ON LOCALS
Wen By Joe Payne
In 1965, I started my music journey th my
three brothers - Gene, Larry and Gary -
Sweet Spngs, Missou. My father, Berry Gene
Payne bought a Kay guar and a small amp. One
day whe my dad was at work, Gene went to
my Dad's room and brought the guar and amp
out to our front por. We began trng to play.
Gene owed me an E7 ord whi was hard to
play on that old guar.
Gene got an offer to play bass a local black rhythm and blues band. So my Dad, Gene and I went to a
music store and bought a Sound amp, an Egmond guar and a bass guar. We soon brought my younger
brothers to the mix. Larry on guar, Gary soon took over the bass dues and Gene sted to vocals.
Around 1970 we started plang professionally as the Payne Brothers band. We were the house band at
Breakers then Moe's Bar whi is now Traders and then Pub 44. We played locally for 45 years and put
out 2 CDs, "Blk of an Eye" and "Take on Life".
After Gene passed, we played for several years along th Chs Tmble on keyboards and sax. We have
played th so many great musicians ... too many to ve cred to. Some of the most notable ones are
Robert Top Thomas, Shawn Beamer and Sco Corn.
The band eventually disbanded. I then sted to plang solo gs as Joe Payne and Fends, whi led
me to recordg at Sonny Yambor's Sunspla Studios along th Sonny as enneer and some of Volusia
County's finest musicians, cludg Mark Evangelista on bass, harmony vocals and lead vocals on Iron
Horse. Bryan Benne played drums on all tracks except Blues Busters, whi was played by Bly Dean.
Lois Ridgdl played Hammond B3 and sang background vocals, Ryan Ltle played elec piano and Me
Kaye also played bass. We produced my first solo CD to ve cred and tbute to all the great guasts
who came before me and fluenced me to wte this onal CD entled "Blues Muze".
