Positive Work Culture
[NEW]
Why wouldn’t we work to create a workplace that people
love, that they develop within, that they want to contribute
to because they actually WANT to? A huge part of a positive
workplace culture is learning how to get results and become
successful. And, while doing those high value things, to also
build a nature and a way of working that allows for people to
contribute, nurture development, feel supported with healthy
accountability and more. We all must become more intentional
about the how, what and why within our culture. We can attract
and retain great individuals that do much more than “show
up for work.” We can create places where people feel proud of
the place they contribute to and also, feel proud of themselves
Calvin Johnson inspects one of the Amatrol
Motor Control Systems used by students in the
Industrial Maintenance program to gain handson
experience before entering the workforce.
GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT
Calvin Johnson finds new focus and purpose
through Industrial Maintenance program
In 2010, Calvin Johnson left his home in
Lexington, Mississippi, and headed north,
looking for new opportunities. Family
connections brought him to Waterloo, Iowa.
“My uncle worked for John Deere,”
Johnson said. “He was at John Deere for 30-
plus years before he retired.”
Before coming to Iowa, Johnson worked
as a groundskeeper. His father worked in
maintenance, and Johnson can remember
following him around on the job and
sometimes helping out.
“That’s what made me want to follow in his
footsteps,” he said.
Johnson first connected with Hawkeye’s
Workforce Training and Community
Development department where he was
able to access services from the GAP and
Hawkeye Employment Network programs.
These programs provided him with support
and resources to not just find a new job, but
to develop a new career at no cost to him.
After a consultation with a career pathway
navigator he decided to enroll in the
Industrial Maintenance program.
While Johnson had some previous training
as a welder, he wasn’t experienced in the
electrical side of maintenance. The program
gave him knowledge and hands-on practice
with hydraulic and pneumatic fluid power,
programmable logic controllers, single- and
three-phase motor controls, and more.
Now a graduate of the Industrial
Maintenance program, Johnson feels an
immense sense of pride. His family is proud
of him, too, and together, they are excited
about where his new career path will take
him. His advice to others looking for a new
direction: Never give up.
“Pay attention, be a leader, and never be
afraid to ask questions,” he said. “Just be
the best you can be.”
