Chess-inspired blockades
installed at Hornby Hub
ROOK NO FURTHER: Following a ram raid earlier this year pawn-shaped bollards have been installed at the Hub, blocking the entrance from future
attempts. The metal barriers shown above remain present along the side of the road.
• By Sasha Watson
GIANT chess-board pawns
now guard the entrance to
the Hub Hornby.
After looking at options
for traditional bollards,
Hub Hornby senior centre
manager Jason Marsden
said while there were a lot,
there were not many that
were “actually capable of
stopping a vehicle at speed.”
Said Marsden: “Most are
more visual markers to
Jason
Marsden
delineate pedestrian and
vehicle spaces.
“Those that are capable
of stopping a vehicle
require major belowground
installation
works which adds a huge
amount of cost and once
installed it really cannot
be relocated.”
Marsden then set about
looking for mass-based
above-ground options.
“Whilst there were some
available in New Zealand,
typically they were on the small
side and I was sceptical about
their ability to stop a vehicle
travelling at speed which could
potentially just push them aside
rendering them useless,” he
said.
Marsden settled on the shape
based on a chess pawn and
went through many iterations
looking at proportions, base
size and height, along with the
size of the top sphere while
considering the centre of mass
and its stability.
“The Hub has a culture of innovation,
so I set about designing
something that would meet
our requirements. The target
weight was 1.5t and would require
lifting points to be able to
be easily placed and relocated,”
said Marsden.
“Further, something that
would be pedestrian and
trolley-friendly without corners
or sharp edges. Once I was
happy with the design, I then
had to locate a company that
could produce them.”
After an extensive search,
the perfect company for the job
was located just down the road
in Rolleston.
Said Marsden: “Cancast had
the skills and knowledge to
produce the mould, design the
required internal reinforcing
to incorporate the single top
lifting bolt and successfully
cast the bollards to a very high
standard of finish.
“We are very happy with the
result and have received a lot of
positive feedback.”

Friendly gym provides a sense of belonging
For those people considering joining
a gym but are not sure if it’s for them,
Wigram Culture Fitness offers an
experience unlike any other.
As owner Heather Peterson explains:
“We have created an environment at
our gym in Wigram that is supportive.
Our members come from a wide
range of ages, from fathers and sons
to mothers and daughters, through to
husbands and wives in their 80s.
“Our gym provides a sense of
belonging and an environment where
everyone feels welcome and part of the
Culture Fitness family.
“We have various workout zones and
gym facilities and, in conjunction with
these, our gym offers Express Fitness
Lanes combined with the Fitness App
Myzone.”
Finding the best gym can be compared
to forging a new relationship. With a bit
of personal reflection, pre-planning,
and some vetting, you will be on the
path to what could be a match made in
heaven (at least when it comes to this
key element of your fitness journey).
Remember, you are investing your
time, money, and energy into a gym,
and you need to be certain that you
have made the best choice for you
and your training goals. You may be
enticed to base your decision on online
reviews or friends’ recommendations,
and while that’s an excellent starting
point, there should be a few more
components to consider. Here at
Wigram Culture fitness we want you to
come in and have a look around, and
make sure we are the best fit for your
Fitness Journey.
“People are sometimes fearful of being
watched and judged at a gym,” Heather
says, “but Wigram Culture Fitness is
not like that. We’re full of locals of all
shapes and sizes, ages and ethnicities.
“Everyone is on a different journey,
so come and share yours with us and
discover a really friendly, supportive
environment.”
Turning light gets thumbs up
• By Sasha Watson
RESIDENTS SAY they feel safer
since a green arrow was added
to the Amyes Rd/Goulding Ave/
Shands Rd intersection lights
two weeks ago.
The Greater Hornby
Residents Association has been
campaigning for the turning
light at the busy intersection
for several years – and says the
feedback so far has been very
positive.
Said former
association
member and now
Hornby Ward
city councillor
Mark Peters: “I’m
hearing from
Mark
Peters
many sources
how fabulous the
green arrows are
working.
“I’ve even heard reports that
the arrows even help clear
approaching, not just already
queued, traffic, thus making
a huge improvement on travel
flow and planning.”
The residents association
started advocating for a green
arrow from Amyes Rd into
Shands Rd about five years ago.
Said Halswell councillor
Andrei Moore: “I remember
when I first started as the
Halswell councillor about four
years ago, the association had
already been pushing for the
green arrow – the project has
been going on for years.
“It’s great that the lights were
all done at the same time, and
the community can now drive
safely through Hornby and
Halswell.” The new right-turn
arrow was described by Peters
as “an absolute win”.
“There are now further
requests for additional arrows
to be added onto Shands Rd
approaching Amyes and Goulding,”
said Peters.
“A huge thanks to all those
involved in getting this done, it’s
a great example of community
and council working together to
get the results the community
desperately need.”
The push for the arrow came
after a traffic light pole at the
intersection had been hit by
several vehicles and the community
had to wait 18-months
for a new pole to be put in.
A previous online discussion
regarding the difficulty of
turning right also saw about
100 people commenting on the
issue.
Between January 1, 2018,
and January 1, 2021, there were
seven crashes at the intersection,
one of which resulted in a minor
injury.
construction and is due to open
in early 2024.
City council head of libraries
Christmas parade in four years
• By Geoff Sloan
THE FESTIVE season was
launched in style with the first
ever Christmas Show Parade at
Canterbury Agricultural Park.
Blue skies and warm temperatures
attracted more than
35,000 people to the colourful
spectacle on Sunday.
Parade director Jason Reekers
said it was great to finally
get the event up and running
after a four-year break due to
Covid and rain last year.
“We have all of the old traditional
Santa parade floats that
date back 75 years,” he said.
The last Christmas parade
in the city was held in 2019 on
Madras St.
“We’ve restored them
all, fixed all the motors, and
we’ve got some new ones.
We’ve got 66 entries in the
parade, all singing,
all dancing and they’re looking
beautiful.”
The floats will include a giant
Mother Goose, Disney Princesses
and traditional favourites
like the Mad Hatter.Reekers
said logistics meant rethinking
the event and combining the
parade with a festival.
“We couldn’t get the parade
in the city. Christchurch has
been designed in a way that it
can’t really host a parade. So
we’ve had everything here at
the park, but we couldn’t just
bring people here to the park
just for a parade. So we’ve had
to supply entertainment.”
The event is run by the
Christchurch Children’s Christmas
Parade Trust, which want
to re-establish it as the city’s
premier Christmas celebration.
Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up
the music, drink the wine and go all out
to deck the halls.
3. Make and send homemade Christmas
cards – there’s nothing more exciting
than getting mail, right? Or how about
writing some generic ones and dropping
them into your nearest retirement
home to brighten up an elderly person’s
Christmas.
4. Buy your family Christmas tee-shirts or
Santa hats to wear on the day and don’t
forget to take a family selfie.
5. Fill a shoebox with gifts for a child, wrap
it with a bow, and deliver to the nearest
community gift tree – check with your
local library and label with age and
gender.
6. Have a yearly family, friends or neighbour
outdoor games night with drinks and
nibbles leading up to the big day – think
Pétanque, hoopla, mini golf, giant chess,
or croquet.
7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional
‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood,
and give a book as a gift on Christmas
Eve each year – don’t forget to write
inside the cover who it’s from and the
date.
8. Make a list of must see Christmas movies
to watch a week before Christmas day
and tick off the ones you’ve watched.
Don’t forget the popcorn and hot
chocolate or nibbles and wine.
9. Make and give a handmade ornament
as a gift each year – the lucky receiver’s
Christmas tree will be covered with
beautiful, handmade memories.
10. Make homemade hot chocolate on
Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning
to drink while the presents are being
opened – decorate with whipped cream,
grated chocolate, marshmallows, or
crushed candy canes.
Santa’s Brekkie Pancakes
with fresh berries
This one is not just for the kids – the sweetness of the bananas makes these
pancakes scrumptious and a delicious, healthy breakfast hit for everyone!
You will need:
• 4-5 bananas (soft enough to mash)
• 4 eggs
• ½ cup rice flour
• 2 tbsp whole linseed
• ½ tsp salt
• grated lemon rind
• juice from 1 lemon
• splash of vanilla
• butter to cook the pancakes
Method:
1. Peel and mash the bananas in a bowl.
2. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, linseed, salt
and lemon ingredients.
3. Add flour and mix to a smooth batter.
4. Cook pancakes in frypan on one side
until they bubble on the surface or hold
together enough to be flipped over.
5. If the mixture is thick, flatten the
pancakes out once they’ve been turned
over. Each pancake should be around
1cm thick.
Kid’s version:
Decorate each pancake with red berries
for Santa’s hat, Greek yoghurt or
whipped cream for Santa’s beard and
chocolate buttons or grape halves for
Santa’s eyes.
Adult’s version:
Serve with a mix of fresh strawberries,
blueberries, raspberries, and
boysenberries. Top off with Greek
yoghurt.
Premium CX-90 joins Mazda’s ranks
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
MAZDA HAS launched a twopronged
attack on our medium
and large SUV market with its
new CX-60 and CX-90, a couple
of genuine standouts that should
have their rivals worried.
The CX-90 is a worthy flagship
that’s wider, longer, and more aggressively
proportioned than any
current Mazda. Joining Mazda’s
respected SUV range, these two
are the first products to launch
off Mazda’s new Large Product
platform, bringing fresh new designs
paired with highly efficient,
electrified power trains.
Both the CX-60 and the CX-
90 are the most important new
models for Mazda in a generation.
Easily the largest and most
imposing model is the highly
specified $92,990 CX-90 Takami
inline six being evaluated here,
amidst claims about it using
less fuel and producing fewer
emissions from a fair lump of an
engine.
The CX-90 is offered exclusively
with Mazda’s most powerful
production engine ever – a
3.3L inline six-cylinder motor
featuring 48V mild-hybrid assist
technology. Engines of this type
and size are almost a throw back
to the 1980s and 1990s, to the
large Ford and Holden Aussie
sixes back then. Of course those
motors and this newcomer have
absolutely nothing in common,
apart from similar engine capacities.
The CX-90 motor is a totally
different beast, with 254kW of
power and heaps of low speed
heft thanks to 500Nm of torque.
Not surprisingly it’s easily outpointed
in just about every direction
on the performance compass
by this mighty new sophisticated
and refined six. It’s a highly
accomplished and well-crafted
motor in real-world driving, and
a class standout for smoothness
and refinement that not only
equals, but also betters a number
of more costly rivals. This is one
of the most relaxing, yet responsive,
large, luxury SUVs I have
driven in the $100k price bracket,
with excellent low-speed throttle
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 7; Build
Quality 8; Comfort 8; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value
for money 8; Road test avg consumption 10.2L /100km;
Safety – ANCAP crash rating 5 star.
Overall points out of 10: 8
response and pulling power.
This new generation motor has
a new polished gear-changing
companion in the form of a
freshly developed 8-speed automatic.
That’s two extra ratios
than the long serving 6-speed
automatic that’s still a mainstay
current Mazda range.
The CX-90 Takami offers
voluminous amounts of people
and load space and 7-seat versatility.
Mazda have got the luxury
detailing right with a 12-speaker
Bose surround sound system,
360 View Monitor camera system
plus Adaptive LED Headlights
with glare-free high beam. Black
Nappa leather trim with heated
and ventilated front seats and
bright roof rails give the CX-90
a good nudge even further up
Quality St.
Mazda i-Activsense safety
throws an all-encompassing
security blanket around the vehicle’s
occupants, with 10 airbags
Radar Cruise Control and Blind
Spot Monitoring with vehicle exit
warning function. The system
isn’t done there, with a driver
fatigue Monitoring camera and
a Lane-keep Assist System with
Departure Warning.
For its size and weight, body
roll is well disciplined and
managed even when travelling
briskly over undulating roads.
The all-wheel drive system brings
commendable stick ability and
tenacity to the road holding and
handling party.
Mazda sets a high benchmark
for consistently communicative
and nicely weighted steering, and
this vehicle delivers. I admire
how the CX-90 intelligently
blends exceptional luxury, space,
pace, ride and road holding, to
create one of the most convincing
large premium luxury seven seat
SUVs on our market.
