become cooler, and in the

Questioning faith: Don’t be afraid to ask God for answers

Have you ever thought about faith? 

Well, everyone has some faith. They 

have faith — even unknowingly — that 

their vehicle will get them from Point A to 

Point B with no trouble. They have faith 

that they can get through each day without 

any problems. 

You may even have “doubting faith.” 

Well, that’s still a kind of faith. Many people 

have questioned their faith, only to find 

that their questioning was like a child asking 

their parents “Why?” a dozen times. 

We all ask questions about things, especially 

about what we believe in. This is 

nothing new. Even great characters of faith 

from the Bible had questions. If you don’t 

believe me, just take a look at your Bible, 

and you can read about all those who had 

questions about everything. 

To have questions of faith is typical for 

all of us. We all want to understand and 

want to know the “why” of things. 

I’ve even had people ask me why we need 

to pray. To me, this is an odd question. We 

all pray about something daily, even if we 

don’t realize we’re praying. It may not be a 

traditional prayer, but we DO pray in various 

ways. 

Have you ever prayed you would get 

where you are going on time — not asking 

as a direct prayer, but as a thought? Life 

is full of prayers that are said daily. We all 

question ourselves about what’s going on 

in our daily lives. 

As adults, we ask the “why” in our daily 

lives. Sometimes we give answers to our 

questions. I know I have done that on several 

occasions. 

Jesus said we should come to him as children. 

Children are always full of questions,

so don’t be afraid to ask questions when 

you pray. And don’t be surprised if you get 

a positive or negative answer. Sometimes 

“no” can actually be the better answer, because 

God may have a better plan for you. 

In my lifetime, I have received quite a few 

“no” answers to prayer, only to later receive 

a better “yes.” It all worked out for me in a 

much better situation. 

Have you asked a question and received 

a “no” but later got a better response? 

That’s how you know God listens and answers 

all our questions and prayers. Don’t 

be afraid to ask questions. If you don’t 

question things, you won’t get an answer. 

Kids know how to keep asking until they 

have all the answers. Well, God wants us to 

keep asking until he gives us all the correct 

answers. Have faith in your prayer questions, 

and know God is there with your 

answer. Draw on him for your direction 

in life. He has the answer to all your questions.

Edition, Part 1

Welcome to another week of Over 

the Top! I’m so excited about our upcoming 

autumn season. This edition 

of “What Goes Bump in the Night” will 

take us to the campus of Florida State 

University (FSU). 

Have you ever walked somewhere 

and felt a shivering chill traveling 

down your body? Have you ever waked 

up in the middle of the night feeling 

like someone … or something … was 

watching you? Have you ever heard 

someone call your name — but when 

you turned around, no one was there? 

I need you to answer these, along 

with this final and most crucial question: 

Have you experienced any of 

these moments as a student or faculty 

member (or as a visitor) at FSU? If you 

have … well, you are not the first, nor 

the last. 

Let’s visit our first campus location, 

Cawthon Hall. 

The oldest FSU ghost story originated 

decades before the school was even 

established. Long before the Cawthon 

Hall dormitory was built, Gallows Hill 

stood in its place. Constructed in 1829, 

the Gallows was the hangout spot for 

the most unpleasant criminals in Tallahassee. 

Sightings of the ghost of a mother, 

who was convicted of killing her own 

child, have been reported, causing students 

to feel chills and hear strange 

sounds in the area at night. 

But wait — there’s more! The murderous 

mom is not the only spirit who 

allegedly haunts the building. 

After Cawthon Hall was built as a 

dormitory for students, they began to 

have ghostly visits from the person after 

which the building was named. Sarah 

“Tissie” Landrum Cawthon, a former 

campus house mother who oversaw the 

female students’ behavior and representation 

of themselves, is said to have 

moved into the dorm when the building 

was dedicated to her. She became 

more active as students began following 

more modern standards of conduct and 

wearing more revealing clothing. 

The other ghost of the hall is reportedly 

a female student who lived in the 

dorm in the 1970s. One day, the unidentified 

student went to the roof to sunbathe, 

but a storm rolled in. According 

to campus lore, she tried to go back into 

the building but discovered the door 

was locked. She began banging on the 

door, hoping someone would hear her 

and let her in. Unfortunately, she was 

struck by lightning and was later found. 

Students today have reported hearing 

someone pounding on their windows, 

crying and screaming to be let in. They

also report seeing the ghostly figure of 

a woman looking into their windows 

from outside. 

Whew! There are so many ghosts 

on FSU’s campus! I think FSU should 

change its name to Florida’s Ghost University. 

Well, maybe not, but it could 

work for a great Halloween fundraiser 

for the university. Who do I need to 

contact on campus, and how do I put 

a patent on this idea? FSU, you can 

contact me if you want to use the idea.
