steers way to success

COREY Griffiths will be 

combining a passion for racing 

and electronics when he 

defends his EVolocity regional 

title on Saturday. 

The Burnside High School 

year 10 student will be among 

34 teams of intermediate 

and high school students 

at the meeting on Saturday 

at KartSport racetrack in 

Halswell. 

“Last year Corey won the 

overall performance winner 

trophy in the standard kart 

category and the engineering 

excellence and innovation 

trophy,” said his mother, 

Janette Griffiths. 

“He was later deemed to be 

the New Zealand winner of the 

drag race in his category.” 

Students have worked on 

building race-worthy karts 

throughout the year at a series 

of workshops run by EVolocity. 

Griffiths said Corey had been 

to a welding workshop at Ara 

Institute of Canterbury, and a 

arnuino workshop and a 3D 

modelling software workshop 

at Canterbury University. 

“He even got to attend a tour 

of Kea Aerospace, giving a taste 

of exciting career opportunities 

in the field,” she said.

TWO VENDORS pocketed an 

extra $200,000-plus each after 

the brought-forward auctions 

for their houses shattered their 

expectations, selling way over the 

reserves. 

The Avonhead and Merivale 

properties had acceptable preauction 

offers made on them 

within a week of going to market 

and within two weeks both 

had sold under the hammer for 

hundreds of thousands of dollars 

more after heated bidding. 

A luxury four-bedroom, twobathroom 

home on Aikmans Rd 

in Merivale had a pre-auction 

offer of $2 million after just one 

open home. The offer was accepted 

and the auction was brought 

forward to Thursday. 

But the keen buyer found themselves 

up against tough competition, 

and after 11 bids of at least 

$10,000 each, the property was 

bought for $2.35m by someone 

else. 

Bayleys listing agent Belinda 

Ellis said the vendor was “over 

the moon” after walking away 

with $235,000 more than what 

they had been prepared to take. 

They had purchased the property 

in October 2019 for $1.465m, 

OneRoof records show.

ADDRESSING sexual violence 

and protecting penguins has 

earned two young women national 

awards. 

Former Christchurch Girls’ 

High student Hawwa Niyaz, 18, 

won the $1000 innovation prize 

at the national GirlBoss awards in 

Auckland last week, while Lucy 

Butterfield, 14, from St Margaret’s 

College took out the science, 

technology, engineering and maths 

title. 

Hawwa was a co-lead and 

advocate for Students Against 

Sexual Harm. She also founded the 

Beautiful Light Nurzainah Charitable 

Trust, which promotes better 

relationships between students and 

supports those who have suffered 

harm. 

“Advocating for connection 

and support and discussing these 

projects is really important to me. 

I have been working on this for 

about two years,” said Hawwa. 

“I believe the world can change 

through understanding intergenerational 

trauma, supporting 

students who are victims of sexual 

and hate crimes, and becoming 

open-minded to different educational 

avenues.” 

Hawwa helped get a report on 

sexual harm at CGHS released last 

year. It found more than a quarter 

of students had been sexually harassed 

with 20 saying they had been 

raped. The report inspired the

“I have 35 traps in Akaroa 

Harbour, which can only be 

accessed by boat. These traps are 

set up to prevent predation,” said 

Lucy. 

“I’ve been passionate about 

birds since I was young. For my 

10th birthday, I did a tour of the 

colonies and noticed the penguins 

needed help,” she said. 

“Predators have a massive effect 

on wildlife and the penguin 

population, which has grown again 

since we started the project.”

penguins for about three years. 

“Receiving this award was so 

cool, as the work is all volunteer 

and, after a long time, it is nice to 

have been recognised,” she said. 

“The award means that 

hopefully, I can raise more 

awareness for these penguins.” 

Lucy also won $1000 with her 

STEM award and hopes to use it to 

expand her trap lines and get the 

community involved. 

Hawwa and Lucy were joined by 

Catholic Cathedral College’s Zaria 

Bourne who won the emerging 

leader award. 

They were among 11 GirlBoss 

award winners chosen out of 530 

nominations from around the 

country. 

The awards are given to girls 

aged 11 to 18 who are leaders, role 

models and innovators.

Festival 

of flowers 

returns 

WIGRAM LIONS Club and 

primary schools are getting creative 

again with the return of the 6th 

annual Festival of Flowers. 

The festival, which will be held at 

South Hornby School on October 

28 from 10am to 3pm, is a display 

of arts and crafts with plants and 

flowers. 

“About a thousand year 1 to year 8 

students from Gilberthorpe Primary, 

St Bernadettes Primary, Hornby 

Primary, South Hornby Primary 

and Hornby High School have had 

the opportunity to take part,” said 

organiser Syd Horgan. 

The students have worked on their 

entries since March, in 14 sections 

ranging from everlasting sand saucers 

to students’ photos of flowers 

and gardens. 

The funds raised from the Festival 

of Flowers will support children 

attending Camp Quality at Living 

Springs in January 2024. 

“Camp Quality brings fun, hope 

and happiness into the lives of 

children living with cancer, inspiring 

them to get on with being kids 

again,” said Horgan. 

Hamper tickets will be sold for $2 

and the winners will be drawn at 

2.30pm. Entry on the day is a gold 

coin donation.

She said the property attracted 

locals looking for a contemporary 

base in Merivale with its 

striking exterior of a black and 

cedar finish. 

Ellis, who had sold the Aikmans 

Rd property four years 

ago to the vendors, said they had 

improved an already exceptional 

home by adding an outdoor 

louvre system and the gardens 

had also been established in that 

time. 

In the past few months, there 

has been a rise in the number of 

auctions brought forward, but 

Ellis said few had sold for that 

much more than the reserve. 

It didn’t always come down to 

how many bidders there were, 

she said, but more their level of 

motivation and how much they 

wanted the property. 

Ellis said they now needed to 

find a similar property for the 

underbidders who missed out. 

The other auction brought 

forward for a family home on 

Abingdon Court in Avonhead 

opened and was announced on 

the market at $948,500. 

But with nine registered bidders 

and three buyers battling it 

out until the end, it finally sold 

for $1.165m. 

Harcourts Grenadier salesperson 

Andrew Steele said the 

vendor was in Croatia at the 

time and had been asleep while 

the auction was on, so had been 

“absolutely ecstatic” when he 

woke up to the good news. 

“He was very surprised, and 

pleasantly surprised at the extra 

amount achieved.” 

Steele said there was a lot of 

demand for the home, mainly 

from families looking to upsize 

and to get into the school zones. 

“The property had potential to 

add value to it and I just think 

that price point in that market 

there seems to be a bit of heat 

on.” 

Steele believed taking it to 

auction helped achieve an 

“exceptional result” and he did 

not think they would have got 

the same price using another 

method of sale. 

“I always say if you are going 

to get a record price, it’s the auction 

process that will achieve it, 

and that was a classic example of 

that happening.”

one for students. 

“This event is the pinnacle of the students’ 

hard work as they can see results, 

experience competition and get ideas 

from other students’ creations.” 

The race day will feature three different 

types of race; a 100m drag race based 

on speed, a gymkhana where karts and 

students will have to go around, over and 

through obstacles, and a 2-3km endurance 

race where each lap is counted. 

Each kart will also be judged in four 

‘special’ categories; engineering and design, 

electronic innovation, showstopper, 

and earth care. 

“Electronics is Corey’s passion. Last 

year he received the Best in Class Excellence 

award for electronics, so having 

the opportunity to put his skills to use 

in EVolocity has been amazing,” said 

Griffiths. 

“He has loved the process of building 

and improving the kart and is very 

grateful to Mr Creighton whose hard 

work and dedication have made it possible 

for Corey and the other teams to be 

part of EVolocity.” 

EVolocity is a not-for-profit charitable 

organisation that tutors students in 

STEM – science, technology, engineering 

and mathematics – all over the country. 

Students from Avonside Girls High, 

Hagley College, Hillmorton High, 

Hornby High, Hurunui College, Rangiora 

New Life, Riccarton High School, 

Roncalli College and St Thomas of Canterbury 

will compete alongside Corey, 

showcasing their hand-built electric 

vehicles at Kartsport race track.

to meet and chat with Canterbury 

University’s Formula SAE electric race 

car team and to test drive a Melo Yelo

on the day.

and their airways 

Dogs evolved more than 40 million 

years ago. 

Around 150-200 years ago, the concept of 

“breed” as we know it today was invented. 

Due to the popularity of showing and 

breeding in the early 1900’s, there was 

a need to create a spectrum of diverse 

breeds. The modern domestic dog became 

mans greatest genetic experiment - in 

some cases genetic triumph, in others 

genetic disaster. 

Health and welfare concerns about 

Brachycephalic dogs has become an 

increasingly high profile and contentious 

topic among the veterinary profession 

over recent years. There is no doubt these 

dogs have fabulous personalities and 

the popularity of this cherished breed is 

on the rise, but these dogs are strongly 

predisposed to a range of disorders due to 

their conformation. The most concerning 

is respiratory disease but they also get 

spinal disease, eye diseases, dystocia and 

heat stroke. It has been reported they live 

significantly shorter lifespans compared to 

non- Brachycephalic dogs. 

Brachycephalic breeds have a shorter wider 

skull, which leads to a narrow nasal passage 

and altered pharyngeal anatomy. Pugs 

and English bulldogs can have a dorsal 

rotation of the maxillary bone (upper 

jaw). Breathing is just really difficult, they 

are often snorers from a young age and 

exercising becomes an effort. If severe 

enough, these dogs will collapse, especially 

after a bout of over activity, excitement or 

excessive heat. Some dogs will gag, retch 

or reverse sneeze due to choking on their 

overly long soft palate. Regurgitation of 

food is common and this can be what 

they are seen for first. This can lead to 

bronchopneumonia. 

Diagnosis of elongated soft palate, tonsil 

enlargement and laryngeal collapse can 

only be made visually under carefully 

managed anaesthesia. Stenotic nostrils can 

be observed on physical exam.

From all accounts Posh is experiencing no 

exercise intolerance, is a snorer though but 

healthy otherwise. Early surgical correction 

of this condition is advised before 

secondary changes develop in the airways, 

causing severe breathing issues that 

become irreversible, affecting her quality of 

life and exercise ability.

We take extra precautions with the 

anaesthetic and drugs used because 

of her breed. Posh only had her palate 

shortened as her nostrils were of good 

width ( which is unusual for this breed). 

Posh breezed through her spey and palate 

surgery, waking up uneventfully, looking 

comfortable and settled. 

Recent studies have shown that 90% of 

BOAS dogs are significantly improved with 

surgery. If treatment is undertaken early 

before we see laryngeal collapse, these 

dogs can enjoy exercise and play without 

shortness of breath. 

Recently we had the pleasure of meeting 

“ Posh”, a much loved 7 month old French 

Bulldog. Posh was admitted for her 

desexing procedure and BOAS surgery 

with Dr Steve Heap ( BOAS is a combination 

or narrow nostrils and an overly long soft 

palate at the back of the throat) because 

she’s a breed to go on and develop severe 

respiratory disease later in life.

The transition to Burnside High 

School has been smooth and I am 

very grateful for the support of 

the Senior Leadership Team and 

staff. 

Focus for the Term 

Burnside High School is already 

a high performing school. It has been led well, it is achieving well, 

and it is a school in good heart with an excellent reputation. A 

platform of success therefore does not need to be built, but built 

upon. 

I am really looking forward to working with our staff, students 

and our parent community to build on this platform of success 

together. Together we will create a culture where our students are 

at the centre of everything that we do. A culture where we won’t 

rest until every student in our care is engaged and achieving. 

Every student, every day in every class deserves our best effort 

and we will strive to make sure that we live up to this expectation. 

My focus for term 3 was to connect with students, staff and 

families. I have enjoyed getting out and about in the grounds 

and in the classrooms to meet our students, as well as meeting 

parents and caregivers at PTA meetings, parent-teacher 

interviews and subject selection evenings. 

We now move in to a very busy Term 4 and I look forward to 

celebrating the successes of our young people at the various 

award ceremonies coming up.

Winter Sport Tournament Week 

2023 

Burnside High had 15 teams competing at Winter 

Tournament (held late August-Early September) 

at either South Island Secondary Schools’ or NZ 

Secondary Schools’ competitions around the country. 

The sports competed in were: 

Badminton, Table Tennis, Golf, 

Football, Basketball, Netball, Ice 

Hockey, Hockey, Sport Climbing, 

Equestrian and Fencing. 

The weather was great, and all 

the teams competed at their very 

best, with our best result being 

a 3rd equal placing in NZ for our 

three golfers - Yuki Miya, Jono 

Fry and Yash Naicker. 

Congratulations also to our Boys 

Squash team, who, just before 

Tournament Week, competed 

at the NZ Secondary Schools’ 

Championships in Auckland, placing 6th - a best-ever result for 

Squash at National tournament.

Hei Hei hub reaches fundraising goal 


THREE YEARS ago, the Hei 

Hei Broomfield Community 

Development Trust needed to 

raise $250,000 to renovate its 126 

On The Corner building. 

But the cost blew out to 

$350,000 because of inflation. 

That didn’t deter the 

community group, which 

continued its fundraising with 

a high tea, getting it over the 

magic number needed. 

“I don’t think we’ll be doing 

any more fundraisers for a while, 

but we will hold an opening 

evening for the building, as well 

as hopefully a Christmas gettogether,” 

said trust co-ordinator 

Tracey Buunk. 

“We started fundraising 

about three years ago and we 

were struggling with the funds. 

Inflation drove prices up and 

there were a few roadblocks 

along the way. 

“It’s exciting to see the 

progress. We can now afford 

the extra amenities we need like

the first time the property has 

actually had tapped hot water 

running.” 

The trust has received several 

grants including from the city 

council, Hornby Rotary Club 

and Lotteries Commission. 

It also held many sausage 

sizzles, high teas and sold raffles. 

Buunk said the building 

has ‘taken shape’ with the 

construction of the kitchen and 

toilet block about three-quarters 

of the way through. It will be 

finished at the end of November. 

“We’ve got the walls up, 

though not the cladding yet, and 

last week Tuesday the roof and 

tin went up too,” she said. 

“We are thankful to Kitchen 

Express for allowing us to 

build the kitchen without them 

requiring a deposit. I cried when 

I was told. We have had some big 

donations like a big fridge to go 

in our storage room. 

“Without the help of our 

amazing community, especially 

those who didn’t have a lot, and 

our supporters, funders, helpers 

and many others, none of this 

would have happened.” 

126 On The Corner is a hub 

that hosts activities for the 

community, such as cooking, 

crafts, outings, walking group, 

tai chi, men’s group, monthly 

community lunches, tea and 

more.

WAYNE CAREY does not let 

his health dictate his love for 

supporting the community. 

The 56-year-old has been 

involved with community activities 

for the last 18 months after 

he and his wife Vickie moved to 

Christchurch from Blenheim. 

On Saturday, Carey will be 

hosting a sausage sizzle at Mega 

Mitre10 Hornby (9am to 1pm) to 

raise funds for Ronald McDonald 

House. 

“This is my first sausage sizzle 

ever, so I hope it brings forward 

heaps of people,” he said. 

“Illness has affected my life in 

many different ways – some days 

I struggle.” 

Carey was a bus driver in Blenheim 

for several years and said 

he ‘loved it’. 

“But a few ago, I was diagnosed 

with several health issues, 

and needed to stop doing what I 

loved,” said Carey. 

“I have hearing loss from a 

surgery gone wrong, which led 

to balance problems. I also have 

concussion syndrome from 

sporting accidents and osteoarthritis 

and I get tired very easily.” 

Carey spends four hours a 

day when he is 

able, collecting 

pinecones to sell 

alongside fundraisers, 

to which 

he donates the 

money to Ronald 

McDonald House 

Wayne 

Carey 

and St Vicent de 

Paul. 

He has also 

worked alongside 

Wigram’s Megan Woods, giving 

out flyers and door-knocking. 

“I wanted to give back to 

organisations who have helped 

me through difficult times,” said 

Carey. 

“I can’t explain the feeling it 

gives me to be able to do something 

good. I feel grateful and 

humbled and I don’t expect to 

get anything in return. It’s like a 

full-time job now.” 

Carey has been involved in 

many community-led projects 

such as 126 On the Corner and 

the Greater Hornby Residents 

Association’s new hydrotherapy 

pool. 

“These projects will keep me 

going until Christmas, and then 

I’ll get stuck back into pinecone 

collecting. I have about nine 

regular customers so I’m kept 

busy,” said Carey. 

“I also have help from a young 

man once a week. He absolutely 

loves it, and always gives me a 

handshake or a hug after we’ve 

finished for the day,” he said. 

“Fundraising is one way to 

take away some stress for those 

with health issues. For people 

who don’t think there’s anything 

out there for them to do: There 

is.”

Chinese inspired creations 

SAM LOW is known for three 

things – winning New Zealand’s 

MasterChef last year, making 

award-winning coffee and 

going viral on social media for 

re-plating his quarantine room 

service. 

Now he can add cookbook 

author to that list with the 

release of Modern Chinese, 

Low’s attempt to demystify 

modern Chinese cooking with 

accessible, easy recipes made 

from ingredients from the 

supermarket. 

Low, born in Fiji, moved to 

New Zealand when he was 8 

years old. His parents bought 

a dairy, and later took over a 

takeaway outlet. 

This was where Low got his 

first taste of commercial food 

production, starting out on the 

Microwave Milo Cakes 

Makes 1 big portion 

Ingredients 

2 Tbsp flour 

⅛ tsp baking soda 

Pinch of salt 

3 Tbsp Milo or malt drink or hot 

chocolate powder 

1½Tbsp brown sugar (or any 

sugar) 

1 egg 

15g butter or coconut oil, melted 

+ Ice cream or whipped or 

pouring cream to serve

and beverage apprenticeship at 

SkyCity. 

After winning the New 

Zealand Barista Championship 

in 2016, Low turned to his 

passion for sharing chinese 

dishes on social media. 

While Low grew up eating 

Cantonese food, he started to 

explore the diversity of regional 

Chinese cuisine as it arrived in 

New Zealand. He said Sichuan 

cuisine has probably had the 

most impact on the way he cooks 

and the recipes in his new book – 

Modern Chinese.

Method 

• In a small bowl, mix all the 

ingredients until well combined. 

• Pour the batter into a 

medium-sized microwave-proof 

bowl or large mug. The bowl/ 

mug should be only half full. 

Microwave, uncovered, for 60- 

90 seconds depending on the 

strength of your microwave. 

• When cooked, the cake 

should double in height. Serve 

with your favourite ice cream, 

whipped cream or pouring 

cream for one of the quickest 

cake desserts ever. 

Steamed Salmon in 

Chilli Bean Sauce 

Serves 2-4 as a side with rice 

Ingredients 

600g-800g pin-boned, skin-on 

salmon fillets 

2 Tbsp Shaoxing or any aromatic 

rice wine 

½ tsp salt 

30g fresh ginger, sliced 

Chilli sauce 

3 Tbsp oil 

1 Tbsp preserved black bean 

2 Tbsp Sichuan chilli bean paste 

(doubanjiang) or sriracha or 

your favourite chilli sauce 

30g fresh ginger, finely chopped 

6 cloves garlic, finely chopped 

100ml water 

1 Tbsp light soy sauce 

2 tsp sugar 

2 Tbsp black vinegar 

Salt to taste 

1½ Tbsp cornflour mixed with 

3 tablespoons water to make a 

thickening slurry 

Small handful of coriander, 

chopped, to garnish (optional) 

Method 

• For the fish, prepare a 

steamer with a lid over a wok or 

a large pot with at least 2 litres of 

boiling water. Rub the rice wine 

and salt over salmon fillets and 

lay them on the dish skin-side 

down. Top with the ginger slices. 

• Steam the fish for 15-20 

minutes until cooked. Use a 

chopstick to poke through the 

flesh at the thickest point; if 

there’s resistance, steam for a 

little longer. Once the fish is 

cooked, remove the sliced ginger 

and turn off the steamer but let it 

sit in the residual heat so the fish 

stays hot. 

• For the chilli sauce, place 

the oil, black bean and chilli 

bean paste in a wok or medium 

pan and cook over a high heat, 

constantly moving it around to 

prevent burning, until fragrant 

(about a minute). Add the ginger 

and garlic and fry for another 

minute. Add in the water plus 

the cooking liquid from the 

steamed fillets (hold the fish in 

place with chopsticks and tilt 

the juices from the dish into the 

wok/pan). Add in the soy sauce, 

sugar and black vinegar. Bring to 

a simmer for 1 minute and taste. 

Add salt if required. 

• Reduce the heat to medium. 

Slowly stir in as much of the 

slurry as needed to reach your 

desired consistency — it should 

resemble a thick pouring gravy. 

Turn off the heat. 

• Pour the sauce over the top of 

the fish. Garnish with coriander, 

if desired.

Suzuki Vitara Hybrid lively and effortless 

DESPITE BEING offered in 

Europe, the UK and Japan 

for the last five years, Hybrid 

versions of Suzuki’s SUV range 

have just made to this side of the 

automotive globe. 

It’s a case of better late than 

never. The government’s clean 

car fee and rebate scheme 

have no doubt played a part in 

Suzuki’s decision to offer a hybrid 

version of their popular Vitara 

here earlier this year. Ironically, 

the arrival in July of tougher 

thresholds to qualify for a rebate 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

meant most hybrids, including 

the Vitara, no longer qualified for 

a rebate. Even worse, some not-so 

squeaky-green hybrid credentials 

cop a clean car fee. 

Three petrol/electric “mild” 

Hybrids are available for our 

market including a rangetopping 

all-wheel drive. Suzuki 

claim the Vitara Hybrid Turbo 

is at least 15 per cent more 

economical than its non-Hybrid 

Vitara siblings. It will help us all 

breathe a little easier with up to 

18 per cent lower CO2 emissions. 

Prices start at $39,990 

for the Hybrid JX 2WD 

manual, with the auto 

retailing for $41,990. 

Rounding at the range is 

the $44,990 JLX AWD 

auto that was fronted 

for this road test. Some 

customisation is offered 

with two-tone body 

colours as an $800 option. 

Suzuki has developed a simple, 

light, compact and affordable 

Hybrid system comprising an 

integrated starter generator, 

engine control module, and 

an auxiliary power module. 

This incorporates a lithium-ion 

battery and sensors and a DC/ 

DC (48 volt to 12 volt) power 

converter. 

In its new hybridised state, the 

motor produces 95kW of power 

at 5,500rpm and the maximum 

torque of 235Nm at 2,000 to 

3,000rpm, up 6.8 per cent 

compared to the standard Vitara. 

Peak torque inches up by 15Nm. 

In spite of the improvement 

in fuel consumption and less 

emissions, the Hybrid Turbo 

retains the lively performance 

that helped the Vitara build a 

large fan base here. What makes 

this engine a real champion is 

the 235Nm of torque that is ready 

for action from just 1500rpm. 

This good mid-range throttle 

response makes it one of the most 

effortless drives you will find in 

a compact urban SUV in this 

price bracket. A quick, accurate, 

and sweet shifting six-speed 

automatic is a very agreeable

There isn’t an abundance of 

usable passenger space in a cabin 

that always seems a bit tight 

and light on headroom for taller 

types. One redeeming feature is 

the 60/40 split folding rear seat 

allowing you to maximise the 

limited rear hatch cargo area. An 

unexpected bonus is a cleverly 

concealed floor in the rear hatch 

compartment, perfect for keeping 

valuables out of sight of potential 

thieves. 

The cabin is an obvious area 

where the Vitara is showing its 

age, and with an eight-year-old 

vehicle that’s difficult to disguise. 

The test car was let down on 

quality by plenty of hard plastic 

surfaces throughout the cabin. 

It needs to be better, given its 

$44,995 asking price. 

One of the biggest and 

most welcome changes is the 

introduction of a range of 

new safety technology that 

is instrumental in lifting the 

Vitara’s safety game a good notch 

or two. Heading an extensive 

list of worthwhile safety tech 

is rear cross traffic alert, blind 

spot monitoring, lane departure 

warning and adaptive cruise 

control. 

Handling feels more composed 

and planted on the road than 

any Vitara I have driven. For a 

smallish SUV, the ride is supple 

enough, although the suspension 

can get a bit vocal over high 

frequency bumps in lower speed 

urban driving. In the final wash 

up, the Hungarian-made Vitara 

turbo hybrid is an enjoyable 

drive; versatile and with AWD 

well suited to out gnarly roads 

and weather. On the downside, 

fuel economy isn’t much better 

than the turbo motor model, 

making it hard to justify the 

hybrid variant’s premium 

pricing.
