THE CANARY Experience Ahh the Canary Islands. They really do have it all, with warm sunshine, wonderful beaches, and unique landscapes. So, where’s best for your type of holiday? The Canary Islands have literally hundreds of beaches: some are made for families where you can build sandcastles and splash around to your heart’s content, while others invite you to kick back with a cocktail under the palm trees. It’s also home to some of Europe's best leisure parks, offering amazing day’s out for kids and big kids alike. (And, if you are on a child-free holiday then some of them now feature their own adults-only zones.) Then there’s all the mesmerising natural beauty to soak up, whether you’re seeking an active hike through volcanic landscapes and jungle, taking a gentle drift to spot whales and dolphins, or looking for a dreamy night under the ever-inspiring star-filled skies. COUPLES RETREATS GRAN CANARIA While Gran Canaria offers Sioux City Park where you can be a cowboy for the day, and plenty of water fun at Aqualand Maspalomas, the island has also got a distinctly grown-up side, with its jaw-dropping mountain landscapes. Head to Roque Nublo in the heart of the island for one of the most romantic viewpoints. Take a tranquil moment or two on the black sands of San Agustín and the nearby Fincas Canarias aloe vera farm. Or you can enjoy a warm barefoot walk through the golden sand dunes of Maspalomas, followed up with a secluded picnic. LANZAROTE While great for families, Lanzarote is also an ideal place if you’re seeking a more active or cultural holiday. The island boasts Europe’s longest go-karting track, which has a bar to relax in after racing. Be sure to explore the impressive otherworldly landscapes in Timanfaya National Park, where you can witness geysers, go stargazing, and tuck into a volcanic barbecue meal at El Diablo Restaurant. Then there’s the surrounding warm waters that host over 100 diving sites if you want to go scuba diving, plus the pleasant wind and waves that offer some of the best surfing experiences in the Canaries. Have a wine-tasting experience in the unusual black lava pit vineyards of La Geria, discover the artistic worlds of César Manrique, or explore the plunging underground passages of Cueva de los Verdes. FAMILY-FANTASTIC TENERIFE We adore the south coast of Tenerife for family stays, as it has plenty of luxurious yet all-inclusive beach resorts that are packed with entertainment and year-round sunshine. Aside from the fabulous beaches and great restaurants, one of the big draws of Tenerife has to be Siam Park, a Thai-themed water park that’s arguably the best in the world (and now offers a ‘champagne club’ and private cabanas for adult visitors). For smaller children, Aqualand waterpark lives right next door. Venture on a thrilling aerial cable car ride in Teide National Park, where you can witness amazing dramatic views over the island or go out on a whale-watching excursion. You could also visit Castillo San Miguel, a medieval-themed restaurant with fire-breathers, acrobats, court jesters, and jousting knights! FUERTEVENTURA Great for families, Fuerteventura offers an array of activities centred around its lovely resorts, beautiful unspoiled beaches, and warm waters. You can go swimming, kitesurfing, windsurfing, or head out around the island on catamarans and glassbottomed boats. To the north of the island lies Corralejo’s dazzling white dunes, which is an idyllic sandboarding spot. And not to be outdone with Tenerife, the island has its own sprawling amusement park, Acua Water Park, with lots of water rides and a children’s club for a great day out.
