Residents in dark over 

fire prevention work

LYTTELTON RESIDENTS want 

the city council to tell them when 

work to reduce fire risk at a reserve 

will be finished. 

Residents of Foster Tce, next to 

the Urumau Reserve, want the 

maintenance completed by the end 

of the year due to the upcoming 

dry summer forecast. 

“There’s more potentially starting 

to happen. We need to keep an 

eye on and make certain they are 

doing it,” said Foster Tce resident 

Brian Lodge (right). 

The homes on Foster Tce are 

located directly underneath the 

council-owned reserve’s boundaries. 

“It doesn’t take much. It could be 

just somebody throwing a cigarette 

in the area and then we’re in trouble,” 

said Lodge. 

Contractors employed by the city 

council began additional maintenance 

work from November 14 to 

17. Residents do not know when 

they are coming back. 

Lodge said council upkeep of the 

reserve had become irregular since 

the February 22, 2011, earthquake.

New song an ode to Sumner 


MUSICIAN Neville Barrie has 

written a catchy tune for Sumner 

to celebrate the old and look 

forward to the new. 

Sumner by the Sea hopes to 

capture the area’s spirit and mark 

a new chapter with the opening 

of the Coastal Pathway. 

Barrie said the song pays tribute 

to the Sumner he grew up in. 

“It’s a swan song to say thank 

you,” he said. 

The 81-year-old has been an 

entertainer and musician for 

decades. He is most well known 

for being the lead singer and 

guitarist for The Footsteps in the 

1970s. Barrie has also worked as 

a magician and comedian. 

He lives in Moncks Bay with 

his wife Liz. 

In the song, a reggae beat, 

shakers and subtle electric guitar 

emulate the feeling of the beach 

and nostalgia for the past. 

Barrie said the Coastal Pathway 

is a positive addition to 

Sumner and will encourage more 

visitors. 

“Go for a walk in the morning 

and see the sunrise and see the 

ships. It’s really quite fantastic.” 

In the song he sings of the impact 

the pathway might have. 

Coastal pathways lead the way 

for families and holidays like it 

used to be, Sumner by the sea. 

The lyrics explore the suburb’s 

community feel, as well as iconic 

locations like Cave Rock.

Barrie expresses his deep care 

for Sumner in the opening line.

hopes to perform the song in 

local schools.

Researcher makes bid for Lyttelton board seat

Corsair Bay resident to try and 

win the Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū 

Banks Peninsula Community 

Board by-election. 

Dr Jillian Frater (right), 

a Canterbury University 

researcher, is running for the 

Lyttelton subdivision seat vacated 

by Reuben Davidson, who 

stood and won Christchurch 

East for Labour in the 

general election. 

As of yesterday, Frater 

was the only contender. 

Nominations opened on 

Friday and close on December 

22. 

Postal voting for the 

by-election will open on 

January 26 and close at 

noon on February 17. 

Frater has lived in 

Corsair Bay for more than 

30 years. 

She is a post-doctoral 

researcher specialising in 

geography and regional 

planning. 

“I’m interested in the issues 

that the community board 

faces, including adapting to 

climate change, managing 

visitors to Banks Peninsula and 

maintaining and enhancing the 

quality of the environment,” 

she said. Frater is president of 

the Lyttelton Tennis Club and 

a meal runner for the Lyttelton 

Community House. 

“I care about this community, 

and I care about the environment 

we all live in.”

NZ risk assessment found the reserve 

needed consistent mowing 

during summer. 

Lodge and another Foster Tce 

resident, Anne Sergison, have 

been calling for a more consistent 

mowing schedule and fire 

resistant plant species to create 

an effective buffer between the 

reserve and properties. 

Lyttelton fire chief Mark Buckley 

would not comment on the 

state of the fire risk at the reserve. 

Sergison, who lives at the end 

of Foster Tce, said the space between 

the track and her property 

has become overgrown. 

She has been asking for the 

area to be tidied up over the past

The recent maintenance carried 

out was not near Sergison’s 

property. 

The FENZ assessment also 

found the removal of dead plant 

material would reduce fire risk. 

Lodge said earlier this month, a 

Port Hills ranger visited Urumau 

and recognised additional work 

was needed. 

A city council spokesperson 

said the planned maintenance 

was “mainly due to increased 

growth this year compared to 

other years” and “a forecasted 

higher fire danger season”. 

Lodge said he and others have 

made numerous presentations to 

the council, community board 

and reserve committees since 

regular maintenance stopped 

after the earthquake. 

“I feel as if I have complained 

enough. Very little has been done 

as a result up until now.” 

Going forward, Lodge and Sergison 

want more certainty about 

how often mowing of the track 

will take place. 

They also want the new maintenance 

complete by the end of 

the year, before the dry season 

begins. 

“I’d like to see it done 

sooner rather than later,” Sergison 

said. 

A council spokesperson said 

contractors and council rangers 

will be working to maintain the 

reserve as often “as required.” 

There is no schedule for when 

the maintenance will occur to 

allow for flexibility, the spokesperson 

said. 

Last Friday, the council 

spokesperson said the next round 

of maintenance will likely take 

place in two to three weeks.

A FARMING family is playing 

its part in protecting the 

largest little penguin colony on 

mainland New Zealand. 

Sheep and beef farmers 

Shireen and Francis Helps have 

been carrying out predator 

control and rehabilitation of a 

2000-strong colony of kororā, 

or white-flippered penguins, on 

their Flea Bay property for years. 

Kororā, endemic only to Canterbury, 

are one of the smallest 

and most endangered penguins 

in the world. 

The farming pair ran an 

eco-tourism business called 

Pōhatu Tours, which involved 

taking tourists from Akaroa out 

on 4WD trucks off to the peninsula’s 

wild side to see the colony. 

Shireen Helps said they had 

been trapping predators, fencing 

and rehabilitating the kororā 

colony on their farm for decades 

– but the fight was not over. 

“We’re keeping the predators 

out of the colonies,” Helps said. 

“We got on top of the ferrets 

years and years ago, so actually 

we haven’t seen a ferret in the bay 

for a very long time. 

“We do have an ongoing 

problem with stoats. They’re very 

hard to catch. Very cunning little 

blighters.” 

Helps said the colony spread 

into neighbouring properties, 

which includes Department of 

Conservation and QEII convenant 

land, and was grazed by 

their 800 breeding ewes and 20 

cattle. 

“Of course, we graze that, 

because the worst enemy for 

penguins is long grass and dense 

vegetation. The predators go mad 

in it, and that causes problems 

for the rats and mice. Predators 

come in after them, and that’s 

when you start to lose birds.” 

Other threats to the penguins 

were extreme heat and severe 

weather events – and they had 

had their share of both, she said. 

The area had been a hub of

severe floods smashed the peninsula, 

especially in rural areas, 

in December 2021 – damaging 

properties, roads, and destroying 

kilometres of critical conservation 

fencing designed to keep 

predators out. 

It caused landslips down the 

back of the Helps’ property towards 

the colony’s habitat. 

“The fences were munted . . . 

The team was running around in 

the rain rescuing penguins out 

of the boxes and burrows as the 

hill started to fall down and the 

creek came up,” she said. 

“The penguin boxes were just 

going out to sea so we ended up 

with 30 chicks in the kitchen 

here in cages. 

“Plus the sheep in the house, 

too.” 

Environment Canterbury 

allocated $132,000 towards 

re-instating it over the past two 

years – which Helps said was a 

godsend, in addition to the endless 

generosity of local businesses, 

their guides and volunteers 

to continue their conservation 

work. 

ECan zone delivery lead for 

Banks Peninsula and Selwyn/ 

Waihora Gill Jenkins said the 

post-flood recovery of biodiversity, 

enhancement of water quality 

and mahinga kai values were key 

priorities for the zone. 

“Providing assistance to protect 

some of the areas that are 

so important to biodiversity on 

the peninsula was one way we 

could help when the community 

needed it,” she said.

No trees for 

Christmas 

this year 

THE ROTARY Club of 

Linwood-Woolston is unlikely to 

sell Christmas trees this year. 

Club president Rod Bourke- 

Shaw said the trees they have 

sold at Barnett Park for the past 

two years were grown on a block 

of his family’s land in Gebbies 

Pass, but they have now grown 

too large to be sold as Christmas 

trees. 

Bourke-Shaw said the club 

wants to continue the Christmas 

tree sales if they can find a 

new supplier. 

Bourke-Shaw said the club 

sold about 300 trees a year over 

the past two years. 

“We knew it wasn’t going to 

last, but for that time it was the 

perfect opportunity to make 

some money for our club. 

“Our thanks to everyone as 

it has enabled us to provide 

support to those in need in our 

community.” 

Trees were also sold from a 

club member’s house in Fendalton 

and outside Eastgate. 

Bourke-Shaw thanked club 

members for their efforts during 

the previous years. 

“It was just a wonderful, wonderful, 

little project.”

Harbour volunteers work 

to combat weeds and pests

Project has hit the ground 

running with ambitious goals 

to tackle invasive plants and 

animals in Whakaraupō 

Lyttelton Harbour. 

WOPP coordinator Katie 

Dunlop says the dual focus on 

plants and animals is important 

to help restore the Harbour’s 

native ecosystems. 

“We have a lot of pesky plants 

like spur valerian and old man’s 

beard here. They can grow much 

faster than our native plants, so if 

we don’t get on top of them they 

can easily smother new plantings,” 

said Dunlop. 

Dunlop runs volunteer weeding 

days at Urumau Reserve and 

several other spots around the 

Harbour. 

“You can get heaps done with 

a good group of volunteers,” she 

said. 

TE ŪAKA Lyttelton Museum 

is pleased to have collaborated 

with Lyttelton Engineering 

for the second year running 

on a calendar celebrating 

Whakaraupō Lyttelton 

Harbour’s rich history. 

Lyttelton Engineering has been 

an integral part of the port town 

since 1953, growing to become 

one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s 

largest engineering companies, 

with a staff of nearly 100. They 

are committed to providing 

training opportunities for the 

future generation of marine 

and industrial engineers. With 

strong relationships within the 

local community, they are proud 

supporters of the mission to 

rebuild a museum in the heart of 

the township. 

The 2024 calendar focuses on 

a selection of historic buildings 

and structures in Ōhinehou 

Lyttelton and at Te Waipapa 

Diamond Harbour. Of the 12 

“If we can get rid of the plants 

before they flower and set seed, 

we can stop the spread.” 

Some of the weeds can be deceptively 

pretty – like the bright 

pink flowers of spur valerian or 

the yellow daisy-like flowers of 

boneseed. Spur valerian loves 

rocky outcrops and coastal cliffs 

and easily out-competes native 

plant species, while other pests 

like wilding pines and boneseed 

pose a significant fire risk. 

As well as running weeding 

days, Dunlop has mobilised a 

motivated group of community 

trappers. So far the project, 

supported by Whaka-Ora 

Healthy Harbour, a collaboration 

between the city council, ECan, 

Ngāi Tahu and Lyttelton Port 

Company has 25 volunteer trappers 

signed on. Trappers spend 

an afternoon with Dunlop learning 

the ropes – how to safely set 

and check a trap, and how to record 

their results – before taking 

featured only five remain, with 

one, the War Memorial, on a 

new site at Albion Square. The 

rest have either fallen victim 

on the trapline themselves. 

Father and son Gary and Tom 

Freedman live at Cass Bay and 

have adopted a trapline at Steadfast 

Reserve. 

Getting involved with WOPP 

was a no-brainer for Gary. 

“As Cass Bay residents, we’ve 

been active in the planting and 

maintenance of native trees and 

have enjoyed watching these new 

forests grow,” he said. 

“Controlling pests goes hand 

in hand with restoring the land, 

so it was natural to help out the 

trapping teams.” 

The WOPP trapping programme 

is only six weeks old but 

the group is already recording 

great results. So far, they’ve 

caught around 90 rats, mice, 

hedgehogs and possums, and 

have even trapped an elusive 

stoat.

Racewalker step closer to Olympics 


AN OLYMPIC hopeful wants 

to go all the way in racewalking, 

but first he has to raise the 

funds to fly to the world 

championships. 

Jonah Cropp, 18, from Sumner 

will represent New Zealand in 

the 10km event at the World 

Athletics racewalking team 

championships in Turkey in 

April. 

“It does feel really good with 

how far I’ve come with it, but I 

still plan to go way, way further,” 

he said. 

The recently graduated St 

Andrew’s College student began 

racewalking when he was 10. 

His peers did not take the sport 

seriously when he first started. 

“People just thought it was a 

wee silly thing. But, as I got more 

and more awards for it, they 

started being, like, even if they 

didn’t know me, oh, that’s the 

speedwalking guy.” 

Racewalking is similar to 

speed or powerwalking and has 

two main rules – one foot must 

be on the ground at all times 

and competitors must keep their 

bottom leg straight until the 

leading leg lands. 

Cropp said the most difficult 

challenge is maintaining speed 

over a long distance. 

“You have to really work to try 

and keep the same pace for every 

single kilometre.” 

He won the 10km 

event at the New Zealand road 

running championships in 

September. His time of 47min, 

23sec in the under-20 event 

qualified him for the world 

championships. 

To save the $3000 required for 

the trip to Turkey, Cropp will 

host sausage sizzles and offer a 

lawn mowing service. 

He plans to study psychology 

and sports coaching at 

Canterbury University next year. 

“I’m going to be focusing a lot 

more on my sport.” 

Cropp’s long-term goal is 

to qualify for the Los Angeles 

Olympics in 2028 or Brisbane in 

2032. 

To prepare for the world 

championships he trains in the 

gym twice a week and has a 

cardio session on Sunday and a 

race on Saturday. 

“It’s very enjoyable. I’ve made 

tonnes of progress, looking back 

at what I was doing last year 

compared to this year, or the year 

beforehand.”

VOLUNTEERS removed more 

than 40kg of rubbish from 

streets and parks on Sunday. 

The fourth Lyttelton Litter 

Hunt saw 15 adults and two 

children collect bags of loose 

rubbish and recycling. 

“Many hands make light 

work,” said event organiser 

Duncan Wilcox. 

He said the hunt aimed 

to prevent rubbish from 

polluting the harbour. 

“It is just something that 

makes me and, I think, other 

people feel a wee bit better for 

having made a very small dent in 

a huge problem.” 

He said the wind and rubbish 

from the port exacerbate the 

litter issue in Lyttelton. 

The organisers did not set 

a specific goal for the day, but 

the objective was to pick up as 

much rubbish and recycling as 

possible. 

Volunteers were supplied with 

gloves, bags and collection tools 

when they met in the car park 

behind Lyttelton Coffee Co. 

They collected from 10.30am 

to noon. 

Wilcox organised the event 

after collecting rubbish on his 

own. “I thought what a great 

thing if we could enlist the 

Lyttelton folks to join in the 

community clean-up.” 

He is planning future litter 

hunts. 

“The litter just keeps coming 

back.” 

The volunteers collected a 

similar amount to previous 

hunts, filling their bags with 

41.25kg of litter. 

“We got lots of compliments 

and thank yous from people 

walking around Lyttelton,” said 

Wilcox. 

Resident Jono Pinamonti 

collected 15kg of rubbish, more 

than any other person taking 

part.

Wilcox wants to see more 

families get involved in the next 

hunt. 

“We are really trying 

to get the kids and their parents 

involved as an educational 

experience.”

the past four hunts.

need your help! 

The Sechka family live in a rural area 

of Sarny region, western Ukraine, in 

an old dilapidated house. Mykhailo, 

40, and his wife Nadiya, 31, work hard to 

provide for their family. They face a massive 

challenge as three of their five children have 

severe disabilities. One of their daughters 

is unable to walk at all. The health of 

their children means they need medical 

examinations, check-ups, and treatment. 

Which costs money. 

Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but 

when the war began, he lost most of his 

wages then he had to quit. Since then, he 

has focused on farming and keeps cows, 

pigs, geese, and poultry to survive. 

Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they 

are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate 

a lot of land to grow forage for the animals, 

and vegetables and grain for the family. He 

was using an old tractor that he bought 15 

years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and 

required constant repair. Mykhailo says that

such as tools and machinery, so they can 

grow food for themselves. 

Right now, the Ukrainian economy 

is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So,

Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have 

resulted in physical and psychological

technology delivers a constant 

EV-like drive, thanks to the 

driven wheels being powered 

only by the electric motors. 

Both the exterior and interior 

of the new X-Trail are smart, 

modern and versatile. The 

exterior is highlighted by 

signature Nissan design elements 

such as the floating roof and 

V-motion grille – while a unique

The flagship $66,990 model 

Ti-L e-POWER with e-4ORCE,

but still headed off at the power

to frugal fuel consumption 

bragging rights, the RAV4 

Hybrid gets its nose in front of 

the X-Trail’s claimed 6.1L/100km, 

with a claimed 5.3L/100km. 

Most hybrid systems use 

an electric motor and a petrol 

engine to drive their wheels. 

Nissan’s e-POWER does things 

differently with its wheels being 

powered exclusively by an 

electric motor. Thanks to the 

pure electric motor, there’s none 

of the power-delivery hesitancy 

associated with an internal 

combustion engine hybrid set-up. 

The electric motors and battery 

are kept charged by a 1.5-litre 

turbo-charged petrol engine, 

and the wheels are only driven 

by the electric motor. Thanks to 

the pure electric motor drive, 

there is none of the power lag of 

an internal combustion engine or 

traditional hybrid. The X-Trail’s 

EV Mode allows a near-silent 

EV-like drive experience at much 

higher speeds (up to 100km/h) 

than conventional hybrids. A 

drive mode selector provides the 

flexibility of five driving modes 

- Off-Road, Snow, Auto, Eco and 

Sport. 

The powerful dual e-motor 

system offers nippy acceleration, 

thanks to the addition of a rear 

motor, with a zero-100km/h 

time of just 7.0 seconds. The 

e-4ORCE twin-motor allwheel-drive 

system delivers 

reassuring traction and confident 

acceleration in all conditions in 

damp, muddy, icy and snowy 

conditions. It’s smoother and 

livelier to drive than most 

hybrids and its almost instant 

throttle response can be a bit 

addictive. It is about as close as 

you will get to full EV driving in 

a vehicle that isn’t EV, but does a 

darn good job of impersonating 

one. 

A new-generation Constant 

Variable Transmission (CVT) 

delivers better fuel economy 

thanks to improved ratio 

coverage. Several upgrades 

ensure a big step up from the 

lethargic and indifferent CVT 

used in the previous model. 

For a mid-sized SUV this 

one is roomier than most, with 

plenty of passenger and load 

space. A sizeable 575 litre boot 

has excellent floor length and all 

important width between wheel 

arches for bulkier loads. 

A higher resolution 12.3- 

inch display screen covers off 

navigation, entertainment 

and vehicle settings, and is
