The day of the annual Cy-Hawk
Series football game is always a bit
crazy for the host town, but this year was
exceptional.
Not exceptional as
far as football goes
— no matter which
team you were rooting
for, the game
was not exciting. You
could make a case for
the first few minutes
of the first quarter,
and the last couple
minutes of the fourth
quarter, but there
wasn’t much else that
was memorable.
But the town was

buzzing with talk of presidential candidates
visiting.
We were in our seats at Jack Trice Stadium
before the game began when my husband
noticed photographers on the sidelines
with their massive lenses pointed away
from the field and toward the stadium
suites.
We also noticed spotters and sharpshooters
near the jumbo screen and high up
above the press box. I found myself playing
out “what-if” scenarios in my head as they
attentively did their jobs.
During the playing of the national anthem,
two National Guard fighter jets flew
over the stadium. My brother-in-law, who
is fascinated with aviation, had his camera
ready to film their flight.
Later during a break in the game, the
pilots were introduced on the sidelines. As
their names were called out, the first pilot
unzipped the top of his flight suit to reveal
a Cyclone T-shirt. The second sported the
same colors, but pilot number three proudly
displayed a Hawkeye shirt.
For Cyclone fans, two-out-of-three for pilot
colors on the day of the Cy-Hawk series
will have to be our win for the year.

The fun and games continue to
evolve at The Grove.
The pumpkin patch outside
Milford is entering its fourth season
and owner Taryn Kurpgeweit is eager
for visitors to see everything they
have to offer this year.
“It’s crazy to think about it being
season four already and it’s been really
fun to see how it’s grown every
year,” Taryn said. “The community
has been awesome and so supportive
coming and checking it out every
year and we try to add things based
on their recommendations down to
the smallest thing.”
Opening day is Saturday, Sept. 23,
then the Grove will be open from 10
a.m.-6 p.m. each weekend through
Oct. 29 when they will close at 3 p.m.
for the season.
Admission is $10 per person with
children ages two and under getting
in for free.
This year they also added a $2 discount
for seniors ages 65 and older,
as well as a military discount.
Anyone who visits will notice one
big change this
year — the addition
of a 65-by-
38-foot pumpkinshaped
jumping
pad.
They also added
two carts to the
popular trike track,
as well as a milking
station, and
some additions
for the Imagination
Station.
They also purchased
a food
truck to be repurposed as The Grove
Grub. And per request they’re going
to sell Grove T-shirts this year.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a
pumpkin patch without those iconic
gourds and all their variations.
“We did 27 different varieties this
year. My daughter and I planted the
entire patch except for five rows,”
Taryn said. “My mom and I have
tried different ways to control weeds
every year and this is our best one
yet. We try to stay away from a lot of
sprays to we were basically out there
every morning going up and down
the rows old-school style. It was
definitely worth when I look out over
them this year.”

The Nystrom family knows
apples.
They’ve been growing them
for five generations.
Nystrom Orchard is committed to
helping people explore the variety of
ways to enjoy nature’s fall treat.
They seek to offer a winery-like,
artisan apple experience with a number
of events they host throughout
the fall season.
The orchard is located on four
acres located a few miles south of
Worthington, MN, and features a
couple thousand trees, according to
Kia Nystrom, who owns and operates
Nystrom Orchard with the help
of her family. They have about 16
varieties of apples throughout the

season.
The crop is looking good this year.
“We are fortunate to have a very
nice apple crop. Many orchards have
very little to no apples this year in
the area,” Kia said. “We will have all
varieties available throughout the
season.”
In addition to being able to pick
your own apples in their orchard
they will also be offering up a number
of gourmet tasting events to
experience apples in a new way.
“Our commercial kitchen is finished
which allows us to expand
on our product lineup and tasting
events! I am also now at the orchard
full time so hopefully we can continue
to expand our offerings,” Kia
said.
The orchard
has a shop where
people can
buy pre-picked
apples along with Kia’s homemade
Dutch apple pies, apple crisps, salted
caramel dip, apple sauce, apple cider
and other products grown and
made on the farm. Every product
in the shed is either made or raised
by Nystrom Orchard or a friend or
neighbor. The orchard is open now
through the end of October.
The orchard hosts activities and
events for families and kids throughout
the fall such as a scavenger hunt
through the orchard on Oct. 1. For
the adults, they host a number of
gourmet tasting
events

events often sell out so
people should reserve
their spots early by going
to the Nystrom Orchard

on Fridays, Saturdays and
Sundays this fall. People can contact
Nystrom Orchard to customize the
experience for a fun and different
night out.
Kia loves apples and is excited
about sharing the story of their
orchard as well as the fruits of their
labor with people who come to visit.

When you hear the first few
notes, it’s almost impossible
to resist the urge to bob
your head and swing back and forth.
Then it comes to the chorus and
everyone sings as loud as they can,
“Sweeeeeet Caroline!”
That scene takes place countless
times a year across the country at
weddings and sporting events, karaoke
parties and concerts and will
now be in the heart of the Iowa Great
Lakes.
“I Am He Said: A Celebration of
Neil Diamond” is scheduled for is
scheduled for Friday, Sept. 22, at the
Roof Garden Ballroom in Arnolds
Park.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and
general admission tickets are $35 in
advance.
Tier 1 tickets, which includes the
first nine rows of seats, have already
sold out.
“That’s always a good sign that
people are excited to see a show,”
said Chris Swanson, director of marketing
at Arnolds Park. “I can already
hear people singing along to ‘Sweet
Caroline.’ No matter what age your
are I think we can all sing some of his
songs.”
In addition to “Sweet Caroline”
there is the classic “Cracklin’ Rosie”
and “America” a song Swanson says
gives him goosebumps and is eager
to see performed in the Roof Garden.
The show is performed by Matt Vee,
along with Jeff and Tommy Vee, local
music scene veterans and sons of
the legendary Bobby Vee, who join
forces with family and friends as The
Killer Vees to
celebrate the
music from
Diamond’s
timeless catalog.

The Browns are offering up a show filled
to the brim with love for their home state
of Iowa.
The family of musicians and performers offers
up a number of shows throughout the year
at The Browns Century Theatre in Le Mars, IA.
Their current show is a love letter to the state
of Iowa.
The theme is Oh, My Iowa! and has three
upcoming shows with a noon buffet followed
by a 1:30 p.m. show on Sept. 20, 27 and Oct.
11.
“This two-hour show contains music from
our great state of Iowa. The songs contained in
the show have something to do with our state,
whether it be an artist that wrote it, the singer
or songwriter, or a place within Iowa,” said Michaela
Brown, one of the family of performers.
The songs will include everything from jazz
to country and everything in between, and you
might be surprised by some of the songs you
will hear.
“You can expect to hear songs that you’re
familiar with, but might’ve never known that
they have something to do with Iowa such as
the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Andy Williams,
the Glenn Miller Orchestra,” Michaela
said. “Also songs from musicals like ‘The Music
Man and ‘State Fair.’”
The Brown Family is composed of siblings:
Adam, Andrew and Michaela Brown. They
are joined in the group by their mom, Shelly
Brown.

The idea for this show came from the matriarch
of the group.
“The theme really came about in the year
2020 while Shelly, the mother of the group was
researching the song, ‘The Little Brown Church
in the Vale’ and it was surprising to her to note
all the different components of that song, the
writer, the place, and all the interesting stories
that went along with it, and how they all tied
to Iowa,” Michaela said. “That was just the beginning
as the group started to research more
songs from our great state.”
The buffet before the performance showcases
some great Iowa home cooking and will
include slow cooked roast beef, potatoes and
gravy along with vegetables, a salad bar and
cheesecake to top it all off.

Art center workshop dives into beginning pottery
It’s not necessarily about reinventing the
wheel. It’s more like learning how to use it
in a new way.
Participants in the newest workshop at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center will have the opportunity
to try their hands at the potter’s wheel.
The two-day course, “Pottery Basics: A Workshop
for Beginners on the Wheel,” will be held
from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturday and
Sunday, Sept. 23-24, in the art center’s clay
studio.
The cost will be $160 for art center members
or $180 for nonmembers and all supplies will
be included.
And in a fun full-circle twist, the workshop
is being led by Ben Roti, a former Spirit Lake
High School student who now operates his
own working studio in Arizona.
“Ben was actually in this very studio here at
the art center while he was in high school, so
it’s fun to have him back around,” said Holly
Zinn Hample, education director at the art center.
The workshop will focus on the core elements
of creating pieces on a potter’s wheel.
“Maybe it’s a refresher if you haven’t worked
with clay since high school, or maybe you have
never done it before,” Zinn Hample said. “Ben
is a very patient instructor and will be showing
everyone how to throw on the wheel. Centering
is a major part of that, so what you need
to look for to get a nice centered piece before
you go on to make your cups and your bowls.
He’ll touch on trimming and what it takes to
finish a piece and maybe for fun touch on slip
techniques.”
Participants will receive a 25-pound bag
of clay to work with and walk away from the
course with a couples pieces to take home, and
likely plenty of clay to come back to the studio

which then they can come in and for free utilize

how the studio works and get take advantage
of our open studio time on Thursdays and Saturdays,”

Participants will also have the chance to see
what their instructor’s finished work looks like
as part of a collaborative exhibit with fellow
Okoboji ceramist Adam Nielsen titled “Arid to
Humid,” which will open in the Goodenow
Gallery a few days prior to the workshop.
“They’ll actually get to look at Ben’s work
in the gallery which will really help them get
a sense of what the potential finished piece
could look like,” Zinn Hample said. “That’s
been a very insightful thing to have when we
can tie in the exhibits and workshops. It helps
make it a more all-encompassing educational
experience.” F
