THE MOVIE REVIEW
BY PAUL MARINO*
With his latest feature Dumb Money, Craig Gillespie's built upon the critical success of
his most recent films, 2017's “I, Tonya” and 2021's “Cruella”, both of which were nominated
for multiple Oscars, winning one each. Like those two movies, it is both serious and
tongue-in-cheek; but unlike those films, it's nuanced. Relatively complicated economic and
financial concepts are discussed with the same assumed understanding that one would
have regarding figure skating or fashion. That said, the picture is truly enjoyable, as
my wife Cindy, whose academic and professional careers were safely removed from Wall
Street, will attest. Both lead actor Paul Dano (Keith Gill, aka YouTuber Roaring Kitty)
and Pete Davidson (Keith's brother Kevin) turn in great comic performances.
Dumb Money - the derogative by which Wall Street elites refer to retail investors – is
about the real life GameStop short squeeze of early 2021 lead by Keith Gill. Despite my
contention that films are less about plot than the impact of a piece's themes on the
human condition, I, Paulie, would still argue hypocritically that it won't hurt to have
a deeper understanding of some of Dumb Money's economic ideas. In order to better
understand the GameStop short squeeze, first one must know what a
trading “short” is. One can play the market by purchasing instruments other than
specific companies' stocks. Shorting a stock is betting that company's stock price will
fall. One way to purchase a short is via a derivative. Basically, the price of the short
is negative 1 times (for example) the actual stock price, so as the stock itself, in the
case of Dumb Money, GameStop, drops in price, the short goes up. For example, imagine
that movie reviews by “Paul E. Coyote, Supergenius (stock ticker, PECS)” “fill you with the
urge to defecate”, and you want the company to go out of business. You purchase a share
of a Short of PECS when PECS stock price is $100. Then you sell the Short when PECS is
at $50. You make $50, and PECS investors lose that much. A short squeeze happens when
retail investors, aware of a large short position by Wall Street, buy that stock en masse
driving the price up, making money for themselves as individuals, while driving the
short down and costing the Wall, or at least some of its bricks, to collapse.
Dumb Money is a docudrama of how YouTube influencer Keith “Roaring Kitty” Gill lead
the 2021 GameStop short squeeze. Why, Roaring Kitty? Why in this era of streaming would
you invest in and live-stream promote a brick and mortar video game hardware, nonstreaming
software and accessory company? Why, Roaring Kitty, why GameStop? “I like the
stock!” Going online promoting investing in GameStop takes courage. Roaring Kitty is no
Cowardly Lion. He's going up against super-rich investors and hedge fund managers
shorting the stock like Mets' owner Steve Cohen, Ken Griffin and Gabe Plotkin (Vincent
D'Onofrio, Nick Offerman and Seth Rogan). Roaring Kitty's army of GameStop viewer/
investors includes Jennifer Campbell, Marcos the GameStop employee, and college students
Harmony and her girlfriend/roommate Riri who coin the online chant “Where's my pussy
at?” when they want Kitty to go online (America Ferrera, Anthony Ramos, Talia Ryder and
Myha'la Herrold). Together they are the GameStop short squeeze, stealing from the rich
and giving to themselves, the poor, using, of course, the trading platform Robin Hood. The
Descendants and Divergent Series' Shailene Woodley is fantastic as Keith's calming
influence(r) and wife Caroline.
Dumb Money has a cool Epilogue Scene showing how things worked out for many of its
characters' real life counterparts. As of this writing, it's still in theaters, but unlike
the the GameStop short squeezers, it's yet to turn a profit. Maybe you can counterman
that. Who dunt love an underdog? “Where's my posse at?” And trust me, you needn't have a
math degree or 45 years experience in accountingand finance to love Dumb Money. “I like
the flick!” See you guys next month!
* Paul is the host for The Hub on Canal's monthly Art in the Form of Film series.
Walt, , I Think You Would Be Sad
In the Opinion of
PhilipKippel
My name is Philip. I was born in 1982. I have high-functioning autism, which has made fitting into society an everyday challenge. Because of all that, I was
constantly teased, tormented and bullied by others, especially at school and summer camp. Sometimes, the bullying got so bad that during my high school
years I would even get off the city buses and walk all the way back to my house in the freezing cold.
Like many other people out there, I frequently found comfort, solace, love and salvation in various facets of pop culture, whether they be movies, TV shows,
theme parks and more. One pop culture institution that has been a huge part of my life since I was a baby is Disney.
Even though I was often bullied in school and elsewhere over my love for Disney both physically and emotionally, almost everything that came out of Disney
brought me joy, including their films, shows, attractions, merchandise, you name it! My very first trip to Walt Disney World was back in October of 1982, when I
was only six months old at the opening of EPCOT! I’ve been hooked on all things Disney ever since. My parents and I went on many trips to Walt Disney World,
Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Disney Cruises. Sometimes, they would even surprise me with last minute trips to Disney World and Disneyland,
even leaving after coming home from school on several occasions.
Even with all my problems, Disney was one place where I knew I could go and things were still good and where genuine love and friendship still survived and
thrived, where anyone's day could be made with a mere smile, hug or kiss from any of the characters and cast members. No nastiness, no cynicism, no bullying,
no judgment, no fears of jealousy, just pure and honest love!
When September 11th, 2001 happened, my folks and I decided to leave our home in Brooklyn, New York and move to Celebration, Florida so we could be closer to
Walt Disney World, which had become a second home to me. Things were overall great during the first few years of our time as Florida residents going to Disney
World regularly.
Unfortunately, as time went on, things started to take a turn for the worse. The overall quality of the product began to decline, eventually getting to the point
where a place that I could once turn to - to get away from bullying and the real world, if only for a little while, started to bully me and the aforementioned
pure and honest love one was meant to feel in the world of Disney had begun to dissipate. Even though I take responsibility for my own mental states then and
now, this does not exonerate the WDW cast from their current poor training, attitude problems, and lack of understanding including failures to understand
neurological disorders such as being on the Autism Spectrum. Cast members turned meaner, nastier and more close-minded, focusing too much on kids to the
point where adults were frequently sidelined. To make matters worse, such declines in cast member attitudes and morale began to lead to misunderstandings
that resulted in me having confrontations with Cast! (I even applied to work at Disney and was told Disney would not hire me because my disability was not
'obvious'! But eventually, Disney did hire me and I 'survived' for close to 5 years.)
To top it all off, we have the recent diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, which are nothing more than hollow acts of virtue-signaling, which began in 2017 and
reached their zenith in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd and the riots that followed. These unwanted injections of politics into Disney, from
politically-motivated changes to classic attractions such as Splash Mountain to abandoning Disney Look guidelines for the cast members, have made myself and
millions of others feel less wanted at Disney’s parks.
These attempts have not only made the parks less inclusive (especially for the Autism Spectrum) and more exclusive, but have also ripped out most of Disney’s
overall heart and as a result soul-destroyed Walt Disney’s original magic. These shallow DIE attempts seem to go against the intentions of Walt himself as the
Parks being places where families could get away from reality to go to a 'safe place' for a while.
The downfall of Disney parks has made my life and millions of other peoples’ lives extremely miserable, even to the point where it has ruined countless lives,
torn many families apart and destroyed countless personal and professional friendships and relationships. Because of all this, if attendance and profits are to
increase at every Disney Outlet, Disney's Management must hear our pleas, give in to our demands, abandon their woke agendas and do everything to reverse
all of the unwanted politically-motivated changes in Disney's 'persona' and beyond. Yours truly and the rest of the planet will be ever so grateful if Disney's
Management would actually listen and revise things that changed and restore the true Disney magic.
BY RELUCTANT GENIUS
I’m guessing that most of us have gone to a movie theater once or twice in our lifetime, some of us weekly, or maybe even more. It is a
part of our culture and an amazing part of our history. In the past, going to a theater was one of just a few ways to see a lm.
Nowadays, you can watch movies on your phone, computer, smart TV or home theater projection systems. The art of going out to see a
show isn’t quite the same.
My rst memory of watching a movie was at the local drive-in. My parents had a brown cargo van and my sister and I had a little area
to sleep in the back. We ate popcorn and sweeties and watched a couple of cartoons they
showed before the feature. After being told to settle down and go to bed at least six times due to
my hyperactive self I nally laid my head in the pillow and my parents settled in to the movie.
Little did they know that I was lurking in the dark, waiting to catch a glimpse of the magic of the
silver screen. Believe it or not I still have memories from my rst experience at the drive in. The
mono speaker in the window blares and I slowly pop my head up high enough to watch one of
the nal scenes of Easy Rider. While I didn’t understand the violence as the two protagonists
were shot down in cold blood, I still had sad emotions and watched my parents share theirs. It
was then and there I was hooked on watching movies.
Today in the United States there are around 300 active drive-in theaters. Last month my
girlfriend and I went to one in Buena Vista Colorado called “The Comanche” and there was no
doubt that as soon as we pulled into the venue, glorious and wonderful memories of going to
drive-in ooded into my brain and I felt at ease. Ultimately, though, there was also a sadness.
The parking lot wasn’t entirely full, and I realized I was witnessing a dying breed.
The staff was amazing. The Whoppers, Raisinets, and the popcorn were perfect. But I wasn’t
happy for some reason and I’m not sure why. My guess is that I was thinking of a time when
there will be no more drive-ins and the number of people that may never get to experience
what I was experiencing that very night. There’s no doubt that this art form is fading away
and it’s sad. Here’s a brief history of one of America’s last surviving ways of watching art.
The history of drive-in theaters in the United States dates back to the early 20th century. The rst drive-in theater, called Park-In Theaters,
was opened in Camden, New Jersey in 1933 by Richard Hollingshead. It featured a large outdoor screen and a parking lot where
moviegoers could park their cars and watch movies from the comfort of their vehicles.
The concept of drive-in theaters quickly gained popularity, especially during the 1950s and 1960s. At their peak, there were over 4,000
drive-in theaters across the country. These outdoor cinemas became a symbol of American culture, offering a unique movie-going
experience for families and couples.
Drive-ins were known for their large screens, playgrounds for children, and concession stands that served classic movie snacks like
popcorn and soda. They provided a sense of community, as families and friends would gather together to enjoy a movie under the stars.
However, with the advent of home entertainment systems, multiplex cinemas, and changing consumer habits, the popularity of drive-in
theaters began to decline. Many drive-ins were forced to close down or convert their spaces for other purposes.
Despite their decline, drive-in theaters still hold a special place in the hearts of many Americans. They represent a nostalgic era of
American cinema and continue to attract a loyal fan base. Some drive-ins have even managed to adapt to the changing times by
embracing new technologies and diversifying their offerings.
While the number of drive-in theaters in the United States has signicantly decreased over the years, their impact on American culture
and the movie industry remains signicant. They will always be remembered as a unique and cherished part of the country's
entertainment history.
Here’s hoping future generations will get to experience what past generations did when it comes to watching movies at the drive-in.
The history is amazing, and should be studied even more, because without them many of our ancestors never would’ve gotten their rst
kiss, or maybe even to second base or falling in love gotten married who knows for at one point the drive-in was essentially the most
