Quake damaged jetty
to reopen after 12 years
• By Sasha Watson
THE OPENING of a
community-led rebuild of
the 300m long Governors
Bay jetty is just over two
weeks away.
The free public event
on September 30 will
celebrate years of hard
work, Governors Bay Jetty
Restoration Trust chair Prue
Miller said.
The jetty was badly
damaged by the February 22,
2011 earthquake, and closed.
“Construction of the top
handrails and welding of the
two ladders attached to the
jetty are the final touches to
be completed this week and
the city council will do its
final inspection next week,”
said Miller.
“This project has been
driven by the community.
We had a local supplier,
LMA Timber, who
supplied all of the piles
and substructure wood.
That wood is sustainable
hardwood from Australia.”
NZ first for swim team
THE CITY council swim
education team has become
the first organisation in New
Zealand to get accreditation
as a water skills for life
provider.
City council swim
education manager Tina de
Boer said the accreditation
is recognition of the team’s
dedication to the Swimsafe
programme which educates
children about water safety.
“Teaching children water
safety is a crucial skill
they will use for the rest
of their life. Our goal is to
give children the skills and
knowledge they need to
assess risk and make smart
decisions around water.
“We are very proud to
have received this significant
recognition for the hard work
and effort we have put into
our successful programme.”
De Boer said the Swimsafe
programme has been
developed over a number of
years.
No other organisation
or individual in New
Zealand has received this
accreditation to date.
Water Skills for Life is
a national water safety
education programme,
supported by Water Safety
New Zealand and ACC.
It was developed for
children in years 1-8 to learn
water safety while at school.
Community energy plan
Wednesday September 13 2023 Bay Harbour News
explored in Lyttelton
A GROUP of Lyttelton
residents are exploring ways
of setting up a communityowned
energy scheme in the
port town.
Pat Scott has been
researching the topic for
months and looking for
openings to make the idea
come to life.
“I was initially interested in
how Lyttelton residents with
solar panels on their roofs
could share power with their
neighbours,” she said.
It led her to a meeting
with a scientist from Climate
Navigator who was doing
research for lines company
Orion on the growing interest
in community energy.
Said Scott: “We had a
meeting with the scientist in
February. Initially five people
were interested in the issues
and now that number has
grown to eight.
“Community-owned energy
is more common overseas
but with the idea catching
on here and industry players
showing an interest in
community power I wanted
our community to have the
opportunity to be involved.”
oN sAle Now!
A further meeting followed
with another Orion representative
and then a few more
people with energy experience
joined the core group.
Now a
team headed
by Wendy
Everingham
is meeting
and thinking
of energy
possibilities
for Lyttelton.
Wendy
Everingham
Everingham
has been
a key part of
Lyttelton for
the past 20 years. She worked
alongside Margaret Jefferies to
create the Lyttelton Farmers
Market, festivals, timebank
and many other community
projects under the banner
of Project Lyttelton. She was
also the Lyttelton Information
Centre manager and chair.
“In the face of rapidly climbing
carbon emissions and
increasingly severe weather
events, our communities will
need to increase their resilience.
Local energy sources
will ensure we have power
when we need it most,” she
said.
“The projects our group
envisages will also assist
making renewable energy
affordable and for all residents.
We are particularly interested
in the ability to share solar
power with our neighbours.
Peer to peer sharing will
become a possibility sooner
rather than later.
“I think we are on the cusp
of an energy revolution and
this project has the potential to
help our whole town benefit.”
Everingham said while
the small team is “dreaming
of possibilities” to be a true
community response it needs
to hear from more people.
“We are planning a speakers
series where we can hear
from people in the field about
what the state of play is in
the energy industry. Who
are the players, what are the
challenges, what needs to be
solved to achieve our aims?
“We can also learn about
the various technologies/
schemes available to enable
communities to generate/share
power with one another and
just how to be more energy
conscious in general.”
Playing to royals and touring with
Vickie van Uden took up
the role of Sumner Silver
Band conductor about a
year ago. But her musical
career has seen her play
for Prince Charles and
work with Kanye West
as part of the all-women
brass quartet Bella Tromba.
She talks to reporter Sasha
Watson
VICKIE VAN Uden has
travelled the globe to perform at
top international music events
and featured on television and
radio many times.
After more than 20 years as a
professional trumpet player, van
Uden moved to Sumner in 2021
and took up the role of conductor
of the Sumner Silver Band.
One of the greatest memories
of her career was performing
with Bella Tromba at Buckingham
Palace and Windsor Castle
several times between 2010 and
2014 in front of Queen Elizabeth
and the then Prince Charles.
The award winning British
chamber ensemble was founded
in 2004, when four female
trumpet students – Becca Toft,
Emma Bassett, Jo Harris and van
Uden – were waiting for their
orchestral auditions at the Royal
Academy of Music in London.
“Prince Charles was lovely –
he thanked each musician after
every performance. He once
spoke about how he played the
cello, although he would’ve loved
to play the trumpet. He said he
could never make the sound
come out right,” said van Uden.
“One time, I accidentally
opened the wrong door after
getting lost in Windsor Castle. I
didn’t realise the Queen was in
residence only a few doors down,
and I came face to face with one
of the guards who was holding
a gun – I have never been so
scared.”
Van Uden says performing at
the brass band national finals at
the Royal Albert Hall as a member
of Bella Tromba was a high
point in her career.
“Twenty-odd years ago, brass
instrument playing was very
male-dominated. Nearly all
of the students at the (Royal
Academy of Music) were men,”
she said.
“We were very lucky to be able
to take such a niche opportunity
and play together. I think perhaps
why we did become so well
established was partly because
we were breaking the mould
for other women coming into
music.”
TALENTED: Vickie van Uden
has travelled the globe as a
trumpet player and is now
the Sumner Silver Band
conductor.
The ensemble has performed
with famous artists, including
United States rapper Kanye
West and English pop rock band
McFly.
“Working with McFly was
great – we were on a tour bus
travelling with them for about
three months. Kanye was, of
course, very cool to work with
too. We did pre-recorded live
shows with him for charity and
variety shows,” said van Uden.
“Kanye was quite envious
he couldn’t play any brass
instruments. Now, both McFly
and Kanye are very famous, and
Kanye, although controversial
nowadays, remains very
talented.”
United Kingdom stations
Classic FM and BBC Radio have
featured Bella Tromba and they
have performed sold-out shows at
the Cheltenham, Henley and St
David’s music festivals.
“Bella Tromba was also invited
to a perform as guest artists at
the International Women’s Brass
Conference in Toronto, Canada.
It was an amazing experience
to be around so many talented
women. I felt on top of the world
over there.”
Bella Tromba was recognised
as Live Music Now fellows from
2005 to 2010, a charity working
and campaigning to create inclusive
social impact through music.
Bella Tromba have also received
several awards, including the
prestigious Park Lane Group
Award. Born in Salford, northern
England, van Uden found her
passion for music after going for
a bike ride with her father Barry.
“He had us stop outside a
beautiful hall one day when
I was very young. I heard the
most beautiful sound coming
from the doors, and found my
grandfather, Francis Frederick
Curran, conducting a band of
30-plus members. That was it – I
was hooked and began to play the
cornet.”
A Canoe Before the Wind
by Vitale Lafaele
An extraordinary memoir of an immigrant son’s story of a
better future.
In 1962, a Sāmoan family journeyed to New Zealand - a
country immigrants once called ‘the land of milk and honey’
- in search of a better life. Instead, their eldest son, Vitale,
arrived in an era of dawn raids by police and immigration
officials, and endless racism and bullying at school. Yet he
endured and, against the odds, grew up to become one of a select few
civilians to pass New Zealand’s elite SAS selection process. After seven years in
Nineteen Steps
by Millie Bobby Brown
The debut novel from global star Millie Bobby Brown
Love blooms in the darkest days…
London, 1942.
Despite the raging war, spirited 18-year-old Nellie Morris lives a quiet life in the
tight-knit East End community of Bethnal Green. Her family and friends all tease
that she will marry air raid warden Billy, the boy next door who’s always been
sweet on her.
The arrival of Ray, a handsome American airman stationed nearby, causes Nellie
to question everything she thought she knew about her future.
Nellie’s newfound happiness is short-lived when a tragic accident occurs during
an air raid. Even the closest family can’t escape the devastation of war, and as
the secrets and truth about that fateful night become clear, they threaten to tear
Nellie – and those dearest to her – apart.
Inspired by the true events of her family history, Millie Bobby Brown’s dazzling
debut novel is a moving tale of longing, loss and secrets, and the lengths that we
will go to fight for love.
Kanye worth trumpeting about
Van Uden began her musical
education at Chetham’s School
of Music in Manchester. She
took up playing the trumpet and
flugelhorn, before moving to
London to study at the Guildhall
School of Music and Drama
and then the Royal Academy of
Music.
While studying at the Royal
Academy, van Uden met her
husband Paul van Uden who was
from Sumner.
“Paul, as he had played the
trombone as a youngster, wanted
to join a brass band in London
to fulfil his hobby while he was
travelling the world,” van Uden
said.
“We fell in love, performed
at concerts together, and set up
our bands, before marrying and
having our two children – Harry
age seven and Lydia age four. We
have been married for eight years
now.”
The family moved to New
Zealand in 2021 where van Uden
was offered a conductor’s role
with the Sumner Silver Band.
“Sumner Silver Band
reminds me very much of my
same community feel. I think
it’s pretty cool that we’ve turned
a full circle – from playing in
Said Miller: “We had also
sourced, through someone who
knew someone locally, wood
from a forest of eucalyptus globoidea,
in Little River.
“We harvested that wood,
which has been milled up in
North Canterbury. That wood
has provided all of the handrails
and about half to two-thirds of
the planks. All local, which is
quite cool.”
The opening ceremony will
start at 4pm and coincide with
the arrival of a flotilla from
Naval Point.
“It has been a long time coming.
Everyone has kept the same
vision, although we’ve had many
challenges along the way. We’re
very excited to have it open finally
to the public,” said Miller.
Financial backing by the city
council allowed the trust to
sign fixed-price contracts for
construction and materials, at a
time when prices were increasing
every week.
Said Miller: “The trust has
raised around $1.5 million of
its share of the total project cost
of $3.7 million but still needs to
raise another $350,000. We have
another four years to complete
the funding but hopefully it
won’t take that long.
A LACK of volunteer leaders is
affecting the number of girls who
can participate in Girl Guides.
Girl Guides New Zealand
volunteer and programme team
leader Belinda Turnbull said they
have seen a drop of girls enrolling
in Girl Guides because there
has been no real marketing or
push to get more girls to join the
programme.
“The reason for that is because
we cannot offer everyone the
positive experience we know we
can until we get more volunteer
leaders, as we want to be able
to provide a positive and safe
experience for both our leaders
and our girls,” she said.
Turnbull said the drop in
volunteers is due to people’s lives
changing as well as the economy.
“People’s lives change, the
shortage of leaders at the
Northcote unit is due to one
just having a baby, another has
moved overseas and the other
found it overwhelming with
work, study and volunteering.
“But volunteers from other
units have rallied together to
support Northcote while we
recruit new volunteers and train
them. They have all been working
together as a team to create an
Leaders needed
experience for the girls.”
She said the economy is a bit of
a problem, with most households
unable to live off of one income.
“Both parents are usually
working and between work
and raising their own kids,
most people don’t have time to
volunteer.”
Turnbull said volunteering is a
great way to give back and make
new connections and friendships.
“Part of it is also raising our
next generation of girls to be
confident and adventurous.
Volunteers can also gain
development and training
qualifications and first aid from
volunteering.”
Local coordinator and regional
hub coordinator Lisa Milroy said
Guides is a unique opportunity
for girls to reach their potential
and have a safe place to explore,
grow their confidence, find their
passions, discover things that are
important to them, and learn and
exercise responsibility.
“Girls learn better without
having to compete with boys, and
guiding provides exactly that. In
my time as a member I abseiled,
learned to use a bow and arrow,
shoot a BB gun, and sea kayak.
Now I aim for leaders to get the
same experience.”
Expert navigating
In the lead up
to its 150th
anniversary
celebration over
Labour weekend,
the Lyttelton
Brigade looks
back at its past in
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Hanno Sander of the
readers on the project
IN ITS 150 year history the
Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade
has been in some tight spots,
not least when their number
two appliance tried to squeeze
down Cunningham Terrace with
centimetres to spare.
A hundred years ago the only
issue for the new motorised fire
engine on Lyttelton streets was
the gradient. From the 1930s
until the 1970s new appliances
were specifically designed for
tight towns. As new models
kept getting longer and wider
the brigade started to have real
issues getting to emergency calls
and asked the borough council
to widen some streets or restrict
parking.
The council wasn’t having a bar
of that idea. In a February 1983
newspaper article they said that
parking restrictions would
be an extreme inconvenience
and widening narrow streets was
“pie-in-the-sky”. It was up to the
Fire Service to build smaller fire
engines. So there.
This Labour Weekend as the
Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade
celebrates its 150th anniversary
there will no doubt be plenty
of talk about the tight spots
members have found themselves
in over the years, and how – with
training, good driving skills
and a ready supply of clean
underwear – they lived to tell
another tale.
Then as now, careful and
thoughtful parking everywhere
in Lyttelton certainly helps your
brigade.
It’s not overstating it to say – it
could be a matter of life or death.
TREASURES OF THE PAST
Inainatū Pile Bay ‘a child’s paradise’
INAINATŪ PILE Bay, tucked
in behind Rīpapa Island in
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour,
is today a popular holiday
and picnic spot known for its
sheltered beach and calm waters.
Originally, Inainatū fell under
the traditional stewardship of the
Māori settlement at Purau, and
from the early 1800s the nearby
pā at Rīpapa.
Once Whakaraupō became
known as Port Cooper and then
Lyttelton Harbour, Inainatū was
named on European harbour
charts as Shelly Bay, while most
Pākehā locals knew it as Pile Bay.
The latter name came from
the circle of piles driven into its
shallow waters. The date this
structure was built is unknown,
but four piles marked a cardinal
compass point with the fifth
master pile in the centre.
Small coastal vessels could
use the piles to calibrate their
on-board compass by attaching
a stern rope to the master pile,
aligning that with an outer
compass point pile and adjusting
their own compass as needed.
The Gardiner family out of
Purau bought the land in 1874
and planted a wind break of
pines above the sheltered beach,
making the bay a peaceful place
to pitch a tent.
With access generally only
from the waterside, the bay
became a favourite camping
spot for generations of boating
families from the late 1800s into
the 20th century.
By the 1920s, Pile Bay was
the go-to spot for local lads and
their drinking parties, especially
a group known as “the razor
gang”. Their fun came to an
abrupt end, however, when a
staged court case and hanging
stunt for one of the drunken
revellers went terribly wrong,
leading to a real court case and a
ban on their ‘recreational’ activities
in the bay.
Around the same time, a
young Baden Norris – the Lyttelton
Museum’s future founder
– and his family started making
Pile Bay their summer escape.
Led by Richard Thomas,
Baden’s grandfather, they
Lyttelton Museum ref. 7915.1
camped there for six weeks every
summer during school holidays.
Their setup was simple but cosy,
sleeping on straw sacks and
lighting their tents with candles.
Life at the bay was a child’s
paradise – days were filled with
swimming, fishing, and sailing.
The women took on the role of
camp cooks, preparing meals
on an open fire, while the men
would boat daily to and from
Lyttelton Port for work.
Getting supplies was a bit of
a project. They brought most
of what they needed, including
drinking water in kerosene tins,
from Ōhinehou Lyttelton.
The younger children had the
job of collecting spring water in
clay jars. Sometimes they would
also get milk from Candy’s farm
at Camp Bay, and even gather
mushrooms when they could.
Although they had occasional
visitors, the bay was mostly the
Norris family’s personal summer
holiday retreat through the
1920s.
That began to change as the
bay became increasingly popular
into the 1930s, with groups such
early 1900s. Te Ūaka The
Lyttelton Museum ref.
as the Lyttelton Fanciers’ Club
boating over for picnics.
Then in the mid-1930s Len
Anderson built the first bach, or
small holiday cabin, out of broken
down Massey Harris tractor
cases – setting the stage for a
new chapter in the bay’s history.
By 1939, Inainatū Pile Bay had
become a regular gathering place
for the Banks Peninsula Cruising
Club when they began holding
their annual picnic there, a
tradition that continued into the
post-WWII era.
Over the ensuing decades the
bay was eventually populated by
nine small baches amongst the
trees, with piped-in water and
a private road being added for
modern convenience.
As the years have passed, the
bay’s trees have thinned out and
some of the baches have gone,
but the lazy summer holiday
traditions continue to endure for
those in the know.
In fond memory of the late
Baden Norris and his writings on
the ‘Forgotten Bays of Lyttelton
LETTERS
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Selling the silverware,
a major mistake
Readers respond to
last week’s article on
Phil Mauger’s view
ratepayer-owned assets
like the Lyttelton Port
Company should be
sold, or partly, sold off
to private interests. The
issue will be considered
by city councillors
before Christmas
I am very strongly opposed to
selling assets in order to reduce
rates. The funds realised would
give a temporary breather in
rates increases but it would mean
reduced income in the future
so rates would then need to be
increased more.
Selling even a proportion of
the assets would weaken council
control through the democratic
process.
With the looming threats
posed by climate change the
council will need all the resources
at its disposal to enable it to
pay the costs inevitably involved.
– Norman Wilkins
It’s bad enough the city council
has handed over a huge number
of revenue-gathering car parks to
Wilson. As ratepayers, we can’t
afford for any more assets to be
sold off.
We definitely need to manage
and maintain assets such as the
Lyttleton Port, and the airport.
They belong to Christchurch
city and ratepayers. Why would
the city council be considering
selling off our airport on one
hand, and pouring money into
Tarras airport on the other? It
beggars belief.
– Margaret Ingram
Selling council assets that have
been built up over many years
is a matter that deserves the
scrutiny of all ratepayers. I think
a referendum would be the best
way to ensure the issues are fully
examined and the ratepayers
properly informed. We need
information on whether these assets
are making good returns on
the capital invested either now or
in the future. Once they’re sold
the council has lost the ability
to influence vital activities that
affect everyone.
This is not a debate about
‘right’ or ‘left’ politics. It’s about
prudent financial management
both now and in the future.
Long-term, their value may far
exceed our expectations.
– Ormond Wilson
I came to New Zealand after 18
years in China. China achieved
the biggest jump in living
standards in history, largely due
to letting selfish motivation run
free. It’s currently experiencing
a significant downturn because
of curves on that selfishness.
Nothing in my experience which
is in public ownership ever runs
efficiently. I totally support the
sale of Lyttelton port and all
other major council assets.
– Michael Pendleton
It didn’t take long, but some of
us knew this was coming, these
ideologues inflicting despair and
destruction upon civil society.
Politicians who treat everything
with contempt including themselves.
These Barbarians are not at the
gate anymore but have overrun
the city. They have come like
days of old to pillage the wealth
of the population and make
slaves of those who remain.
Who will defend the people,
what sort of society will our
grandchildren inherit? Maybe
this is some form of divine
justice handed out to a lazy, decadent,
indifferent and self
indulgent population who would
rather build a $680 million
stadium and drive around in
utes all day than pay their debts.
They say there is nothing new
under the sun and that history
tells us civilizations rise and fall
over a long period of time; could
it be that we have been living in
a time of enlightenment for too
long now and it is time for a
new ‘Dark Age’ to descend? I
hope Christchurch citizens will
wake up, stand up and run these
bandits out of town.
– Neville Palenski
Under no circumstances
should we sell the silverware.
We need to decide what to do
that is within our budget.
We have to pull back on some
things that are nice to have. We
are lucky to have an airport and
wharf. It is easy to say ‘to keep or
sell?’ We need to think about our
children’s futures.
Didn’t we have a mayor who
promises lots of things? He
needs to be strong and keep his
promises.
Do not sell the silverware.
– Peter Fitzgerald
Absolute no to asset sales,
short term gain based on short
term political cycles. Financial
challenges have to be managed
in ways that retain our control
over environmental issues and
infrastructures.
– Felicite Jardine
The port of Lyttelton is another
drain on the council’s resources
and should be sold to private
interests. It is all very well to
say that this and other council
‘assets’ have paid dividends of
around $2 billion over 30 years,
but that averages out at around
$66 million a year, whereas in
2022 the council’s total revenue
was quoted as $938 million, so
to keep these enterprises on the
books will make little differences
to what ratepayers have to fork
out each year.
– Terry McLaughlin
I don’t believe it is a good idea
to sell off all or part of our assets
including the airport, Lyttelton
port, etc.
– Regan Courtney
Irrespective of political views,
I do not support the council selling
all or part of its assets. First
review inefficiencies, outputs and
reasons for excess expenditure.
Selling assets is only a short term
fix and even then disputable.
– Philip Robinson
I am strongly opposed to the
council selling any of the city’s
assets.
– Brian Smith
I would sell a percentage of the
council owned assets, but keep a
majority.
But I would also look at why
these companies have such a
poor return.
– Peter Bartley
Thank you for providing
somewhere for ratepayers to have
a say on the sales of our assets.
This is short term thinking. I
am strongly opposed to any, or
part sales of the port company or
the airport.
I am also strongly opposed to
the proposed airport at Tarras.
– Jen Cotter
I am strongly opposed to
selling off assets. There is a lot of
money received annually with
possibly more available and what
happens once they are sold. It
is also what the mayor said he
wouldn’t do when canvassing
just last year.
Maybe a survey should be
done on just how many people
are actually using cycleways and
cease this expensive exercise.
Would the right wing councillors
sell off their business assets?
Highly unlikely.
– Doreen Collins
In my option now is not the
time to think about selling off
assets. If they bring in $2 billion
and possibly more, surely the
best thing to do is to try and
maximise the profit from the
assets and increase the amount.
Once you have sold the family
silver it can never be replaced,
and the assets owned by the
ratepayer not the council will
continue to provide well into the
future for the city.
– Chris Irons
We’re absolutely against selling
any of our city council assets.
It makes no sense to sell
companies that are providing
good returns, whose number one
priority is serving the people of
Canterbury.
Why hire a Registered Arborist?
Employing The Tree People offers
numerous advantages and ensures the
proper care and maintenance of trees. Here
are several compelling reasons to consider
hiring us for your tree-related needs:
Expertise and Knowledge:
Professional arborists are trained and
knowledgeable in all aspects of tree care.
They possess a deep understanding of tree
biology, diseases, pests, and proper pruning
techniques. Their expertise enables them
to assess tree health, identify issues, and
provide appropriate solutions.
‘Don’t sell the assets’
- readers respond
Safety:
Tree work can be dangerous, especially
when it involves climbing, using specialized
equipment, or working near power lines.
Professional arborists are trained in
safety protocols and have the necessary
equipment and experience to handle
tree-related tasks safely. They prioritize the
safety of both their team and your property.
Proper Equipment:
Arborist companies have access to
specialized equipment and tools designed
for tree care. From climbing gear and
chainsaws to stump grinders and aerial
lifts, professionals have the right equipment
to tackle any tree-related job efficiently and
effectively.
Tree Health and Longevity:
Professional arborists are dedicated to
the health and longevity of trees. They
can assess the overall health of your
trees, diagnose diseases or infestations,
and provide appropriate treatments.
Proper pruning, fertilization, and disease
management techniques employed by
arborists help ensure that your trees thrive
and live longer.
Property Protection:
Trees can pose risks to property, structures,
and people if not properly maintained.
Professional arborists can assess potential
hazards, such as weak branches or
What is a Registered Master Arborists?
overgrown limbs, and take appropriate
measures to mitigate risks. By employing
professionals, you protect your property
and minimize the chances of accidents or
damage caused by falling trees or branches.
Efficiency and Time-Saving:
Arborist companies have the experience
and efficiency to complete tree-related
tasks in a timely manner. They can quickly
and safely handle tree removal, pruning,
or emergency tree services. Hiring
professionals saves you time and effort
compared to attempting tree work on your
own.
Legal Compliance:
Certain tree-related tasks, such as
excavating around a CCC tree or working
near power lines, require adherence to local
regulations and permits. We are familiar
with these requirements and can ensure
that the work is performed in compliance
with local laws and regulations.
Comprehensive Services:
Arborist companies offer a range of
services beyond tree removal and pruning.
They can provide consultations, tree
planting, tree risk assessments, cabling and
bracing, and pest and disease management.
Their comprehensive approach ensures that
all your tree care needs are met.
Master Arborists must meet quality assurance standards and a high level of professionalism
required by the New Zealand Arboricultural Association (NZ Arb). The NZ Arb assessment
criteria require a certain level of the industry, arboricultural and legislative knowledge,
practical ability combined with proven client service and business systems.
Why should I hire a Registered Master Arborist?
• Approved business systems
• Quality assurance
• Correct insurance covering arboricultural activities
• Protection against substandard work
• The backing and assurance of the New Zealand Arboricultural Association code of conduct
• Professional, ethical, respectful
• Readers letters, from page 18
I disagree entirely with elected people
changing their pre-electon promises once
elected.
City council assets are owned by all
ratepayers and should be retained by all
ratepayers. If they want to sell them it
should be a referendum, allowing every
ratepayer to voice their opinion.
Returns from these assets benefit all
ratepayers in terms of rates rebates and
any other services that add vibrancy to our
community.
The only benefits to selling are a oneoff
sugar hit for council. It will not give
ratepayers long term benefits.
The only other beneficiaries with
long term gain are those individuals/
companies/internationals who stand to
benefit from returns on their investment.
Those investors (often international
corporates, e.g. superannuation funds)
do not care for our community, our
ratepayers, our city.
The mayor and his right wing
councillors have no mandate to sell off the
city’s silverware.
– Chris McGill
I agree with the Maritime Union in not
selling the port company.
– Jeremy Light
We should not even consider selling our
silverware.
Our councillors were elected to run our
city, not to sell it off to the highest bidder.
Without our port and airport, what
prices would we, not only Christchurch
but all Canterbury and South Island, have
to bear?
– Daphne Crampton
I think the first asset to be sold is the
land the city council have shares in for
the proposed Tarras airport. This airport
plan is ecologically unsound, disruptive
to a beautiful part of Central Otago and is
going to end up costing us the ratepayers
a huge amount of money to get it off the
ground.
There is already a perfectly good airport
in Invercargill that could be developed
further to suit the extra business that has
been proposed for the Tarras airport.
The other assets are already creating an
income, and this should remain.
– Vivien Jones
If these assets are sold off, there will be
no rates reduction and if there is it will
temporary.
Once these assets are sold there will be
no dividend returns, which will lead to
even higher rates. This mayor got in on
broken promises, so why would we trust
him now. While the council may see this
as a short term fix, you can be assured that
if these assets are sold it will be a long term
pain for rate payers, long after this current
mayor and the council are gone.
– C.I Macdonald
Don’t sell the assets.
Why would the decent people of
Christchurch be selfish and choose a shortterm
infusion of cash from these valuable
working assets when returns from them
over time will continue to benefit future
residents?
Why would the far-sighted council, on
our behalf, choose to relinquish control of
these key infrastructure companies and
jeopardise the city’s ability to shape our
destiny – especially given the impacts of
climate change and sea level rise?
Why would our straightforward ‘what
you see is what you get’ Mayor Phil
Mauger renege on his promise not to sell
assets, thereby damaging his reputation?
I thank those councillors who have
stood firm against pressures to sell the
silverware.
– Belinda Meares
ERENITY
NFIDENCE
RETIREMENT VILLAGES AND ORA LICENCES – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
A retirement village can be a fantastic option,
but it’s important to know the ins and outs of them so
you can decide whether or not this is the right move
for you. They offer many benefits, including maintained
accommodation (very attractive if looking after a
large garden has become a burden), the chance to
make friends with your neighbours in the village, and
different levels of services for when needs change.
However, these benefits come at a cost and involve
a different sort of property ownership from the usual
type of home ownership we all know.
Most retirement villages use Occupation Right
Agreements (ORAs) – an agreement that only
grants you a personal right (licence) to live in the
dwelling or room in the village. You don’t have actual
ownership of the property itself; it still belongs to
the village. The personal right/licence comes with
various expectations, obligations and village rules that
you must be willing to comply with as an occupant,
including that you pay for the right. This is an entry fee,
and although you pay the purchase price for it, you will
not get that same amount back when your occupation
right terminates.
Why? Firstly, when the licence commences, the
village usually deducts a percentage from the entry
payment as a contribution to the village. Then there
are additional yearly fees to cover, sometimes called
deferred management fees. Each year for a set number
of years (usually three), the village can deduct a
percentage of that entry payment up to a maximum
amount. These fees, along with any outstanding
village or other fees (for services or utilities), are
deducted first, hence you receive less at the end of the
agreement than you paid on entry. Because the village
owns the property itself, you rarely receive the benefit
of any increase in value when the licence is then sold to
another occupant.
Although moving to a retirement village can be right
for you, these factors all require careful consideration.
Hence, villages require occupants to seek legal
advice around the ORA before it’s arranged, and
provide a ‘cooling off period’ after signing in case of
change of mind. They also often require confirmation
that a valid Will and enduring powers of attorney
(EPOAs) are in place.
Tucked away in the ever so popular McCormacks Bay, a
post-quake family HOME is very rare to come by.
Positioned for great sun and set within its very own
microclimate, this is one of the best kept positions that our
coastal suburbs have to offer.
With an internal access double garage and low
maintenance construction, this HOME will provide lots of
free time to explore the local walking tracks, weekend
farmers markets and the beautiful scenery along the coastal
walkway.
With the owners relocating overseas, this is a must see and
must sell! Pop along to our regular open homes or contact
