This is a 300-hour course on floor covering installation.<br />

Students will receive a basic floor covering introduction, along<br />

with learning skills on estimating, measuring, floor prep, and<br />

Fundamentals of Crew Leadership<br />

Fundamentals of Crew Leadership is designed to support<br />

leadership training for front-line construction leaders, such as<br />

crew leaders and foreman, to ensure their crews contribute<br />

safely and productively to active projects. We will cover<br />

National Center for Construction <strong>Education</strong> and Research<br />

(NCCER) Fundamentals of Crew Leadership curriculum which<br />

provides training on the effective leadership skills and practical<br />

leadership applications, such as scheduling, workforce<br />

planning, field reporting, and resource control. It also introduces<br />

learners to critical modern leadership skills, such as managing<br />

diverse crews, addressing performance issues, and resolving<br />

conflict. Students will also spend time in our Introduction to<br />

Construction Trades class practicing leadership and oversight to<br />

Introduction to Construction Trades<br />

This program is offered in partnership with WE Build Waterloo<br />

(Hawkeye Community College and Iowa Heartland Habitat<br />

for Humanity). The program generally prepares sponsored<br />

students to apply technical knowledge and skills in the<br />

building, inspecting, and maintaining of structures and<br />

related properties. Key content includes: Basic Safety, OSHA<br />

10, Introduction to Construction Math, Introduction to Hand<br />

Tools, Introduction to Power Tools, Construction Drawings,<br />

Basic Rigging (elective), Basic Communication Skills, Basic<br />

Employability Skills, and Introduction to Materials Handling.<br />

Completing this curriculum gives the trainee the basic skills<br />

needed to continue education in any construction craft area he<br />

or she chooses. This course is recognized as a carpentry preapprenticeship<br />

included. Students will learn techniques and processes to weld<br />

carbon steel in the flat, horizontal and vertical positions and<br />

will be able to fabricate a weldment from a blueprint to industry<br />

CDL Hazardous Materials Training :<br />

This online class is for anyone who handles hazmat is required<br />

by the regulations to have up-to-date training. If you are a CDL<br />

holder and would like to obtain the Hazmat endorsement,<br />

this class is for you. This class is ELDT certified. We will walk<br />

you through the critical information hazmat drivers must<br />

know. This class will include Hazard Classification (Classes<br />

and Divisions), Hazardous Materials Table, Shipping Papers,<br />

Marking and Placards, Loading and Segregation, Transportation<br />

Safety Awareness. This class will also walk you through the<br />

requirements you will need to go through. Upon completion,<br />

Program provides financial assistance for<br />

qualified veterans, service members, and their<br />

commercial driver’s license (CDL A).<br />

Our goal is to assist current and former members<br />

of the U.S. Armed Forces and their spouses and<br />

children to earn their CDL A and transition into<br />

the transportation industry while building a<br />

skilled workforce to meet the driver shortage.<br />

Class A Commercial Driver’s License Certificate<br />

(CDL)<br />

Looking to start a career in one of the fastest growing<br />

occupations? Hawkeye’s Class A Commercial Driver’s License<br />

(CDL) training program is designed for adults who would like<br />

to train for a high-demand career in a short-term time frame.<br />

We train on 10-speed manual and automatic transmissions.<br />

The program focuses on developing safe driving skills including<br />

backing, turning, and driving on rural and suburban roads. You<br />

will receive hands-on training using full-size semi-tractor/trailers<br />

and virtual driving simulators. You must become proficient in<br />

every skill before testing. As soon as proficiency tasks are met<br />

two times without instruction, you may test. You have up to six<br />

weeks to become proficient. Upon being proficient, you will take<br />

your DOT vehicle inspection, skills, and driving tests at Hawkeye<br />

to obtain your Class A CDL. You will receive daily training on your<br />

schedule, choose your times: morning 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.,<br />

and/or afternoon 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and/or evening 5:00 p.m.<br />

to 9:00 p.m. Graduates can find employment in a variety of areas<br />

including, but not limited to, a truck driver, spotter, shag driver,<br />

and many more. You must obtain your Commercial Learner<br />

Permit (CLP) prior to class and register with the FMCSA Drug and<br />

Alcohol Clearinghouse at www.clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov.<br />

Do you currently hold a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s<br />

License (CDL) and want to get back into truck driving? Bring<br />

your skills back up to speed with this 40-hour, individualized,<br />

refresher course. This refresher will focus on the skills you need<br />

to improve and get back on the road such as backing, turning,<br />

shifting, maneuvering, and inspections. You’ll begin your handson<br />

refresher using our driving simulators before you take your<br />

skills to a full size semi or dump truck. Must hold a valid Class A<br />

or B (CDL) on first day of class.<br />

This two-week Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)<br />

training program is a proficiency-based program so you progress<br />

through the program as you master the content. This program<br />

will teach you how to operate trucks that require a Class B CDL<br />

license, such as concrete mixer trucks, snow plows, garbage<br />

trucks, and buses. You will develop skills in backing, turning,<br />

and safe driving on both rural and suburban roads and become<br />

proficient in vehicle inspections. Your training will include<br />

individual and classroom instruction and hands-on driving using<br />

simulators and full-size dump trucks. We have implemented<br />

Entry Level Driver Training. You must become proficient in every<br />

skill before testing. Proficient is completion of a task two times<br />

without instruction. Upon completion, you will take your vehicle<br />

inspections, skills, and driving tests at Hawkeye to obtain your<br />

School or Passenger Bus License<br />

Advanced school bus training will enhance your driving skills<br />

to the next level. Whether you are looking for a new occupation<br />

or want to experience the great feeling of helping people get to<br />

their desired destinations, this course is for you. Using an actual<br />

school bus and driving simulators you will obtain the skills to<br />

drive a bus in all types of situations. During this course you will<br />

learn to drive a school bus in many rural and urban situations.<br />

You will learn to maneuver, the school bus around corners, over<br />

railroad tracks, through backing exercises, and many other<br />

real-life experiences that occur while driving. You will complete<br />

this class with the confidence of driving a full-length bus with<br />

hands-on experiences under the direction of experienced bus<br />

drivers. Class will conclude with the confidence to pass DOT<br />

tests and obtain a bus driving position. This course is much<br />

more than your average training. You will actually be driving in a<br />

variety of “real life situations.” Note: You must have your school<br />

bus permit which will allow you to drive on the roadway, as well<br />

as your school bus and passenger DOT written tests.<br />

Hawkeye’s High School Driver <strong>Education</strong> Program is designed<br />

to help the beginner driver develop the knowledge, skills<br />

and attitude necessary to become a safe, responsible driver.<br />

Hawkeye Community College provides 30 hours of classroom<br />

instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. This<br />

program meets the requirements of the Iowa Department of<br />

Transportation (DOT) and Motor Vehicles Division (DMV) for<br />

individuals to obtain a graduated driver’s license (GDL). The<br />

student will be required to be proficient in their driving at the<br />

end of our course or will be required to drive with the DOT to<br />

get their license. Students must have the ability to schedule<br />

after-school and week-end driving times, and they must bring<br />

their permit to every class. The student must have a minimum<br />

of 10 hours of driving time before the class begins. Attendance<br />

is required for ALL sessions. No exceptions. Students must have<br />

an Iowa driver’s permit before enrolling. Fee can be waived or<br />

reduced for students who qualify in the Waterloo Community<br />

School District. Mandatory Zoom Orientation will be held for<br />

parent/legal guardian and student and notification of day and<br />

time will be sent after registration is completion.<br />

Do you like playing in the dirt and running equipment? If you<br />

do, this class is for you. Our Construction Equipment Operator<br />

I Program will train you to become an entry-level equipment<br />

operator. You will receive training in safely operating various<br />

types of equipment used for earth and materials moving, by<br />

the construction industry. Includes hands-on operation of<br />

equipment such as, skid steer loaders, large wheel loaders, allterrain<br />

fork lift, off-road dump trucks, and scrapers. There will be<br />

courses on blueprint reading, site preparation, and equipment<br />

maintenance.<br />

This course covers all the training topics miners need to get<br />

started working in both surface, surface of an underground and<br />

underground. Upon completion the participant will receive<br />

a 5000-23 certificate for all parts of the training. Training is<br />

provided by an experienced blue card certified instructor.<br />

On-site training at an underground mine will also be provided.<br />

Adult CPR, AED and first-aid are also components of the training.<br />

The training is eligible for Construction Industry Training Funds<br />

through Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT). Payment is<br />

to be made to Hawkeye Community College and then you will<br />

be reimbursed from the IDOT. Do not forget to request the funds<br />

prior to the class. Lunch is provided.<br />

MSHA New Miner Part 46 and 48b<br />

MSHA Part 46 and 48b regulations require that new miners<br />

complete a minimum of 24 hours of training within their first 90<br />

days of employment. Eight hours of which must be completed<br />

prior to beginning work at the mine. The new miner training<br />

offers eight hours of training that was created to meet the<br />

training subject requirements in 30 CFR 46.5 and 48b plus an<br />

additional 16 hours of task specific supplemental training.<br />

Upon completion of the course the miner will receive a 5000-23<br />

certificate. Training is provided by an experienced blue card<br />

holder. This is everything you need to get you on the job safely<br />

whether you are a surface miner or surface miner contractor.<br />

The training is eligible for Construction Industry Training Funds<br />

from the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT). Payment<br />

is to be made to Hawkeye Community College and then you will<br />

be reimbursed from the IDOT. Do not forget to request the funds<br />

prior to the class. Lunch is included<br />

Course fulfills annual training requirements for anyone working<br />

at a mine. Upon completion of the course, participants will<br />

receive an MSHA Form 5000-23 certifying that they have<br />

completed 8 hours of annual refresher training. The training is<br />

eligible for Construction Industry Training Funds through Iowa<br />

Motorcycle: Basic Rider Course<br />

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course<br />

is a learn-to-ride education and training safety program that<br />

consists of the online MSF Basic eCourse to address basic<br />

motorcycle knowledge, five hours of classroom instruction with<br />

a RiderCoach to address rider perception and risk management,<br />

and 10 hours of on-cycle, hands-on instruction. Motorcycles<br />

are provided for use during the course. Prior to the first day of<br />

class you will need to read the Rider Handbook and complete<br />

the eCourse online. Price of the eCourse is included and student<br />

will receive an email two weeks before the class start date with<br />

a redemption code. Riders must be able to balance a bicycle to<br />

participate in the riding portion of the course and successfully<br />

complete a riding skills test. This course does have a written<br />

and a riding skills test. Successful completion of BOTH tests is<br />

required to receive a DOT certificate of completion. A course<br />

completion card may provide an insurance discount. This course<br />

is required by Iowa law to obtain a motorcycle operator’s license<br />

for all residents under the age of 18. If you are a minor, you must<br />

have a valid driver’s permit and you must have written consent<br />

from your parent or guardian at time of registration. If under<br />

age of 18, registrations are done in person at Hawkeye’s Cedar<br />

Calvin Johnson finds new focus and purpose<br />

through Industrial Maintenance program<br />

In 2010, Calvin Johnson left his home in<br />

Lexington, Mississippi, and headed north,<br />

looking for new opportunities. Family<br />

connections brought him to Waterloo, Iowa.<br />

“My uncle worked for John Deere,”<br />

Johnson said. “He was at John Deere for 30-<br />

plus years before he retired.”<br />

Before coming to Iowa, Johnson worked<br />

as a groundskeeper. His father worked in<br />

maintenance, and Johnson can remember<br />

following him around on the job and<br />

sometimes helping out.<br />

“That’s what made me want to follow in his<br />

footsteps,” he said.<br />

Johnson first connected with Hawkeye’s<br />

Workforce Training and Community<br />

Development department where he was<br />

able to access services from the GAP and<br />

Hawkeye Employment Network programs.<br />

These programs provided him with support<br />

and resources to not just find a new job, but<br />

to develop a new career at no cost to him.<br />

After a consultation with a career pathway<br />

navigator he decided to enroll in the<br />

Industrial Maintenance program.<br />

While Johnson had some previous training<br />

as a welder, he wasn’t experienced in the<br />

electrical side of maintenance. The program<br />

gave him knowledge and hands-on practice<br />

with hydraulic and pneumatic fluid power,<br />

programmable logic controllers, single- and<br />

three-phase motor controls, and more.<br />

Now a graduate of the Industrial<br />

Maintenance program, Johnson feels an<br />

immense sense of pride. His family is proud<br />

of him, too, and together, they are excited<br />

about where his new career path will take<br />

him. His advice to others looking for a new<br />

direction: Never give up.<br />

“Pay attention, be a leader, and never be<br />

afraid to ask questions,” he said. “Just be<br />

the best you can be.”<br />

This course will cover the requirements for The Recreational<br />

UAS Safety Test (TRUST) for recreational drone pilots and the<br />

fly near an airport. Commercial drone pilots must know how to<br />

HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION<br />

Office Hours<br />

The Business and Community <strong>Education</strong> office is located at the Cedar Falls<br />

Center, 5330 Nordic Drive, Cedar Falls. The office is open from 8:00 a.m. to<br />

4:30 p.m.<br />

Enrollment<br />

Pre-registration required. Register through Hawkeye Business and<br />

Community <strong>Education</strong> prior to class start. Payment is required at the time<br />

of registration.Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You are<br />

officially enrolled once we receive your completed registration form and<br />

payment. Please register early!<br />

Children in Class<br />

Children are not allowed in class, unless noted in the class description or<br />

the class is designed for children (ex. kid’s camp).<br />

Evaluation Forms<br />

We value and encourage your input at any time. Evaluations are<br />

distributed at the end of the class.<br />

Refunds<br />

Refunds will be issued to learners who withdraw at least two business<br />

days prior to class start date, however, there are class exceptions. Please<br />

review your class confirmation for the refund policy specific to your class.<br />

The High School Completion Program offers standards-based<br />

instruction to prepare students for a High School Equivalency<br />

diploma and to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, and<br />

mathematics. In addition, digital literacy, financial literacy, and<br />

transition to college assistance are components of the program.<br />

Punctual and regular attendance is necessary for success.<br />

Students have the option of attending all classes remotely.<br />

The High School Completion Program offers three pathways to<br />

earn a High School Equivalency Diploma. Students can enroll in<br />

the HiSET pathway, the High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED)<br />

by Credit pathway, or the HSED by Foreign Postsecondary degree<br />

THREE EASY WAYS TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES<br />

Adult Language<br />

English language instruction assists individuals of limited English<br />

proficiency to learn the English language. Students are required<br />

to register and take an entry assessment to determine the<br />

appropriate class level. ELL classes are available in seven different<br />

levels. Classes meet at the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center, 120<br />

Jefferson Street, Waterloo.<br />

Punctual and regular attendance is absolutely necessary for<br />

success. Students, please be on time and attend class every day!<br />

Driver License (CDL) IET, Hospitality Management I-BEST,<br />

Computer Technology Skills (IET), and Basic Construction Skills<br />

IELCE (ELL only). We also offer Computer Numerical Control (CNC)<br />

I-BEST, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) I-BEST, and Child Health,<br />

Safety, and Nutrition (IELCE). Register for ELL or HSC to qualify.<br />

FAMILY LITERACY – FREE<br />

Parents enrolled in Hawkeye’s High School Completion Program<br />

or English Language Learning Program with a child 18 or younger<br />

living at home may register for the Family Literacy Program<br />

(FLP). The FLP provides programming for parents who seek to<br />

strengthen their role as their child’s first teacher as well as free<br />

children’s books and materials. The program also provides oneon-one<br />

assistance to parents interested in transferring to college<br />
