Zonta conference inspiring women
MORE THAN 160 business
and professional women from
throughout New Zealand
will be in Christchurch later
this month for the biennial
Zonta International District 16
Conference.
Well-known locally for
activities like the annual Zonta
Sports Awards, recognising
secondary school sportspeople,
and the Yellow Rose Run/Walk
(coming up on October 8 in
Hagley Park), Zonta has 27 clubs
nationwide. Their goal is to
build a better world for women
and girls, locally, nationally and
worldwide, through service and
advocacy.
District 16 Governor Phillippa
Jacobs-Lory, a member of the
Zonta Club of Christchurch-
Canterbury
says the
national
conference
this weekend
provides a
chance for
like-minded
women to
learn, to
network, and
to be reinvigorated.
“It’s an honour to be holding
the conference here – Deputy
Mayor Pauline Cotter is going
to open the programme – and
the whole weekend has been
designed to be inspiring for
LIGHTS: As part of the ‘Zonta says no to violence against women’ campaign, Christchurch buildings have previously been
lit up in orange.
everyone. Zontians in New
Zealand are doing terrific work
for women and girls, here and
overseas. Our power lies in the
fact that we’re an international
organisation with the ability
to support programmes
worldwide,” she said.
“This conference is going
to provide an opportunity for
us to learn more about our
advocacy work for women’s
rights and how we are making
a tangible difference for many
Trust chief executive Kate
Bundle will give a summary of
the specific projects funded and
the outcomes delivered and a
“surprise” keynote speaker will
highlight topical issues during
the weekend.
“Close to Zonta’s heart is
the ‘Zonta says no to violence
against women’ campaign,” said
Bundle.
“We’re strongly involved each
November 25
to December
10 with the
16 days of
advocacy
surrounding
this campaign
and its use
orange to
represent a brighter future. In the
HEAT PUMP
“A local team for local people”
past we’ve had various buildings,
including the control tower
at Christchurch International
Airport, Canterbury Museum
and the Christchurch Art
Gallery, lit up in orange during
this time.
“At conference we’re taking
this a step further by asking
everyone who attends to bring a
pair of orange shoes to serve as a
symbol representing the women
who have tragically lost their
lives due to domestic violence.”
