This cultivator is a special development originating from organic farming. It ensures that the plants are all uniformly cut and dried out, creating a favorable seedbed. Next, the strip-till method is applied. The liquid manure band is placed approximately 12 centimeters below the soil surface. There is a distance of around 7 centimeters between the maize seeds and the liquid manure band. “We can loosen the soil up to a depth of 24 centimeters, which enables us to apply the liquid manure band at a deeper level, depending on the desired amount of liquid fertilizer,” says Wiesmann when describing the process. After the strip-till operation, the maize seeding is done. For this purpose, two eight-row maize planters from Kuhn and one from John Deere (1725 NT) are available. Detailed technical information on the maize planters can be found on the manufacturers’ websites on the internet. The maize planters can be positioned on the threepoint hitch using self-designed sliding frames, allowing the tractor tires to roll between the strip-till rows while ensuring that the planter is accurately aligned with the rows. In 2023, the Kuhn maize planters will be replaced by the acquisition of an additional John Deere machine. John Deere Maize Planter for No-Till Farming Maize is planted on a total of 1,800 hectares. “Although the John Deere maize planter is heavy, it stands out for its accurate seed placement and excellent field emergence. In addition, compared to the Kuhn equipment with the 1725 NT, we save almost 2 liters of fuel per hectare,” emphasizes Hante. Wiesmann adds, “With the John Deere maize planter, we can also do direct-seeding, which improves our operational flexibility.
