3 hearing health strategies for older adults 

As people age, our hearing 

tends to decline for multiple 

reasons, including repetitive 

exposure to loud sounds and 

genetic factors. In fact, hearing 

loss ranks as the third 

most common chronic condition 

among all Americans. 

For older Americans, nearly 

a quarter of those aged 65 

to 74 have hearing loss. That 

number increases to 50% for 

those 75 and older. 

For people in this situation, 

obtaining treatment as 

soon as possible is crucial, 

as hearing is vital to staying 

connected with friends and 

family. Studies have shown 

that hearing loss can contribute 

to social isolation, cognitive 

decline, trouble communicating 

and more. 

While there is no cure for 

certain types of hearing loss, 

there are options to treat 

it and help you maintain 

an active lifestyle. In fact, 

the recent ACHIEVE Study 

found that for older adults 

at increased risk of cognitive 

decline, accessing hearing 

invention, specifically hearing 

aids, slowed down loss of 

thinking and memory abilities 

by 48% over three years. 

To help prevent further 

hearing loss, avoid potential 

medication-related 

complications, and make 

more informed decisions 

about testing and treatment, 

here are three tips 

from Dr. Claire Collord 

Johnson, audiologist with 

UnitedHealthcare Hearing: 

1. Continue to focus on 

prevention. Even if you are 

already experiencing hearing 

loss, it’s important to avoid 

exposure to one-time or prolonged 

loud sounds. When 

attending events such as 

concerts or sporting events, 

use protection such as foam 

or custom ear plugs. 

There may be other activities 

in your day-to-day routine 

causing damage, too. 

Prolonged exposure to noise 

over 70 decibels over time 

can damage hearing health. 

Sources of sound above this 

decibel level can include 

lawn mowers, power tools or 

listening to music at high volumes. 

When using earbuds 

or headphones, follow the 

60-60 listening rule, which

Where do you find the love of God? It could be in a simple act of kindness

Have you ever considered all that love can 

mean? We love our family. Some people say they 

love their job, their home, or their car. 

Let us explore another avenue of love. I want 

to tell you a story about a little boy, an old man 

and God. 

There was a little boy with many questions on 

his mind. He went into the kitchen and said to 

his mother, “Mommy, where is God?” She told 

him that God was far away but always watching 

over him. 

The boy had another question: “Mommy, can I 

go find God?” Again, his mother said, “Well, God 

is way, far away, sitting on a bench and looking 

after everyone. He has the trees around him, and 

the birds are chirping, and God just sits there 

watching all.” 

Well, the little boy started to think about this, 

and he decided he wanted to find God. So, he borrowed 

his sister’s backpack and went back into 

the kitchen. He put a bag of potato chips in the 

backpack, then went to the refrigerator, took two 

cans of soda, and put them in the backpack too. 

He told his mother he was going outside for a 

while, and off he went — out the gate and down 

the street. He just kept walking and walking. Soon 

he was at the city park. He felt tired, so he started 

to look for a place to rest. Just as he crossed the 

grass, he saw an old man sitting on a bench, looking 

around. Then he noticed the trees and the birds. 

“Wow! I found God,” he thought to himself. 

So, he went and sat next to the old man. As he sat 

in the old man’s presence, listening to the birdsong, 

he felt content. 

After a while, the boy became hungry. He opened 

the backpack, took out the potato chips and opened 

the bag. Upon getting a chip out, he smiled at the 

old man and offered it to him. The old man smiled 

back and took the chip. The little boy watched him 

eat it. Again, the little boy pulled out two potato 

chips — one for the old man and one for himself. 

The little boy and the old man sat, sharing their 

enjoyment of the peaceful setting and munching 

those delicious, salty potato chips. When the 

boy became thirsty, he pulled out the two cans 

of soda, giving one to the man and drinking the 

other himself. 

After they had shared all the potato chips and 

soda, the little boy said goodbye to the old man 

and happily started toward home. When he got 

home, the little boy ran into the kitchen with a 

big smile on his face. He greeted his mother with 

a joyful shout, “Mommy, I found God, just like 

you said! He was sitting on the bench in the park, 

and we had lunch together! Wow! It was so cool.” 

Startled to hear that her child had spent the 

afternoon with a stranger, not wanting to unduly 

upset her son, she said, “Oh, how nice. I am happy 

you found God on the bench in the park.” 

Meanwhile, the old man left the park and 

walked to the home he now shared with his adult 

son. He entered the house with a spring in his step 

and a smile on his face. His son greeted him, saying, 

“Hey Dad! Why are you so happy?” The old 

man replied, “I just had lunch with God, in the 

park. But I never expected him to be so young!” 

God makes his home in each one of us, and he

Where do you find God? Where do you share 

the love of friendship with someone? Do you 

see God in your neighbor? Do you see God in 

the irritable child in the restaurant? The clerk 

at the grocery store or gas station? The server 

in the restaurant? Just where do you see God? 

Just where do you share the friendship of love to 

someone that is a stranger in your life? 

Love shared in the name of friendship is just as 

precious as the love you share with your family, 

your spouse, your children. 

God’s love can be found in a stranger as well as 

a friend or relative. Never underestimate the power 

of the love of friendship. Sometimes all a person 

needs are a smile and a little companionship. 

In my story, that bag of potato chips and those 

cans of soda shared between that little boy and 

the old man symbolized a communion of the soul 

for each of them. They joined in the power of the 

love of friendship to show that God is present in 

everyone — big and small, young and old. 

All you need to do is look for it in each other, 

because it is there in all of us.
