Elmwood’s time<br />
capsule show<br />
ELMWOOD NORMAL School<br />
pupils performed their original<br />
production detailing the story<br />
around the new buildings being<br />
built at the school.<br />
The Time Capsule was written<br />
by teacher Jeni McKinnon and<br />
was on the stage at the Town Hall<br />
on August 24.<br />
The pupils helped tell the story<br />
of how when the junior school<br />
buildings at the school were demolished<br />
there was no time capsule<br />
to be found, even though the<br />
buildings would have been about<br />
100 years old and how a group<br />
of school councillors decide that<br />
the new school buildings should<br />
have one.<br />
They decided that they would<br />
like to focus on positive happenings<br />
and looked at how Christchurch<br />
been rebuilt since the<br />
earthquakes. Each one of them<br />
chose a place they treasured in<br />
the city to showcase, and this was<br />
done through dance and song by<br />
each year-group.<br />
The places they treasure within<br />
the city included the botanical<br />
gardens, the beaches and waterways,<br />
the Tūranga library, Te<br />
Pae, Te Kaha Canterbury Multi-<br />
Use Arena, Parakiore Recreation<br />
PERFORMANCE: Pupils of Elmwood performed songs<br />
including ‘Let it Grow’ and ‘Hold Back the River’ that focused<br />
on the botanic gardens and the waterways in the city.<br />
and Sports Centre and outdoor<br />
areas such as the Port Hills, biking<br />
in the adventure park and<br />
Bottle Lake Forest.<br />
The new buildings are still<br />
being built and the first block<br />
is due to finish mid-next year.<br />
The second block is due to finish<br />
early 2025.<br />
It was a whole school production<br />
with about 1250 tickets sold<br />
and the school received many<br />
emails from parents thanking<br />
the staff for the show.<br />
It was a big team effort, and the<br />
production was hugely successful.<br />
A lot of people enjoyed it and the<br />
school wanted to say a big thank<br />
you to everyone who helped bring<br />
it together.<br />

“It got to the stage where it just<br />
didn’t make sense,” said Soper.<br />
The property was located<br />
down a long shared driveway,<br />
making access to the large<br />
1123sq m section tricky, she<br />
said.<br />
It was in “original and raw”<br />
condition and even the toilet<br />
seat was missing.<br />
Some wanted to do up<br />
the property and resell it,<br />
while others saw potential in<br />
developing the land or adding a<br />
second dwelling.<br />
One bidder only viewed the<br />
property minutes before the<br />
auction and entered the room<br />
just as the bidding kicked off.<br />
“Not everybody wanted to<br />
develop that section either, most<br />
people were looking to repair<br />
the house, update it, and put it<br />
back on the market.<br />
“But the margin will be pretty<br />
slim to do that at that level, so<br />
you’ve got to make the section<br />
work really.”<br />
The trustees who put the<br />
property on the market after the<br />
elderly owner moved into a rest<br />
home three months ago were at<br />
the auction.<br />
Said Soper: “The trustees<br />
could tell this was insane . . .<br />
they held their poker faces really<br />
well.”<br />
