magic that conjures
up such an ultra smooth
and responsive motor delivering
a memorable on and off road
driving experience. Whatever
is thrown its way is dealt with
effortlessly like few other diesel
Utes I’ve driven. The 10-speed
automatic is the perfect match for
this strong and more vibrant V6,
with its quick and intuitive gear
changes.
The well-appointed and finished
passenger compartment is
noticeably larger than its aging
predecessor, with the biggest,
and soon to be most appreciated,
improvement is the amount of
additional rear leg and headroom.
There’s a classy, modern
and quality European feel that
permeates into almost every
corner of the test Ute. This gives
the Volkswagen an important
point of difference over its blue
oval-badged sibling.
The way this sizeable Ute glides
through corners with poise and
balance is a credit to the team
who designed and developed it.
Ride comfort is outstanding both
on road and off the beaten track.
During my limited and less than
intrepid off-road excursions, the
test vehicle was surprisingly at
ease and took every opportunity
to show off its formidable 4WD
abilities. This is a more than worthy
replacement for the outgoing
Amarok. It’s a huge step forward,
thanks to Ford.
Rating out of 10: Performance 8, Handling 8, Build
Quality 7, Comfort 7, Passenger and Load Space 8, Avg
consumption on road test 11.6L/100km, Value for money 7,
Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating, clean car fee $6,900.
Overall points out of 10: 8
