COCHLEAR IMPLANTS have changed the lives of deaf twins Thomas and Ryan McLiskey. The 21-year-olds were born 14 weeks premature and profoundly deaf. To help their hearing, the twins received cochlear implants when they were three-years-old. “While we didn’t talk until we were four or five, the cochlear implants helped us with that confidence to be who we are, to be treated as equal to everyone else,” Thomas said. A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that can help to provide a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-ofhearing. A national fundraiser for cochlear implant programme, Loud Shirt Day, is taking place on Friday. Originally from Invercargill, the twins have been based in Christchurch at the Ko Taku Reo campus, formerly the van Asch Deaf Education Centre, since they were 15. THE CITY council’s animal management team is urging pet owners to take special care of their animals as the firework season approaches. Guy Fawkes on November 5 is typically the busiest time of the year for the team, as it deals with animals on the loose after being frightened by fireworks. “This time is incredibly stressful for pets and their owners, with animals getting spooked and confused by the loud noise of fireworks which can often prompt them to run away,” said city council animal services manager Lionel Bridger. “If you have pets, we recommend keeping them inside or confined in a safe space at night during the period which fireworks are available, which is from November 2 to 5. “Keep your doors, windows, and curtains closed to try and lessen the noise and minimise any flashing lights outside. In 2023, Thomas represented New Zealand at the world championship for deaf basketball in Greece. He took up basketball in primary school and returned to the game through social competition in his late teens. Meanwhile, Ryan is passionate about scootering – practicing tricks, and collecting rare parts to customise scooters for sale. He recently started a caretaking role at Ko Taku Reo and would like to become an entrepreneur one day, while Thomas wants to become a youth worker and help young people turn their lives around. This year the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme (SCIP) is celebrating 20 years. Thomas and Ryan’s stories are included in SCIP’s commemorative book Hear our stories – Celebrating 20 years. • For more info visit www.loudshirtday.org.nz Thursday October 26 2023 The Star NEWS 3 In Brief Increased hospital parking trial under way A two-week trial lane closure for increased hospital parking is beginning this week on Hagley and Riccarton avenues, to scope the feasibility of permanently removing the lane to increase on-street parking. The first week of the trial will see the kerbside lane, on the Hagley Park side of the road, coned off, while the second week will include rephasing the traffic lights. Once the trial ends the council will analyse the data and a report will go councillors to decide if the lane will be closed permanently to create more car parks. One dead after SH1 Cheviot crash One person has died after a multi-car crash in North Canterbury, which injured six others and forced a closure of State Highway 1. The crash north of Cheviot happened around 4pm on Tuesday, with fire crews from Cheviot responding. A St John Ambulance spokesperson said they sent three helicopters, four ambulances and one operations manager to the scene. ECan survey seeks public’s priorities for outcomes and actions Cantabrians can help shape the region’s future by completing a new survey for ECan. The survey has three sections – climate action, land use and biodiversity, water and coast – and asks people to rank their conflicting priorities around environmental outcomes and goals. ECan chair Peter Scott said the feedback will help the regional council update its plans and policies, such as the Canterbury Regional Policy Statement, which directs regional, district and climate action plans that address climate change risks.
