artist Andy Goldsworthy stands as a beacon

Ana Liz Cordero 

ON SUSTAINABLE ART AND ITS IMPORTANCE 

Ana Liz Cordero has always had a fascination with nature and its conservation, as a result of 

her Ecuadorian heritage and her awareness of the Incan people of her native country. Her 

curiosity and admiration for this ancient culture stems from childhood trips to the countryside 

in the provinces of Azuay and Cañar with her father. 

Interview with Magzoid 

Here she witnessed the practices of 

collecting and recycling in Incan 

settlements, and gained an understanding 

of the communities’ way 

of living that took advantage of natural resources. 

The young artist saw natural materials 

being used for a range of purposes, 

including building their adobes: dwellings 

made from bricks comprised of a mixture 

of soil, sand, water and straw, with braided 

reed roofs. The artist reflects, “I remember 

that they collected what the “Pacha Mama” 

(Mother Earth) gave them in the lands. They 

shared that food with us, because they 

made us feel that we were part of their fam- 

ily. They did not have much but, what they 

had, they shared it”. 

The practice of using what was given by 

nature enthralled Ana Liz. As the artist says, 

“My art has Inca antecedents, giving value 

to their care for nature. That’s my identity as 

an Ecuadorian: to remember to take care of 

the ecosystem and biodiversity; to generate 

connection with human beings and their natural 

environments.” In her art practice, she 

applies this knowledge and experience to 

the materials she uses and the ideas she 

embodies: that of the unity of man, nature, 

and creator. Ana Liz’s work maintains an 

abiding connection to the Bible, emphasizing 

positive messages that allow viewers to 

imagine, feel and remember what was and 

is our nature. The artist says that the use of 

abstraction in her work “helps me find the 

essence of God in his creation, reminding 

me that we must preserve his legacy. Nature 

and human beings have always been part of 

a single creation; and my work always aims 

to remember that unity.” 

Abstraction is a key feature of Ana Liz’s 

work, in conjunction with her Ecuadorian 

heritage and her current home in Dubai, 

where she has been based since 2019. 

Similar to the ways in which the artist saw 

the Incans using natural materials in their 

everyday lives, Ana Liz uses elements from 

the UAE area that she finds in the desert, in 

the sea, and in the mountains. Here, she not 

only seeks materiality for her works but also 

finds a source of deeper inspiration. Other 

influences include the abstract sculpture 

of British artists Henry Moore and Barbara 

Hepworth, whose semi-abstract sculptures 

often respond to the natural environments 

in which they sit. Cordero’s work also responds 

to land art, a movement inspired by 

minimalism and conceptual art as a way to 

think about and express the relationship of 


human beings to the planet. She admires 

Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti 

not only for his renowned sculptures, but 

also for his role as a painter and architect. 

For Ana Liz, the composition of Michelangelo’s 

works and their attempt at perfection is a 

source of inspiration, and she identifies with 

his statement: “The true work of art is but a 

shadow of divine perfection.” She also takes 

inspiration from his most famous sculpture, 

David (1501-1504), which was made from 

a discarded piece of marble. For Cordero, 

making use of even the smallest resource 

and not discarding it is to be aware of the importance 

of caring for the environment, and 

the need to take advantage of every minimal 

resource. 

This idea is central to Cordero’s own 

work, where she continuously mixes layer 

after layer of various natural materials that 

she finds in her local area such as leaves, 

flowers, sand, soil, and shells. Cordero says, 

“I collect everything and that is the skin of 

my painting. Each painting has a personal 

and unique seal.” The use of a wide range 

of materials and the practice of layering 

gives her abstract works a sense of depth, 

even a sculptural quality. Her images capture 

the essence of nature that she calls 

“organic abstraction,” and reflect her desire 

to separate from reality in order to connect 

with the spiritual through art. Nature, art 

and the divine are all inextricably connect- 

ed for the artist, who says, “Nature speaks 

to us with its details, shapes, and colors, it 

is the source of connection with God, who 

helps us to search for the true essence of 

the human being.” The preservation of nature, 

then, is tantamount to the preservation 

of spirituality, which is why the significance 

of care and conservation is omnipresent in 

her work. She uses a monochrome palette 

to communicate the essence of nature, emphasizing 

the shapes and movement of the 

landscapes that inform her work. “Rugged 

landscapes, mountains, plants - they have 

different shapes, movements. That’s why my 

art is not flat, because movement is life.” 

Ana Liz is continuously exploring, experimenting, 

and reevaluating her work, and 

is increasingly interested in alternative and 

more natural ways of creating art. The desert, 

the mountains, the birds, and the plants 

all contribute to her research and provide 

new ideas for her practice of organic abstraction. 

Materials that, for some, are dead 

and discarded, come back to life in Cordero’s 

works and give rise to new shapes and 

colors revealed by nature. Using nature itself 

as raw material, Cordero makes it tangible 

and permanent through the techniques of 

abstraction and layering that she uses. Her 

work reflects her passion for the nature that 

she loves, and aims to promote a practice of 

care through its enhancement and preservation 

in her paintings. 

What medium of art do you use, and why 

that medium? 

I love exploring new artistic mediums. I 

think it’s part of my practice. My approach 

starts by observing nature and learning from 

it. Understand well which elements of nature 

that not alive anymore I can incorporate 

them in my artworks so that I can give them 

a second life without destroying any natural 

environment. And, of course, that changes 

depending on the physical location I’m working 

on. For example, in my latest series that 

I created fully here in Dubai, I have used 

palm leaves, sand, seashells, and Bougainville 

flowers. Due to the lack of internal water 

in all of these elements, their size does not 

change even for hundreds of years. Therefore, 

I can safely use them in my works with 

some preservation materials that prevent the 

works from getting damaged and provide a 

full guarantee in time.

What are the projects you’ve worked on 

worldwide? 

Regardless of the few exhibitions I did 

back in Ecuador during my early years, I 

have always said that Dubai supported me 

to be the artist I am today. My works have 

been present in various art fairs and in different 

places in the United Arab Emirates. 

At the moment I just finished my most 

recent installation named “Reefocus”; 

100% recycled to raise awareness in our 

daily practices such as: reducing, reusing, 

and recycling so as not to contaminate the 

oceans. Additionally, I also decided to open 

a new art community named “Chaka”, which 

means “bridge” in Quechua (the language 

of my Inca ancestors), creating a symbiosis 

of artists and artisans who promote care for 

the environment and rescue ancestral techniques, 

to take care of its preservation. 

I have been invited to participate internationally 

but at the moment I have not received 

a proposal that challenges 

me as an artist, I believe that challenges 

motivate you much more. 

And I am sure that that exhibition 

and that challenge will come. I 

would love to show my art in different 

places around the world but I think 

everything will come in its time. 

Any collaborations that you have 

worked on with, i.e., brands, etc. 

I believe that Dubai Culture has 

been the most important entity I 

have worked with in my career as an 

artist. They have been supporting 

my art and, by selecting me to occupy 

House 40 in Al Fahidi Historical 

Neighborhood, has allowed me not 

only to show my art but to educate 

and raise awareness among people 

about caring for the environment and 

giving value to sustainable art. All of 

that through a lens that is aligned 

with Dubai Heritage architecture, 

materials, traditions, and history. 

What are your plans for the future? Are 

there any projects, or collaborations you 

could hint on? 

One of the most important exhibitions 

I have in the near future is 

those that will be part of COP28, including 

an exhibition at Expo 2020 

and another on Alserkal Avenue, 

one of the most important art showcases 

here in UAE and in the GCC 

Region. For that, I am working on 

new art products with 100% recycled 

materials and reducing my impact 

on nature to zero, generating 

zero pollution and zero wastage. 

But in general, my plan is to 

continue creating life through my 

paintings, it is my daily focus, giving 

my best. So, although I have 

some projects and proposals, I am 

always looking to see the surprises 

that life will bring me. Life is an adventure. 

What are your thoughts on the 

current art landscape? 

The current artistic scene is too 

broad to define my opinion with a 

single word. My art is not intended to be controversial 

in order to be appreciated, nor is 

it intended to tell you something irrelevant. 

I believe that my art, as I mentioned, promotes 

life. I like to see the reaction of people 

when they appreciate my work and I see 

that they leave my studio with a sensation 

of peace and calm but above all they take 

away a strong and positive message from 

my artworks. 


What message are you trying to deliver 

with your art? 

My inspiration, as well as my gifts, all 

come from God. He is always using me to 

create art and to deliver the messages that 

He wants me to deliver to His creation. My 

permanent intention as an artist is to transform 

negative situations (like the lockdown 

during COVID, the wars, the human losses, 

etc.) into positive messages like care, love, 

hope, and freedom, which all them come 

from God. I believe that all human beings 

have been gifted with the ability to transform 

and evolve, just as some things that we believe 

to be dead can be transformed into life. 

That is why in my work I use dead flowers 

and leaves, which symbolize the negative 

situation, and incorporate them into my work, 

allowing them to have a second chance, a 

second life beyond oblivion by being an active 

protagonist of that positive message that 

beats at the heart of each of my artworks. 

Materiality is the skin of my canvas that 

speaks with its 3D shapes and allows us 

to imagine, transforming a painting into a 

sculpture over the canvas. My art has movement, 

and that means progress, growth, and 

another important aspect is the influence 

where I am changes. 

What message would you like to give to 

our readers and young artists? 

Love what you do. It doesn’t matter what 

people think of you. The important thing is 

that you believe in what you do. Life doesn’t 

just give you one chance; it gives you several 

chances. Be yourself, find your own identity, 

do not imitate others, be creative, and 

listen to the voice of your heart. 

If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will 

believe in you. A closed door is just a door, 

there are many open doors for those who 

work, do not give up because from the hand 

of God, everything is possible.

breast cancer patient but also the internal

for these patients, this is an ongoing, 

lifelong fight. Their unwavering bravery is 

what sets alight to their eternal torch of hope 

within. 

Yet, the purpose of this installation extends 

far beyond a momentary engagement. 

It screams for each one of us to undertake a 

profound transformation rooted in empathy 

and in using our voices to uplift and empower 

those who battle silently and often go unheard. 

Through this initiative, each one becomes 

a beacon and a voice for the fighters, 

survivors, and those we have lost. 

The spokesperson of Magzoid Magazine 

remarked, “Art has forever been a canvas for 

humanity’s most profound stories. With ‘Harmony’, 

we’ve embarked on uncharted territories. 

Here, AI doesn’t replace the artist; it 

portrays the artist, understanding and echoing

with social causes. “In Harmony, we see

Aisha 

UNVEILING THE FLAVORS OF GOLDEN RIBBONS 

In this exclusive interview, we explore the remarkable journey of 

Chef Aisha. Her story is a testament to determination and seizing 

opportunities. Trained in the culinary arts, Chef Aisha transitioned 

from her background in education to embrace Middle Eastern culture 

and eventually become an artful chocolatier. During the COVID-19 

pandemic, she realized her dream with Golden Ribbon Chocolates, 

offering Belgian chocolates with homemade fillings and a fusion of 

French-Arabic flavors. Chef Aisha’s commitment to quality and sustainability 

shines through her culinary creations, making this interview 

a fascinating dive into her inspiring world. 

Q & A 

Can you share your personal journey of becoming a chef, especially 

in light of your experience as a breast cancer survivor and 

a celiac? How did these challenges shape your culinary career? 

I aspired to be a chef from the age of 14. Despite initial plans to 

pursue culinary arts, I ended up becoming a teacher due to family 

expectations and life events. However, at 34, a breast cancer 

diagnosis reshaped my perspective. It wasn’t until COVID-19 hit 

that I finally decided to chase my culinary dreams. I started with a 

chocolate-making course, and chefs at the school encouraged me 

to undertake a full pastry chef diploma. I completed the diploma 

in six months, despite being over 50. My dream of running a small 

culinary business has far exceeded my expectations. This journey 

has taught me the importance of pursuing your passion, regardless 

of your age or life circumstances. 

So living with celiac disease can be quite demanding. How did 

you adapt to your dietary restrictions and managed to create a 

delectable array of dishes while ensuring they are gluten free? 

Over two decades ago, I developed celiac disease due to the 

impact of chemotherapy during my breast cancer treatment. This 

life-altering condition forced me to reevaluate my diet and learn 

gluten-free baking from scratch. The resources and information for 

gluten-free living were limited at the time. 

Celiac disease required me to abstain from gluten for about a 

year to allow my body to recover. This journey was isolating and 

challenging, as I had to watch my food closely. However, my love for 

cooking and my engagement with online support groups helped me 

adapt and develop my gluten-free recipes. 

Today, the landscape for gluten-free living has improved significantly, 

with more available resources and information. My experiences 

have inspired me to share my knowledge and recipes to 

help others living with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Raising 

awareness about allergies and intolerances, particularly in children, 

is essential to improving their quality of life. 

Proper nutrition is crucial, both during and after breast cancer 

treatment. While undergoing treatment, your diet is limited, and after 

treatment, it’s essential to focus on nutrition, diet, and exercise to 

support your overall well-being.

What inspired you to start Golden Ribbons chocolate, and 

how do your personal experiences influence the chocolate making 

process and product offerings in your company? 

I was brought into this project by my husband, who had always 

dreamt of opening a boutique selling high-quality products. He 

was particularly inspired by the chocolate I made during my time 

at culinary school in Dubai, and he wanted to feature it in our shop. 

This project allowed me to bring elements of my rural upbringing in 

northern Ohio into our venture. I grew up on an island surrounded 

by vineyards and fruit trees, where fresh, homemade food was the 

norm. We rarely relied on supermarkets, as we sourced much of 

our food locally through gardening, fishing, and relationships with 

nearby farmers. This upbringing greatly influenced my approach 

to cooking and nutrition. I prioritize fresh, unprocessed ingredients 

and aim to keep sugar levels low in my recipes. I believe in the 

importance of nurturing your body with nutritious foods, and this 

philosophy extends to my cooking and baking. Some may argue 

that fresh cooking is time-consuming and impractical, but I’ve found 

that once you start providing your body with wholesome, delicious

Celiac disease is not something to be taken lightly. People often 

misunderstand it, thinking it’s a dietary trend. But for those like me 

with severe allergies, even a small amount of gluten can send us to 

the hospital. It’s similar to a nut allergy in seriousness. However, dietary 

restrictions shouldn’t discourage you from pursuing a culinary 

career. I, for instance, focus on gluten-free recipes for safety and 

enjoy the process. 

For aspiring chefs, start by collecting recipes and networking 

with peers in the industry. Extensive research is key, understanding 

ingredient interactions and cooking science. Knowing these fundamentals, 

like the reaction between baking soda and vinegar, is 

crucial, especially in gluten-free cooking, where leavening agents 

might need creative substitutes. 

Culinary careers require dedication and passion. It’s my hobby; I 

explore recipes and ingredients, constantly learning. If you’re genuinely 

interested in the culinary world, it becomes a way of life. Most 

chefs share this enthusiasm, allowing us to persevere despite life’s 

challenges. 

Could you share some of your favorite gluten free ingredients 

or subsidies that you frequently use in your creations and 

do these substitutes necessarily impact the taste and texture of 

your product? 

Being in a kitchen, especially as aspiring chefs, comes with significant 

pressure. You’re constantly under pressure to deliver dishes 

in a small space, working with other chefs who have their own personalities 

and egos. This can be even more challenging for women 

in the industry. However, these challenges should not deter you. It’s 

essential to maintain professionalism, keep your workspace clean, 

and expect the same from your colleagues. 

When it comes to gluten-free cooking, there are various ingredients 

at play. Rice flour, particularly white rice flour, serves as the 

foundation for many gluten-free recipes. Brown rice flour can provide 

additional binding and structure to your dishes. Potato starch 

aids in leavening and lightening the texture of your creations. Each 

gluten-free flour serves a specific purpose in different recipes. 

For gluten-free bread, golden loaf is a preferred choice, and their 

pizza rounds have received acclaim from gluten-free and non-gluten-free 

individuals alike. Various stores in the UAE, such as Spinneys, 

Marks and Spencer, and Gibsons, offer an array of gluten-free 

products and flours, making it easier for those with gluten sensitivities 

to enjoy diverse and delicious foods. Dubai and the UAE are fortunate 

in this regard, with a wealth of options for gluten-free dining 

and cooking compared to some other regions like the United States. 

As someone who has triumphed over personal health challenges, 

what message and advice would you like to share with 

that audience? 

It’s crucial, especially for women dealing with breast cancer, to 

prioritize self-care. If you’re not feeling well or have suspicions about 

your health, don’t delay – consult a doctor and get regular checkups. 

Your well-being is not only important to you but also to your 

family, children, spouse, parents, and everyone who relies on you. 

Sometimes, we treat our cars better than our health. If your car 

breaks down on the highway, you immediately get it fixed. But when 

it comes to health issues, people often ignore or hope they’ll disappear. 

With breast cancer, early detection is everything for survival 

rates. Take it seriously; it can be the difference between minimal, 

manageable treatment and a terminal diagnosis where there’s little 

that can be done. 

I encourage all women to invest some time in self-care. Whether 

it’s watching a sunset, pursuing your passions, or simply taking a 

moment for yourself, these small acts of self-care can make a significant

In the vibrant realm of contemporary art, 

Agnes Denes’ “Wheatfield – A Confrontation” 

stands as an enduring testament to 

the power of creativity to confront societal 

norms and challenge the status quo. In the 

summer of 1982, amidst the towering steel 

and concrete of Manhattan’s Financial District, 

Denes orchestrated a thought-provoking 

masterpiece that was both audacious 

and evocative. Her canvas was not the conventional 

medium of paint and canvas but 

the very earth itself, on a two-acre landfill in 

Battery Park, Lower Manhattan. 

A Seeded Revolution: 

The genesis of “Wheatfield” was a labor 

of love and determination. It was an audacious 

statement against the backdrop of the 

world’s financial epicenter. Over 200 truckloads 

of soil were brought in to create a fertile 

plot for wheat. With 285 furrows painstakingly 

dug by hand, Denes and her team 

cleared the ground of rocks and debris to 

prepare the canvas for her vision. It was a 

labor of patience, persistence, and passion. 

The Paradox of Value: 

The true power of “Wheatfield” was in its 

paradoxical nature. Here, on land estimated 

to be worth a staggering $4.5 billion, a 

humble wheat field stood tall, swaying in the 

breeze just blocks away from the towering 

symbols of Wall Street and the World Trade 

Center. Denes had planted a question in the 

heart of the financial district - what are our 

true priorities, and what are we willing to invest 

in? 

This colossal art project was a universal 

symbol, representing food, energy, commerce,

and waste to world hunger and 

ecological concerns. In its humble yield of 

over 1000 pounds of healthy, golden wheat,

endeavor in an exhibition titled “The International

Subodh Kerkar, a 64-year-old artist, began his journey from a medical 

career running a hospital in Goa 35 years ago. He transitioned 

to art, evolving from someone with skills into a conceptual artist who 

uses history as a cornerstone of his work. His activism, which started 

as a student, continues to influence his beliefs, and he advocates 

for contemporary art in India. Kerkar is the founder of one of the 

largest private contemporary art spaces in the country, a sustainable 

venture welcoming hundreds of visitors daily. His dream now 

includes setting up an Indian Ocean museum, celebrating the rich 

history and connections that span this vital trade route. 

Can you recall a specific project from your career as an artist 

that stands out as a turning point? A project that brought you 

a great sense of accomplishment and perhaps altered your perspective 

on your work in a significant way? 

Throughout your artistic journey, have you discovered a particular 

medium that continually captivates your interest, compelling 

you to revisit and explore it time and again? 

In the beginning, I primarily worked with watercolors and acrylics, 

but over time, I’ve found that every material can be my medium. I 

started using recycled materials, like old diaries, when I observed 

people littering plastic bottles. I felt compelled to convey a message 

against littering, so water bottles became an unexpected medium 

for my art. I’ve experimented with various materials - tires, scrap, 

you name it. Sometimes the medium guides the theme, and other 

times, the theme directs me to the medium. It’s a two-way street. 

Throughout my artistic journey, I’ve come to realize the profound 

impact of combining art with activism and storytelling. One project 

that stands out as pivotal in my career is the creation of a history 

museum unlike any other. In traditional history museums, you encounter 

relics, texts, and costumes from the past. However, my museum 

is unique in that it exclusively features contemporary works 

of art, each meticulously selected to narrate historical stories. This 

approach has become a major focus in my work, and I aim to continue 

developing similar museums. In the future, I envision projects 

like a beer museum and a children’s museum, with a grand dream of 

establishing an Indian Ocean Museum, highlighting the rich history 

and culture of the Indian Ocean region. 


As someone deeply involved in museums and activism, you’ve 

witnessed the art world from a distinctive vantage point. Amidst 

the rich tapestry of India’s art scene, what are your key observations 

and reflections? 

We have numerous highly talented artists, particularly in places 

like Goa, despite the limited population. However, there’s a glaring 

issue: the scarcity of platforms for these artists. The problem extends 

to art education. When I mention that only a fraction of the 

population connects with contemporary art, I’m highlighting the 

lack of art education, which is crucial for cultivating an informed art 

community and a thriving art market. In our country, art selection in 

public spaces is often done by government officials who lack the 

necessary knowledge and expertise. This leads to the fundamental 

problem that we lack leaders with a deep understanding of art 

and curatorial skills. The solution lies in having qualified art curators 

make these decisions, which, unfortunately, is not the norm. This 

shortage of platforms and a disconnect between those in leadership 

positions and the art world remains a significant challenge. 

Looking forward, your impact on the art world is undeniable. Beyond 

the remarkable museum projects you’re involved in, can 

you share any personal projects or ventures on the horizon that 

you’re currently dedicating your creative energy to? 

My mission revolves around making a significant impact on the 

world of art and culture. I’m not just focused on running a museum; 

it’s just a starting point. My true passion lies in providing platforms 

for emerging artists to showcase their work, supporting various art 

projects, and creating unique cultural spaces. 

One of my dream projects is the Indian Ocean Museum, celebrating 

the rich history of the region. I also envision a forest sculpture 

park, where art seamlessly integrates with nature for a unique experience. 

I’m committed to art education and spreading awareness. 

Through museums like the Museum of Goa and potentially the Museum 

of Delhi or Bombay, I aim to highlight the history of these places 

and inspire new art. 

In essence, my mission is to create, inspire, and educate through 

the world of art and culture. 

What is the underlying message or theme that you aim to convey 

to your audience through your work and projects? 

I believe the message is rather straightforward. In whatever form 

of art or creative endeavor you pursue, it’s vital to be sincere and 

authentic. While you might create something for commercial purposes, 

you should always be conscious that this is your livelihood, 

not necessarily your artistic expression. Artistry requires continuous 

evolution, learning, and thinking. 

Art isn’t merely a matter of skill; it’s about intellect, ideas, and 

thoughtful expression. Having the technical skills is like understanding 

grammar; it’s essential but not sufficient to be a writer. To be an 

artist, you must have something to convey, a message to share. 

Artists should inherently be political, in the sense that they engage 

with and reflect upon society and its complexities. Artists serve as 

receptors, sensors, and transmitters of ideas in a community. Their 

role is significant, and most of what artists create contributes to a 

broader commentary on the world. 

As our audience comprises many enthusiastic young readers 

and artists, what wisdom or guidance would you like to share 

with them, considering your extensive experience and artistic 

journey? 

To the younger generation and aspiring artists, I’d like to offer 

some advice. First and foremost, stay in touch with your inner self, be 

sensitive to your emotions and thoughts. Secondly, just as a singer 

should listen to other singers and a writer should read other writers, 

as an artist, it’s essential to connect with and appreciate the work of 

your fellow artists. Keep an open mind. Sometimes, it’s necessary to 

reset your preconceived notions, like putting your head in a washing 

machine and starting with a clean slate. Lastly, don’t get caught up 

in the competitive mindset of trying to be the number one or number 

two artist. Art is not a competition among humans; it’s an expression 

of your unique self. So, create with sincerity, absorb new experiences, 

and continue learning on your artistic journey.

Shangri-La Dubai, he shares the initiatives that he is taking under his 

supervision. 

Can you tell us about Shangri-La Dubai’s approach to sustainable 

dining and how it aligns with the hotel’s overall sustainability 

initiatives? 

At Shangri-La Dubai, we take a comprehensive approach to sustainable 

dining, aligning with our overarching sustainability initiatives. 

Our goal is to provide a memorable dining experience while 

minimizing our environmental impact. We source locally and ethically, 

reduce food waste, and raise awareness among our guests. 

What steps has the hotel taken to ensure that its dining outlets 

prioritize sustainability, from sourcing ingredients to food waste 

reduction? 

In 2014, the Shangri-La Group launched a culinary initiative, 

“Rooted in Nature” to empower our hotels to choose locally and 

ethically sourced ingredients and provide environmentally friendly 

menu choices for our guests, while supporting local producers in attaining 

sustainable business growth by choosing them as our business 

partners and enhancing their market exposure. Since then, 

Shangri-La Dubai has diligently worked towards curating “Rooted in 

Nature” menus across all our F&B outlets, proactively encouraging 

our guests to select this menu as the sustainable choice. 

Could you share examples of sustainable food sourcing practices 

or partnerships that Shangri-La Dubai has established with 

local suppliers or farmers? 

We have established partnerships with local suppliers and farmers 

to source fresh, seasonal ingredients. This not only supports local 

businesses but also reduces transportation emissions. We also 

work closely with these partners to ensure sustainable agricultural 

practices. 

How does the hotel promote awareness among guests about 

the importance of sustainable dining and the impact of their 

food choices? 

To raise awareness among our guests, we provide information 

about the sustainability efforts in our dining outlets through menu 

descriptions and in-room materials. 


Could you provide insights into the hotel’s efforts to support 

local culinary traditions and culture while also focusing on sustainability 

in its dining offerings? 

We aim to strike a balance between preserving local culinary 

traditions and promoting sustainability. We feature a wide array of 

regional specialities and signature items across all our dining outlets 

that pay tribute to local culture and culinary traditions. 

What advice do you have for guests who wish to make sustainable 

dining choices during their stay at Shangri-La Dubai? 

To make sustainable dining choices at Shangri-La Dubai, we encourage 

our guests to opt for seasonal and locally sourced dishes 

featured in our “Rooted in Nature” menu and to avoid excessive 

food wastage. 

Our commitment to sustainable dining is a core part of the Shangri-La 

Dubai experience, and we continually strive to enhance our 

sustainability efforts in collaboration with our valued guests. 

Can you discuss any specific sustainability certifications or

At Shangri-La Dubai, we operate under ISO 14001, which is our 

overall standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental 

management system. This supports our mission to improve our 

environmental performance through more efficient use of resources 

and reduction of waste. 

What innovative measures have been implemented to reduce 

food waste and promote responsible consumption in the hotel’s 

dining establishments? 

Innovative measures to reduce food waste include implementing 

efficient kitchen practices and encouraging responsible consumption 

through portion control and our “Rooted in Nature” sustainable 

menu options. In addition, we use advanced technology to help 

minimize food waste by categorizing and measuring total food 

waste, allowing our culinary team to optimize production quantities 

in line with consumption. 

How has the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the hotel’s approach 

to sustainable dining, and what adaptations have been 

made to maintain sustainability efforts? 

The pandemic reinforced our commitment to sustainability. We 

adapted by enhancing food safety measures, implementing contactless 

menus made available via QR codes etc., and reducing 

single-use plastics. 

What other sustainability and CSR initiatives is Shangri-La involved 

in? 

Shangri-La is deeply committed to a range of sustainability and 

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. We have implemented 

robust waste management programs, taking significant 

steps to reduce our plastic usage, actively working to decrease our 

carbon footprint, and enhance our overall community engagement 

through key initiatives. 

A noteworthy initiative we’re piloting in Q1 2024 at one of our key 

properties, Shangri-La Muscat, is the Green Cross program. This 

program is designed to further reduce our carbon footprint and 

promote the best sustainable business practices in the hospitality 

industry. It encompasses water-saving initiatives and carbon-positive 

events. 

In addition to these environmental efforts, we are passionate 

about giving back to our communities. One of our key campaigns is 

Pink October, where we participate in raising awareness for breast 

cancer charities and donate wherever possible. This campaign 

underscores our position as a global company with a heart, eager 

to make a positive impact and connect with the communities we

OF SERENDIPITY ARTS FESTIVAL 

WILL KICK OFF IN PANJIM, GOA 

ON DECEMBER 15

The Serendipity Arts Festival 2023 is 

set to be a grand celebration of India’s 

rich cultural heritage, spanning 

across a diverse array of disciplines 

including Performing, Visual, Culinary, and 

Performance Arts and Craft. This six-day 

festival, taking place from December 15th 

to 23rd in Panjim, Goa, promises to be an 

immersive experience, featuring over 150 

events and showcasing the works of more 

than 300 artists. With a mission to make art 

accessible to all, the festival focuses on fostering 

engagement, participation, and local 

interaction, particularly emphasizing support 

for artists and creative expressions from 

the South Asian region. 

The festival’s curatorial framework brings 

together a talented and diverse group of individuals 

to curate different sections. Craft 

is curated by Sandeep Kumar Sangaru 

and Anjana Somany, while Quasar Thakore 

Padamsee helms the Theatre segment. The 

culinary arts section is led by Chef Thomas 

Zacharias and The Locavore Team, offering 

a gastronomical journey that celebrates 

the connection between people and cultures. 

Music, with a wide range of genres, 

is curated by Bickram Ghosh and Ricky Kej. 

Geeta Chandran and Mayuri Upadhya curate 

classical, experimental, and contemporary 

dance performances and workshops, 

while Veeranganakumari Solanki and Vidya 

Shivadas are the Visual Arts curators. Additionally, 

special curators, including Zubin 

Balaporia (Music), Elizabeth Yorke & Anusha 

Murthy (Culinary Arts), and Bhagyashree

unique dimensions to the festival’s offerings. 

The festival is dedicated to providing 

a platform for South Asian artists to amplify

and sustainability are core values, and 

the 2023 edition features independent and 

collaborative projects that highlight these

The festival takes place across multiple 

venues, including the Old GMC Complex, 

the Art Park, Azad Maidan, and more, offering

the true story of a British comedian and photographer’s 

experiences in war-torn Afghanistan,

writing, and illustrating for children 

provide insights into India’s print publication 

history and the possibilities for artists and

The Serendipity Arts Festival 2023 is a

Could you please share some of the most 

interesting and memorable projects you’ve 

had the opportunity to work on during your 

journey as an ARTrepreneur? 

I was invited to talk about art as a business, 

which was a memorable moment as I was 

just starting my business. I had the chance 

to explain step by step what’s important when 

starting an art-focused business. Another significant 

project was when I was entrusted with 

a festival project for Porsche, involving over 

10,000 attendees. This was remarkable for 

my small brand, as I had to manage a largescale 

project with limited resources. Over the 

years, we’ve partnered with renowned brands 

like Porsche, Spotify, Google, Dior, Sephora, 

Unilever, Dubai Culture, and World Art Dubai, 

which has been an incredible journey. These 

partnerships often came through referrals or 

recommendations from people who attended 

my workshops or saw my work on Instagram. 

This passion for creating art in unique ways 

and making extraordinary things happen has 

been the driving force behind our growth. 

What are your plans for the future, and are 

there any exciting projects on the horizon 

that you could share with us? 

I’m currently deeply involved in projects 

related to raising awareness, such as breast 

cancer awareness. I’m passionate about collaborating 

with like-minded brands. 

Looking ahead, I’m saving for a mobile art 

initiative to reach more areas. I also plan to 

expand into merchandise when I renew my 

license. My dream is to have a mobile art caravan 

that can travel and bring art to different 

communities. It’s a challenging endeavor, but 

one I’m eager to pursue. 

As an ARTrepreneur and host of art events 

and an observer of exceptional talent, 

what’s your take on Dubai’s current art 

scene and the potential you’ve encountered 

among artists who might redefine the artistic 

landscape? 

The art market in Dubai is incredibly diverse, 

offering both the exclusive, high-end, and luxury 

segment for collectors and more accessible 

options for artists. It’s a realm where artists can 

decide how they want to express themselves, 

whether through exclusive and expensive 

pieces or works that value personal expression 

over financial worth. While I appreciate 

the diversity of styles and offerings, I’m more 

inclined to focus on my own unique approach 

to art. Competition isn’t a concern; every artist 

has their own distinctive style and audience. 

As Dubai continues to attract a diverse population, 

the art scene evolves, and new markets 

emerge. Dubai’s art landscape is ever-changing, 

which makes it an exciting place to be for 

both artists and art enthusiasts. 

What message of inspiration and guidance 

would you like to impart to our readers, especially 

to aspiring young artists who might 

be looking up to you for advice and direction 

in their artistic journeys? 

My core message is all about encouragement. 

In our art workshops, we’ve combined 

art with other activities. It’s a way to break 

through the initial hesitation some people have 

about embracing their artistic side. 

Many folks, men and women alike, have untapped 

artistic potential. They often don’t see 

themselves as creative. But by connecting art 

to their existing passions, like sports or cooking, 

we can help them discover hidden talents.

serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing, 

lifelong battle that these patients endure, 

igniting the torch of hope within them. 

The initiative is more than a momentary 

engagement; it’s a call for profound transformation 

rooted in empathy. It urges every 

visitor to become a beacon and a voice for 

breast cancer fighters, survivors, and those 

who have been lost.

What is the central theme and objective of the “Ethereal Echoes” 

exhibition, and what makes it a unique and engaging experience 

for visitors? 

I find this project a unique collaboration of two artists from different 

media — painting and fashion, different sides of the world, 

different cultures, and heritage backgrounds. Yet, for both Yousef 

and me, the essence that unites us is Beauty. Beauty that should 

save the world. I’m sure our dreams are the same, peaceful coexistence 

of people and countries, awareness about the future of our 

planet, and preservation of nature. The whole project Cosmodreams 

is about people’s desires, dreams, and aspirations. For instance, 

what people of the desert are dreaming about? Desert turns into 

forest, oasis, rivers and waterfalls, fruit orchards. “Ethereal Echoes” 

embodies this vision. It invites everyone to join us in dreaming, to 

find inspiration, and to collectively work towards making our world 

a better place. 

The article mentions four unprecedented multidimensional 

cross-cultural creations. What inspired these creations, and 

what is their significance in the context of the exhibition? 

These creations blend art, fashion, and technology with the rich 

heritage of Saudi Arabia. They represent a harmonious fusion of 

cultural influences and approaches, showcasing the intersection of 

diverse artistic talents and heritage backgrounds. In the context of 

the exhibition, they symbolize the convergence of different realms

down from a challenge, Yohji has collaborated with adidas to 

create a brand-new masterpiece called Y-3 Kendo, part of the 

Y-3 collection. 


The most avant-garde Yohji offering under the Y-3 brand is undoubtedly 

the sneaker, which adopts an almost ice skating 

shoe-like form. offered in two versions The Y-3 Kendo and its 

high-top counterpart, the Y-3 Kendo Pros. 

The shoe is an incredibly stunning piece of footwear that is 

modeled after the classic Adidas Superstars. This is unquestionably 

the one sneaker that all enthusiasts of avant-garde 

fashion should have in their collection to go with stunningly

MAISON MARGIELA S/S 24 

In the foyer of Maison Margiela, projected 

imagery of a transatlantic ship towering 

over the roofs of a twentieth-century 

English port city foreshadows the 

show. On its passage to America, an 

adolescent meeting between the parents 

of Count and Hen unfolds: one, the 

son of an impoverished aristocratic line; 

the other, the daughter of an industrial 

family of pretense. The scene informs 

a collection founded on the voyage’s 

steely climate, its characters, and a cargo 

loaded with traveling trunks full of 

clothes that will ultimately end up in the 

adaptive hands of their future descendants. 

Inheritance is an act of transmutation. 

When a belonging is passed down 

from one generation to another, its genetics 

are modified and advanced. For 

the Co-Ed Spring-Summer 2024 Collection, 

Maison Margiela stages a search 

for individual truth reflected in the generational 

adaptation of an inherited 

wardrobe. Evoking the memory of one 

age through the radical eyes of the next, 

Creative Director John Galliano triggers 

a chemical reaction between eras and 

attitudes founded in a flashback narrative 

imagined within the Maison’s ongoing 

chronicle of the characters Count 

and Hen. 


Outerwear and suits fuse the tropes 

of the masculine wardrobe with the 

classic grammar of the feminine wardrobe, 

culminating in coats underpinned 

with sculptural basques. Dancing-hem 

culottes re-appropriate hacked-up 

mid-century dresses, a form language 

reverberated in the sculptural beetle 

backs of a denim car coat and coats with 

adapted maritime collars. Tabi brogues 

and Tabi spectator shoes are interpreted 

in several forms. Deck shoes nod at 

the narrative’s premise. Shopping bags, 

bowling bags, and vase bags adapt 

the Rorschach dots, while hats mimic 

mid-century shapes through naïve construction. 

Illustrating the generational impulse for 

customization that reflects one’s contemporary 

truth, dresses employ the 

practice of exfoliage. Here, the top layer 

of the bustier is ripped away to reveal 

its inside construction, lowered over the 

skirt, and laminated with a relief-effect. 

It mirrors the new technique of pressage 

in which dresses and shirts are laminated 

across drapes and creases, leaving 

unvarnished reliefs as if flattened by 

the pressure of a suitcase. The spirit of 

adaptation infuses dresses with shiny 

fragments of bows, a motif similarly 

exercised in misfit evening silhouettes, 

spontaneously customized with tape or 

work-in-progress stitching. 

In a study of inherited tailoring, blazers 

imbued with the memory of sports 

clothes coolly draped around the neck 

imitate the nonchalant body-language 

observed in archival imagery of mauvais 

garçons. Exercised through cutting, 

they reflect the unconscious gestures 

with which we naturally imprint the garments 

we wear: the shrug of a jacket, 

the cowling of a pocket, the runkling 

of a hem. The Maison’s Rorschach 

cutting, which conjures pareidolic outlines 

of familiar characters, evolves into 

Rorschach dotting in an organza skirt 

treated with printed pied de poule and 

lamination, a process echoed in a velour 

coat.

Designer and founder Chitose 

Abe explores sacai’s signature 

codes, taking some light inspiration 

from 70’s punk and the 

spirit that came from a cultural movement 

that reacted to another time when 

the world seemed in flux. Seen through 

Abe’s eyes, sacai always looks towards 

the future with hopeful positivity and, 

this time, plays with notions of uniform, 

‘head to toe’, ‘inside out’, and experimenting 

with volume to make a new shape. 

Classic suiting is ‘hybridized’, a device 

that’s always been at the heart of the 

house. Denim is bonded to suiting fabrics; 

flower print is spliced with moleskin 

born of 1940’s French workwear, with 

the pattern this time re-created through 

cutting and sewing, coming to life as an 

appliqué detail. 

The idea of uniforms and uniformity 

leads to a ‘head to toe’ approach to 

dressing, where the jacket, shirt, and 

pants match, making the ultimate expression 

of a total look, whether pinstripe, 

denim, flower print, or re-contextualizing 

other traditional fabrics.

The exploration of suiting fabrics - pinstripe, 

tweed, and cotton gabardine 

- continues with another familiar sacai 

trope, making a new silhouette from 

something familiar. This time, folded 

pleats are used as a device to shrink 

proportions and make something smaller 

by reducing volume, appearing as 

generous peplums, pants, and skirts, 

or as intricate folds incorporated into 

knitwear. A sleeveless trench is slashed, 

and the fabric is condensed to make a 

narrower shape. The remix of tradition 

continues with an ‘inside out’ idea, inverting 

familiar clothing archetypes to 

give them a new perspective. 


An on-going friendship with Carhartt 

WIP expands on the idea of bonding - 

their famous ‘duck’ fabric melded with 

suiting, two Carhartt WIP jackets bonded 

together to make a new one, or a

JORGE ALEJANDRO VAZQUEZ: 

FROM CUBA TO THE UAE 

Jorge Alejandro Vazquez began his music studies in piano 

and violin at the age of 5 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, under 

the tutelage of Maestra Cecilia Rosales. From a very early 

age, he was motivated by classical music and great composers 

such as Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Chopin. Over the 

next 10 years, he continuously participated in concerts and 

events organized by the Vocational School of Music in Santiago 

de Cuba, consistently achieving outstanding results. 

At the age of 15, he earned a scholarship to Esteban Salas 

Conservatory and graduated four years later with degrees in 

Violin, Orchestra, and Pedagogy. In 2013, he joined the OSO 

(Symphony Orchestra of Oriente) and began working as a 

music teacher at the Vocational School of Music. 

Alejandro moved to the UAE in 2017 and started teaching 

at various prestigious institutions while performing as a 

soloist and with the NSO Symphony Orchestra of the UAE. 

One of his most recent achievements was being granted the 

highly esteemed UAE Golden Visa program. He looks forward 

to continuing to contribute to the elevation of culture 

and music education in Dubai. 

MARIA VIOLINIST: BRIDGING 

CULTURES THROUGH MUSIC 

Belarusian-born Maria Violinist embarked on an extraordinary 

musical journey that led her from the heart of Eastern 

Europe to the vibrant tapestries of India, Indonesia, and

Maria’s travels have imprinted a unique global flair
