Cedar Valley Construction Exploration Camp 

This summer camp is designed to introduce high school 

students with a minimum age of 14 years old at the start of the 

camp to careers within the construction industry. Camp will 

include class time which includes but not limited to precision 

measurements, professionalism, and safety. Campers will 

complete hands on projects. This years project is making a 

set of bags boards (also knowns as cornhole, bag toss, bags, 

etc.). We will also visit construction sites, meet with industry 

professionals from multiple different construction trades. All 

attendees must attend a one-hour orientation via Zoom on June 

4th at 6:00 PM. The Zoom link will be provided by the instructor.

for Humanity). The program generally prepares sponsored 

students to apply technical knowledge and skills in the 

building, inspecting, and maintaining of structures and related 

properties. Key content includes: Basic Safety, Introduction to 

Construction Math, Introduction to Hand Tools, Introduction to 

Power Tools, Construction Drawings, Basic Rigging (elective), 

Basic Communication Skills, Basic Employability Skills, and 

Introduction to Materials Handling. Completing this curriculum 

gives the trainee the basic skills needed to continue education

We train on 10 speeds and automatics. The program focuses on 

developing safe driving skills including backing, turning, and 

driving on rural and suburban roads. You will receive handson 

training using full-size semi-tractor/trailers and virtual 

driving simulators. You must become proficient in every skill 

before testing. As soon as proficiency tasks are met 2 times 

without instruction, you may test. You have up to 6 weeks to 

become proficient. Upon being proficient, you will take your 

DOT vehicle inspection, skills, and driving tests at Hawkeye to 

obtain your Class A CDL. You will receive daily training on your 

schedule, choose your times: morning 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., 

and/or afternoon 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and/or evening 5:00 

p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Graduates can find employment in a variety of 

areas including, but not limited to, a truck driver, spotter, shag 

driver, and many more. You must have your Commercial Learner 

Permit and register with FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse

Class A/B CDL Refresher 

Do you currently hold a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s 

License (CDL) and want to get back into truck driving? Bring 

your skills back up to speed with this 40-hour, individualized, 

refresher course. This refresher will focus on the skills you need 

to improve and get back on the road such as backing, turning, 

shifting, maneuvering, and inspections. You’ll begin your handson 

refresher using our driving simulators before you take your

This two-week Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) 

training program is a proficiency-based program so you progress 

through the program as you master the content. This program 

will teach you how to operate trucks that require a Class B CDL 

license, such as concrete mixer trucks, snow plows, garbage 

trucks, and buses. You will develop skills in backing, turning, 

and safe driving on both rural and suburban roads and become

Advanced Driving Training (Skid Monster) 

By the time you leave this class, you will have improved your 

driving abilities, have a greater understanding of vehicle 

handling, and gain the experience to prevent, detect, and 

correct loss of vehicle traction. Even veteran drivers find this 

defensive driving course gives them the skills to handle a vehicle 

in adverse conditions like hydroplaning or hitting a patch of 

black ice. You learn to drive in all types of road conditions using 

the Skid Monster, a specially equipped vehicle that simulates 

adverse driving conditions at highway road speeds up to 60 

mph. Law enforcement and other public safety personnel use 

the same simulators in car handling trainings. Note: You must

Driver’s Education 

Hawkeye’s High School Driver Education Program is designed 

to help the beginner driver develop the knowledge, skill 

and attitude necessary to become a safe, responsible driver. 

Hawkeye Community College provides 30 hours of classroom 

instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. This 

program meets the requirements of the Iowa Department of 

Transportation (DOT) and Motor Vehicles Division (DMV) for 

individuals to obtain a graduated driver’s license (GDL). The 

student will be required to be proficient in their driving at the 

end of our course or will be required to drive with the DOT to 

get their license. Students must have the ability to schedule 

after-school and week-end driving times, and they must bring 

their permit to every class. The student must have a minimum 

of 10 hours of driving time before the class begins. Attendance 

is required for ALL sessions. No exceptions. Students must have 

an Iowa driver’s permit before enrolling. Fee can be waived or 

reduced for students who qualify in the Waterloo Community 

School District. Mandatory Zoom Orientation will be held for 

parent/legal guardian and student, notification of day and time

Motorcycle: Basic Rider Course 

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course 

is a learn-to-ride education and training safety program that 

consists of the online MSF Basic eCourse to address basic 

motorcycle knowledge, five hours of classroom instruction with 

a RiderCoach to address rider perception and risk management, 

and 10 hours of on-cycle, hands-on instruction. Motorcycles 

are provided for use during the course. Prior to the first day of 

class you will need to read the Rider Handbook and complete 

the eCourse online. Price of the eCourse is included and student 

will receive an email two weeks before the class start date with 

a redemption code. Riders must be able to balance a bicycle to 

participate in the riding portion of the course and successfully 

complete a riding skills test. This course does have a written 

and a riding skills test. Successful completion of BOTH tests is 

required to receive a DOT certificate of completion. A course 

completion card may provide an insurance discount. This course

Motorcycle: Returning Rider Course 

Refresh your riding skills with this course that combines the 

elements of the Basic Rider Course in one day. This program 

consists of the online MSF Basic eCourse to address basic 

motorcycle knowledge, with a 1 day hands -on instruction. Prior 

to class you will need to complete the e-Course online and print 

a completion certificate. Bring your eCourse certificate, full 

finger gloves, long sleeve shirt or jacket, long pants, and sturdy

April Gohring, CPhT, CHW has 

a career that she never thought 

was possible! 

Growing up, April thought being a 

Pharmacy Technician looked like a fun job 

and medication had always piqued her 

interest. 

When April enrolled in the Pharmacy 

Technician program in 2019, she was 

enrolled in Family Investment Program (FIP) 

at the time. “Through them, I was offered 

a chance to take the course for free to set 

myself up for a career,” she said 

With the training April received she felt 

prepared for her role as a Pharmacy 

Technician, mentioning the most useful part 

was learning conversions between different 

measurements (Imperial to metric) and the 

brand/generic names of medications. 

“I had more knowledge starting out than 

most employees had. I even knew some 

facts that some pharmacists did not know!” 

April commented that she loves her job and 

one of the best things about it is helping 

customers beyond just filling prescriptions. 

She feels confident in her career choice and

Prepare to Care: Health Support 

Professional 

Prepare to Care is Iowa’s comprehensive Direct Care and 

Support Curriculum. Students will be prepared for certification 

as a Prepare to Care Health Support Professional, and 

certification as a Nurse’s Aide. Students will learn to support the 

basic needs of the person served and provide the care needed 

to maintain health and support specific conditions. Instructors 

have certification in the curriculum which includes training in 

adult learning. Methods are used to create an engaging and

Certified Professional Medical Coder : 

This intensive American Association of Professional Coders 

(AAPC) Medical Coding Training Course will teach the students 

the fundamentals of medical coding skills for physician-based 

coding and prepares the student to take AAPC’s CPC Exam. 

The course covers CPT, HCPCS and ICD-10-CM coding as they 

apply to these healthcare settings. A minimum of 80 hours 

of coding instruction will be provided by a certified AAPC 

instructor. All textbooks/e-books, an AAPC student membership, 

practice exam, CPC Certification Exam, and a Practicode CPC-A 

Practicum are included in this course. This intensive fast pace 

program leads to CPC certification in the medical coding field. 

As a prerequisite to participate in the coding instruction in the 

course, all students will be given access to the AAPC Medical 

Terminology (40-hours) & AAPC Anatomy (40-hours) online 

modules on 07/18/2024. Both online modules must successfully

IV Therapy for the LPN [HYBRID] 

This course prepares the LPN to perform procedures related 

to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy in a licensed 

hospital, licensed skilled nursing facility, and a certified endstage 

renal dialysis unit. Major emphasis is placed on the 

specialized skills needed to provide IV therapy for clients age 

12 or older and weighing 80 pounds or more. The textbook is 

included in the course fee. To be eligible to enroll in the course, 

the licensed practical nurse shall hold a current unrestricted 

Iowa license to practice as a licensed practical nurse and 

documentation of 1040 hours of practice as a licensed practical 

nurse; be practicing in a licensed hospital, a nursing facility or 

a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit whose policies allow 

the licensed practical nurse to perform procedures related to 

the expanded scope of intravenous therapy. This course is in a 

hybrid format. The asynchronous online course. The laboratory 

simulation will be in person on 06/28/2024 from 9:00am to

HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION 

Office Hours 

The Business and Community Education office is located at the Cedar Falls 

Center, 5330 Nordic Drive, Cedar Falls. The office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 

4:30 p.m. 

Enrollment 

Pre-registration required. Register through Hawkeye Business and 

Community Education prior to class start. Payment is required at the time 

of registration.Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You are 

officially enrolled once we receive your completed registration form and 

payment. Please register early! 

Children in Class 

Children are not allowed in class, unless noted in the class description or 

the class is designed for children (ex. kid’s camp). 

Evaluation Forms 

We value and encourage your input at any time. Evaluations are 

distributed at the end of the class. 

Refunds 

Refunds will be issued to learners who withdraw at least two business 

days prior to class start date, however, there are class exceptions. Please 

review your class confirmation for the refund policy specific to your class. 

The High School Completion Program offers standards-based 

instruction to prepare students for a High School Equivalency 

diploma and to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, and 

mathematics. In addition, digital literacy, financial literacy, and 

transition to college assistance are components of the program. 

Punctual and regular attendance is necessary for success. 

Students have the option of attending all classes remotely. 

The High School Completion Program offers three pathways to 

earn a High School Equivalency Diploma. Students can enroll in 

the HiSET pathway, the High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) 

by Credit pathway, or the HSED by Foreign Postsecondary degree

High School Completion students must:

• attend a two-hour orientation

Technical Program Policies 

Applying Credits to a Technical Program at Hawkeye 

If it is determined that the course(s) taken are similar in course content 

to a required course in one of Hawkeye’s technical programs, a copy of 

your transcript will be submitted to the respective Hawkeye academic 

department for evaluation. It is the department’s discretion to accept or 

not accept the credit for the program.

HSED by Credit pathway: 

Independent Online Courses: 5 hours minimum /week 

High School Equivalency (HiSET) Testing – $15.00 per test 

Testing is by appointment four times per week at the 

Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center for those who qualify. 

HSED by Credit pathway - $75.00 annual courseware fee

Student Conduct 

Hawkeye Community College students are expected to obey federal, state 

and local laws and regulations; show respect for properly constituted 

authority; and exhibit and maintain integrity and honor in all matters 

related to Hawkeye. Student behavior which, after due process, is found to 

be disruptive to classes, which interferes with the rights of others or which 

damages property, may result in probation or suspension from Hawkeye. 

Each student shall be expected to behave in a mature, adult manner. At 

all times, the rights of all students and Hawkeye personnel must be the 

primary consideration. 



ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING (ELL) 

THREE EASY WAYS TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES 

Adult Language 

English language instruction assists individuals of limited English 

proficiency to learn the English language. Students are required 

to register and take an entry assessment to determine the 

appropriate class level. ELL classes are available in seven different 

levels. Classes meet at the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center, 120 

Jefferson Street, Waterloo. 

Punctual and regular attendance is absolutely necessary for 

success. Students, please be on time and attend class every day! 

Students have the option of attending classes remotely.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING CLASS – FREE 

English Language Learning students must: 

• complete the registration application 

• schedule a time for a free, three-hour assessment 

• take an assessment before beginning class 

• attend class during the first week 

• pay a $33 textbook fee the first week of class 

Assessment (3 hours) 

Appointments will be made at registration (students must register 

and complete an assessment before they will be enrolled in class). 

Due to high demand for classes, students may be put on a waiting list.

INTEGRATED EDUCATION AND TRAINING 

Students who are enrolled in the English Language Learning (ELL) 

or High School Completion (HSC) programs at the Adult Learning 

Center who have qualifying test scores can apply to take a free 

Integrated Education and Training (IET) class. We offer Commercial 

Driver License (CDL) IET, Hospitality Management I-BEST, 

Computer Technology Skills (IET), and Basic Construction Skills 

IELCE (ELL only). We also offer Computer Numerical Control (CNC) 

I-BEST, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) I-BEST, and Child Health, 

Safety, and Nutrition (IELCE). Register for ELL or HSC to qualify. 

FAMILY LITERACY – FREE 

Parents enrolled in Hawkeye’s High School Completion Program 

or English Language Learning Program with a child 18 or younger 

living at home may register for the Family Literacy Program 

(FLP). The FLP provides programming for parents who seek to 

strengthen their role as their child’s first teacher as well as free 

children’s books and materials. The program also provides oneon-one 

assistance to parents interested in transferring to college

Hawkeye Bookstore operates on the main

have an opportunity to purchase books the

CLASS CANCELLATIONS 

Courses and workshops are subject to 

cancellation if the minimum enrollment isn’t 

attained. In such cases, you’ll receive a full 

refund and be notified by email or phone. 

Avoid showing up for a cancelled class 

by preregistering.

Classes may be canceled due to severe 

weather, emergency, or maintenance 

situations. Announcements are made over
