Millions of eager college 

students across the country 

are starting a new school year. 

The excitement is electric on 

and around campuses, but 

to help ensure students have 

a year full of learning and 

fun, it’s an important time to 

brush up on student safety. 

While primarily a space 

for education, enrichment 

and community, college 

campuses, unfortunately, 

can also be a place where 

crimes and other incidents 

occur. According to Clery 

Act Reports, an average 

of over 24,000 crime 

and safety incidents have 

been reported annually 

on college campuses since 

2009. These include: 

• 2,411 robberies were 

reported on average 

annually; 

• 1,840 fires were 

reported on average 

annually; and 

• 20,521 burglaries 

were reported on average 

annually. 

Students living in offcampus 

housing face a 

similar situation. No matter 

where you live, it’s important 

to be proactive about things 

like theft, fire and crime so 

that people of all ages can 

feel secure while at school. 

Theft prevention 

Students bring many 

things to college, including 

expensive items like laptops, 

smartphones and bikes. 

Always be aware of your 

surroundings and protect 

your things whenever 

possible by taking a few 

simple steps. 

For example, consider 

getting your laptop engraved 

with your name, use complex 

passwords and only take 

it with you when needed.

Reaping what you sow: Plant seeds of goodness in your spiritual garden

How many of you have a vegetable garden? 

Even though your summer garden may 

only be a memory now, you may be planning 

your winter plantings, or even mapping out 

plans for next spring. 

I love watching those seeds become fruits 

or vegetables for my table. Oh, the joy of 

watching things burst into life and savoring 

the bounty of the harvest! Nothing can compare 

to watching things grow. 

Have you ever thought about gardening 

God’s way? I was given a planting list on how 

to plant a “spiritual garden.” I’d like to pass it 

along to you. Even if you don’t have time to 

tend a garden of plants, caring for your spiritual 

garden is essential. Here’s how: 

First, you plant three rows of “peas”: 

• Peace of mind; 

• Peace of heart; and 

• Peace of soul. 

Second, plant four rows of “squash”: 

• Squash gossip; 

• Squash indifference; 

• Squash grumbling; and 

• Squash selfishness. 

Third, plant four rows of “lettuce”: 

• Let us be faithful; 

• Let us be kind; 

• Let us be obedient; and 

• Let us love one another. 

Of course, no spiritual garden is complete 

without “turnips”: 

• Turn up for meetings; 

• Turn up for service or work; 

• Turn up to help one another; 

• Turn up with a smile, even when things 

are complex; and 

• Turn up with determination to do your 

very best.

patience and cultivate it with love. There will 

be lots of fruit and vegetables in your garden 

because you reap what you sow. 

To round out your garden, you must have 

“thyme”: 

• Time for God; 

• Time for prayer and study; and 

• Time for self, family, and friends. 

After all this planting, we need to “grow in 

grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and 

Savior Jesus Christ” (II Peter 3:18). 

Now isn’t that the best garden you ever 

planted? We must start planting good in 

our lives to share this “garden” of information 

with others. If all our gardens were well 

kept, there would be less evil and hatred in 

our daily lives. When we plant a seed, it will 

produce whatever we have planted. 

Pull the weeds out of your garden so nothing 

can harm your fruit or vegetables. Even 

if you start with just one seed, it will produce 

more than one fruit. Remember, every garden 

is planted with many types of seeds, and 

as we “water” those seeds, they sprout and

Hello, my Over-the-Toppers! Welcome 

to another week of your favorite column. 

Usually I’d write about some out-ofthis-world 

topic, but this time I want to 

go a more serious route. I’m checking in 

to see how you all are — physically, emotionally 

and, most importantly, mentally. 

This week, we’re going to discuss seasonal 

depression. I know mental health 

can be a touchy topic, but it’s an important 

topic. To end the stigma surrounding 

mental health, we must talk about it, 

learn about it, seek help when we suffer 

from it, and understand it and the people 

who live with it. Not talking about mental 

health does not make it go away. 

With autumn around the corner, this 

is my favorite time of the year. The bugs 

have gone to the underworld (and by 

bugs, I mean spiders), and it’s time for 

carnivals, festivals, pumpkin patches, hot 

chocolate, football, cozy outfits, spooky 

season and so much more. It all makes 

me so happy and excited this time of year! 

However, I know autumn and winter 

also bring Seasonal Affective Disorder 

(SAD). 

So, is SAD a real thing? It sure is! SAD 

is affects almost 10 million Americans, 

mostly women, young adults and those 

who live the farthest from the equator. The 

most common time for SAD symptoms to 

occur is during the fall and winter months, 

more so the winter months when there is 

less natural sunlight — but it can happen 

in spring and summer as well. With colder 

temperatures and some bad weather, being 

indoors for extended periods of time 

becomes a deep burden for some people. 

SAD can impact everything from physical 

and mental health to your professional 

and social life. If someone in your 

family has been diagnosed with SAD, you 

are more likely to develop it. 

You need to know the symptoms of 

SAD so you are aware and can help if 

you or someone you know may be experiencing 

it. If you notice any of these 

symptoms, in yourself or a loved one, 

that persists for more than two weeks, it 

could be seasonal depression. Here are 

the symptoms of SAD: 

• A sad or anxious mood. 

• Feeling hopeless or worthless, or experiencing 

persistent fatigue. 

• Having little or no interest in activities 

you usually enjoy. 

• Feeling restless or irritable. 

• Difficulty with concentration, decision-making 

or memory. 

• Trouble falling asleep or sleeping 

too much, 

• Weight gain. 

• Thinking about suicide. 

• Pains, headaches or digestive upset 

with no apparent cause or relief. 

It is also important to be careful of 

self-diagnosis or diagnosing someone 

else. Having some of these symptoms 

doesn’t definitively mean you or the 

other person has seasonal depression.

will have all of these symptoms. 

To be diagnosed with SAD, you first 

must meet the criteria for major depression 

occurring during a specific season 

for at least two years. If you notice any of 

these changes in yourself or a loved one, 

the earlier help is sought, the better. 

So, how is SAD treated? You might 

have seen a friend or co-worker break 

out a sunlight projection at their desk or 

in their home. Light therapy (also called 

phototherapy) is a primary treatment for 

SAD. With this treatment, a device, such 

as a sun lamp or light box, simulates outdoor 

sunshine. You can turn it on for a set 

time several times a day to get a dose of 

Vitamin D. Other treatments may include 

vitamin D supplements, psychotherapy 

and medications such as antidepressants. 

Recognizing that you are experiencing 

depression or other mental illnesses is 

nothing to be ashamed of. Seeking help 

for your mental health is nothing to be 

ashamed of. Getting the help you need 

for your mental health is nothing to be 

ashamed of. If you notice SAD symptoms 

in you, reach out to your doctor or a behavioral/mental 

health clinic and find 

the treatment plan that’s right for you. 

If you’re concerned about yourself or 

a loved one having suicidal thoughts, 

don’t delay seeking help. Help is available 

24 hours, seven days a week, with 

the National Suicide Prevention Hotline 

at 800-273-8255.

trusted neighbor collect them 

for you. 

• Make sure interior lights and 

electronics are on timers. 

This will give your home the 

appearance of being occupied. 

Exterior lighting can usually 

be equipped with a photocell 

that will activate lighting 

automatically. 

• Park your vehicle in a welllighted 

area. Remove all 

items from the vehicle (CD’s, 

backpacks, cell phones, 

purses, currency). 

• Have someone you know 

check on your vehicle and 

home. If you live in an 

apartment, contact your 

apartment manager or leasing
