A SUCCESSFUL season
by Ferrymead Bays’ senior
women’s team was recognised
at the club’s senior prizegiving
on Saturday night at the
Matuku Takotako: Sumner
Centre.
With just one loss all season,
the team secured the division
one grade convincingly. They
conceded four goals throughout
their eight games.
Their coach Neil Warburton
was rewarded for his efforts by
claiming the club’s coach of the
year award.
The team’s top goal scorer,
Lucy Goodwin, was awarded
player of the year, while Robyn
Warburton was voted player’s
player. Fellow teammate Milly
Musset was awarded the Bays’
personality of the year.
Division 2 player Russell
Kamo took home the club’s
golden boot award. He scored
35 goals throughout 17 matches
at an average of 2.06 a game.
Meanwhile, Paul White,
Chris Murphy and Gerard
Cleary were presented with
Governors
Bay jetty
jump to
make
history
• By Sasha Watson
WOULD YOU pay $1100 to jump
into freezing cold water?
Well, the Canterbury Open
Water Swimming Association has
– and it is all for a good cause.
The association made the
winning bid in an online auction
through Trade Me, set up by
Governors Bay Jetty Restoration
Trust, with all funds from the
winning bid going towards the
rebuild costs of the jetty.
After 12 long years, the grand
opening of the Governors Bay jetty
will take place on Saturday, and
the association will be the first
group to officially “jetty jump” off
the new jetty.
“We’re a large group of swimmers
with a bit of presence in
Governors Bay, and plan on having
about 10 swimmers participate
in the jump,” said association
member Katie Lucas.
“Because we swim all year
round, there are no problems
about how cold the water may
be on the morning of the grand
opening.”
JETTY JUMP: A popular spot for summer dips before it
was closed 12 years ago, the first group to jump off the
new Governors Bay jetty will be the Canterbury Open
Water Swimming Association.
Jump for joy
• From page 1
The jumpers will meet at the
jetty at 6am on Saturday, with
the jump taking place just after
high tide at 6.15am.
“We thought the jetty was
a great cause to support, and
would love the chance to be a
part of it,” said Lucas.
“Last night, with the bids
going up before we had placed
our final bid, was very nailbiting.”
The jump will be recognised
with a permanent plaque on the
jetty, with the group’s name,
followed by the words, “First
official jetty jump 30 September
2023”.
After the jump, there will be
a chance to watch the sunrise
over the harbour and enjoy
Young chef propelled
into the limelight
PAN FRIED Murray cod
helped Joosje Bouman stand
out in a prestigious chef
competition in Sydney.
The 22-year-old St Albans
resident was awarded three
bronze medals, one for each
of her courses, at the Nestlé
Golden Chef’s Hat Award
competition.
It was her first time competing
at the grand finals.
Bouman won the South Island
regional heat of the competition
earlier this year.
She decided to enter the
competition because of the
TASTY: One of Joosje
Bouman’s courses that
helped her take three
bronze medals – pan fried
Murray cod.
opportunity it presented to
further her skills and connect
with other young chefs.
Bouman, who works as a
sous chef at Kaisar Brew Garden,
impressed the judges with
the execution and delivery of
her three-course menu to earn
the haul of bronze medals.
She was up against 11 other
young top chefs from across
Australia and New Zealand
who were all vying to be
crowned Golden Chef of the
Year. Along with the other
competitors, she had to develop
and perfect a three course
menu in the lead up to the live
cook off.
Bouman’s menu was a ravioli
entrée with a homemade
ricotta and spinach mix on a
tomato base sauce, served with
a shaved asparagus salad. Her
main was pan-fried Murray
cod, served with a beurre
blanc, gremolata, pickled
mushroom, and crispy potatoes.
For dessert, she created a
frangipane, caramelised pear,
caramel sauce, macadamia,
and oat crumb served with a
tuille.
FOCUS: Joosje
third course
– a caramel
frangipane
dessert.
Chef judge Darren Wright
said being part of the Golden
Chef’s Hat competition gives
the next generation of chefs
like Bouman the opportunity
to put themselves to the test,
improve their cooking skills
and connect with like-minded
chefs as well as the broader
industry.
“Joosje delivered some stand
out dishes on the day while
under immense pressure. Just
to make it this far and then to
win medals is a tremendous
achievement that she should
be hugely proud of,” he said.
The overall winner of the
event was Melbourne chef
Jimmy Han.
Hospital Harry turns 12
• By Sasha Watson
HARRY IS a favourite among
staff, visitors and patients at
Burwood Hospital.
When he turned 12 recently,
he got what every cat dreams
of: Many cans of tuna – as well
as fan mail from all over the
country, birthday cards, cat toys,
and treats.
Harry has been a popular and
permanent fixture at the hospital
for about nine years.
“We spent the first year with
Harry, who was about three at
the time, trying to get him back
home. He decided he’d like to
live at the hospital and never
left,” said primary carer, clinical
manager of occupational therapy
Cherie Porter.
The fluffy, long-haired moggy
once belonged to a family who
lived nearby, but they officially
gifted Harry to the hospital after
he decided that living there was
more fun than going home.
“Harry is very good at finding
the people who need him most.
He is very tolerant, he often gets
pestered multiple times a day by
patients but he never hisses, or
bites,” said Porter.
“He will sit next to those
feeling anxious before an
appointment – he’s just a lovelynatured
cat who is perfect for a
hospital environment.”
Porter said Harry brings
a sense of homeliness and
reassurance to a traumatic and
daunting situation, and he puts
people at ease.
“Patients often try to find
him during the day to pet, he’s
become a source of motivation as
well,” said Porter.
Occupational therapy assistant
Michael Keown said Harry has
become a therapy cat to many
recovering from mental health
issues and dubbed him “the
coolest cat in town”.
“He offers a sensory experience
to those who have closed
off parts of their emotional
wellness,” Keown said.
Occupational therapist Pip
Dow is another of Harry’s carers.
“A lot of people are surprised
to see a cat in a hospital,” she
said.
“But Harry is well-received, so
well received in fact, he has been
put on a special diet for many
years due to being very good
work and involve the community’
Aikawa’s creative side was
first nurtured at Mt Pleasant
School.
A teacher spoke about Aikawa
painting art on a graffiti-prone
fence.
“At the time I was fascinated by
the dual purpose of art, looking
beautiful and stopping a problem,”
she said.
“Ten years later, when the same
fence was getting tagged again, I
approached the homeowners and
volunteered to paint (Oli’s) mural
on the site.”
Aikawa has also brought art
to the community with murals
at Christ’s College, a Redcliffs
electric box and his university
halls of residence dining room in
Wellington.
There is also a project in the
works for the Sumner Community
Hub.
“Hopefully it will be this summer.
It will be art where families
paint by numbers to beautify the
wall and also a chance to bring
everyone together,” he said.
Aikawa’s focus is now on the
exhibition at Christ’s College.
“I wanted to highlight boys’ art,
to promote the creative side for
boys,” he said.
“My school has been very
supportive, and art has been a real
positive in my life. I really want
to bring art to the forefront for
young people.”
Beat the Itch at Kōwhai Vet
Hurrah! Spring is here! Longer days,
warmer weather, what’s not to love?
Unfortunately, as some of us know all too
well, spring also brings the not-so-fun stuff
like itchy throats, runny noses, and puffy red
eyes. Just as hayfever plagues us humans, our
pets might be facing their own allergy battles.
Does your dog have a sudden obsession with
chewing their paws, licking their tummy, or
scratching their ears? Has your cat become
particularly attentive to their grooming?
These are all common signs of allergic skin
disease in pets.
So what’s going on? Everyday allergens
floating around in the air, residing in your
home, or even hiding in their food, start a
chain of events that cause your pet’s immune
system to go into overdrive, sending it into
battle against these (mostly) harmless
allergens. This overzealous response leads
to itching that can be downright miserable
Dust Mites
Some common allergens
Pollen
Fleas
Grass
and distracting. If you’ve ever had an itch you
couldn’t scratch, you know the struggle is
real. The sad truth is, there’s usually no quick
fix – just ask parents dealing with a child’s
eczema!
What causes these pesky pet allergies? Well,
it’s a bit of a puzzle with many pieces:
• Breed: Some breeds are more prone to
allergies than others, thanks to genetics.
• Environment: Where your pet lives, walks,
and what they’re exposed to indoors and
outdoors can play a role.
• Immune System: How well your pet’s
immune system handles allergens like
pollen, food, grasses, mites, and parasites
matters.
• Skin Microorganisms: Yes, your pet has tiny
roommates on their skin, and when they
get out of balance, trouble can brew.
To make matters more complicated, itchy
pets often end up with an imbalance in their
skin microorganisms (think bacteria and
yeast). We call this “dysbiosis”. These critters
that usually hang around in very low numbers
not causing any mischief, start to overgrow
taking over from the healthy skin flora. In
larger numbers they start to contribute to
more skin inflammation, which leads to more
scratching and a vicious cycle of itchiness
with a sad and uncomfortable furball in the
middle of it all.
But fear not! At Kōwhai Vet, we have a special
interest in pet dermatology, and we’ve got
your back (and your pet’s itch!).
These beautiful doggy skincare
products will add a touch of class to
your precious pooch’s skincare routine
and leave them smelling delectable.
PORT NEWS
New CEO
appointed
for Lyttelton
Port
The Board of LPC has
announced the appointment
of Graeme Sumner as the
Port's new Chief Executive
Officer.
Graeme was most recently an advisor and
consultant to multiple companies and
boards, and up until June 2022, he was the
CEO of Airways New Zealand, the Stateowned
enterprise (SOE) responsible for the
management and control of New Zealand’s
airspace, as well as having an extensive
international business providing products
and services to 33 countries worldwide.
Graeme started at LPC on Wednesday 20
September 2023.
LPC Chair Barry Bragg says Graeme is a
seasoned Chief Executive with a track
record in turning around and growing
companies across a number of industries,
and the board is delighted to announce his
appointment to LPC.
“Graeme brings strong operational
leadership capability, having led over 4,000
employees and contractors at Service
Stream and nearly 3,500 at Transfield.
He understands critical infrastructure
businesses with significant capital
programmes,” says Barry.
“Graeme led Service Stream to become
the largest installer of smart metering
systems across Australia’s electricity sector
and navigated the construction of two new
air traffic control centres in Auckland and
Christchurch with Airways New Zealand.”
“Graeme has also worked in a public
sector environment and is committed to
building on the long-term social and
economic value of LPC.”
Graeme says he’s looking forward to
leading LPC and becoming a part of the
Port family.
“LPC is a Port with a long and proud
history, and I recognise the important part
it plays in both the economic and social and
fabric of the Canterbury region,” says Graeme.
“I’m excited to be involved in an
organisation that is so critical to the success
of the South Island and wider New Zealand.
I’m also pleased I’m able to get my feet on the
ground at LPC so quickly.”
Before joining Airways New Zealand in
2017, Graeme held various leadership roles in
New Zealand and Australia, including
Managing Director of Service Stream,
Managing Director of Transfield Services
New Zealand and Managing Director of
Siemens New Zealand. Earlier, Graeme held
General Manager level roles with
New Zealand Post, Contact Energy and
Telecom.
Graeme started his career in Sweden and the
UK working for IBM. He holds a Bachelor of
Commerce from the University of Auckland,
and an MBA from Massey University.
OUR PEOPLE
Barry Bragg takes
the top seat
Board Chair Barry Bragg
joined our whānau in April
and since then, has been
working closely with our
Executive Leadership Team
to understand LPC’s strategic
direction and priorities.
“There has been quite a significant change in
the last 10 years, so I’m looking forward to
getting on and doing our mahi,” says Barry.
“It’s a privilege to pick up the work that
has already taken place and move it forward.”
Barry has whakapapa to Ngāi Tahu and
has been involved with a multitude of
companies in the public sector, iwi sector
and private sector at a director or chair
level – including the Chair of Te Kaha,
Christchurch’s new stadium.
Joining Barry are seven other Directors
with a diverse range of backgrounds and
industry experience.
“Right now we are coming together as a
team. It’s really important for me that how
the Board operates sets the scene in terms of
the leadership and values that we show at
Lyttelton Port.
“We’re here to support management to
run the business. We need to lean on all
the experience that the Board has to help
management to continuously improve
our operations.” However, Barry is no
stranger to the Port.
“I was the International Marketing
Manager and Chief Operating Officer at
Solid Energy and have spent a lot of time
coming out to the coal yard since 1997.”
Having then built up a career in
mining, Barry also has a strong focus on
health and safety.
“It is a big factor for me, it’s part of our
DNA. Business is all about people, and
we need to look after each other.”
Licence to operate is also essential
to Barry, saying the community and Te
Hapū o Ngāti Wheke as manawhenua,
expect us to look after our people, the
community and the environment. Barry
also said he is looking forward to meeting
more of our stakeholders at LPC’s Annual
General Meeting at the end of October.
While Barry has things in his shortterm
sight, he also is looking to the
future.
“We need to think about the longterm
strategy for the Port and how we
continue to be the trade gateway for the
South Island.”
Steel used to build
Te Kaha, at Champion
Freight’s Woolston site.
PORT NEWS
Steeling a
glimpse of the
stadium
Christchurch's resurgence
following the earthquakes
continues to take shape
with the rise of Te Kaha,
Canterbury’s Multi-Use
Arena.
LPC has worked alongside local company
Champion Freight to facilitate the
transportation of steel for the stadium.
Dave Ireton, LPC Operations Manager, said
the steel is fabricated in China and shipped on
flat racks and inside standard containers.
Lyttelton is one of the last stops for the
steel beams before they head through the
Lyttelton Tunnel for the Champion Freight
team to unload, store and package at their
Woolston site before being trucked to the
construction site.
“We are very proud to be playing a part
in the construction of the new stadium,
and our team work with Champion and the
trucking firms to get the steel components
off the vessels and to the construction site on
schedule,” said Dave.
Champion Freight's Managing Director,
Hamish Gain, emphasised that the project
is in its initial phases but anticipates its
momentum will surge as construction
advances. He expressed their commitment to
transporting over 900 containers within 18 to
24 months.
Describing the challenges of the project,
Hamish remarked, “efficiently stacking
the steel in the yard to ensure its timely
availability feels akin to assembling a
complex jigsaw puzzle.”
Reflecting on the company's roots, he
added, “as a company that originated in
Christchurch over two decades ago, it's truly
special for us to be a part of this project,
which holds significant importance in the
city's rebuild.”
The 30,000-seat new stadium with a roof
cover is located in the heart of Christchurch
for $683 million.
The bowl’s structure steel construction
with the western and southern stand is well
underway and will hold tiered seats.
Oversized structural steel components will
be delivered over the coming months, with
the stadium due for completion in 2025.
ENVIRONMENT
‘Natural
partnership’
with BPCT
The Banks Peninsula
Conservation Trust (BPCT)
has its sights set on its 2050
ecological vision, and as the
principal sponsor, LPC is
committed to the journey.
The recently refreshed vision has two new
goals, taking the total to 10.
These goals provide a roadmap and cover
pest management, ecosystems, and protection
of indigenous flora and fauna, among others.
BPCT General Manager Maree Burnett says
the organisation has grown enormously in
the last five years, so now they are working to
embed the plan they have.
The trust is currently running seven
programs of work – one of these being habitat
protection.
“We currently have 101 covenants in place
over the Banks Ecological Region covering
1609ha in total,” says Maree.
This includes the covenant LPC signed to
protect 11.4 hectares of land above Gollans Bay
Quarry.
Another section of work has been
volunteer programs the trust runs.
“The hugely successful partnership
around the Port Saddle continues to provide
significant community benefits as the area's
biodiversity is enhanced through ecological
restoration.”
At this year's annual planting day,
volunteers planted 300 trees on the saddle.
This work has also been recognised by
the Sustainable Awards with the BPCT and
LPC finalists in the Regenerating Nature
category of Aotearoa New Zealand's leading
sustainability awards.
The relationship between LPC and BPCT is
significant to both parties.
“Over the years, as an organisation, we have
got really confident that the Port has some
clear goals around sustainability and is taking
a particular interest in biodiversity. I think it
makes for a really natural partnership.
“There is no doubt that the financial
contribution is significant; it provides us
certainty and allows us to cover some of
our operational costs, which gives us the
structure to complete the range of work.
“The Port Saddle and Gollans Bay are
great examples of how we can also partner
in a meaningful way on the ground to
deliver projects that are beneficial for the
community and have a positive biodiversity
outcome.”
While Maree says all the projects are
inspirational in their own way, the best part
of the job is the people she engages with.
“Everyone we work with without
exception is a wonderful person trying to do
good things – and that makes it enormously
positive.
“Whether that’s a school child engaging
in the education programme or a landowner
who wants to protect a remnant for future
generations or a Lyttelton resident who is
excited because they have seen a tui in their
fruit tree for the first time.”
Maree says the community’s dedication is
encouraging, and she continues to welcome
support from the locals.
“Through experience, we know that the
Banks Peninsula community really cares
about their environment. Certainly, any
support that people can offer the trust is
well received in terms of volunteer time or
one-off/ongoing donations.”
Habitat protection
Delivered through conservation covenants, an agreement with
landowners to provide a legacy and gift for future generations
through perpetual protection.
Volunteer programme
Hundreds of volunteers carry out restoration work on multiple
sites around the peninsula. Working with schools, corporate
groups, not-for-profit groups and community members.
Tui translocation
Two populations of tui were translocated over 10 years ago.
A highly successful community monitoring programme continues
for the tui, and to date, 18,290 community observations of the birds
have been reported. There are now well more than 200 banded
birds, which allows easy identification of individuals and modelling
of the population growth.
Biodiversity hubs
The trust is currently working on three hubs, of at least 1000
hectares of contiguous habitat that are legally protected and
collaboratively managed for biodiversity outcomes. These hubs
include summit-to-sea protection to support species susceptible
to the impacts of climate change.
Pest-free Banks Peninsula
The trust facilitates the work agreed upon by 14 partners to
remove pests from the peninsula to a level that no longer impacts
biodiversity. This includes possums, mustelids, feral cats, goats
and pigs.
A recent highlight was after years of a collaborative effort by
the trust, Christchurch City Council, Department of Conservation,
Environment Canterbury and landowners; feral goats have been
completely removed from Banks Peninsula up to Gebbies Pass.
Community engagement and education programme
Working with almost all the schools in the peninsula, landowners,
and the public. Supporting the learning about biodiversity and
special treasures found in the peninsula.
Farm biodiversity support programme
A new programme which has just launched, the trust is looking
to create resources available for every farmer on the peninsula to
engage with, providing support around planning for biodiversity
management.
LPC UPDATE September 2023 3

OUR PEOPLE
Luke Lockton leaves
LPC, with his grandad
starting here in 1952.
Ending of the Lockton legacy
The 71-year legacy of Lockton’s
at the Port has ended. After
12 years at LPC, Health and
Safety Business Partner Luke
Lockton is leaving, ending
what his grandfather began
in 1952.
Starting as a part time cargo handler in 2011,
he soon went full-time before eventually
becoming a member of the health and
safety team.
“It is leaving behind a huge part of my life;
LPC is a massive part of our family. It’s been
a good twelve years, and I have a lot of fond
memories of the place for sure,” says Luke.
Luke’s grandfather worked at LPC for 34
years, with his father starting in 1972 and was
here for 44 years.
“For a pretty big part of that, there’s been
two; grandad worked with Dad for a number
of years, then he left, and I started and worked
with my father.”
Growing up in Governors Bay, Luke was a
local at the Port long before he worked here.
“It was a great place to grow up; when we
weren’t in the sea, we were up in the hills.
“One of the go-to activities for birthday
parties was to come down and fish off the
inner harbour wharves.”
With different safety standards in the 90s,
Luke would spend time in operational areas
with his Dad.
“When my old man would be doing lines
jobs, I’d be down on the wharf with all the
guys – before us, health and safety people
stopped that.
“We would go down to coal and go in the
front-end loaders, even up straddles and up
the cranes cause my dad was a crane driver for
most of his time here.”
Part of why he joined the port was the
good memories he had here – his childhood
cementing the decision.
“I left school and went to university and did
that for a couple of years, but it wasn’t for me.
Then I started plumbing, which was cool, but
again, the port was an itch I had to scratch.
“I always saw myself coming to the port, so
eventually, I just decided I’m going to do it.”
Since joining in 2011, Luke has held several
roles. “As a cargo handler, I became a health
and safety rep, and then I became the chair for
the container terminal.”
While working a secondment, a full-time
position came up, and he was recommended
to apply.
“That’s the thing you keep in your head;
you just never know what little changes you
help make, or you’re part of that might have
prevented something that was potentially
going to happen one day.”
Health and safety has changed significantly
in his time at the Port in both the culture and
the investment in infrastructure.
“When I started here, we were safety
conscious, but it wasn’t as front of mind
as it is now; very seldom would you hear
health and safety conversations happening
in the amenities; now it’s very common to
hear people discussing hazards or potential
improvements.
“The investment in infrastructure has also
significantly increased, particularly with
the focus on designing the risk out. The new
workshop, the inner harbour development,
the CityDepot upgrades, and the reefer towers
are all great examples of this.
“These two big changes alone mean LPC is
on a great path to becoming a healthy and safe
workplace”.
PORT NEWS
Te Whare
Whakatika
is open
The opening of LPC’s new
Te Whare Whakatika
workshop completes the
$85m Eastern Development
project.
The workshop was officially opened by
the Mayor of Christchurch, Phil Mauger,
at a special event at LPC in late August.
The $20m workshop houses 65 staff
and includes a 25m high service bay for
four straddles, workshop spaces, offices,
break rooms and amenities.
LPC Interim CEO Jim Quinn said he
was “thrilled with the facility that will
last for generations”.
“It’s a wonderful facility and takes our
people from the 1970s into 2023’” said Jim.
“When you renew infrastructure that
is to last a long time, it is essential you do
it well.”
The official opening was later followed
by a family day – for the first time in
many years, the family of staff were
invited to the Port to check out the fantastic
new facilities.
Families were able to see first-hand
the equipment their loved ones work on
including straddles, cranes and loaders.
how to dress, finding out the colours that suit you or understanding the right beauty
routine for the skin you have now, FEARLESS contains it all.
But the most important thing that I have come to know is that life is not just about
how we look – it’s about gaining the knowledge we need to navigate whatever life
throws at us. So, I’ve included a life section to share what I’ve learned along the way,
the everyday barriers that impact my confidence and how I feel. In each chapter I
set you a practical challenge, because there is a big difference between reading and
action – it is action that propels us and allows us to make positive change in your
own life. To represent the different ages, shapes, styles and attitudes I cover, the
inspiring Trinny Tribers from around the world have all come together to share too.
I very much hope this book will help and inspire you. I look forward to sharing this
new journey with you. We can all thrive and live fearlessly.
With practical fashion, beauty, health, and life advice, everyone will be able to
transform their self-confidence, to look and feel great in a holistic and inspiring, yet
achievable way.
Defender of Lyttelton:
Torpedo boat No 168
FOR MUCH of the 19th century the
British Empire was in fierce competition
with the Russian Empire, from Crimea
on the Black Sea to Central Asia and the
threshold of the British Raj on the Indian
subcontinent.
By the early 1800s, the growing reach of
the Imperial Russian Navy in the Pacific
theatre was causing concern as far afield as
Her Majesty Queen Victoria’s Australasian
colonies. In response, the British colonial
authorities in New Zealand began the
construction of coastal fortifications
around prominent ports, including the
Port of Lyttelton. This was accompanied
by the commissioning of four innovative
naval vessels, spar torpedo boats, to bolster
the coastal defences against the Russian
threat.
Torpedo Boat No 168, Defender, the
first of four defender-class Thornycroft
spar torpedo boats, was built in 1883 in
Chiswick, London by John I Thornycroft
& Co. Nineteen metres in length, she
displaced 12 imperial tons and was steampowered
with a 173hp (129kW) engine
propelling a top speed of 17.5 knots.
Armed with a McEvoy spar torpedo on her
bow, and a two-barrel Nordenfelt machine
gun, Defender was designed to ram and
explosively breach enemy warships below
their waterline.
She was delivered to New Zealand
in 1884 along with the Taiaroa (Port
Chalmers), Waitemata (Devonport),
and Poneke (Wellington). Defender was
stationed in the Port of Lyttelton and
initially moored off Gladstone Quay
with Harbourmaster and Naval Brigade
Captain Hugh McLellan commanding
a crew of 10 Lyttelton Naval Volunteers,
supported by five members of the Armed
Constabulary.
On January 1, 1885, Defender made her
public debut at the New Year’s Day Regatta
doing the rounds of the inner harbour to
the cheers of some 10,000 spectators.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 23
Restored torpedo boat on show
• From page 20
Later that year, at the height
of the “Russian Scare”, Defender
was moved to the newly
requisitioned defence reserve of
Bakers Bay.
Housed in a purpose-built
torpedo boat shed and slip
alongside the powder magazine
building – for which the
bay would later be renamed
Magazine Bay – the site was
positioned beneath the newly
constructed Fort Erskine gun
emplacement that also protected
the port’s inner harbour.
Unfortunately, design flaws
in the slip’s construction made
torpedo boat deployment
somewhat challenging (if not
impossible) during high tide or
inclement weather. This rather
fatal flaw, coupled with the
apparently onerous 20-minute
walk around to Bakers Bay from
Ōhinehou Lyttelton, meant
the Navals made little use of
Defender, and with no dedicated
engineer she soon rusted in her
shed.
This sorry state of military
affairs became embarrassingly
public in April 1886 when the
British Royal Navy’s Rear-
Admiral Robert Scott arrived in
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
to inspect the Colony’s coastal
defences.
Young boy in the remains of torpedo boat Defender’s
conning tower, Purau beach, early-to-mid 20th century
(cropped).
Te Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum ref. 4602.1
https://www.teuaka.org.nz/online-collection/666278
Informed that he would have
to wait a day or two for the
winds to calm before Defender
could be deployed, when he
finally boarded, her rusty
unmaintained engines manned
by an equally rusty crew could
only manage 12 knots, or the
“pace of a good passenger
launch”.
As the Lyttelton Times
quipped, a gigantic placard
should be erected on Godley
Head with the warning: “To
Russians and all others whom
it may concern. Hostile parties
wishing to shell the Port of
Lyttelton are requested to time
their visit for fine weather,
otherwise they cannot be
fittingly received by the
local authorities. Enemies
disregarding this notice are
hereby warned that they do
so at their own risk, peril, and
inconvenience.”
Nonetheless, after the Rear-
Admiral’s visit Defender was
upgraded with two Whitehead
mobile torpedoes later that
year and remained on duty in
Whakaraupō waters, moored by
the dry dock but still unused,
through to 1899.
By that time the threat of
war with the Russian Empire
had long waned, so she was
decommissioned and sold to
local steam boat operator Mark
Thomas, who salvaged parts and
left the hull at Purau beach for
generations of children to play
on. By 1958 the last remains of
the valiant Defender were lost to
the sands.
Four decades later, using 1958
aerial photography and military
assistance, David Bundy initiated
an excavation for what might
remain of the Defender at Purau
beach. Various hull and other
fragments were found, some
buried up to 30m deep, allowing
the boat to be partially restored,
albeit not to her original glory.
In 2003, the Lyttelton Torpedo
Boat Museum Charitable Trust
showcased the restored Defender
in the Thornycroft Torpedo Boat
Museum, housed in the historic
magazine building at Magazine
Bay.
Run by volunteers, the
museum is open on Sunday
afternoons during summer, with
torpedo boat No 168, Defender,
still at the ready some 140 years
after she was launched.
The role of cow, goat or sheep milk in
the nutrition and health of older women.
Milk provides important nutrients that help older people to maintain
muscle and bone health, and low milk intake is often associated with
poor nutrition in older adults.
We are looking for female volunteers aged 60 to 80 years to participate
in the YUMMI study, a 12-week research study investigating the health
effects of consuming different types milk – cow, goat, or sheep.
We will provide you with cow, goat or sheep milk powder to drink
twice a day for 12-weeks, or you will be asked to eat your normal diet
(control group). The time commitment for the study will be about 11
hours and you will attend five clinic visits. You will receive up to $220 in
supermarket vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs
involved with participating in this study (e.g. parking and/or travel costs).
Banks Peninsula
We have a wonderful electorate and have received record investment
in local projects and core services that I know we all rely on.
Together we’ve worked on and resolved many local issues, made real progress with the
organics plant and secured jobs for nature. I’ve enjoyed working with extraordinary community
groups and passionate locals who either raised concerns, or who simply shared good ideas to
pursue. But there’s always more to do, and I know that times are tough for many.
I want to build on the progress we’ve already made.
I’ve loved being a Government Whip and Chair of the Health Select Committee.
This October, I’m asking you to vote two ticks for Labour, so that I can continue what we’ve started
and remain your strong voice for Banks Peninsula.
A little of what has been
achieved in Banks Peninsula
1.
‘Jobs for Nature’ has supported some of the best conservation projects in Aotearoa right here
in Banks Peninsula. More than $16 million has been put to great use by local organisations and
rūnanga who are restoring whenua, controlling pests & building resilience in our environments.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Five of our schools participate in the Healthy School Lunch
programme. That's almost 1200 children eating a healthy lunch every
day and $7,000 a week back into the pocket of local families.
Over $4.5 million has been invested across 20 schools in the
Banks Peninsula electorate through the school investment package
for playground upgrades, infrastructure improvements, landscaping
and more.
Free public transport for children under 13 years, half-priced fares for
under 25 years and community services card holders.
Since 2017 superannuation has increased by $327 per fortnight,
per couple.
7.
We’ve funded the City Council to deliver millions of dollars worth of
upcoming road safety improvements in Woolston and Bromley.
Including a cycle link to make it safer for students to bike to
Te Aratai College along Aldwins / Ensors Roads.
8.
Thanks to our shovel-ready funding the final section of the Coastal Pathway is almost completed.
Focus on the cost of living.
I know that times are tough for many people. As a single parent of two boys, I often struggled to stretch the
household budget far enough. The good news is that the economy is picking up and, in the meantime, we’re
focusing on ways to support people with the cost of living and making it a little easier for everyone.
Remove GST from
fruit and vege.
Families will save
around $20 a month from
April 2024, making
healthy eating easier.
Free dental care
for under
30-year-olds.
Basic dental care will be
phased in until free for
everyone,
Expand 20 hours
free Early Childhood
Education
to 2-year-olds.
Saving parents an average of
$133 a eek
from March 2024.
I believe it’s important that we contine to index benefits, including superannuation, to wage growth not
simply CPI. Otherwise most people will be $40 a week worse off in three years time.
Protect free
prescriptions.
Making medicines and
contraception cheaper
for many people
and supporting
local pharmacies.
Protect the
clean Protect car
discount.
The scheme has resulted in
a record number of new
car sales being
low-to zero-emission
vehicles.
Protect free
public transport.
For children, young people
