Bourne to be a leader 

HARD HITTER: Golfer Zaria Bourne has won the emerging leader title at the GirlBoss national awards.

FOURTEEN-year-old Zaria 

Bourne is an emerging force on 

the fairways. 

She was the youngest player 

in Waimairi Beach Golf Club’s 

history to win its senior club 

championship at the age of 12. 

Now the Mt Pleasant resident’s 

skills have been recognised 

at the national GirlBoss 

awards. She won the emerging 

leader award last week at a 

ceremony in Auckland. 

Said Zaria: “I was very happy, 

surprised and thankful to win 

the award. Golf is typically a 

male-dominated sport and I’m 

happy to show other young 

women that ‘if he can do it, so 

can I’. 

“I’ve had a lot of rejection due 

to my skill, size and gender. 

That didn’t stop me from 

hitting the ball harder and 

further.” 

Zaria has been a part of 

Waimairi Beach for about four 

years, and has two hole-in-ones 

to her credit.

upgrade 

A NEW “multi-sport zone” 

will be built at the Lyttelton 

recreation grounds as part of a 

redevelopment of the site. 

City council head of parks 

Andrew Rutledge said the new additions 

will increase the versatility 

of the recreation ground. 

“A new section will be built that 

includes a court that can be used 

for either basketball or futsal. 

A new netball court, and an 

artificial turf training ground for 

rugby and football are also going 

in,” he said. 

“This model is a first for the 

region and is a great solution for a 

site with limited space.” 

The existing rugby and football 

fields will be upgraded, reorientated 

and resown with turf. A new 

drainage and irrigation system 

will also be installed, as well as 

ducting for future floodlighting. 

“We’ve been working closely 

with the Lyttelton recreation 

ground reserve committee to 

understand the needs of the Lyttelton 

sporting community,” said 

Rutledge.

Orca siblings return to Akaroa

ORCA SIBLINGS Prop and 

Danny have made their annual 

return to Akaroa. 

They were spotted by Black Cat 

Cruises last week and were the 

first orcas of the season to visit 

the harbour. 

“While orcas usually turn 

up around this time of year, 

October to December, the first 

sightings are always exciting,” 

said Black Cat chief executive 

Paul Milligan. 

“Initially we thought these two 

were an unknown mother orca 

and her calf, and noticed the calf 

looked like it had some damage 

just behind its dorsal fin – most 

likely a propeller strike which is 

always sad to see,” he said. 

“The concern for the smaller 

orca was quickly abolished after 

a few local orca experts said the 

orcas were the well-known Prop 

and Danny.” 

Orca Research Trust and 

Whale Rescue founder Dr Ingrid 

Visser said in Guide to the New 

Zealand Orca, the two orcas 

were believed to be brother and 

sister. 

Visser has been documenting 

orca since 1995 and has records 

of Prop going back to 1982.

“The damage was so significant 

that it stunted her growth. 

Her dorsal fin is about a third 

smaller than an orca of a similar 

age.” 

Prop has two visible deep

and a third closer to the tail. 

Department of Conversation 

marine technical advisor Mike 

Ogle said he hoped people would 

respect the orca and give them 

the space they need. 

“This includes travelling no 

faster than ‘no wake’ speed 

within 300m of marine mammals, 

not circling or cutting off 

the path of any animals, and 

approaching from a direction 

that’s parallel and to the rear of 

the animals,” he said. 

“For whales, keep at least 50m 

away, or 200m for baleen or 

sperm whales with a calf.” 

Said Milligan: “While Prop 

and Danny are well-known, this 

should still be a warning to do 

what you can to maintain their 

safety. 

“Do not go searching for 

orcas, but if you do happen 

to spot one, be mindful and 

conscious.”

it safer and more attractive for

The recreation ground is 

currently used by a number of 

sports clubs like rugby, football 

and touch rugby, as well as 

community groups like Scouts 

and local schools. 

“Currently the Lyttelton 

Netball Club don’t have suitable 

courts to train and play on. 

With the addition of a netball 

and basketball court, all sports 

will be brought into the same 

area,” said Norris. 

Work is scheduled to start this 

month. 

Said Rutledge: “Work will 

take around four months to 

complete, with a further four 

months needed for the new 

grass to grow in. We expect 

to reopen the grounds before 

winter 2024.” 

The $2 million recreation 

ground redevelopment runs in 

parallel with the $27 million 

Naval Point – Te Nukutai o 

Tapoa development project, 

which includes an upgrade 

to the recreation ground’s 

changing facilities. Plans 

for the new facilities are in 

development.

This long weekend the brigade 

will remember these men and 

over 400 other past and present 

members over three days of 

casual get-togethers, open days 

and displays, a formal dinner 

and awards night, and a time for 

remembrance and reflection – all 

finishing on Sunday afternoon 

with a barbecue farewell. 

Thankfully the forecast is for 

quieter weather than last weekend 

but should the alarm sound, 

crews will man the fire trucks as 

usual. Remember on Saturday 

between 10am-2pm, London 

Street will host a static display of 

past and present fire engines with 

a sales table selling anniversary 

coins, T Shirts, Polos, Hoodies 

and, hot off the press, the 150th 

anniversary book.

Council seeks feedback on 

adapting to sea level rise 

THE CITY council and the 

Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour 

and Koukourarata Port Levy 

Coastal Panel are seeking 

feedback on draft adaptation 

pathways for Allandale, 

Koukourarata Port Levy, Purau, 

Teddington, Charteris Bay and 

Rāpaki. 

The city council will be 

holding online webinars in the 

coming weeks for people to 

learn more and ask questions 

about the proposals. People can 

give feedback on them until 

December 10.

coastal hazards adaptation 

planning Jane Morgan said it 

is important the coastal panel 

hears from as many people as 

possible. 

“The feedback we receive from 

this engagement will help our 

coastal panel of community 

and runanga representatives 

work out which combination of 

options to put forward to councillors 

as the preferred pathway 

for each community once the 

options have been developed in 

greater detail next year. 

“If approved, these pathways 

will guide the management of 

public facilities and infrastructure, 

like roads, reserves and 

jetties, over the coming decades

TREASURES FROM THE PAST 

Policing and prison escapades 

ON OCTOBER 9, 1846 an 

ordinance establishing an armed 

constabulary force was enacted 

by the Lieutenant-Governor of 

New Zealand, William Hobson. 

Less than four years later, in 

May 1850, His Excellency Governor 

of New Zealand George 

Grey appointed the head of the 

Canterbury Association John 

Godley as Resident Magistrate 

of Lyttelton, who then deputised 

the town’s first police officers 

Peter Cameron and J. Sheed. 

This initial Canterbury police 

force dealt with the growing 

drunk and disorderly behaviour 

among its founding population 

of around 100 European and 100 

Māori workers, all labouring in 

the employ of the association 

to build the port town infrastructure, 

to welcome the first of 

the Canterbury pilgrims due to 

arrive later that year. 

On the arrival of the first four 

ships from December 1850, the 

town’s population swelled by 

several hundred mostly English 

immigrants living in the crowded 

immigration barracks, along 

with a growing number of sailors 

frequenting the port town and its 

hospitality establishments. 

With this growth in population 

came a growth in disputes 

and criminal activity, such as 

burglaries and assaults, and in 

early 1851 Godley appointed the 

association’s secretary James 

Edward Fitzgerald as Waitaha 

Canterbury’s first Sub-Inspector 

of Police. A rather active colonist 

recently arrived on the Charlotte 

Jane, Fitzgerald also founded 

the Lyttelton Times in January 

1851. In between his journalistic 

activities James joined his fellow 

police constables in patrolling 

the streets of Ōhinehou Lyttelton 

and keeping the peace. He would 

go on to be elected the first 

Superintendent of Canterbury in 

1852, and then Lyttelton’s MP in 

the 1st New Zealand Parliament. 

In 1851 the port town also 

received its first police lock-up 

with the construction of a rudimentary 

‘V-frame’ detention 

facility. However, its fragility was 

soon exposed when a group of 

inmates, in a daring escapade, 

kicked through the floorboards 

and literally lifted the hut up 

from the inside and walked off 

towards the wharves. 

While the escapee prison cell 

was intercepted by the town’s 

constables, this incident underscored 

the need for a more robust 

penal infrastructure. Charles 

Crawford, a former whaler who 

had arrived in Waitaha Canterbury 

around 1844, constructed 

a small three-cell gaol out of clay 

bricks to replace the V-frame. 

Subsequently, a two-storey stone 

police office was erected on 

Oxford St by William Chaney, 

who later contributed to the 

construction of the Christchurch 

Cathedral. 

The following year, 1852, the 

town authorities embarked 

on building the formidable 

Lyttelton Gaol on Oxford St by 

the police office. Designed by 

architect Benjamin Woolfield 

Mountford, who would go on to 

draft the Christchurch Museum 

and Christ Church Cathedral, 

the gaol was built using the 

labour of the very convicts it 

intended to detain. In July of that 

year the growing settlement of 

Christchurch laid the foundations 

for its first lockup, followed 

by the opening of the first cells at 

Lyttelton Gaol, which was eventually 

to house up to 300 inmates 

when completed, including 29 

cells for women, although its full 

construction would take another 

decade of hard labour. 

As the port town grew so did 

its policing requirements, and in 

the mid-1860s local businessman 

John Kenner built the house at 

3 Coleridge Tce in west Lyttelton, 

which was then leased to the 

Lyttelton police from 1867 to 

1870, complete with its iconic 

blue light out front and a stone 

holding cell at the rear of the 

dwelling. 

In 1880, after 30 years of 

service, the old Police Office on 

Oxford St was demolished to

make way for extensions to the 

Lyttelton Gaol. In its place, a 

new police station was built in a 

Victorian Italianate architectural 

style on Sumner Rd near the 

corner of Oxford St. 

The Lyttelton Police Station 

commenced operations in 

1882, with a cell block added 

at the rear in the 1920s, and 

faithfully served the community 

of Ōhinehou Lyttelton for 

almost 130 years. 

The February 22, 2011 

Canterbury earthquake seriously 

damaged the old station 

building, which was declared 

unsalvageable later that year. The 

eventual demolition, beginning 

in January 2014, marked the end 

of a policing era in Ōhinehou 

Lyttelton for what had been until 

then Aotearoa New Zealand’s 

oldest operating police station.

MILITARY EXERCISE 

WATERMANSHIP EXERCISE 

20 Oct - 09 Nov 2023 

The general public is to be advised that a New 

Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted in the 

Banks Peninsula area over the period above. 

The exercise will involve up to 30 

personnel of 2 Engineer Regiment from 

Burnham Military Camp. 

Training will involve soldiers transiting in vessels 

around the Lyttleton and Akaroa harbour area 

with training weapons and military equipment. 

This will see a number of vessels conducting 

maritime activities around these areas by day 

and night. 

The New Zealand Army takes fire risk seriously 

and will ensure fire mitigation is present.
