This Victorian print, captioned The Dawn
of Heavenly Light depicts Maude Millett,
the most frequently photographed
actress at one point in her career. Her
face would have been familiar to many in
the Anglo world of the late 19th century.
As a young woman, Helen and her first
husband Johannes Pienaar were heavily
involved in the theatre. Wena Naudé, a
household name in Afrikaans theatrical
circles, was Helen’s cousin.
