Exploring the wonders of fall

Happy Friday Eve, my Over-the-Toppers! 

I hope you have enjoyed your week 

so far — and if not, well, we only have 

one more day to go until the weekend. 

I am so excited! Why, you may ask? 

Well, it is OFFICIALLY FALL! Yes! Fall 

is here, and I’m already starting to see 

Mother Nature transition the earth 

from summer to fall. I am so excited! 

Fall is my absolute favorite season. Other 

seasons can’t even compare. 

Since I was a kid, fall has always been 

my favorite season to be in, and I can 

never get enough of it. Fall is the season 

where I thrive the most. I have more 

peace, and my world seems simultaneously 

imperfect yet perfect. It is also the 

season when I start preparing to say 

goodbye to the current year and prepare 

for the new year. 

It is also the perfect time for me to do 

all of my favorite things I wish I could 

do all year — go all-out fall theme with 

my fashion, baking and cooking, and activities. 

I would say getting spooky, too, 

but as a dedicated lifetime member of 

the “Not-So-Secret Spooky Season Lovers 

Club,” spooky season is year-round 

for me. Fall is just when it’s “socially 

acceptable.” (Hey, I didn’t choose the 

spooky life, the spooky life chose me!) 

I have so many reasons why fall is my 

favorite time of year that I can go on 

and on. Fall brings cooler temperatures, 

football season, hot chocolate, fall fashion, 

pumpkin patches, festivals, fairs, 

carnivals, funnel cakes, sugary treats, 

Halloween, Thanksgiving, all things 

horror, homemade soups, clean, crisp 

air and so much more. I can’t even name 

them all! 

To be honest, I love this season so 

much that if I am ever blessed with a 

little girl of my own, I will name her Autumn 

Grace. I’m sure you can guess why 

I chose Autumn as her first name. Her 

middle name will be a tribute to my maternal 

grandmother, Grace. The name 

Autumn Grace pays homage to my favorite 

season as well as to one of my favorite 

people in the world. (I would like 

$1 for my services if anyone else decides 

to this name. LOL) 

On another note, do you all know 

how we started using the term “fall” in 

America? 

Well, English-speaking people have 

always called autumn … well, autumn. 

After America broke away from England, 

there was a debate between the 

Brits and Americans, called the battle of 

names (OK, truthfully, this didn’t really 

happen; I just came up with that name). 

What actually happened, though, is 

this: During the 1800s, both sides of the 

English-speaking coin unofficially took 

stances on what word should be used. 

The Brits took autumn, and the Americans 

took fall. 

Just think about it: The only reason 

this whole fall vs. autumn debate happened 

was that way back in the 1600s,

poets associated the term “fall” with the 

season in which “the leaves would fall 

from the trees.” Darn, these poets have 

a way with words! 

I’m not the only person who favors 

autumn over winter, spring and summer. 

MorningConsult.com conducted a 

survey in which 2,120 American adults 

were asked about which season they 

liked the best. The data information 

collected was categorized into multiple 

demographics — overall, gender, generation 

and geographic location. The data 

shows the majority (41%) of the survey 

participants chose fall as the season 

they liked best. 

Summer and spring tied for second, 

at 24%. Finally, winter came in last at 

1%. I’m not trying to be biased or anything, 

but the 41% who chose fall are my 

kind of people. 

Well, we have come to the end of another

together is so short! But don’t worry because

Can you believe this year is almost threefourths 

finished? The first day of October 

rolls around on Sunday! 

October is the month for going to the 

pumpkin patch for school kids and for folks 

to make those incredible pumpkin pies. As a 

kid, I always wanted to watch my grandma 

cook the pumpkin, add special spices, and 

roll out the dough for those pies. It was a particular 

time of year for me growing up. 

I’m sure many of you have some of the 

same fond memories of childhood during 

October. Of course, we all look forward to 

Halloween and its festivities. 

In my younger days, I worked as a truck

lifetime is how we will spend eternity. Our 

tombstone will give birth and death dates — 

but will show nothing about how we lived our 

lives or how we treated people.

If we want the “treat” of a heavenly reward, 

we must treat others as we want. Let God’s 

glow reflect in our lives — just like that candle 

in the jack-o’-lanterns we carve for decorations. 

Before lighting that candle, however, 

the pumpkin requires preparation — you 

have to scoop out all that gooey, stringy pulp 

inside, along with the seeds. 

I look at it this way: God took all the yucky 

stuff out of us and replaced it with that special 

glow, so we shine with his glory. Let’s not 

put that candle on. Instead, keep it burning 

so it touches everyone we meet. If your candle 

dims, Satan has pulled a “trick” on you, 

extinguishing your light. 

If Satan takes hold of you, you must put 

him out of your life — and live to reflect God’s 

glory. Living a life filled with the glow of God 

is the most important thing you can do on 

this earth. You are the only one who can determine 

how you head in the afterlife. That 

tombstone only gives dates — but you give 

the rest of the world the information about 

what you did from birth to death.

Lake Talquin State Forest 

The Lake Talquin State Forest is located between Tallahassee and Quincy; that locale is the basis for
