20 Magazine | Newsfeed On in Ōtautahi Te Whare Tapere, a multidisciplinary, indigenous artspace curated by Māori artists has opened at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre in Christchurch. To underline its difference from the traditional gallery environment, the once-white walls of the space have been adorned with messages and drawings using natural pigment from whenua, collected locally. The names and aspirations of local artists, rangatahi and tamariki, have literally been written into the walls, an instant and ephemeral way to transfer mauri into the space until they are eventually covered over. Also at the Arts Centre, the annual Sculpture Festival – now in its fourth year – celebrates three-dimensional art, showcasing 300+ works by 40 artists, with pieces ranging from glass and ceramics to sculpture and jewellery.
