Planting out waterways 

sure ‘beats math class’ 

SCHOOL KIDS have been 

getting their hands dirty 

to restore the area around 

Beckenham Ponds. 

Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto 

(Beckenham School) pupils 

from years 5-6 have been 

hard at work restoring and 

planting out the area as part of 

the healthy waterways school 

programme. 

City council staff have worked 

corroboratively to support the 

pupils with planting native trees 

and learning about the unique, 

spring-fed wetland. 

The pupils proudly boast 

about the number of plants 

they have put in the ground this 

season, delicately weeding while 

searching for bugs and pointing 

out bubbles surfacing from the 

spring-fed ponds. 

“We spent the whole day 

planting at the start of the year 

and got to stay by the water all 

day,” one student said. 

“It’s been so rainy this year we 

haven’t been able to come down 

as much, but this beats math 

class.” 

City council community 

waterways adviser Georgina St 

John-Ives said the council has 

had a long relationship with the 

school. 

“We make sure to support 

them with ongoing maintenance 

and a long-term commitment 

to the ponds. 

“The area has become a 

special place that holds a deep 

connection with the school and 

a real gem through the restoration.” 

The healthy waterways 

programme is run through the 

community waterways partnership, 

which supports the development 

of initiatives to improve 

the health and biodiversity of 

the city’s urban waterways. 

Said city council community 

partnerships ranger Heidi Wilton: 

“It’s important to nurture 

the relationships we develop 

through this programme, making 

sure we practice sustainability 

and support the community.” 

The Beckenham circuit was 

traditionally used by Māori as 

place for gathering food. 

The ponds are the only 

remaining area of the marsh 

today, and with the help of 

the local community are 

being restored to their natural 

environment. 

I couldn’t praise Cameron more highly for his communication - I

New song an ode to Sumner

MUSICIAN Neville Barrie 

has written a catchy tune for 

Sumner to celebrate the old 

and look forward to the new. 

Sumner by the Sea hopes to 

capture the area’s spirit and 

mark a new chapter with the 

opening of the Coastal Pathway. 

Barrie said the song pays 

tribute to the Sumner he grew 

up in. 

“It’s a swan song to say thank 

you,” he said. 

The 81-year-old has been 

an entertainer and musician 

for decades. He is most well 

known for being the lead 

singer and guitarist for The 

Footsteps in the 1970s. Barrie 

has also worked as a magician 

and comedian. 

He lives in Moncks Bay with 

his wife Liz. 

In the song, a reggae beat, 

shakers and subtle electric 

guitar emulate the feeling of 

the beach and nostalgia for the 

past. 

Barrie said the Coastal 

Pathway is a positive addition 

to Sumner and will encourage 

more visitors. 

“Go for a walk in the morning 

and see the sunrise and 

see the ships. It’s really quite 

fantastic.” 

In the song he sings of the 

impact the pathway might 

have. 

Coastal pathways lead the 

way for families and holidays 

like it used to be, Sumner by the 

sea. 

The lyrics explore the suburb’s 

community feel, as well 

as iconic locations like Cave 

Rock.

Barrie expresses his deep 

care for Sumner in the opening 

line.

Santa drops in before the big day

THE FESTIVE season was 

launched in style with the first 

ever Christmas Show Parade at 

Canterbury Agricultural Park. 

Blue skies and warm temperatures 

attracted more than 

35,000 people to the colourful 

spectacle on Sunday. 

Parade director Jason Reekers 

said it was great to finally 

get the event up and running 

after a four-year break due to 

Covid and rain last year. 

“We have all of the old traditional 

Santa parade floats that 

date back 75 years,” he said. 

The last Christmas parade 

in the city was held in 2019 on 

Madras St. 

“We’ve restored them 

all, fixed all the motors, and 

we’ve got some new ones. 

We’ve got 66 entries in the 

parade, all singing, 

all dancing and they’re looking 

beautiful.” 

The floats will include a giant 

Mother Goose, Disney Princesses 

and traditional favourites 

like the Mad Hatter.Reekers 

said logistics meant rethinking 

the event and combining the 

parade with a festival. 

“We couldn’t get the parade 

in the city. Christchurch has 

been designed in a way that it 

can’t really host a parade. So 

we’ve had everything here at 

the park, but we couldn’t just 

bring people here to the park 

just for a parade. So we’ve had 

to supply entertainment.” 

The event is run by the 

Christchurch Children’s Christmas 

Parade Trust, which want 

to re-establish it as the city’s 

premier Christmas celebration.

Santa’s Brekkie Pancakes 

with fresh berries 

This one is not just for the kids – the sweetness of the bananas makes these 

pancakes scrumptious and a delicious, healthy breakfast hit for everyone! 

You will need: 

• 4-5 bananas (soft enough to mash) 

• 4 eggs 

• ½ cup rice flour 

• 2 tbsp whole linseed 

• ½ tsp salt 

• grated lemon rind 

• juice from 1 lemon 

• splash of vanilla 

• butter to cook the pancakes 

Method: 

1. Peel and mash the bananas in a bowl. 

2. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, linseed, salt 

and lemon ingredients. 

3. Add flour and mix to a smooth batter. 

4. Cook pancakes in frypan on one side 

until they bubble on the surface or hold 

together enough to be flipped over. 

5. If the mixture is thick, flatten the 

pancakes out once they’ve been turned 

over. Each pancake should be around 

1cm thick. 

Kid’s version: 

Decorate each pancake with red berries 

for Santa’s hat, Greek yoghurt or 

whipped cream for Santa’s beard and
