spring is just around the 

corner. That means it’s time 

to get out into the yard and 

tackle some spring cleaning. 

With a little DIY prep work 

now, your yard will be your 

family’s oasis for months to 

come. 

Here are seven spring 

cleanup tasks from ECHO 

Inc. to put on your to-do list, 

along with the right tools to 

get the job done. 

Clean up debris. Gather 

up any stray branches, 

twigs and trash that have 

blown into your yard. Tool 

tip: Keep two bags handy, 

one that you regularly use 

for garbage and a bag specifically 

designed for yard 

waste. Garbage services in 

many cities have specific 

windows of time in which 

they’ll pick up yard waste 

in the spring, so check with 

yours and make sure you get 

your debris to the curb on 

time! 

Rake the lawn. Didn’t 

get to those leaves before 

the first snowfall? Now’s 

the time to rake them up. 

This will let sunlight and air 

reach your grass, sparking 

it to grow. Tool tip: They go 

in that same yard waste bag 

you’re using for debris. 

Do you need to aerate? 

Take a hard look at 

your lawn. Is the soil too 

compacted? Do you have 

bare patches? It could mean 

you need to aerate the soil. 

Tool tip: You can do this job 

yourself by renting an aerator 

from your local hardware 

store. Or, bring in a 

lawn service to do it for you. 

This is also the time to apply 

fertilizer if your yard needs 

it. 

Deal with downed 

trees or branches. After 

this unpredictable winter, 

many people are faced 

with downed trees or large 

branches in their yards. Cutting 

them up and disposing 

of them now will save lawn 

headaches later. Tool tip:

We’ve all heard stories that start with 

“Once Upon a Time.” Well, here is another 

famous story, but it has a significant conclusion. 

It all starts with this woman and two buckets. 

She would carry these two buckets to the 

river daily and fill them. Then, on her way 

back home, she trod the same path carrying 

these water-filled buckets. Oh, but that’s not 

all! Along the way back, one of the buckets on 

her right side had a hole in it, dripping water 

all along the path. 

Daily, the watering on her right side produced 

an excellent array of flowers. Oh, so 

pretty! And the fragrance just filled the air. 

Then someone asked her, “Why not get rid 

of that leaky bucket? It does no good to drip 

water and lose it all along the way.” 

She said, “Oh, but look at all those pretty 

flowers. They bloom and grow from the drips 

of my bucket. Now look at the other side of 

the road. That bucket kept all its water, so 

nothing grew or blossomed along the pathway 

there.” 

Now, you may wonder what all this story 

means and how it affects you. 

Well, let me tell you what you can gather 

from this. That leaky bucket is you! Yes, you 

“drip” all along the pathway of your life. Every 

good thing you do, whether it is to help someone 

or just do your daily job, is dripping along 

the way of your life. You touch someone daily 

by your actions. You can transform someone 

who may just be having a terrible day or a 

tough time with a smile or a kind word. We 

may not even notice what we have done, but 

someone along our pathway notices, producing 

a bloom that will blossom someday. 

We watered someone’s life. This could be 

that stranger you smiled at on the sidewalk, 

the restaurant waitress, or maybe a co-worker. 

Have you ever thought the shipper or receiver 

of what you are hauling may need a “drop of 

water” to make their day more pleasant? Every 

person we encounter needs someone like us to 

touch their lives positively.
