Coastguard turns
on great day for
its 125th
A huge downpour didn’t deter about 200 people from attending Coastguard Sumner’s open day on Sunday.
It was part of the organisation’s 125th anniversary celebrations. Supporters were able to tour the station,
partake in a sausage sizzle – and find out what happens when the station’s siren goes off. At the sound
of the siren all three Coastguard Sumner vessels took to the water for rescue simulations, with supporters
crowding onto the breakwater to watch the action.
Residents
plan for
future
disasters
• By Dylan Smits
COMMUNITIES from Sumner
to Diamond Harbour are
organising emergency plans to
respond to the risks of climate
change and natural disaster.
Lyttelton volunteers are leading
the way by setting up a community-run
emergency hub.
The city council anticipates up
to one metre of sea level rise by
2100 – worrying for coastal areas
like Lyttelton and Sumner.
“Getting people to volunteer
these days can be tricky, and I
think it is great that people want
to be involved in this kind of initiative,”
Lyttelton Emergency Hub
facilitator Felicite Jardine said.
The renewal of a community-led
disaster response was prompted
by the release of Canterbury Civil
Defence guidelines in March.
For the past eight months
Jardine has been co-ordinating
efforts to set up the hub, which
will operate as a centre for people
to find safety and support in a
disaster.
Jardine said the training of its
12 volunteers is going well and
the hub will be fully prepared to
respond in the new year.
Care package brings hope to mums
• By Sasha Watson
BROOKE NAUDE remembers
the gift that gave her hope.
Soon after her newborn son
Callum was admitted to the
neonatal intensive car unit in
June last year, Naude received a
care package from charity One
Mother to Another.
“I was pregnant with my first
baby and everything was fine as
far as I knew, then all of a sudden
. . . I had an emergency C-section
so my newborn son went straight
into NICU after that,” said
Naude.
“There was a lot of grieving
. . . a lot of unknowns and a lot
of worry . . . riding those ups and
downs was really difficult.
“I honestly felt like we were
never going to leave the neonatal
unit and I get emotional just
thinking about that because it
was really hard to remain hopeful.”
A few days after Callum was
born prematurely, Naude was
gifted the package.
Said Naude: “It was just so
impactful . . . When you’re in
this sterile hospital environment
where everything is new and
unfamiliar and foreign to you,
it was a touch of warmth and
From war-torn Afghanistan and
She talks to reporter
OVERSEAS military service
is difficult to balance with
motherhood, but Vanessa
Weenink says it was worth it to
serve her country.
“It was a huge sacrifice to
make,” she said.
As a medical officer, Weenink
achieved the rank of major when
she was called up to serve two
tours in Afghanistan and one
tour in East Timor from 2005 to
2007.
“I’ve always wanted to serve
she was caring for other
vulnerable children in need.
Mad on Meth - How New
Zealand got hooked on P
by Benedict Collins
Why cook at home when you can order in?
Only 50 years ago, pure methamphetamine was legally prescribed in
New Zealand to anyone looking for a boost. But it wasn’t long before P
was rebranded as the most dangerous and destructive drug in the world -
this quality.
Our Price: $79.95m2
(that’s $21.85m2)
and New Zealanders cemented as among its biggest users.
With dry wit and biting insight, journalist Benedict Collins takes us inside the evolution
of meth in New Zealand. From ram raids for pseudoephedrine to our own cooks and
gangs ‘breaking bad’, a visit to the Golden Triangle of meth production in South-East Asia,
multimillion-dollar busts, and a moral panic that seeded a meth-testing scandal. All set
the stage for unthinkable crimes and drug-fuelled mania, but also serviced a hidden world
of white-collar users - and cemented New Zealand’s reputation as among the biggest meth
consumers in the world.
How did tough on crime become dumb on drugs? And what does a solution to Pure
addiction look like?
The Frozen River
by Ariel Lawhon
A gripping historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned
18th-century midwife who investigates a shocking murder that unhinges her small
community.
Maine, 1789: The Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice. Martha Ballard is
summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As the local midwife and
healer, Martha is good at keeping secrets. Her diary is a record of every birth and death,
every murder and debacle that unfolds in the town of Hallowell. In that diary she also
documented the details of an alleged rape that occurred four months earlier. Now, one of
the men accused of that heinous attack has been found dead in the ice.
While Martha is certain she knows what happened the night of the assault, she suspects
that the two crimes are linked, and that there is more to both cases than meets the eye.
Over the course of one long, hard winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices
mount, Martha’s diary lands at the center of the scandal and threatens to tear both her
family and her community apart.
Ariel Lawhon brings to life a brave and compassionate unsung heroine who refused to
accept anything less than justice on behalf of those no one else would protect. The Frozen
River is a thrilling, tense, and tender story of a remarkable woman who had the courage to
take a stand, and in the process wrote herself into American history.
in a convoy on her way to a
the vehicles hit an improvised
explosive device (IED).
The New Zealand soldiers
sprang into action, suspecting
they were about to be ambushed.
Luckily nothing happened and
there were no injuries caused by
the IED.
‘Communities need to be resilient as a whole’
• From page 1
Cartoonist Alex Hallatt is one
of the volunteers. She joined to
help her community get prepared
in case Lyttelton gets cut off – as
it did in the February 22, 2011
earthquake – due to a climate
change induced disaster.
“I think
especially in the
face of climate
change we need
communities to
be resilient as a
whole. That is
the impetus for
Alex Hallatt
me joining,” she
said.
The hub is
modelled around community
self-reliance.
“We do not really like to be dictated
to from the outside,” Hallatt
said.
“If we work on it in advance,
then it means we can get the
kind of response we want as a
community.”
Hallatt’s training is ongoing
until mid-December. The
volunteers are taking part in
workshops on emergency communications
and drilling the
set-up of the hub.
“It is like the best kind of insurance
you hope to never use.”
Hallatt has found the training
enjoyable and educational so far.
“I was not expecting it to be
fun because, you know, you are
plans to respond to the risks of climate change and natural disaster. PHOTO: NEWSLINE
planning for a disaster.”
Hallatt encourages any interested
Lyttelton residents to
volunteer.
“You are planning for a disaster,
but by getting involved with
the hub now you can have a real
laugh,” she said.
Charteris Bay resident Jill
Pattinson is heading the steering
committee for the community
response in the Harbour Basin
area.
Pattinson said the steering
committee’s focus is helping
residents’
associations in
the area
set up their
own disaster
plans, and
facilitate
expert advice.
Emergency
Jill Pattinson hubs will be a
part of larger
preparedness strategy.
With the threat of climate
change induced events like wildfires,
Pattinson said communities
felt “that they actually needed to
take greater control of minimising
the risks in the area”.
Creating an overall fire plan is
the first priority for the individual
residents’ associations.
“I have found wonderful responses
from all the associations
and great enthusiasm.”
Pattinson said the committee
has been following the Lyttelton
hub’s progress closely.
“We have kept in communication
around what can be achieved
together.”
In Sumner, the residents’
association is in earlier stages of
local disaster
preparation
and following a
different route to
meet local needs.
SCRA chair
Liza Sparrow
said the association
is seeking
funding and Liza Sparrow
volunteers for the
development of a mass evacuation
plan for Sumner and Taylors
Mistake.
This plan would take priority
over an emergency hub due to
the disaster risks associated with
Sumner’s location, such as tsunami,
rockfall, fire and flood.
Sparrow said this plan would
also be co-ordinated with
Lyttelton and other nearby communities.
Volunteers from the Lyttelton
hub and Harbour Basin
representatives were scheduled
to meet yesterday afternoon
for the next stage of preparing
their communities, including
attending a Civil Defence session
learning about communication
in an emergency.
The tradie saving charities ‘thousands’
• By Dylan Smits
FINDING THE community
where you belong can inspire
great generosity. For Australian
electrician Mick Bennett,
moving to Cass Bay in 2016
sparked his desire to offer free
services to charities.
Bennett founded Tradies for
Charity in 2017 to help charities
save on repair, installation and
building costs by offering free
labour and expertise.
Balancing charity work with
running his small electrical
company can be a challenge, but
Bennett said it is worth it.
“It is so rewarding that I
almost feel guilty. It feels like I
get more out of it than I could
ever give.”
The charity has tooled up
for jobs in the bays at Te Puna
Auaha Lyttelton Makerspace
and the Whakaraupo Carving
Centre Trust. In Christchurch,
the charity has supported the
Battered Women’s Trust and
Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust.
Bennett enlists the help of other
tradies when the job type and
workload demands it.
Born in Melbourne, in his
adult life Bennett has seldom
lived in one place for too long.
Until he moved to Cass Bay with
his wife Meredith.
“I came here and got more
connected with the community
and settled and sort of found
my resting place in the world
here in Lyttelton and in the bay,”
Bennett said.
The values he saw in the
community inspired him to start
charitable work.
“It’s very sort of open and
forgiving and very, you know,
considerate and empathetic,” he
said.
When his business Ausmic
Electrical started making a
profit, Bennett considered where
he could apply his skills for
charities. He then found there
were no organisations looking
for electricians.
“I sort of got a bit deflated with
that.”
Bennett then started talking
with Meredith and she suggested
starting his own charity. He
registered Tradies for Charity
as a charitable trust. Bennett
said no money goes through his
charity and he tries his best to
separate it from his business.
Makerspace co-founder Paul
Dietsche could not give an
exact number but said Bennett
had saved the organisation
“easily thousands” of dollars in
electrical work.
Bennett saved the Makerspace
from needing additional funding
HELPING HAND:
Tradies for
Charity founder
Mick Bennett
and Whakaraupo
Carving Centre
Trust employee
Eugene
Whakatope.
for the electrical work, Dietsche
said.
The Makerspace has been a
work in progress since 2019. The
space aims to become a hub for
repair, craft and creative projects.
Tools and materials will be
shared and recycled within the
community.
Dietsche said Bennett has his
“massive thanks” for being a
great partner to the community
hub.
“He is a great guy.”
Out of all the jobs Bennett has
undertaken since starting the
charity, he is most proud of his
work wiring up the Makerspace.
“To get it to the point where
they can actually start utilising
it, it’s been very, very fulfilling.”
Bennett appreciates the
gratitude of the organisations
he helps, but said the fulfilment
of doing the job itself is all he
needs.
He has lost track of the
number of jobs, small and
large, he has undertaken since
founding the charity.
The work keeps Bennett
busy. He has several ongoing
projects for the charity. At
the Whakaraupo Carving
Centre Trust, Bennett tests new
appliances for safety and trains
the staff to do the same.
A struggle for Bennett is
finding other tradies who are
generous enough to give their
time for free.
“It’s quite difficult. It usually
ends up just being me. It’s hard
to find people,” Bennett said.
The charity needs plumbers
and builders. Bennett has some
building experience, but for
more complex jobs he needs a
qualified builder for sign offs.
“If there is any tradies
interested, yeah, give us a shout.”
What a difference a year makes
PREDATOR FREE Allandale
celebrated its first birthday this
month with a community dinner
at Living Springs.
Prizes were awarded to the top
trappers, and each member left
with a Predator Free Allandale
sign to display on their front
gate.
PFA is a community predator
control project led by Living
Springs’ Kaimahi for Nature
team.
The group aims to eradicate
possums, rats and mustelids
from 1190ha around Allandale
in Governors Bay, to protect the
native plant and animal life in
forested gullies, waterways and
rocky outcrops.
Twenty landowners have
signed up, and the KfN crew
have helped place more than 140
traps on local properties.
Team leader for KfN Living
Springs Henare Nathan said the
project has been “a roaring success”.
She said monitoring over
the past 12 months has shown a
huge decline in populations of
target species in Living Springs.
“We’ve never seen anything
like this before – the numbers of
rats and possums are unprecedentedly
low,” she said.
While the KfN team was
essential to get the project off
the ground, Nathan said PFA
“only works because of the
community effort”.
The KfN team has instituted
trophies to celebrate residents’
achievements. The Possum Cup
went to Aaron Warner for trapping
the most possums, while
Grant Zuydendorp was crowned
PFA champion 2023 for his 114
mice, rats and stoats.
Zuydendorp said the secret
to his success was checking his
traps daily.
“I check my traps every single
day while I’m out walking the
dog,” he said.
PFA trapper Seb Double, 13,
runs his family’s trapline. He has
been racking up big numbers in
Ōhinetahi and has his sights set
on both trophies for 2024.
He’s passionate about the
project.
“I love being out in nature and
seeing all the birds,” he said.
With KfN funding ending in
March next year, groups like PFA
are vital to keep the conservation
work alive.
Over the past three years, KfN
has planted thousands of native
trees and undertaken large-scale
predator control work to protect
native species in Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour.
With trappers like Warner,
Zuydendorp and Double onboard,
they can be sure they’re
leaving the harbour in good
hands.
Budding stars set sights on Dubai
• By Dylan Smits
THREE promising cricketers
from Redcliffs and Sumner are
just months away from playing in
an international tournament in
the Middle East.
Kate Sharpe, 14, and Lily
Rumball, 13, (Redcliffs) and
Daisy Thake, 14, (Sumner) are
in the South Island under-15
girls’ team, who will play in the
inaugural Dubai Cup in April.
Daisy said she is “really
excited” about the opportunity.
“It is going to be lots of fun
and I’m so pleased to have been
selected.”
The South Island team are
being coached by retired White
Fern Kirsty Bond, the first female
player to score a double century
in 1996, in a test cricket match
against England.
The tournament is being hosted
by England star Joe Root’s R66T
Academy.
The Dubai Cup will give the
teams the opportunity to be
coached by academy coaches, as
well as play in fixtures at the ICC
Academy and the Dubai Sevens
Stadium.
Louisa Sharpe said her
daughter, Kate, “can’t wait to play
other teams from around the
world. That’s really special.”
Sharpe said the girls are very
grateful to learn skills from a
former professional.
ON THE UP: Kate Sharpe (left), Lily Rumball and Daisy
Thake are looking forward to next year’s Dubai Cup, where
some games will be played at the Dubai Sevens Stadium.
The team has been fundraising
since August to help pay for
flights, accommodation and
tournament fees which will cost
over $6000 each.
As a team, the girls they have
set up fundraising quiz nights
and are now making and selling
cookie jars. They are also looking
for businesses to sponsor their
training T-shirts.
Jane Thake, mother of Daisy,
said the tournament is a great
opportunity for the girls to
compete despite the cost.
“I think it will be an amazing
experience. For girls’ cricket
there is not much. There is not a
regular school tournament, like
the boys have, for girls who love
cricket as a sport.”
The girls have also been
preparing for the tournament
through their school club games
which Daisy said have been going
“really well.”
The three girls recently play
in the Gillette Venus Cup at
Hagley Park. Christchurch Girls’
High School First XI team won,
sending the team to nationals.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 19
Te Rā o te Pāhua (the day of plunder)
NOVEMBER 5 marks a dark day
in the history of race relations
in Aotearoa New Zealand. The
shadow of events in Parihaka
stretches from the mountain
of Taranaki to the shores of
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
and beyond.
Māori peacefully united in
Parihaka for their survival and
the cultivation of their soil in
the face of land confiscation
and the concentrated efforts of
imperial forces. The values of
peaceful protest and non-violent
resistance preceded the time
of Gandhi and has become
a practice echoed in protest
movements since. The values of
this movement must be acknowledged,
especially in their continuation
within the challenging
environments and the people the
prisoners and remaining whānau
were met with in the aftermath
of Te Rā o te Pāhua.
The following is an extract
from the book Rāpaki Church A
Sesquicentennial 1869-2019 by
Ngāti Wheke kaumātua Donald
Couch.
Parihaka
Parihaka is a Māori
community in Taranaki. The
name is now associated in New
Zealand history with nonviolent
resistance by Māori to
European forceful occupation
of confiscated Māori land, and
their subsequent treatment.
In 1870, 74 Māori from
Pakakohi, Taranaki, received
death sentences imposed by
courts-martial. The sentences
were later commuted to
imprisonment in Dunedin for
terms of three or seven years.
Subsequently, it was officially
recorded that 18 of the 74 died
there.
One of the ways non-violent
resistance was practised was to
plough confiscated land. About
420 plowmen were subsequently
imprisoned. Another method
was to build fences. None of
the 216 arrested in 1879 were
granted a trial. They were sent
directly to South Island prisons.
On November 5, 1881, 1600
troops and cavalry (including
MEMORIAL: The Parihaka monument at Rāpaki church acknowledging the Parihaka men, and the women and children
who were left undefended in their absence. It is surrounded in unity with plaques from Waikato, Ngāti Kahungungu ki
Wairarapa and Te Tai Tokerau.
Harry Ell, later of Port Hills
Summit Rd fame), entered
the village of Parihaka.
Sixteen hundred inhabitants
were expelled and dispersed
throughout Taranaki without
food or shelter. Soldiers looted
and destroyed most of the
buildings at Parihaka. The
leaders Te Whiti o Rongomai
and Tohu Kākahi were arrested
and jailed for 16 months.
As the Waitangi Tribunal
reported in 1996, “a vibrant and
productive Māori community
was destroyed (with) total state
control of all matters Māori.”
More than 400 Māori were
arrested and jailed in the South
Island where they remained
without trial for as long as
16 months. This was done
via a series of new repressive
laws, which permitted the
Government to postpone trials
indefinitely.
The Government moved all
Parihaka prisoners to the South
Island, incarcerating them in
jails in Dunedin, Hokitika,
Lyttelton and Rīpapa (later to
Ōtamahua Quail Island). There
were an increasing number of
deaths in custody in the freezing
South Island jails.
In March 2000, descendants
of Parihaka prisoners visited
Rāpaki during a heke to Te
Waipounamu to visit the places
where their tīpuna had been
imprisoned or buried.
Unfortunately, compared
with the Parihaka prisoners
sent to Dunedin and Hokitika,
where some details of their
experiences are available, there
is little information about
those who were imprisoned in
Whakaraupō. The Waitangi
Tribunal confirmed that neither
the Government nor the media
wanted information released.
In 1881, the Lyttelton Times
declined the publication of an
article on the prisoners because
“our correspondent gives details
which are really too disgusting
for publication and if true,
cast the utmost disgrace upon
those who had the prisoners in
charge”.
And, in Parliament the Native
Minister gave only vague replies,
such as “the deaths amongst
Māoris have been very few in
proportion to the numbers of the
prisoners . . .”
But die they unfortunately and
undoubtedly did on Ōtamahua.
Rāpaki offered manaaki with
burial in a Māori urupā on
Māori whenua. As the Rāpaki
urupā Parihaka monument
states, the prisoners that died on
Ōtamahua Island were buried
on the island, but Rāpaki people
exhumed and reinterred them
back at Rāpaki urupā.
In June 2017, the Crown
made a formal apology. Chris
Finlayson, Minister for Treaty
of Waitangi Negotiations and
Attorney General of New
Zealand, on behalf of the Crown,
acknowledged the past events
at Parihaka as “among the most
shameful in the history of our
land.”
Does Mazda’s 1.9-litre diesel turbo deliver?
MAZDA IS hoping for an uplift
in buyer interest in two of the
most affordable versions of its
BT-50 Ute, as it feels the sales
heat from a host fresh faced rivals
including the latest Ford Ranger.
Their response to this challenge
is a new 1.9 litre turbo-diesel
motor for its price leading 2WD
GSX and GTX double cabs, the
only body style offered here.
Can this motor, with its modest
engine capacity and power
output, add more spring to the
BT50’s sales step, which has been
a bit flat footed of late?
Let’s refresh your memory,
after all the latest BT50 has been
around since early 2021. Apart
from cosmetic differences, it is a
rebadged Isuzu D-Max. The two
companies signed up to a model
sharing arrangement, once
they parted company with their
previous model share partners
Ford and Holden.
Offering a 1.9 litre turbo diesel
gives the BT50 a major point of
difference over its rivals with
its low CO2 output of 205g/km.
Mazda claim it’s the lowest CO2
figure of any diesel double cab
Ute on our market. This means it
attracts a lower government clean
car fee than most of it rivals.
Many of them are feeling the
pain of higher fees that came into
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
force on 1 July, adding in many
instances anywhere between $5-
6k to the price of some models.
That’s a real affordability body
blow for several Utes compared
to the fee they faced pre-1 July.
There was the expected mad
scramble, as people raced to
register their new Ute to head-off
the heftier fees now at play in
our diesel Ute arena. This has
distorted the market to some
degree by dragging forward
by months thousand of new
Ute sales. These will lose some
momentum between now and the
end of the year as our economy
continues to slow.
When it comes to clean car
fees the 1.9 litre motor saves a
fair wad of your hard earned
cash compared to the 3.0 litre
turbo diesel in its AWD sibling.
The smaller 1.9 litre power plant
incurs a $1,868 fee, which is
$3,767 less than what you will be
hit with for the 3.0 litre engine
found in the AWD BT50.
This new smaller motor
capacity is exclusive to the price
leading GSX and mid-spec GTX
2WD. The GSX supplied for this
road test heads the BT50’s value
for money charge at $48,740
plus the clean car fee with the
more generously appointed
GTX retailing for $52,740. A
decent deal sweetener is a 5
year/150,000km new vehicle
warranty and $250 fixed price
servicing for the same period and
distance. A freebie lobbed in for
good measure, is unlimited km
5-year Mazda On-Call Roadside
Assistance.
This frugal four-cylinder
turbo diesel is feisty enough with
110kW of power and 350Nm of
torque. The latter is about 100nm
down on the larger 3.0-litre put
to work in AWD BT50’s. Despite
less power and torque its towing
capabilities are only marginally
down on these models at 3,000kg
braked or 750kg unbraked.
Maximum payload increases to
1150kg for the 2WD GSX and
1,130kg for the GTX.
The Isuzu sourced 1.9-litre
“It’s a tough wee motor, yet unexpectedly
smooth and refined.”
is widely used in BT50 and
D-Max models sold in Southeast
Asian markets, including
Thailand where both models
are produced. It’s a tough wee
motor, yet unexpectedly smooth
and refined. Acceleration from
standing starts and in-gear is
brisk, but you are always aware
that with its modest engine
capacity, it has to work harder
for the same results delivered by
the larger diesels powering in
its competitors. Enabling it to
punch above its weight is a smart
six-speed automatic well versed
in selecting the right gear at the
right time.
A generously proportioned
cabin has plenty of front and
rear legroom, while the seats
are supportive and comfy. The
instruments and controls for key
functions such as lights, wipers
and indicators are easy to operate
and read.
Visibility from the elevated
seating position is hard to fault
and for a long vehicle this one
proved easier to park than I
thought it would be. An excellent
reversing camera and its parking
guides make squeezing in and
out of tight parks a drama free
exercise. For a price-driven
model the GSX lacks for little in
the way of features and driver
creature comforts. A touch
screen infotainment system
supports both Apple CarPlay
and Android Auto, with a multiinformation
display providing
key driving information are
standard.
All BT-50’s have a 5-Star
ANCAP Safety Rating under a
more demanding testing regime
introduced in 2022. This is the
first BT50 fitted with a driver
knee airbag and a driver’s farside
air bag. Anti-whiplash front
seats reduce the severity of neck
injuries in a rear end impact.
There’s greater pedestrian
protection from a more human
friendly bonnet designed to
reduce injury in a crash.
This model adds more pages to
the BT50 safety success story led
by a host of class-leading active
safety technologies to help keep
the driver out of trouble. These
include Autonomous Emergency
Braking with Pedestrian/Cyclist
Detection, Adaptive Cruise
Control, Blind Spot Monitoring,
and Lane Departure Warning.
The delicate balance between
ride comfort and road holding is
right on the mark and as good as
you will find among the current
crop of Utes. This has been
achieved without compromising
the vehicles durability and
strength, with the GSX offering
plenty of both. With the BT-50
you get as standard class leading
suspension refinement, although
the firmer rear spring settings
make its low-speed ride over
uneven surfaces fidgety.
The test Ute cornered
confidently, with the experience
made more enjoyable by well
weighted and communicative
steering.
Open homes: Wed 8 Nov 12-12:30pm
Sat 11 and Sun 12 Nov 11-11:30am
With panoramic coastal views from
almost every perspective, this home
seamlessly merges the striking allure of
its surroundings with a design optimised
for entertainment, balancing easy
maintenance, expansive outdoor spaces,
and convenient access.
Constructed from a combination of
concrete block and plaster, the exterior
has undergone stringent maintenance
and repair under the watchful eye of the
vendor, ensuring minimal upkeep and
peace of mind for the incoming owner.
Several interior enhancements have been
executed throughout their ownership,
including new flooring and an upgraded
ensuite and main bathroom, and while
there’s potential for further refinements,
the home currently radiates comfort and
liveability.
The approx 240sqm layout is superbly
balanced, featuring three bedrooms and
two bathrooms. The upper-level primary
bedroom comes complete with a walk-in
wardrobe and ensuite, while a groundfloor
bedroom and bathroom promote
accommodation flexibility. The dual
living area amplifies its bond with the
outdoors, seamlessly merging with the vast
courtyard and terraced garden, setting the
stage for exceptional alfresco gatherings.
Furthermore, these strategically placed
courtyards capture the warmth of the late
afternoon sun from the west and embrace
the morning rays from the east. Coupled
with a louvred system, they offer privacy
within a harmoniously landscaped, lowmaintenance
garden with a balanced
spatial design.
Heightened comfort is confirmed
by double glazing, and a heat pump,
while the internal access double garage
enjoys extensive ceiling clearance and
accompanying off-street parking.
Occupying an approx 795 sqm section,
the property is primed for maximum
sunlight and boasts enviable proximity to
the beach, Redcliffs School, and village,
ensuring its appeal will be wide-reaching.
Mission Without Borders
visit the Sechka’s house
with support to lift them
out of poverty.
Families in Ukraine
need your help!
The Sechka family live in a rural area
of Sarny region, western Ukraine, in
an old dilapidated house. Mykhailo,
40, and his wife Nadiya, 31, work hard to
provide for their family. They face a massive
challenge as three of their five children have
severe disabilities. One of their daughters
is unable to walk at all. The health of
their children means they need medical
examinations, check-ups, and treatment.
Which costs money.
Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but
when the war began, he lost most of his
wages then he had to quit. Since then, he
has focused on farming and keeps cows,
pigs, geese, and poultry to survive.
Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they
are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate
a lot of land to grow forage for the animals,
and vegetables and grain for the family. He
was using an old tractor that he bought 15
years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and
required constant repair. Mykhailo says that
after each working day he had to repair it
and it wasn’t worth the money. Since then,
the old tractor became a place where Mieko
and his siblings play.
Despite Mykhailo and Nadiya’s efforts,
the family’s situation became very difficult.
The loss of income, health issues and the
ongoing war has taken its toll.
Mieko’s family need help with resources,
such as tools and machinery, so they can
grow food for themselves.
Right now, the Ukrainian economy
is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So,
supporting families just like Mieko’s with a
self-sufficiency project will be a lifeline.
Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have
resulted in physical and psychological
issues. There is no doubt that the impact
of war will be felt by his family and many
others for years to come.
Support MiSSion Without BorderS
At Mission Without Borders, we regularly reach
out to Kiwis who respond by giving, praying,
and offering their unwavering support.
If you would like to help, here are
some ways we can make a difference
together:
1. A gift of $30 will supply an emergency
food and hygiene parcel to help
displaced and vulnerable people in the
Ukraine.
2. Sponsor a family: we have families
in Ukraine waiting right now for
sponsorship. You can enable and
encourage a whole family to lift
themselves out of poverty and become
self-sufficient for $45 a month.
3. Consider donating towards a selfsufficiency
project for a family like
Mieko’s. This will give them the
opportunity to not only survive but
thrive ‒ $25 will provide a packet of
seeds to grow life-sustaining fruits
and vegetables.
