KIMIHIA EARLY Learning 

Centre and Parents’ College 

recently held the long-awaited 

opening of its new complex, Te 

Matatupu. 

The learning centre moved 

to Te Aratai College grounds 

because the original Linwood 

grounds were damaged 

during the February 22, 2011 

is ‘here to stay’ 

earthquakes. 

Centre manager Radhika 

Chakrabarti said discussions 

with the Ministry of Education 

to relocate the centre to the new 

site with the parents’ college 

started over three years ago. 

“Kimihia Early Learning 

Centre and the Parent College 

was opened on March 23, 

2006, by Prime Minister Helen 

Clark on Ferry Rd, on the 

Linwood football grounds,” 

she said. 

“These facilities were 

opened to serve and support 

young mothers and later 

this extended to supporting 

families in our local 

community.” 

She said moving to Te Aratai 

had been exciting and hard 

work. 

“As a team, we gave a 

lot of thought about every 

little aspect of our learning 

community and to be 

inclusive, I believe that we have 

done well. 

“The opening of this centre 

secures not only our future 

but also for our tamariki. We 

are committed to our local 

community and with these 

steps, we are here to stay.”

Lyttelton 

cruise ship 

passengers 

to get city 

shuttle 

INCOMING cruise ship 

passengers will be bussed 

straight from Lyttelton’s port 

to Christchurch, following 

locals’ complaints about 

tourists overwhelming public 

transport. 

The season runs from 

November 7 until April 8, with 

77 ships expected to arrive in 

Lyttelton and 12 scheduled for 

Akaroa. 

Lyttelton residents have 

complained when the ships 

are in port and bus services 

have struggled to keep up 

with the added demand from 

tourists. 

Economic development 

agency ChristchurchNZ said 

this season would trial cruise 

passengers catching a free 

shuttle from the Lyttelton 

cruise berth directly into the 

central city. 

Destination and attraction 

general manager Loren 

Aberhart said this would 

aim to reduce the number 

of passengers who entered 

the port town, and eliminate 

the strain on the public bus 

system. 

“A huge volume of cruise 

ship passengers really does 

overload the town,” she said.

Preschool fundraises 

after shock burglary 


A GIVEALITTLE page has 

been set up for Sydenham 

Community Preschool after a 

burglary occurred earlier this 

month. 

Parent Jon Sharpe set up the 

fundraiser to replace the stolen 

items. 

Sports equipment, gardening 

supplies, maintenance tools 

and educational resources were 

reported stolen from the school 

on October 7 and 8. 

Said Sharpe: “This is a huge 

setback for a not-for-profit 

preschool with limited financial 

resources. 

“Community preschools have 

to work extra hard to stay afloat 

and rely on grants to be able to 

provide children with equipment 

and resources for learning.” 

Sharpe said there were several 

preschools hit over the same 

weekend, including Woolston 

Preschool. 

“Unfortunately, the police 

resources are stretched too 

thin and they weren’t able to 

investigate, which is frustrating,” 

he said.

and we’re wondering about what 

else these ‘unwelcomed’ visitors 

did. 

“It is a big priority and focus 

of ours to give our children the 

right space to learn and grow in. 

“That includes the community 

garden that we use to teach 

children and give back to the 

community.” 

The school lost seedlings, 

potting mix, a garden hose, 

compost, a lawn mower and a 

water blaster. 

“The total cost of the loss is yet 

to be calculated but it is worth 

thousands of dollars,” said Jay. 

“People in the community 

have reached out to the 

preschool, and we’re thankful for 

the setting up of the Givealittle 

page.” 

The Givealittle page was set up 

last week and has a $7000 goal. 

“We are encouraging the 

community and local businesses 

to support the important work 

of this community-based 

preschool, to ensure the children 

continue to have access to highquality 

learning experiences,” 

said Sharpe. 

“Let’s demonstrate to the staff, 

tamariki and their whanau 

impacted by this selfish act, 

what a caring and supportive 

community can achieve.”

Guiding the way for young girls 


CIARA GIBSON has just 

returned from representing New 

Zealand at an international Girl 

Guiding governance forum. 

Now, the 20-year-old 

Canterbury University student 

wants to see more girls step up to 

leadership positions. 

Gibson, who lives in Ilam, 

was selected as one of two New 

Zealand representatives at the 

38th World Association of Girl 

Guiding and Girl Scouting world 

conference in Cyprus. 

About 400 delegates from 106 

countries attended the event 

to discuss strategy, policy and 

leadership at a global level, elect 

new world board members 

and participate in a range of 

workshops. 

Gibson said the conference 

connected her with other people 

around the world who are 

passionate about empowering 

young women. 

“But I also learned young 

women can have much more 

of a voice on numerous issues 

and take advantage of a whole 

range of different opportunities 

compared to our peers in some 

other countries,” she said. 

“Guides has inspired me over 

the years and has offered me 

a wonderful chance to really 

challenge myself and to learn 

and grow. 

“I want to offer the same 

support and mentoring to other

girls and young women who 

may want to become the leaders 

of tomorrow, or who may just 

want to have fun and enjoy new 

challenges with a great group of

leader representative, and was 

a member of the national girl 

advisory group, which focuses 

on giving young women a voice 

within the organisation. 

She has also attained the 

Queen’s Guide award (the 

highest achievement in guiding) 

and has served as both a leader 

and co-ordinator for the central 

South Island region. 

“It sometimes takes guts 

to put your hand up and step 

out of your comfort zone, and 

that’s where I’ve been lucky as a 

Girl Guide,” she said. 

“It’s important for girls to see 

other girls in leadership positions 

and Guiding has been invaluable 

in that respect. The organisation 

has done so much to help me 

overcome those barriers and help 

me become a leader.” 

Gibson didn’t have to look 

far for inspiration to become 

a Girl Guide. Her mother and 

both of her grandmothers were 

Guides, and her father and both 

her grandfathers were involved 

in Scouting. She joined the 

organisation aged 7 as a Brownie. 

Her mum, Sharon, is still a 

Guide leader and her younger 

sister, Brianna, is also a leader. 

Established in 1908, 

GirlGuiding NZ offers a 

non-competitive learning 

environment which is openminded 

and values-based. 

“It’s a supportive place to grow 

confident, adventurous girls 

who are ready to be tomorrow’s 

leaders,” said Gibson. 

“Given its strong focus on 

inclusivity, and given the 

challenges girls and young 

women face in today’s society, 

it’s a special place where girls 

and young women can learn 

new skills, create lifelong 

connections, and nurture 

personal growth and confidence. 

“There’s still much more we 

need to do at home to encourage 

young Kiwi women to step 

up. Our ‘tall poppy’ syndrome 

means we often still hold 

ourselves back.”

BACK SHED, garden shed, 

garage shed, basement shed 

– what these spaces have in 

common is they’re places people 

go to get creative. 

The first shed tour 

in Canterbury, held by 

Rotary Ōtautahi Passport, 

will showcase such crafters, 

collectors, cultivators, 

enthusiasts, toy makers, wood 

turners, painters, soap makers, 

classic car rebuilders, and more. 

The sheds are located all over, 

from Parklands, New Brighton, 

South Brighton, Sydenham 

and Waltham, to Lincoln, West 

Melton, Rolleston and Clarkville. 

“We were looking for ideas 

for a fundraiser that was fun, 

novel and different to 

other fundraisers,” said 

Rotary Ōtautahi Passport 

founding member Deb 

Gimblett. 

“I had been involved in 

a similar Rotary shed tour 

up north and it had been 

a great success . . . This 

hasn’t been done before 

down here in the South 

Island as far as we are 

aware.” 

The tour will be a self-drive

excursion, from 9am-4pm on 

Saturday, November 4, and will 

cover 10-plus locations. 

Said Gimblett: “We have sheds 

for everyone; they are 

not just men’s sheds. 

Start early so you can 

take your time, choose 

the sheds that interest 

you and stop along the 

way for refreshments at 

two of the sites.” 

Tour tickets are 

$45 and all proceeds 

from the day will go to 

charities that encourage 

under-five-year-olds 

to thrive, like Plunket, Parental 

Wellbeing Canterbury and the 

Rotary Community Breast Milk 

Bank. 

Rotary Ōtautahi Passport was 

founded in March 2022 and is a 

club that utilises a new model. 

“Where we differ from the 

older clubs is we only meet twice 

a month and that is either to do 

projects in our communities 

or to plan the next project. We 

have no fixed abode and meet 

anywhere over Christchurch,” 

said Gimblett. 

“Our members come from far 

and wide. Lincoln, many suburbs 

in and around Christchurch and 

out to Kaiapoi, which is different 

to the traditional model. 

“We have been busy over 

the last 18 months and 

donated proceeds from our 

fundraising to The Youth Hub, 

the Canterbury Rotary Breast 

Milk Bank at St Georges, 

and the Canterbury Refugee 

Resettlement and Resource 

Centre, to name just a few.”
