After looking at options 

for traditional bollards, 

Hub Hornby senior centre 

manager Jason Marsden 

said while there were a lot, 

there were not many that 

were “actually capable of 

stopping a vehicle at speed.” 

Said Marsden: “Most are 

more visual markers to

vehicle spaces. 

“Those that are capable 

of stopping a vehicle 

require major belowground 

installation 

works which adds a huge 

amount of cost and once 

installed it really cannot 

be relocated.” 

Marsden then set about 

looking for mass-based 

above-ground options. 

“Whilst there were some 

available in New Zealand, 

typically they were on the small 

side and I was sceptical about 

their ability to stop a vehicle 

travelling at speed which could 

potentially just push them aside 

rendering them useless,” he 

said. 

Marsden settled on the shape 

based on a chess pawn and 

went through many iterations 

looking at proportions, base 

size and height, along with the 

size of the top sphere while 

considering the centre of mass 

and its stability. 

“The Hub has a culture of innovation, 

so I set about designing 

something that would meet 

our requirements. The target 

weight was 1.5t and would require 

lifting points to be able to 

be easily placed and relocated,” 

said Marsden. 

“Further, something that 

would be pedestrian and 

trolley-friendly without corners 

or sharp edges. Once I was 

happy with the design, I then 

had to locate a company that 

could produce them.” 

After an extensive search, 

the perfect company for the job 

was located just down the road 

in Rolleston. 

Said Marsden: “Cancast had 

the skills and knowledge to 

produce the mould, design the 

required internal reinforcing 

to incorporate the single top 

lifting bolt and successfully 

cast the bollards to a very high 

standard of finish. 

“We are very happy with the 

result and have received a lot of 

positive feedback.”

Turning light gets thumbs up 


RESIDENTS SAY they feel safer 

since a green arrow was added 

to the Amyes Rd/Goulding Ave/ 

Shands Rd intersection lights

light at the busy intersection 

for several years – and says the 

feedback so far has been very 

positive.

Shands Rd about five years ago.

green arrow – the project has 

been going on for years. 

“It’s great that the lights were 

all done at the same time, and 

the community can now drive 

safely through Hornby and 

Halswell.” The new right-turn 

arrow was described by Peters 

as “an absolute win”. 

“There are now further 

requests for additional arrows 

to be added onto Shands Rd 

approaching Amyes and Goulding,” 

said Peters. 

“A huge thanks to all those 

involved in getting this done, it’s 

a great example of community 

and council working together to 

get the results the community 

desperately need.” 

The push for the arrow came 

after a traffic light pole at the 

intersection had been hit by 

several vehicles and the community 

had to wait 18-months 

for a new pole to be put in. 

A previous online discussion 

regarding the difficulty of 

turning right also saw about 

100 people commenting on the 

issue. 

Between January 1, 2018, 

and January 1, 2021, there were 

seven crashes at the intersection, 

one of which resulted in a minor 

injury. 

Library to get 

professional 

creative suite

equipment in Hornby’s new 

library. 

The Matatiki Hornby Centre 

will include a bookable recording 

space, editing equipment 

and other creative resources. 

The new centre, which will 

see the relocation of Hornby 

Library from Goulding Ave to 

Kyle Park, is currently under 

construction and is due to open 

in early 2024. 

City council head of libraries 

Carolyn Robertson said the 

Auahatanga Creative Space is 

an exciting addition following 

the success of similar resources 

at other libraries. 

The space will be equipped 

with professional-grade video, 

sound and image editing 

software, as well as hardware 

including microphones, sound 

mixing boards and computers. 

Classes to learn how to use the 

equipment will be available 

to book. The Auahatanga 

Creative Space at Matatiki 

Hornby Centre will also be 

equipped with a laser cutter, 

3D printer, sewing machines 

and overlocker, heat press, 

embroidery machine, and other 

resources.

JOHN WILKES has taken out an 

award after 40 years of teaching 

maths at Burnside High School. 

He has been plying his trade at 

the school since 1978 and has inspired 

both students and teachers. 

Said Wilkes: “I was surprised 

and humbled to be awarded this 

award. I chose to teach mathematics 

because it was the subject 

I enjoyed most at school and I 

value the logic and rigour of the 

subject.”

Christmas parade in four years

THE FESTIVE season was 

launched in style with the first 

ever Christmas Show Parade at 

Canterbury Agricultural Park. 

Blue skies and warm temperatures 

attracted more than 

35,000 people to the colourful 

spectacle on Sunday. 

Parade director Jason Reekers 

said it was great to finally 

get the event up and running 

after a four-year break due to 

Covid and rain last year. 

“We have all of the old traditional 

Santa parade floats that 

date back 75 years,” he said. 

The last Christmas parade 

in the city was held in 2019 on 

Madras St. 

“We’ve restored them 

all, fixed all the motors, and 

we’ve got some new ones. 

We’ve got 66 entries in the 

parade, all singing, 

all dancing and they’re looking 

beautiful.” 

The floats will include a giant 

Mother Goose, Disney Princesses 

and traditional favourites 

like the Mad Hatter.Reekers 

said logistics meant rethinking 

the event and combining the 

parade with a festival. 

“We couldn’t get the parade 

in the city. Christchurch has 

been designed in a way that it 

can’t really host a parade. So 

we’ve had everything here at 

the park, but we couldn’t just 

bring people here to the park 

just for a parade. So we’ve had 

to supply entertainment.” 

The event is run by the 

Christchurch Children’s Christmas 

Parade Trust, which want 

to re-establish it as the city’s 

premier Christmas celebration.

Santa’s Brekkie Pancakes 

with fresh berries 

This one is not just for the kids – the sweetness of the bananas makes these 

pancakes scrumptious and a delicious, healthy breakfast hit for everyone! 

You will need: 

• 4-5 bananas (soft enough to mash) 

• 4 eggs 

• ½ cup rice flour 

• 2 tbsp whole linseed 

• ½ tsp salt 

• grated lemon rind 

• juice from 1 lemon 

• splash of vanilla 

• butter to cook the pancakes 

Method: 

1. Peel and mash the bananas in a bowl. 

2. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, linseed, salt 

and lemon ingredients. 

3. Add flour and mix to a smooth batter. 

4. Cook pancakes in frypan on one side 

until they bubble on the surface or hold 

together enough to be flipped over. 

5. If the mixture is thick, flatten the 

pancakes out once they’ve been turned 

over. Each pancake should be around 

1cm thick. 

Kid’s version: 

Decorate each pancake with red berries 

for Santa’s hat, Greek yoghurt or 

whipped cream for Santa’s beard and 

chocolate buttons or grape halves for 

Santa’s eyes. 

Adult’s version: 

Serve with a mix of fresh strawberries, 

blueberries, raspberries, and 

boysenberries. Top off with Greek 

yoghurt.

Premium CX-90 joins Mazda’s ranks

MAZDA HAS launched a twopronged 

attack on our medium 

and large SUV market with its 

new CX-60 and CX-90, a couple 

of genuine standouts that should 

have their rivals worried. 

The CX-90 is a worthy flagship 

that’s wider, longer, and more aggressively 

proportioned than any 

current Mazda. Joining Mazda’s 

respected SUV range, these two 

are the first products to launch 

off Mazda’s new Large Product 

platform, bringing fresh new designs 

paired with highly efficient, 

electrified power trains. 

Both the CX-60 and the CX- 

90 are the most important new 

models for Mazda in a generation. 

Easily the largest and most 

imposing model is the highly 

specified $92,990 CX-90 Takami 

inline six being evaluated here, 

amidst claims about it using 

less fuel and producing fewer 

emissions from a fair lump of an 

engine. 

The CX-90 is offered exclusively 

with Mazda’s most powerful 

production engine ever – a 

3.3L inline six-cylinder motor 

featuring 48V mild-hybrid assist 

technology. Engines of this type 

and size are almost a throw back 

to the 1980s and 1990s, to the 

large Ford and Holden Aussie 

sixes back then. Of course those 

motors and this newcomer have 

absolutely nothing in common, 

apart from similar engine capacities. 

The CX-90 motor is a totally 

different beast, with 254kW of 

power and heaps of low speed 

heft thanks to 500Nm of torque. 

Not surprisingly it’s easily outpointed 

in just about every direction 

on the performance compass 

by this mighty new sophisticated 

and refined six. It’s a highly 

accomplished and well-crafted 

motor in real-world driving, and 

a class standout for smoothness 

and refinement that not only 

equals, but also betters a number 

of more costly rivals. This is one 

of the most relaxing, yet responsive, 

large, luxury SUVs I have 

driven in the $100k price bracket, 

with excellent low-speed throttle
