Millions of eager college<br />

The excitement is electric on<br />
and around campuses, but<br />
to help ensure students have<br />
a year full of learning and<br />
fun, it’s an important time to<br />

While primarily a space<br />
for education, enrichment<br />

crimes and other incidents<br />
occur. According to Clery<br />
Act Reports, an average<br />
of over 24,000 crime<br />
and safety incidents have<br />
been reported annually<br />
on college campuses since<br />
2009. These include:<br />
• 2,411 robberies were<br />
reported on average<br />
annually;<br />
• 1,840 fires were<br />
reported on average<br />
annually; and<br />
• 20,521 burglaries<br />
were reported on average<br />
annually.<br />
Students living in offcampus<br />
housing face a<br />
similar situation. No matter<br />
where you live, it’s important<br />
to be proactive about things<br />
like theft, fire and crime so<br />
that people of all ages can<br />
feel secure while at school.<br />
Theft prevention<br />
Students bring many<br />
things to college, including<br />
expensive items like laptops,<br />
smartphones and bikes.<br />
Always be aware of your<br />
surroundings and protect<br />
your things whenever<br />
possible by taking a few<br />
simple steps.<br />
For example, consider<br />
getting your laptop engraved<br />
with your name, use complex<br />
passwords and only take<br />
it with you when needed.<br />

Reaping what you sow: Plant seeds of goodness in your spiritual garden<br />

How many of you have a vegetable garden?<br />
Even though your summer garden may<br />
only be a memory now, you may be planning<br />
your winter plantings, or even mapping out<br />
plans for next spring.<br />
I love watching those seeds become fruits<br />
or vegetables for my table. Oh, the joy of<br />
watching things burst into life and savoring<br />
the bounty of the harvest! Nothing can compare<br />
to watching things grow.<br />
Have you ever thought about gardening<br />
God’s way? I was given a planting list on how<br />
to plant a “spiritual garden.” I’d like to pass it<br />
along to you. Even if you don’t have time to<br />
tend a garden of plants, caring for your spiritual<br />
garden is essential. Here’s how:<br />
First, you plant three rows of “peas”:<br />
• Peace of mind;<br />
• Peace of heart; and<br />
• Peace of soul.<br />
Second, plant four rows of “squash”:<br />
• Squash gossip;<br />
• Squash indifference;<br />
• Squash grumbling; and<br />
• Squash selfishness.<br />
Third, plant four rows of “lettuce”:<br />
• Let us be faithful;<br />
• Let us be kind;<br />
• Let us be obedient; and<br />
• Let us love one another.<br />
Of course, no spiritual garden is complete<br />
without “turnips”:<br />
• Turn up for meetings;<br />
• Turn up for service or work;<br />
• Turn up to help one another;<br />
• Turn up with a smile, even when things<br />
are complex; and<br />
• Turn up with determination to do your<br />
very best.<br />

patience and cultivate it with love. There will<br />
be lots of fruit and vegetables in your garden<br />
because you reap what you sow.<br />
To round out your garden, you must have<br />
“thyme”:<br />
• Time for God;<br />
• Time for prayer and study; and<br />
• Time for self, family, and friends.<br />
After all this planting, we need to “grow in<br />
grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and<br />
Savior Jesus Christ” (II Peter 3:18).<br />
Now isn’t that the best garden you ever<br />
planted? We must start planting good in<br />
our lives to share this “garden” of information<br />
with others. If all our gardens were well<br />
kept, there would be less evil and hatred in<br />
our daily lives. When we plant a seed, it will<br />
produce whatever we have planted.<br />
Pull the weeds out of your garden so nothing<br />
can harm your fruit or vegetables. Even<br />
if you start with just one seed, it will produce<br />
more than one fruit. Remember, every garden<br />
is planted with many types of seeds, and<br />
as we “water” those seeds, they sprout and<br />

Brain check: Are you OK? Dealing with seasonal depression<br />

Hello, my Over-the-Toppers! Welcome<br />
to another week of your favorite column.<br />
Usually I’d write about some out-ofthis-world<br />
topic, but this time I want to<br />
go a more serious route. I’m checking in<br />
to see how you all are — physically, emotionally<br />
and, most importantly, mentally.<br />
This week, we’re going to discuss seasonal<br />
depression. I know mental health<br />
can be a touchy topic, but it’s an important<br />
topic. To end the stigma surrounding<br />
mental health, we must talk about it,<br />
learn about it, seek help when we suffer<br />
from it, and understand it and the people<br />
who live with it. Not talking about mental<br />
health does not make it go away.<br />
With autumn around the corner, this<br />
is my favorite time of the year. The bugs<br />
have gone to the underworld (and by<br />
bugs, I mean spiders), and it’s time for<br />
carnivals, festivals, pumpkin patches, hot<br />
chocolate, football, cozy outfits, spooky<br />
season and so much more. It all makes<br />
me so happy and excited this time of year!<br />
However, I know autumn and winter<br />
also bring Seasonal Affective Disorder<br />
(SAD).<br />
So, is SAD a real thing? It sure is! SAD<br />
is affects almost 10 million Americans,<br />
mostly women, young adults and those<br />
who live the farthest from the equator. The<br />
most common time for SAD symptoms to<br />
occur is during the fall and winter months,<br />
more so the winter months when there is<br />
less natural sunlight — but it can happen<br />
in spring and summer as well. With colder<br />
temperatures and some bad weather, being<br />
indoors for extended periods of time<br />
becomes a deep burden for some people.<br />
SAD can impact everything from physical<br />
and mental health to your professional<br />
and social life. If someone in your<br />
family has been diagnosed with SAD, you<br />
are more likely to develop it.<br />
You need to know the symptoms of<br />
SAD so you are aware and can help if<br />
you or someone you know may be experiencing<br />
it. If you notice any of these<br />
symptoms, in yourself or a loved one,<br />
that persists for more than two weeks, it<br />
could be seasonal depression. Here are<br />
the symptoms of SAD:<br />
• A sad or anxious mood.<br />
• Feeling hopeless or worthless, or experiencing<br />
persistent fatigue.<br />
• Having little or no interest in activities<br />
you usually enjoy.<br />
• Feeling restless or irritable.<br />
• Difficulty with concentration, decision-making<br />
or memory.<br />
• Trouble falling asleep or sleeping<br />
too much,<br />
• Weight gain.<br />
• Thinking about suicide.<br />
• Pains, headaches or digestive upset<br />
with no apparent cause or relief.<br />
It is also important to be careful of<br />
self-diagnosis or diagnosing someone<br />
else. Having some of these symptoms<br />
doesn’t definitively mean you or the<br />
other person has seasonal depression.<br />

will have all of these symptoms.<br />
To be diagnosed with SAD, you first<br />
must meet the criteria for major depression<br />
occurring during a specific season<br />
for at least two years. If you notice any of<br />
these changes in yourself or a loved one,<br />
the earlier help is sought, the better.<br />
So, how is SAD treated? You might<br />
have seen a friend or co-worker break<br />
out a sunlight projection at their desk or<br />
in their home. Light therapy (also called<br />
phototherapy) is a primary treatment for<br />
SAD. With this treatment, a device, such<br />
as a sun lamp or light box, simulates outdoor<br />
sunshine. You can turn it on for a set<br />
time several times a day to get a dose of<br />
Vitamin D. Other treatments may include<br />
vitamin D supplements, psychotherapy<br />
and medications such as antidepressants.<br />
Recognizing that you are experiencing<br />
depression or other mental illnesses is<br />
nothing to be ashamed of. Seeking help<br />
for your mental health is nothing to be<br />
ashamed of. Getting the help you need<br />
for your mental health is nothing to be<br />
ashamed of. If you notice SAD symptoms<br />
in you, reach out to your doctor or a behavioral/mental<br />
health clinic and find<br />
the treatment plan that’s right for you.<br />
If you’re concerned about yourself or<br />
a loved one having suicidal thoughts,<br />
don’t delay seeking help. Help is available<br />
24 hours, seven days a week, with<br />
the National Suicide Prevention Hotline<br />
at 800-273-8255.<br />
