A KĀINGA Ora resident has 

been accused of “depraved” and 

“hideous” behaviour after he had 

sex in his backyard – in full view of 

a group of high school students next 

door. 

The incident is the latest in a series 

of the man’s alleged anti-social 

behaviour at the Islay Pl, Woolston, 

property. 

A neighbour and mother said: 

“I’m quite disgusted in the fact that 

kids have seen this. [One of the kids] 

says he can’t get it out of his head.” 

She complained to police. But a 

spokeswoman said police “determined 

no offence had been committed”, 

frustrating the neighbour. 

Another neighbour complained to 

Kāinga Ora, wanting the state housing 

agency to kick the resident out, 

saying the children were traumatised 

seeing the “depraved, hideous 

behaviour”. 

Kāinga Ora Canterbury regional 

director Liz Krause said it was aware 

of a situation “in the private, fenced 

backyard of one our . . . properties 

observed by a group of teenagers 

next door”.

Mauger’s comments come 

as the council moves closer to 

considering asset sales later this 

year. It is also a U-turn from 

Mauger who during last year’s 

election campaign said he would 

not sell assets. He had promised 

a rates rise of about 4 per cent 

during his election campaign. 

But the council approved a 6.4 

per cent rise in June. 

The city council owns 100 per 

cent of the port company, City 

Care, fibre broadband provider 

Enable and Eco-Central, 75 

per cent of the airport, and 89 

per cent of Orion through its 

company Christchurch City 

Holdings Ltd. 

Over the past 30 years, the 

assets have returned almost 

$2 billion to ratepayers. But a 

report by investment bank and 

corporate advisory business 

Northington Partners last year 

found it could have been more. 

City councillors voted 10-7 

late last year to develop detailed 

business cases looking at the 

costs and benefits of partially 

selling off its assets.

SELLING OFF part or all of 

ratepayer assets like the Lyttelton 

Port Company appears to be 

firmly in the sights of right 

leaning city councillors and 

Mayor Phil Mauger. 

Mauger said this week he 

believes the city council will have 

to sell some of its assets to off set 

rates increases in the future.

think of the idea?

MAVIS MANNALL is proving 

age is just a number as she 

continues to go to the gym at 94. 

Mavis has been going to the 

gym for about 20 years and is 

a member of the Papanui Club 

Ignite Fitness Gym. 

She said she has always been 

very active, being involved with 

basketball and swimming when 

she was younger. 

“I have just always loved 

exercise, I have always kept fit 

throughout my life,” she said. 

Mavis said she does not drive 

anymore. She only stopped two 

years ago but 

gets other 

people to pick 

her up to bring 

her to the 

gym. 

“I pay them 

to pick me 

up, bring me 

to the gym

cuppa as well and have a bit of 

socialising.”

down to make 

sure that she is able to do them

“That’s the big thing. She 

does things that a lot of other 

people and a lot of younger 

members don’t. She pushes more 

weight. She’s just really focused 

and determined and quite 

inspirational.” 

Mavis said she does not have a 

particular favourite exercise; she 

tries to do five minutes on each 

for about an hour to an hour 

and a half, but she does have an 

exercise she loathes. 

“The box. You put the weights 

in the box and then you push the 

box 

along 

the carpet. I do it 

about eight times. 

Nobody likes doing 

the box.” 

Mavis said that the 

secret to longevity is to 

have a good sense of 

humor, be kind, learn 

to compromise and 

lastly to not mess 

with Mavis. 

“My mummy used to say don’t 

tell me you can’t do it, just get 

on and do it. That’s how I was 

brought up. Don’t think about it, 

just do it.”

Police search new areas for 

missing real estate agent

POLICE INVESTIGATING the 

suspected murder of missing 

real estate agent Yanfei Bao are 

searching new areas in relation 

to her disappearance. 

Bao was last seen alive on July 

19, when she arrived at a house 

for sale on Trevor St, Hornby, 

set to show a potential buyer 

through it. 

A week later, her disappearance 

was upgraded to a homicide 

investigation. 

Last week her alleged murderer, 

Tinjun Cao, was named after

he did not apply to continue his 

interim name suppression. 

Yesterday, police said they 

were now searching in new 

areas. 

The areas include Waterholes 

Rd and Robinsons Rd, Rolleston, 

and Spalling Rd and Te Kuru 

Wetland, Halswell. 

“Staff will not be searching the 

Greenpark area (yesterday) but 

future activity is being considered 

in that area.” 

The officer in charge of the investigation, 

Detective Inspector 

Nicola Reeves, said the locations 

were identified through “investigative 

work and information 

from the public”. 

Cao appeared in the High 

Court at Christchurch on Friday 

via audio-visual link before 

Justice Cameron Mander. Cao’s 

lawyer said he no longer sought 

interim name suppression. 

A tentative trial date has been 

set for October 21, 2024, for four 

weeks. 

The 52-year-old Bryndwr man 

had only been living in New 

Zealand for several months. 

Cao was remanded in custody 

to appear again on November 

10. 

At his previous appearance, he 

pleaded not guilty to the charge 

of murder. He pleaded not guilty 

to kidnapping at his first court 

appearance. The not guilty pleas 

were confirmed on Friday. 

Police have appeared to focus 

their efforts on the Halswell 

River and Greenpark area using 

search experts over ground, 

water, and in the sky. 

Police investigating Bao’s 

disappearance earlier appealed 

for information from the public 

in relation to a tracksuit, top, 

and spade.

Two youths 

arrested 

after police 

chase, crash 

TWO YOUNG people fled police 

and crashed a car before being 

arrested early yesterday morning. 

Police initiated a pursuit at first, 

but said the chase was abandoned 

due to “the manner of driving”. 

A police spokesperson said 

officers first noticed the vehicle of 

interest near Linwood Ave about 

2.40am. 

Police initially tried to pull the 

car over but the driver did not 

comply and fled. 

The vehicle was found a short 

time later after it was involved 

in a crash at the intersection of 

Anzac Dr and New Brighton Rd. 

One of the young offenders 

suffered moderate injuries in the 

crash, police said. 

They were taken away for 

medical attention. Two people 

will be referred to Youth Services.

“What our customers do 

in their personal lives is not 

something we as a landlord have 

a right to control,” Krause said. 

“Our customers have the same 

rights to privacy as any private 

renter or person living in their 

own home.

tensions between neighbours 

living in the

accused of terrorising neighbours 

in 2021 with a prolonged 

campaign of intimidation and 

abuse. 

The man was accused of 

shooting a kids’ pool with slug 

gun pellets and threatening the 

life of a 4-year-old girl on the 

street. 

Said Krause: “It became 

clear . . . the issues raised were 

historic(al), mostly dating back 

to 2016, and that they were 

addressed by the appropriate 

authorities at the time.” 

The mum’s 17-year-old son 

had his friends over last Friday 

night when her neighbour started 

having sex with another man 

outside. 

“They knew the kids were there 

because they [the kids] were out 

the back making noise,” she said.

Another resident said the man 

“wasn’t even trying to be quiet 

about it”. 

The neighbour said the two 

men looked up and saw the 

teenagers watching them, 

“dumbfounded”, and quickly got 

up and pulled their trousers up. 

“I know it’s their property, but 

hey, come on – in full view?” 

Gledhill said indecent exposure 

is only met if the offender knows 

they can be seen from a public 

place. 

“There is a specific defence 

of having reasonable grounds 

for believing they cannot be 

observed,” he said. 

“It sounds like this man wasn’t 

aware he was being watched, and 

as soon as he became aware, he 

stopped. 

“I’d imagine that the police 

will have decided that this test 

wasn’t made out because the 

man will have been able to prove 

the defence of the prosecution 

would have difficulty in proving 

that he acted ‘intentionally and 

obscenely’. 

“A further complication might 

be that kids in a private garden 

next door are not in a public 

place – public place means a 

street, park, a shared driveway or 

[somewhere] public are entitled 

to go,” Gledhill said. 

In 2021, Kāinga Ora said it 

was aware of “historic[al] issues” 

at the property involving police 

and “concerns about illegal 

behaviour”. 

Neighbours said swastikas were 

painted on the street and claim 

the man was seen giving the Nazi 

salute and celebrating the mosque 

terror attacks.

were ordered to “get somewhere 

safe” and “get 

down on the 

floor” when 

armed offenders 

squad members 

stormed the 

property in 

2020, dragging 

the man from Kris Gledhill 

his home after 

reports of a firearm. 

In another incident, a gang 

of youths allegedly smashed 

their way into the state house in 

search of the man, damaging the 

property and breaking windows. 

He escaped by jumping a fence 

into a neighbour’s yard. 

One neighbour claims he was 

attacked with a pitchfork during 

a street brawl involving people 

associated with the house.

time,” said the neighbour.

Christopher Luxon has promised 

10,000 electric vehicle chargers 

by 2030 if elected. 

He made the announcement 

on the campaign trail in 

Christchurch yesterday. 

Luxon repeated his concern for 

the economy and said that New 

Zealand is the only country in 

the Asia-Pacific region that is in 

a recession. 

He was shocked, he said, 

by Labour leader Chris 

Hipkins’ claim the economic 

fundamentals are in great shape. 

“Kiwis up and down this 

country are doing it incredibly 

tough. They are experiencing a 

cost-of-living crisis that is going 

on and on . . .” 

He said National has the 

economic plan to get the 

economy moving again. 

As part of rebuilding the 

economy, infrastructure needs to 

be improved, Luxon said. 

More investment in the 

transport sector will be 

accelerating the transition to 

electric vehicles, including the 

supporting infrastructure. 

New Zealand is the worst 

in the OECD in the area, with 

Luxon saying at present, the 

country only has one public 

charger per 95 EVs, where in the 

UK, there is one public charger 

per 20 EVs. 

“That’s where we need to be 

heading,” said Luxon. 

Motorists were concerned over 

being able to get to where they 

wanted to be in an EV – and it 

was a barrier to people buying 

them. 

Luxon referred to it as “range 

anxiety for electric vehicles”. 

To combat that, National want 

to invest in a network and deliver 

10,000 chargers that will be in 

place by 2030. 

Luxon said $257 million will 

be spent on the chargers. The 

ultra-fast broadband model will 

be revived, so the government 

would work with businesses to 

deliver it.

cheap and freely available”.

THE ACT Party says it will 

prioritise four sectors for red 

tape cutting if it is part of the 

Government after October. 

Leader David Seymour said 

yesterday a new minister of 

regulation would be tasked 

with investigating and advising 

on red tape cuts and ministers 

would then be required to either 

make the cuts or publicly explain 

why not. 

The sectors subject to the “red 

tape review” would be early 

childhood education, the health 

workforce, primary industries, 

and financial services, he said. 

“Early childhood education 

faces a host of regulations aimed 

at protecting the safety and wellbeing 

of children and improving 

the quality of education. However, 

not all regulations are made 

equally,” said Seymour. 

“Over-regulation is hurting 

the sector. We need to get the 

regulations right. 

“ACT has heard from the aged 

care sector that international 

nurses struggle to meet the 

language requirements in 

the competence assessment 

programme, despite them 

possessing better written and 

oral language communication 

than most Kiwis.”

A MAN who bit and strangled 

his partner also told her he 

would tie her up and chop her 

into pieces, claiming she was

jailed for three years and 10 

months for the attack, which 

started when his partner 

suggested he get a job. 

He claimed it was self-defence 

but attacked her several times 

during the day and wouldn’t let 

her leave the house until the next 

morning. 

Marsters was charged 

with assault with intent to 

injure, injuring with intent to 

injure, assault with a weapon, 

a representative charge of 

impeding breathing and 

another representative charge of 

threatening to kill. 

On July 30 at 2pm, the pair 

were talking about their future 

goals when she suggested he get 

a job to help pay the bills, as she 

was the only one providing for 

the family. 

Marsters became furious and 

began yelling at her, claiming 

he had a “grand plan” and the 

benefit was enough to support 

both of them. 

She tried to calm him 

down and, when that didn’t 

work, threw a book at him in 

frustration. 

Marsters jumped on the 

woman, grabbing her hair and 

ripping it out. He then put his 

elbow on her throat, preventing 

her from breathing. 

As she tried to push him off 

with her free hand, Marsters 

began biting her hand. She began 

to cry, pleading with him, saying 

she was sorry and loved him. 

Marsters put both of his hands 

around her throat and began 

squeezing, telling her: “I’m going 

to kill you.” 

The woman struggled to 

breathe for about a minute and 

began to lose consciousness. She 

managed to roll on her side and

began pleading with Marsters. 

He told her she was now “in 

isolation” – she wasn’t allowed to 

leave the house and he took her 

phone off her. 

About 9pm Marsters began 

placing wooden boards on the 

door, and told her she wasn’t 

allowed to go to her evening job. 

He gave her phone back so she 

could tell her work she wasn’t 

going in and could message her 

children. He then took it off her 

again and confined her to the 

bedroom area of the house. 

About midnight, he began 

yelling at her and grabbed a 

chopping board knife.

next to her. She asked if she was 

allowed to leave as she needed 

to pick up her children, which 

he agreed to. She took her phone 

and keys and left. 

She suffered bruising and 

swelling and had two lumps on 

her head as well as bite marks on 

her hand. 

In sentencing Marsters, Judge 

Raoul Neave said he grew up 

in an environment where he 

observed domestic violence 

and ended up in state-run 

institutions.

MORE THAN 1000 people have 

joined a support group for triple 

child murderer Lauren Anne 

Dickason and are planning to 

protest a month before she is 

sentenced to life in prison for 

killing her three little girls. 

Last month, following a fiveweek 

trial, the 42-year-old was 

found guilty of murdering Liané, 

6, and 2-year-old twins Maya and 

Karlaat. 

Dickason systematically smothered 

the children to death – just 

weeks after emigrating to New 

Zealand from South Africa – after 

an unsuccessful attempt at strangling 

each of them with cable ties. 

Dickason will be sentenced at 

the High Court in Christchurch 

on December 19. 

Since the verdicts, more than 

1000 people – mostly women 

– have joined a Facebook page 

supporting the murderer.

was created in July 2022 and it is 

understood the killer’s father is 

among the members.

related to organising a protest

Danny and Roberto Jaz have 

been transferred to a different 

prison amid concerns for their 

safety. 

Danny and Roberto Jaz were 

sentenced to 16 and a half and 

17 year prison terms respectively 

last month after they were 

convicted of 69 charges between 

them including rape, sexual 

violation, indecent assault, 

stupefying, disabling, making 

intimate recordings of women 

without their knowledge or 

consent and supplying illicit 

drugs. 

The brothers – described 

repeatedly by police and the 

sentencing judge as “predatory” 

– were behind a long-running 

campaign of drink spiking and 

sexual assaults at central city 

bar Mama Hooch and nearby 

restaurant Venuti. 

The bar and restaurant were 

both owned by their father 

Michael Jaz. Jaz Holdings was 

put into liquidation on August 4. 

The first report from the Official 

Assignee, who was appointed as 

liquidator, lists debts of $235,540. 

It is understood Michael Jaz is 

now in Australia.

The transfer was due to 

concerns for their safety. 

In May the NZ Herald revealed 

Roberto Jaz had been assaulted 

in prison. 

The attack came days after his 

five-year name suppression 

order lapsed. 

When the siblings were 

sentenced last month Danny Jaz 

sported a black eye and appeared 

to have a recent nose injury. 

The Department of 

Corrections would not be 

drawn on the Jaz brothers’ 

imprisonment. 

“Our number one priority is 

the safety of the public, our staff

“For operational safety and 

security reasons and due to our 

obligations under the Privacy 

Act, we do not comment on 

the placement of individual

Baking a great Xmas cake

WHAT IS the secret of making an 

award winning Christmas cake? 

Just ask Christine Beaton who is 

coordinating the Kiwi Christmas 

Cake Competition at the New 

Zealand Agricultural Show in 

November. 

She says the secret is passion and 

learning from mistakes. 

And after 50 years of baking 

Christmas cakes for A&P 

Association competitions in the 

North Canterbury region, she should 

know. 

Beaton says the best cakes are those 

made with love and a close eye on the 

regulations. 

‘‘The golden rule is reading the 

instructions. If it says eight inches 

square (20.32cm²) then it better had 

be, right down to the last millimetre.’’ 

Beaton says she has seen so many 

cakes disqualified simply because the 

creator didn’t read the fine print on 

the judging sheet. 

Eight inches square, an appearance 

with no bumps, hollows or sunken 

centres, an attractive colour that’s 

golden brown, texture that’s firm and 

fine, its flavour and aroma must be 

delicious, plus a perfect blend of fresh

started with her grandmother on the 

family farm at Waipara. 

‘‘Mum was working hard to provide 

for us. After dad had suffered a stroke 

when I was in primary school, mum 

had to step up, so I learned to cook to 

do my part. 

‘‘Nana showed me how to make 

cakes. Over 50 years ago I started 

entering the A&P shows in the 

area, with cakes, biscuits, jams and 

relishes.”

Glide on the peace train ooh-ah, ee-ah 

THE PEACE Train has returned 

to the Botanic Gardens for 

another season with an increased 

timetable. 

The miniature train was 

donated by the Yusuf Islam 

Foundation in early 2021, in 

recognition of the response of 

support and compassion that 

followed the mosque terror 

attacks on March 15, 2019. 

This season, due to popular 

demand, the train will be 

operating every Sunday rather 

than fortnightly. 

Yusuf, previously known by his 

stage name Cat Stevens, gave the 

gift to the city on the condition 

of the train being free to ride for 

the citizens of Christchurch, and 

that it was to run in a central 

location. 

The Peace Train is run by 

volunteers. 

“We have the most wonderful, 

dedicated group of volunteers 

who drive the train, and we’re so 

grateful for their enthusiasm and 

creating such a great experience 

for the public,” a city council 

spokesperson said. 

The train operates from 10am- 

2pm each Sunday, with each 

ride taking about 8 minutes. The 

season runs until April.

Who do we trust in a pandemic? 

A FATHER-DAUGHTER team 

from Canterbury University 

studied data from eight 

countries to rank trust in health 

authorities, media, experts, and 

politicians. 

Political science honours 

student Alexa Schluter is the 

lead author of the paper, ‘In the 

Covid-19 pandemic, who did we 

trust? An eight-country crosssectional 

study’. 

Her father, Professor Philip 

Schluter, head of UC’s school of 

health sciences, supervised her 

research. 

The pair worked with 

clinicians and public health 

researchers in Canada to 

study data from 9000 survey 

participants from Canada, USA, 

England, Switzerland, Belgium, 

Philippines, New Zealand, and 

Hong Kong. The surveys were 

carried out in late 2020. 

In all countries surveyed, 

public trust in health authorities 

was highest. Conversely, public 

trust in politicians ranked lowest 

across the board. 

However, in New Zealand, 

trust in politicians was 

significantly higher than in the 

other countries studied. The 

researchers linked this to data 

from the Global Corruption 

Perception Index that records 

how transparent populations 

believe their governments to be.

The researchers believe their 

paper has added relevance 

within the context of the 

‘infodemic’ identified by the 

World Health Organisation as 

a central challenge during the 

Covid-19 pandemic. 

A combination of 

‘information’ and ‘epidemic’, the 

term describes the rapid 

spread of information, both 

accurate and inaccurate, 

enabled by the internet and 

social media. 

“In this environment, public 

trust becomes an important 

determinant in population 

health outcomes, and that’s 

quite a new idea,” said Professor 

Schluter. 

“These large-scale health 

challenges will continue to 

happen in future, so we really 

need to understand what works 

to foster public trust in health 

interventions.” 

The paper will be published 

in the prestigious international 

Journal of Global Health.

WHEN KERRI Vickery started 

at McDonald’s 15 years ago she 

never thought she’d be one of the 

top managers in the world. 

The McDonald’s Rolleston 

restaurant manager has just been 

awarded a Ray Croc Award, 

something only the top one per 

cent of managers in the world 

receive. 

The award recognises 

managers who lead by example 

NEW RESEARCH from 

Canterbury University using 

AI technology could help 

health professionals provide 

more effective cancer treatment 

strategies and save lives. 

For the last four 

years, Associate Professor 

Alex Gavryushkin from the 

university’s 

biomathematics 

research 

centre has been 

developing 

algorithms 

to analyse 

biological data 

in relation to 

complex genetic

cancer and gout, to help develop 

through their actions and 

behaviours and achieve superior 

business results. 

Vickery started 

as a crew member 

at McDonald’s 

Hillmorton as 

a mum with a 

10-month-old. 

“I started 

working at Kerri Vickery 

McDonald’s 

after I had my daughter because 

treatment strategies based on 

genetics. 

“The classic approach to 

medicine looks at lots of people 

with a particular condition to 

see what treatment works for 

them. However, there are many 

diseases, including cancer, 

which are extremely different 

from person to person despite 

identical symptoms, and the 

same drugs and therapies don’t 

work,” he said. 

“Genomics is the answer to 

that. We develop and train our 

algorithms on genomic as 

well as clinical data to link the 

individual’s condition to what is 

known in biology, medicine and 

clinical trials to come up with 

actionable recommendations, 


I needed some income and it 

worked around family,” Vickery 

said. 

Her daughter Hannah, 16, now 

works at the Rolleston branch. 

Vickery joined Rolleston 

McDonald’s as assistant manager 

when it opened in 2013. 

Franchisee Dave Whalley 

held a dinner for senior 

managers under the guise 

that someone else was getting 

an award, keeping Vickery’s

Gavryushkin said the 

technology would enable health 

professionals to provide more 

effective cancer treatment 

strategies, minimising the 

chance of treatment-resistant 

cells to develop, while also 

making quality care more 

accessible. 

“Our work looks at how to 

prioritise and plan therapeutic 

approaches in a way that 

minimises the chance of 

developing treatment-resistant 

genotypes by steering the 

evolution of cancer away from 

them. 

“If this succeeds, it is 

effectively providing a precision 

accomplishment a secret. 

“After dinner, he announced 

to everyone the big award and I 

cried,” Vickery said. 

Whalley said Vickery has done 

exceptionally well. 

“Being a restaurant manager is 

not a nine to five job.” 

The award is not the first 

accolade she has received. 

Vickery has been the restaurant 

manager since 2019 and in 

that time has been restaurant 

medicine assistant to the 

oncologist. We want to make 

these tools available globally, 

especially in places where 

doctors may not have specialised 

training in genetics, or time 

to go through all the recent 

literature. With modern AI 

technologies, these barriers can 

be eliminated.” 

Gavryushkin is also applying 

the algorithms to gout, another 

complex genetic disease. He 

is specifically looking at big 

data approaches to indigenous 

populations, including Māori 

and Pacifica. Both research 

projects are in collaboration with 

other researchers, and industry 

and clinical experts in New 

Zealand, Switzerland, Spain

Vickery said to be a good

empathy and be willing listen to 

the staff. 

The next step up the ranks she 

is aiming for is to be a franchisee 

of a branch.

“The power of algorithms 

over the last 20 years has been 

remarkable, yet there are still 

areas where it is unbelievable 

that algorithms are not being 

used. 

“I’m very passionate about 

using these technologies to 

make cancer treatment and 

gout treatment equitable. They 

come at relatively low cost 

compared to how deployable 

they are and how widely the 

benefits can be applied – so the 

impact on people’s lives could be 

significant.” 

The next stage will focus on 

engaging with patients and 

doctors. The researchers are 

looking for collaborators.

Tarras airport plan ‘flawed’

last week’s article on 

Christchurch Airport’s 

research into the 

impact its planned 

airport at Tarras, Central 

Otago, will have 

The airport idea is ridiculous 

on many levels, but mainly 

from a financial perspective. 

If proposing a solution to 

increase international visitor 

capacity was centralised at 

a strategic level the logical 

answer is Invercargill Airport. 

Invercargill has the third 

longest civilian runway at 

2100m, behind Auckland 

(3500m) and Christchurch 

(3290m). Invercargill’s 

infrastructure could be 

expanded and the runway 

extended by 900m at a fraction 

of the cost of a new airport. 

Christchurch International 

Airport Ltd’s design of the 

runway length and orientation 

is also flawed. As an airline 

pilot flying for more than 40 

years, I suggest a minimum 

runway length of 3000m (not 

2600m) is more appropriate 

for wide body aircraft taking 

off for long haul destinations. 

The proposed runway

is also problematic with a

predominant westerly, usually

Extending Wanaka’s runway 

by 800m and adding terminal/ 

immigration capacity would 

allow narrow body jet aircraft 

to service New Zealand and 

Australia. All this at less cost 

than a new airport. 

If a third international 

airport is necessary for New 

Zealand within 30 years, 

forget Tarras and expand 

Invercargill, giving tourists a 

true Southland to Auckland 

road trip experience.

Cats eye their second

CLAIMING back-to-back titles 

for the first time in 25 years will 

be on the back of Canterbury 

Cats players’ minds when the 

National Hockey Championship 

gets under way on Sunday. 

Four Canterbury teams will 

contest their grades at the weeklong 

tournament in Hamilton. 

The Cats beat North Harbour 

2-1 to lift the Kirkpatrick Cup at 

the tournament last year. 

Despite their consistency 

in past tournaments, the Cats 

haven’t won two national titles 

in a row since their four-year 

dominance from 1994-1998. 

Cats head coach Andrew 

Hastie said their focus heading 

into the first game won’t be on 

winning the tournament. 

“It’ll be lovely if we can get to 

the final again but it’s more on 

how we can play to get there,” he 

said. 

“We’ll control what we can 

control.” 

The Cats go into the tournament 

on the back of a successful 

Ōtautahi Cup, in which they 

won all three 

games. After 

beating 

national title in a row 

both Wellington and Otago by 

one goal two weeks ago, the Cats 

are set to play them again in the 

round robin stage on Sunday 

and Monday. Hastie said the 

team have analysed the previous 

matches and feel confident. 

“We’ve gone through those 

matches and know what we need 

to work on. 

“But I think 

the biggest thing 

was that we have 

gelled 

really 

well 

as a 

team 

since.” 

Hastie, who played 68 games 

for the Black Sticks, said winning 

the Ōtautahi Cup was a 

great experience for the squad’s 

six new players. 

“I was very pleased with how 

the new Cats played,” he said. 

“We had to play with 13 players 

due to illness and injury so 

the way they worked with heart 

and passion was impressive.” 

Hastie, who previously 

coached the Canterbury 

Cavaliers, is in his second 

year as head coach of the Cats. 

Commonwealth Games bronze 

medallist Kate Trolove is the 

assistant coach. 

The Cavaliers narrowly missed 

out on the national championship 

final last year, finishing 

third. They go into the tournament 

on the back of two wins 

and a loss at the Ōtautahi Cup. 

The Canterbury Beavers, who 

won the men’s tier 2 competition 

last season, are favourites to win 

their grade again. They beat tier 

1 defending champions Otago 

4-2 at the Ōtautahi Cup last

Club sevens makes a come back 


A NEW South Island club sevens 

tournament is set to be hosted 

by Canterbury Rugby Union this 

November following a four-year 

absence of any competition due 

to Covid. 

Larry’s South Island club sevens 

will be played at University 

of Canterbury’s Ilam Fields on 

November 11 and 12, with both 

male and female grades on offer. 

The competition is a new initiative 

from New Zealand Rugby 

which CRFU offered to host, 

metro operations co-ordinator 

Georgia Calder-Lee said. 

“(It’s) a way to bring some 

sevens back to South Island players 

after the national provincial 

union tournament that used to 

occur pre-Covid was stopped,” 

she said. 

“South Island provincial 

unions used to compete in a 

regional tournament (which) 

would qualify them for the national 

one hosted by the Bay 

of Plenty.” 

It is an extension of Canterbury’s 

annual spring sevens 

series, which is still set to take 

place a week before on November 

4 and 5. 

Calder-Lee said CRFU are 

hoping to get a “good uptake” of 

teams from outside the region 

for the South Island tournament. 

It is open to any club team 

from the South Island. There 

will be a $5000 prize pool up for 

grabs, while team entry is $150.

eye movement) sleep cycles. Glycine also 

supports healthy growth hormone (GH) 

secretion that is associated with strength, 

good health, and vitality, whereas low 

secretion of GH is associated with advanced 

ageing and increased disease. 

Other clinical research has shown glycine 

supplementation to improve memory and 

attention in young to older adults. 

Spanish researchers have studied the effect 

of glycine supplementation in 600 subjects 

between the ages of 4 and 85 years suffering 

from osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, or physical 

injuries. Participants were given 5 grams of 

glycine in the morning and 5 grams in the 

evening. In all cases, symptoms significantly 

improved.

Growing Gardens, Easy As! 

STEP 1. 

Pick a sunny spot. 

Pick a sunny sheltered area for your garden. This could be an existing 

garden bed, planter troughs, pots or for limited space, balcony planters. 

STEP 2. 

Sort out your soil. 

There are a number of options, the most common being a 

bag of vegetable mix. Or mix organic matter, like compost 

or sheep pellets, into your existing soil. Make sure your soil is 

not too sandy or compact like clay. Your plants need a good 

base to thrive - think soft and crumbly. 

Make a plan - seeds or seedlings? 

Growing from seed requires more time and effort, but yields more 

for your money. Seedlings are quicker and easier, but cost extra. 

Next, pick your veggies and plan out when to plant. Like all produce, 

once picked it doesn’t last forever. Staggering planting times gives 

a longer harvesting period. E.g. plant the same variety a couple of 

weeks apart so you can harvest crop 1, while crop 2 is still growing.

TIP: 

‘Companion planting’ is when two or more plants are grown near each other for the benefit of one or both of the plants. 

Planting some flowers in or near your garden attracts pollinators, like bees, and can also act as natural pest control.

watering and feeding times for your chosen plants. This guide 

will also show the best time to harvest. If you are still usure,
