begins with a dream, and
young ballerina Tamison
Soppet is one step closer to
realising hers after accepting
scholarships from three
international dance schools.
The 13-year-old Te Kura
correspondence school student
will head to the Royal Ballet
School in London, John Cranko
Ballet in Germany, and Princess
Grace Dance Academy in
Monaco next year after being
offered scholarships to attend
each for up to four weeks.
Said mum Toni Soppet: “She
is very excited to be going out
into the big wide world; she’s
nervous but grounded.
“We have the opportunity
to first go to New York for the
Youth Grand Prix ballet finals
and, in July, Tamison would
like to go to a summer school in
Winnipeg on a scholarship she
was offered last year.
“Then, we will come home for
a bit before leaving to go to each
of the schools in Europe.”
Tamison, a Convergence
Dance Studios student, was also
offered a fourth scholarship to
the Australian Ballet School in
Melbourne, which Soppet said
was “not being ruled out”.

“Every contribution, no matter
the size, would get her closer
to her dreams,” said Soppet.
The decision comes after
Tamison was recruited at the
Youth America Grand Prix ballet
competition, held in Sydney
in September, after competing
against more than 200 dancers
aged 12-14.
Tamison was called back for
further judging after three days
of performing and attending
both classical and contemporary
masterclasses, where
the junior grand prix title was
officially awarded to her by consensus
of a four-judge panel.
Said Soppet: “Though
winning competitions is
amazing, making people
feel something through her
dancing is the real triumph and
something Tamison strives for.”

Christmas

A VISION for two campuses
is about to become reality for
Pūtahi Belfast School.
When the doors open to its
new senior campus in January,
the school will be based on two
sites in Belfast, with years 1 to 4
at the original site of 700 Main
North Rd, and years 5 to 8 at the
new site of 1B Treedale St.
The sites are not two separate
schools, but rather co-locations
and will still operate under one
principal and one board.
Principal Sue Elley said: “We
are excited by the new opportunities
our two-site model
will provide for our tamariki,
whānau and staff.
“Our vision ‘navigating a successful
future together’ will be
enhanced by amazing spaces and
new resources that will enable
our tamariki to thrive and grow.
“We are looking forward to
growing our partnership with
our neighbours, Pītau-Allenvale
School.”
Despite the location changes,
plenty will remain the same. The
uniform will not change, both
junior and senior students will
continue collaborating, and year
7 and 8 students from Pūtahi
Belfast will continue attending
Breens Intermediate for their
technology education.

testing unit

THE ROTARY Club of Papanui
is fundraising for a mobile eye
testing unit for the South Island
by running a raffle at Northlands
Mall.
The cost of the mobile eye unit
project, which was launched
by Rotary District 9999 with
Blind Low Vision NZ, sits at the
$400,000 mark.
Said Rotary public image coordinator
for New Zealand and the
Pacific Liz Courtney: “The mobile
van will cost $180,000.
“Then it will need to be customised
to fit in the specialist equipment,
which will cost another
$200,000.”
Said Blind Low Vision chief
executive John Mulka: “Early
detection and screening are key
to prevent vision loss, so the aim
is to have the mobile unit on the
road by mid-2024 to offer rural
communities free eye health
checks.”
To date, rotary clubs have raised
$50,0000 towards the project.
The Papanui raffle will finish
at the end of November, with the
winner being drawn on December
2. First prize is a trailer full of
household items, worth $9000.

From near-$1m price bump to $10k
loss: Cone home feels resale pain

A CLEVERLY renovated midcentury
cone-shaped home that
was given an award-winning
makeover to bring it into the 21st
century has sold for the second
time in just over a year, but for
slightly less.
The 1970s home at Westburn
Tce, in Ilam, sold for $1.3 million
– $10,000 less than the previous
owners picked it up for at auction
in September last year.
The property was put back
on the market at the end of
September due to a change in
circumstances.
The three-bedroom, two-bathroom
home passed in at auction
in mid-October but sold a few
weeks later at a fixed price.
Harcourts Gold listing agent
Cameron Bailey, who marketed
the home for the second time
with Charlie Horncastle, said
it was a good price and showed
that good properties in good
locations still hold their value.
Bailey, who had earlier
described it as an “uber cool”
home, said a mix of buyers had
been looking at the property including
families, executives and
downsizers. He could not reveal
who the new owners were.
The property underwent a
sympathetic 14-month renovation
by the previous owner,
Angelique Armstrong, a wellknown
Christchurch interior
designer.
Armstrong picked up the
home for $461,000 in 2017 for
herself, and her hard work
scored the home an award for
the best renovation project in
the 2021 TIDA NZ Renovation
of the Year Awards as well as a
near-$1m price bump when she
sold last year.
It comes as family homes in
Ilam continue to net surprising
prices at auction.
A three-bedroom, onebathroom
home on an
impressive 1315sq m section, also
on Westburn Tce, sold under
the hammer for $1.46m earlier
this month with five people
competing for it.
Bailey, who sold the home with
colleague Catherine Aitken,
said the recently renovated home
on a large section was bought by
a family.

“It’s just one of those areas
where you are getting great value
for money. You are getting a
location that is still really close
to town, it’s got some cool houses
in there – there’s a mixture of
character houses and some midcentury
houses.”

agent Andrew Steel also sold a
four-bedroom, two-bathroom
brick home in Ilam that netted
the owners $252,000 more than
they had expected.
The Coniston Ave home
attracted plenty of attention as
soon as it hit the market and
within days the owners accepted
an offer of $950,000, bringing the
auction forward. There were six
bidders in the auction room last
week and the property eventually
sold under the hammer for
$1.202m.

good areas tended to always be
in demand and that people
liked Ilam because it was close to

‘Modest’ hybrid system leaves GX lacking
One of the first Japanese station
wagons sold in this country when
launched in 1966; fast forward
to 2023 and now the Corolla is
among the last.
Traditional body styles such
as wagons have been obliterated
here over the last decade, by
the seemingly never-ending
obsession Kiwi new-car buyers
have with SUVs, and these days
they are bombarded with choice.
For almost a year, the trimmed
down Corolla lineup sold here
including the wagon, were all
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
powered by Toyota’s popular
hybrid-petrol electric power
train. The ‘go all hybrid’ is being
driven on two fronts; one is
buyer demand, with the other
being Toyota’s push to reduce
the carbon footprint of their new
vehicle sales in New Zealand.
There’s a likeable sophistication
about the styling of this hybrid
Corolla wagon with the lower
grille showcasing its extra width
and LED headlights that wrap
around and delicately blend
into the front guards. Only
one model, the $36,995
Japanese-built entry-level
GX being road tested
here, is available on our
market.
Recently it received a
useful and long overdue
power bump from
90kW to 103kW. It is
now smoother and more
refined than the hybrid
system it replaces, but a fair
chunk of this goes out the door
under full throttle. The newfound
heft is most noticeable
in town driving, where the test
wagon coasted for longer periods
on flat terrain in EV mode only
at speeds of up to 50km/h.
Its star doesn’t shine so
brightly on the open road where
acceleration for overtaking
slower traffic is on the leisurely
side. Engaging the transmission’s
Sport mode puts a bit more
spring in its performance step in
these situations, but only does,
if you will excuse the pun, a
passable job. I could only wonder
how good this wagon would be
with the excellent 135kW 2.0-litre
petrol electric hybrid system
used in the Corolla Cross SUV.
People in the UK would know, as
it’s used in the high spec Corolla
touring wagon sold in that part
of the world.
The 1.8-litre hybrid system
used in the GX that’s the subject
of this review features in more
modestly equipped Corolla
wagons Toyota serves up to
the Brits. The 2.0-litre hybrid
offers a much larger dollop

/100km; Safety – ANCAP not rated.
Overall points out of 10: 7
of performance, enabling it
to charge through the 0 to
100km/h dash in 7.5 seconds.
That’s about 3 seconds quicker
than the 1.8-litre hybrid. A CVT
automatic provides a consistently
seamless and pleasant – but far
from gear shifting – regime.
This is the largest Corolla
wagon so far, although a roofline
that slopes away steeply toward
the rear of the vehicle does
compromise load height. Like
the Corolla hatch, rear seat
space is tight, especially head
and leg room. Overall it isn’t
a commodious load hauler of
people or cargo. A refreshed
cabin features pleasant yet hard
wearing fabric seats, and smart
key entry with push button start.
Toyota’s excellent Safety Sense
technology package is standard
with impressive pedestrian and
cyclist detection capabilities.
Other noteworthy inclusions are
autonomous emergency braking,
all speed dynamic radar cruise
control, plus a bunch of other
safety tech you wouldn’t expect
to find in a small wagon in this
price bracket.
Handling is a vast
improvement on the Corolla
wagons that have come before.
Generally, the suspension
reacts quickly to sudden and
unexpected changes in direction
by the driver, or instigated
without warning by sub-standard
road surfaces.
Less engaging steering than
the Corolla hatch reflects the
fact that the wagon is tuned
for the Japanese market. Their
drivers prefer steering with a
softer, more comfortable feel,
rather than setups with sporty
aspirations and intent. While
both the handling and steering
of the wagon lack the crispness
of the hatch, it works fine in a
vehicle focused on practicality
and versatility.
