Self-proclaimed “dog daddies” Brant
Shih and Dearrick Knupp know how special it can
be to travel with your pups. So when they opened
Fox & Bear Lodge in July 2021, making it a
pet-friendly place was a top priority. Well-behaved
dogs under 85 pounds are welcome (max
two per reservation) and receive a puffy bed to
sleep on, feeding bowls, a chewing toy, organic

HIT THE SURF AND SAND
By October 1, almost every town
along the Jersey Shore loosens its restrictions,
and leashed dogs are welcome on the beach.
For a tranquil walk with dogs unaccustomed
to the ocean, seek out the bayside
beaches of Sandy Hook in the Gateway National
Recreation Area, with coves, walkways
and an occasional kite surfer. On either side of
the Barnegat Inlet, dogs are welcome.
Island Beach State Park has a particularly
wide peninsula at the southern tip, and Barnegat
Light State Park on Long Beach Island
welcomes dogs along their long jetty and
beach. A truly wonderful, scenic place in South
Jersey is Longport Dog Beach, a long stretch of
uninhabited beach with great views.
Looking for beaches with lots of other pets?
In Asbury Park, the North Beach area has a designated
beach where dogs may roam off leash,
and it’s often a fun scene. In the northern part of
Brigantine beyond the town’s boardwalk, dogs
are permitted year-round.
Just off the Wildwood boardwalk at Maple
Avenue, a giant fire hydrant is the centerpiece
of a fenced dog park. Fresh water and clean-up
bags are available. Leashed dogs are welcome
at the beach a few hundred feet from the park.
In Cape May, hit the beach, and then, with
your pet, enjoy sunset at Sunset Beach.

GO DOG SLEDDING
Dog sledding in New Jersey? Yes,
it’s true! The Jersey Sands Sled Dog Racing
Association meets regularly in Brendan T. Byrne
State Forest to train and have fun. The best part?
Anyone with an interest can bring their dog and
is welcome to join. Equipment is available to borrow,
and meet-up dates are posted on Facebook.

EXPLORE A MUSEUM
No need to leave your pet outside at
historic Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport. The
Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum
welcomes pets on leash as their owners marvel
at more than 26 aircraft, from a Russian MiG-15
jet fighter to helicopters and World War II aircraft.
There’s even a Coast Guard patrol boat.
