City council swim education manager Tina de Boer said the accreditation is recognition of the team’s dedication to the Swimsafe programme which educates children about water safety. “Teaching children water safety is a crucial skill they will use for the rest of their life. Our goal is to give children the skills and knowledge they need to assess risk and make smart decisions around water. “We are very proud to have received this significant recognition for the hard work and effort we have put into our successful programme.” De Boer said the Swimsafe programme has been developed over a number of years. No other organisation or individual in New Zealand has received this accreditation to date. Water Skills for Life is a national water safety education programme, supported by Water Safety New Zealand and ACC. Pat Scott has been researching the topic for months and looking for openings to make the idea come to life. “I was initially interested in how Lyttelton residents with solar panels on their roofs could share power with their neighbours,” she said. It led her to a meeting with a scientist from Climate Navigator who was doing research for lines company Orion on the growing interest in community energy. Said Scott: “We had a meeting with the scientist in February. Initially five people were interested in the issues and now that number has grown to eight. “Community-owned energy is more common overseas but with the idea catching on here and industry players showing an interest in community power I wanted our community to have the opportunity to be involved.” oN sAle Now! A further meeting followed with another Orion representative and then a few more people with energy experience joined the core group. Now a team headed by Wendy Everingham is meeting and thinking of energy possibilities for Lyttelton. Wendy Everingham Everingham has been a key part of Lyttelton for the past 20 years. She worked alongside Margaret Jefferies to create the Lyttelton Farmers Market, festivals, timebank and many other community projects under the banner of Project Lyttelton. She was also the Lyttelton Information Centre manager and chair. “In the face of rapidly climbing carbon emissions and increasingly severe weather events, our communities will need to increase their resilience. Local energy sources will ensure we have power when we need it most,” she said. “The projects our group envisages will also assist making renewable energy affordable and for all residents. We are particularly interested in the ability to share solar power with our neighbours. Peer to peer sharing will become a possibility sooner rather than later. “I think we are on the cusp of an energy revolution and this project has the potential to help our whole town benefit.” Everingham said while the small team is “dreaming of possibilities” to be a true community response it needs to hear from more people. “We are planning a speakers series where we can hear from people in the field about what the state of play is in the energy industry.
